We have classified the 413 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Malibu about STEERING into the following categories.
I had the recall of the sensor on the electric power steering accomplished in october. i have had the loss of ps three times since upon acceleration and the problem is worse now than before the recall. the dealer indicates the problem now is the voltage spikes per tsb 08-02-32-005. this tsb indicates a defective coil causes voltage spikes in the electrical system thereby damaging the electric ps motor/module. the codes c0900, b1325, and c0176 were set. i spoke with gm with no avail. there is a tsb 10183 which extends the warranty to 10 years and 100,000 miles. this is with a loss of signal from the steering column. my vin is not covered by this tsb. my contention is a loss of ps by any cause is a safety issue and gm should recall and fix it. the tsb admits the coil is defective as the tsb requires a replacement with a new enhanced coil and a ground strap added to the coil. this is a manufacture defect and should be corrected by gm. any vehicle with this defective coil can have the electric ps damaged at any moment without knowing that the failure has occurred. again, i believe this is a safety issue. what is the point of gm replacing the sensor because of a safety issue and will not correct other issues that cause the same safety issue. why would one fault be more of an issue than another causing the same safety issue? i have ordered the new coil and related parts to correct the voltage spikes which could damage other parts. that still leaves the motor/module which the dealer indicates needs to be replaced. *tr

I have had my engine stall due to lack of fuel multiple times which seems dangerous, i travel on the expressway every day. what if it happens at an fast speed. i also have had multiple issues while steering my car. there is an loud popping, coming from a steering shaft, which has just gotten worse i am afraid the steering shaft is going to break! both of these issues have been an recall for 2005 malibu. as i am clearly having these issues my car is not part of the recall? why not? if something happens and i end up in an accident i see a lawsuit. not to mention i have a 4 month child! *tr

I was speeding trying to get on palmetto expressway when i suddenly noticed that i could not move the steering wheel, since that date my dad is using my car with great effort, and had tried to fix it, but there are no parts nowhere to solve the problem. what must i do? my car is also involved in recall 13036. *tr
First i have had nothing but steering issues and have had parts replaced previously on this vehicle. now i have to replace struts, axles and needless to say new tires because of the wear on them due to the steering issues. however, i have a recalled shift cable and have been waiting since last year in august or september. i asked isn't this a safety issue and they stated , they all are. so i am still waiting for the call that they have this shift cable and can only pray nothing happens, like a bad accident. if something were it probably wouldn't be good for you all. anyway when will this part be in so i can get it taken care of. went to [xxx] in kansas city ks. bought the vehicle from them and have had nothing but issues with the car. please advise. by the way the seat broke, the automatic locks stopped working and i'm not real happy. of course its paid for now and not under a warranty. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Was driving on a very busy highway when the electronic steering went out. there is a recall on it for over a month and there is still no parts available to have this problem fixed. the car is not drivable in this condition, it is a danger if taken on the road. this vehicle is my main form of transportation and need it to go to work everyday in a 30 mile commute. this is unacceptable how there can be such a major malfunction and a recall yet no parts or time frame on when i can expect my car to be back in driving conditions. i will never drive a gm car ever again. *tr
We have received 3 separate recall notices from gm. (1 for electric steering, 1 for brake apply sensor and 1 for a shift cable fracture). however, gm will not fix any of the problems. they tell us to call the dealer. the dealer then tells us that gm will not supply the parts. upon calling gm a third time, they will not reveal who is making these parts, where they are coming from, or have any idea when they will be available. they again instruct us to call the dealer. each recall states that it is an "important safety recall" in accordance federal laws but yet nobody will fix any of the issues. the first recall notice came in 2012 for electric steering. we are still being told there are not parts to fix this. the brake apply sensor came in july 2014. the shift cable fracture also came in july 2014. (this indicates that the cable can snap while driving). *tr

I own a 2005 malibu. i keep getting recall letters (electronic steering, ignition, body control module) they have no parts to repair any of them. what good is a recall when you can't get your car fixed? how long does the gov give manufacturers to actually repair a recall. seems to me if the default(s) is/are dangerous enough to issue a recall, there should be some repercussions when gm does not repair recalls in a timely manner. should i just go to the dealer and demand a rental till my car is made safe to drive? how about a picket sign? should i go and pay an independent mechanic and bill gm? For awhile now my power steering indicator has been going off and a few months ago it had become an issue when i veered off the road on a u-turn. i brought it to my local chevrolet dealership and they told me nothing was wrong with my car and that id be fine. few weeks ago i had another incident to where i was backing into a spot and couldn't turn my wheel and almost hit the car behind me. the chime goes off 2-3 times a week and have trouble starting my car sometimes ad well. being concerned i had done some research and found out that there is a recall on my 2005 chevrolet malibu. i immediately called gm and they took info from me and left message for chevy to call me. chevy never called me back so i called and they began to tell me the parts are not available to remedy the problem and the car is on a waiting list. i immediately began to do more research and came up empty. i don't understand how gm can leave me in this situation. i don't know if because my car is almost at the 10 year mark and than gm is not liable, or there is a loop hole in some way they can drag their feet. is there anything i can do, or anything being done about this?! *tr

