The turn signals started working intermittent, then quit. this was a recall a couple of years ago, and it was related to the hazard warning switch. my car was taken to the dealership and the switch was replaced. unfortunately, this is a repeat and was not covered under the recall. the switches are still going bad and not covered. my instrument panel was destroyed internally when my switch was replaced and this damage was discovered during the last replacement in which i replaced the switch on my own since it was not covered. *tr
I purchased my 2000 chevy malibu in march of 2001. in early 2003 i took my car in for repairs because i had lost steering ability. i was told the sub frame needed to be replaced so i had it done. a week later i had to bring the car back to the dealership for brake problems. i was then told the abs needed to be replaced so i had that done. since then i have had to change my brakes numerous times. just last year i had to replace the pads 3 times in a 9 month period because the pads had been worn all the way down. during that 9 month period i also had to replace the calipers and rotors once then a week later the rotors had to be resurface again. now i am having to have my brake pads replaced again this weekend. so that makes a total of 4 brake pad changes in less than a years time. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the anti-theft sensor was illuminating intermittently. in addition, the contact was not able to get the key to turn from an off position to an on position. on some occasions, the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 12v224000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

I would like to report the problem im having is with my wife's 2000 chevy malibu, and from what i have been reading this will cause a number of deaths and crashes if not already but no one has figured it out yet. the car will not start at the most important time maybe when she may one day may be trying get away from a rapist or a murder. and no i am not the only one there are over thousands of people like someone child or wife that is right at this moment stuck on the side of the road, or maybe the car turn off on i-95 while they were doing 70 on the interstate with a 18 wheeler moving at the same speed that could not stop because of the problems with the anti-theft system and ignition switch. to the point the car will cut off when you are driving it down the road without no warning, and if you make it safe to where you are going the car will not start if you try to. you have to wait 10 min. to try to start it. there many people out there having this problem chevy is not help out any. it will not give a trouble code, so they skip around with uneeded repairs. something needs to be done this is a big problem. and who is to say how many people that many have been hurt or killed because of this that may not known about this. it is a death trap and needs to have a look into. thanks *tr
2000 malibu engine gaskets had to be replaced. *ts the air condition control head was replaced. *jb
As stated by other complainants, i also have a problem with my cooling system. after losing my a/c now i'm faced with losing the whole engine. my car continuously runs hot the so called dexcool coolant keeps squirting over the engine and reading other complaints i'm facing either intake repairs or water pump and thermostat problems. this is ridiculous so many people having similar problems neither gmc or our so called would step in and put and end to this mess. i guest lobbyist are more important than the safety of america. *tr
I bought my 2000 chevy malibu from rod and ty's all star auto in puyallup, wa on 7/5/05. i bought the extended warranty/repair insurance. i have put over $600 of repairs into my car, only to find out that i need a new fuel pump, which is another $756.26 and the warranty people will only pay $425 for a substandard part. i also have some wires i need to have replaced, the a/c has never worked, even though they told me it did, the cd player destroys my cds and sometimes just won't play them at all, and i have a squeaky sound coming from the steering or suspension on the front end of my car. i paid over $13,000 for this car when it was 5 years old and had 74k miles on it (i got screwed) and now all these problems are coming up on it. the even cr*ppier part is, i still owe $9000 on it and it's only worth $2500 on trade in. what the heck am i supposed to do with this lemon piece of cr*p car? i'm super angry and will never buy another american car ever! by the way, i checked carfax and 11 records came up for this car! should i pay the $19.99 to find out about my car, or is 11 records pretty normal? should i worry?! *nm
(1) car would not start on the first try on several occasions (2) car would not start & battery could not be jump-started - battery acid & corrosion were all over the positive post engine wire (3) had car towed to mechanic who replaced battery & installed separate connectors to the positive post wire(old battery not available). *nm
The air conditioner stopped working on fan speeds 1 and 2. after pulling out the blower motor resistor, i found out half the circuit was burned out. after replacing the resistor, the fan works on all speeds. i threw out the old part. *jb
Had trouble starting car. replaced battery, alternator and belt. same thing happened; car would turn over, but not fire. automobile repaired, replaced battery; next day, car would not start again. would start with a jump, but when i stop, it dies. *ak 3 occurences; same problem. i've used aaa 3 times for same item. i only have 1 more service call left!!! also, interior lights don't work all the time. brake noise on right side.