I was on my way to school. when i took my exit (23 on route 2), the car simply turned off, locking my steering wheel. i lost control, spung twice and landed on the ramp of that exit. the car has been useless since then. i called the recall hotline to get support and they did nothing for me. i'm left with no car and no support by the gm team that forward me endless recall letters. i've had endless issues with this car since i financed it. endless repairs, close accidents encounter because of car sensor issues. brakes no properly working. traction failing. it has been a nightmare. how can i get support for a vehicle which i loved so dearly and yet nearly cost me my life?
While driving home i lost control of my steering wheel. it became hard to steer and i could barely turn off the street into a parking lot. at the time of the incident it was raining and 5 o'clock traffic was getting heavy. *tr
when i turn the steering wheel right or left i hear a knocking sound and steering loose. *tr

This relates to recall campaign 14v153000. in 2009, i first began having power steering failures when accelerating from stopped. i would feel the steering wheel jerk to the path of least resistance (straighten) if i was in a turn, and would hear three chimes (ding-ding-ding). if i released the gas pedal, the power steering would resume operations, but if i maintained pedal activation, power steering would remain off and an alert would illuminate on the dashboard indicating power steering failure. the problem occurred with increased frequency on hot days, especially when air conditioning was operating on high (leading me to believe that it was a loss of power to the steering column, induced by a problem with the way that the electrical system was set up--giving higher priority to a/c fans than to the power steering). in october 2009, the vehicle was repaired under special bulletin 10183. however, in april 2014, i began having this problem again. on every day where the temperature was above 75 degrees, i've had this issue. i called gm and they stated that my vin is not among those affected, though i drive a 2005 chevy malibu and i clearly have had the same problem that other vehicles using the same parts. the dealer refuses to look at it unless i have a recall letter. nhtsa should look into how many customers have been notified out of this my, especially since there is nothing in the language (or logic) of this recall that should exclude my vehicle. *tr
My car is a part of the chevy recall that effects the power steering on the car. my car will completely pull to the left while you are driving and there is vibration in the tires when you hit 45 miles and up. when you stop and let go of the wheel it completely turns the wheels to the left and the steering wheel does a 360? circle twice. i have a 2 year old and a 4 month old that i drive around in this car. i have been speaking with a local dealership galles chevrolet and they keep telling me there wasn't a fix for a few months.. then i was told there was a fix but no parts. now i have been told that i am on a list and to call back in 10 days to see if the parts are in. i called yesterday 10/14/14 and they said they still don't have the parts. this is the only vehicle my family has to drive. this car is a huge safety issue for me and my children and the car is unsafe to drive. gm is dragging their feet on this and it is extremely unacceptable. god forbid that we were involved in an accident and something happens to my children or myself or others. how can a company get away this? it has been months since they issued the recall and have not done anything about it. i have been working with a lawyer on this issue and will pursue full legal action if necessary. i also have had to replace tires on my car because of the wear on them from pulling left. *tr
My name is [xxx]. i am submitting this complaint on behalf of a close family member,[xxx] is 90 years with no access to a computer. he resides at [xxx], and owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. [xxx] received three safety recall notices that are summarized below: june 2014 - first recall notice stated: your vehicle, equipped with eps may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving. steering control can be maintained, as the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, which could result in an increased risk of a crash. july 2014 - second recall notice stated: traction control, electronic stability control (ecs), and panic braking assist features, if equipped, may be disabled. service esc and/or traction control tell-tales lights may illuminate with this condition. these conditions may increase the risk of a crash. july 2014 - third recall notice stated: your vehicle has a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time. if the driver cannot place the vehicle in park, and exists the vehicle without applying the park brake, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur with prior warning. [xxx] contacted the local chevrolet dealership in june 2014. the local chevrolet dealership is: keller chevrolet ([xxx]),. resolution: [xxx] feels that while he is waiting for gm to receive replacement parts for his 2005 malibu, the local dealership should provide him with a safe loaner vehicle as his existing 2005 malibu. [xxx] can be reached at: [xxx] thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact received notifications for nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control), nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering), and nhtsa campaign number: 14v224000 (power train). however, the parts needed to do the repair were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure.
To date, i have received 3 different recall notices from gm dealing with my vehicle. though i understand that these parts may not be available immediately, i don't and will never understand why i am unable to get a loaner car until these problems can be taken care of. i was instructed to drive my vehicle until i had a problem and then it would be taken care of. what kind of advice is that? i've talked to several people today about my issue and no one cares. i can pretty much guarantee none of them would have their wives and small children in the same position i'm in. all i want to be able to do is go to work and make it home safely to my child. *tr
Shifting has been hard from park position, wheel alignment very bad ,shifting from left to right. a recall was done by gm on 05/20/2014 but my car was not recall until today, i check everyday on gm with my vin number. on may 1st i went to my auto services and they find out major problems with transmission shift cable and inner tie-rod end. as i did not receive a recall order, gm won't do anything. very dangerous situation for my 18 year old and i as auto repair shop will charge me over $600.00++ which i can't afford now. scary and unfair. thank you in advance for listening and advising me in the very near future. *tr
I had sent an email regarding the recalls i had heard about. someone from your company called and also contacted nick chevrolet. when i was talking to the service tech ([xxx]) he made an appointment for me to drop my car off so that they could look at all of the issues i was having. when i got to the dealership on saturday may 17th i spoke with louis and explained what was going on and what [xxx] told me to do. [xxx] then proceeded to tell me "he didn't care what i was told, he was the service manager" at that point he proceed to tell me that the only recall for my car was some wire and that they didn't have the part and didn't know when it would be in. so he didn't listen and anything i had to say about my email to you or my conversation with [xxx]. i am extremely disappointed with gm and this dealership and would not recommend either to my worst enemy, hence my last email. if anything happens to me or my vehicle because of gm and/or [xxx] from nick chevrolet both will be held accountable! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