2000 chevrolet malibu, 20,000 miles - dealership informed me that they had to replace the front brake rotors again. this is the third set of rotors. it is not covered under warranty (i bought extended warranty) and there are no recalls. this is a problem specific to malibu's of this time period. 3 sets of brake rotors in 20,000 miles? unheard of and absolutely qualifies for a "lemon part". this should be paid for by gm, but instead it is a profit stream for them. can you help?*ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the hazard lights and turn signals would function intermittently. she could never pinpoint when they would malfunction. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions; however, the lights functioned properly each time and they could not duplicate the failure. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer regarding nhtsa campaign id number 03v327000 (exterior lighting:hazard flashing warning lights:switch) and they installed a new switch. the remedy corrected the issue; however, the failure recurred in the latter part of 2008. the dealer stated that the repair would be at the contact's expense again because the recall repair had previously been performed. in addition, the heater did not work. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 62,902 and failure mileage was 42,668.
While driving anti theft light illuminated on the dashboard. consumer had to completely shut off the vehicle off before the light wnt off. contacted the dealer. however, the problem recurred. *ak
We unfortunately own a 2000 chevy malibu. we have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. we have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728.00. the air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. the turn signals are nonfunctional and our vin number is not included in the recall although it should be. then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around 800.00 to fix. the newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100.00 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. after looking over your site i found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. i feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 malibu's. please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it. *jb
The anti-theft system automatically locked the vehicle. this caused the vehicle not to move. consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and dealer could not resolve the problem. *ak
On your site i have found many complaints regarding coolant leak due to poor sealing of the maniflod gasket that according the sevice bulletin on this site, requires new gasket type to replace the old, and the intake manifold bolts cleaned and coated with thredlocker and torqued to a revised spec. this has already been done once to my car at about 30k miles and fortunately cover under warranty, if not it would have cost me $1050, problem is now the car is doing the same thing again at 79k miles and is no longer under warranty....how many times should this happen? was the service bulletin put out as a permamant solution for this problem? if not how long should this work be guaranteed? why was there not a recall on this problem? does there have to be a fatality to recall a vechicle? in addition i also have had the problem with the hazard warning switch that also effected the wipers, neither would work, again this repair was submitted as warranty work. i have complained several times to bob bell chevy about how hot the dash instruments get to touch and have already had to have related electrical problems repaired, to note..when i first complained about the heat when touched to change intrument settings i was told "that's normal". granted my extended warranty covered some of the work but i still had to pay a $250 deductable w/each problem. all these problems have been reported on this nhtsa site by many people and addition others i know personally and who i have had many discussions with also have the same year malibu with all the same problems....why hasn't the manufact. recalled the car for theses problems, surely all can cause fire safety problems. how are recalls determined and what can we all do????????????? i never dreamed chevrolet would be so cheesy. my last car was 12 years old and olds custom cruiser wagon - never gave me a problem that was so major as these noted here, i should have never got rid of it for this malibu!*ak
Car was getting hot then cooling back down, while getting hot heater would not work. took to mechanic, had thermostat and water pump replaced. car ran fine for a couple of days, then same problem. took back to mechanic. he said its possible the thermostat purchased was defective. installed new thermostat from the dealership. got in car did not get hot and cool back down it got to normal operating temperature and heater worked. three days later, car started getting hot, cooling back down and bubbling the water out of the overflow reservoir. there are no leaks anywhere,no blown gasket, or cracks. this problem is becoming a big pain. i think it is a defect caused by manufacturer and if the problem cant be fixed, i know ill never own another gm {great mistake} vehicle again. *nm
My 2000 malibu which currently has 50,000 miles on it started losing coolant at about 48,000 miles. i have spent close to $1,000 dollars trying to get it to stop losing fluids. the last repair was a new gasket set per service bullitin #03-06-01-010 dated march of 2003. is there any other course of action that i can take. i cannot afford any more expenses on it. also the turn signals seem to fail when my car heater does not heat up, they come back if i turn my emergency flasers on and then off. *ak
Independent shop replaced the intake manifold at owner expense of $800. dollars and has had problems with the air conditioner. dealer notified. please provide further information. *ph
Intermittently when the brake pedal was applied, the brakes grabbed so hard that the entire vehicle vibrated severely. when this occurred, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. this resulted in extended stopping distance. the brake rotors warped. on one occasion this failure caused lost of control, in which the consumer almost crashed into an 18 wheeler, but was able to pull over to the medium. the dealership has acknowledged that there was a problem with the braking system, but was unable to correct the problem, and was now refusing to work on the vehicle. *ak there was a rattle under the hood at the firewall area while the vehicle was in motion, the hose assembly was found rubbing under the vehicle, both front rotors had wore thin, the fuel pump sender did not hold the correct amount of fuel pressure, there was an open circuit in the 24x crank sensor, there was a rattle in the front suspension due to weak front lower control arms which were noisy (the right lower control arm was replaced), the coolant level sensor shorted, the water pump assembly leaked coolant, there was a vibration at highway speeds, hardware was bad and was loose in the caliper, rotor pulsation which was replaced per bulletin, the turn signal was inoperative, and the a/c had internal damage and would cut on and off. *sc
Front brakes (rotors) replace at 22,000miles the brake pads out lasted the rotors - that can't happen ??? it seems they(gm) have some type of design problem. *ak
1. paint is chipping off on fromt bumper and lower driver side 2. turn signals and hazard lights only work sometimes
Air conditioner switch turns on and off. vibration in front end when braking. turn signals work intermitently. ticking noise in engine until warm. windows fog excessively. shame on chevrolet. *ak
may 02 my vehicle was taken in for brakes and front end noise, the brakes were replaced and was told that the dealership did not have time to correct the front end problem (which they noted was covered by my warranty) and to reschedule for that problem. i did so in july 02 and at that time, they charged me for the work and tried to blame me for the problem so i paid $281.75 for this work which was previously noted that would be covered by my warranty. my battery has been replaced 3 times. the vehicle was overheating several times: in october 3, 2002, october 29, 2002, and in december 2002. i was forced to pay for at a cost of $280.52 for the dec. 2002 problem. in march 2003 the vehicle was taken in to the dealership again for front suspension noise, and it was determined that a right upper strut mount had callapsed. in may 2003 the vehicle has again overheated and they could not explain why the problem continues. the young man that i spoke with when i arrived indicated that they (the dealership) was unsure as to why the vehicle was overheating and to just drive it because his truck does it all the time on the highway and they had no explanation as to why the batteries that they were replacing kept cracking and leaking. when i expressed my concern regarding the problem and my safety concerns, he just blew me off as if i was just complaining. once again, it is now july 2003 and for the 4th time, my vehicle is overheating and overheating. in addition on serveral occasions i also indicated to the dealership, that there was a vibrating and shimbling when my brakes are applied and it makes it hard to controll the vehicle, not once would they address the issue with me nor have i been notified or any defects or recalls with the brake system for the 2000 chevy malibu. i am very concerned with my safety. in addition, my tires continuously loose air and the tread is separation from my left rear tire.*ak
I bought my car on 7/21/01, it has been in for repairs 10/3/01, 7/12/02,12/11/02, 6/23/03 and 6/24/03. the problem is electrical and the engine as well. chevrolet has run diagnostics many times but is not able to fix the problem for good. everytime i take my car in, i am told it's now something different that has broken. my car will break down and sometimes if i allow it to sit for 10 - 20 minutes it will start right back up. for as many times as my car has been repaired, it has broken down at least three times before i take it in. my dispute with chevy is my car is a lemon. they cannot determine what is wrong with it because diagnostics is unable to duplicate the problem. chevy informed me that does not mean there isn't a problem it just means the computer cannot detect it. i have filed with the bbb auto line but because my car has more than 24,000 miles they say i am out of luck. chevy is unwilling to do anything about the problems i am having with my car. my dispute is should a car break down at least 5-10 times a year?
Engine overheating, also the turn signals are erratic, when they do not work i have to turn my emergency flashers on, then off, and the turn signals work then. as far as the overheating goes, i took it in for repair (over $350.00) they said they found water in the oil and replaced head gasket. it still is not fixed. this car has 45,000 miles.
I bought my chevy malibu 02/01 and i have 39,000 miles and already i had problems with the air condition switch. the ac settings change on their own as you are driving the car. this causes the compressor to turn on and off, eventually causing premature compressor failure. my brakes were squeaking so i went to just brakes to get them changed and it cost 636.00. i had to have a four wheel friction reline, disc pads rf and lf, brake shoes relined rr and lr, rotors were new (could not cut) machine rf lf, drum machine rr lr, wheel cylinders new rr lr, bleed, flush, fill and adjust brake system, etc. i went to the dealer and they said "because i did not bring the vehicle to them, to get serviced there was nothing they could do about it because they did not look at the material." even though i had the material for them to look at. so i guess i have to eat the $700.00 just because of their defective material. *jb
The paint on hood started chipping @ or about 30k dealer said not warranty problem. beginning apr 2002 car intermitantly has had a "surging" immediately after starting & putting in gear. at first just 1 or 2 times in 3 or 4 mos. now the last 8-9 weeks it has happened more & more frequently, then 2 weeks ago the cruise control became erratic in activation & now won't work at all.
Ac automatically turns itself off switch replaces. whining sound occurs during ac/heat fan operation fan motor replaced. ac/heat directional controls work intermittently problem continues. transmission slipping upon slow acceleration reported 3 times 1st & 2nd times couldn't duplicate problem 3rd time in shop 30 days replaced multiple components. engine misfiring diagnostics indicated 3,6,2,5 cylinders misfiring replaced all ignition coil packs problem continues. turn signal buzzes and clicks hazard switch replaced. air leak around passenger side door reported 2 times 1st time couldn't duplicate 2nd time door realigned. brakes cause excessive vibrations upon stopping rotors and pads replaced at 24000 miles reoccuring at 38000 miles.*ak
I bought my 2000 malibu brand new in september 1999.... my engine was pinging and making all kinds of noise, even when warm.... brakes are very hazardous to public safety... i have been to the dealer numerious times for rotor and pad replacements and even gm's so called new thicker and improved rotors they installed on my car was just as bad as all the other ones ... i almost lost control of my car when i was traveling 65 miles per hour on our local highway when i was almost had a wreck due to complete failure of my brakes... my car vibrated so badly and did not slow down...at all!!....i thought i had 2 front tire blowouts... i pulled over on the expressway and my tires were fine it was my brakes...... i went straight to a local autozone and purchased new rotors and pads....gm needs to issue a recall asap before someone gets seriously injured or killed!......i have called gm and made a complaint and was told no recalls were made..... another issue im having is it takes 3 or 4 times to get my car started ... not sure why my car is having all of these problems but it is at a local gm dealership as i type this .......i hope they will be able to fix the noise from the engine and my cd player that goes in and out of power and sometimes wont release my cd's .... i have given up on gm brakes. *ak
While driving about any mph and then when turning on turn signal light steering wheel will make a buzz noise.*ak consumer states steering wheel shakes when brakes are applied, vehicle was taken into dealershop 2 months after purchase, air conditioning would only blow on floor, control panel was replaced. *jb
Vehicle would jump when trying to stop. rotors were warped. consumer had to put on 5 sets of rotors since jan 2001. contacted dealer who wanted consumer to extend warranty.*ak the consumer stated that the front rotors are warped causing brake pulsation. the a/c does not flow out of the correct vents due to a/c control failure, the a/c control head also shorted out. the door was hard to open and close due to the lock being misaligned. engine makes a clunk noise. while driving the vehicle surges. left rear speaker shorted out. there is a clicking noise coming from the front when turning, consumer later stated that there was a chirping noise coming from the steering column. *yh
Hazard and signal lights malfunctions engine noise (constant squeaking or ticking) air conditioning malfunctions. *jb
Consumer states that tires experience abnormal tire wear and are noisy, firestone affinity. dealer replaced left front bearing and hub assembly. they also tightened front control arm. the tires have been rotated, however noise continues and tires continue to wear, possible suspension problem. *slc *nm
3 months after i bought malibu in july, 2000 i was driving at 65 mph when my care lost all power. dealer told me that there was something wrong with the fuel indicator wiring and was falsely reading the amount of gas i had which resulted in my running out of gas at 65mph. problem has not repeated itself. at 21,000 miles my signal indicator lights failed and my hazard switch had to be replaced. at 23,000 miles my evaporator vent valve had to be replace (engine light remained on constantly). at 20,000 miles my car was vibrating whenever my brakes were applied. dealor said front brakes worn out and rotors out of round and they replaced the front brakes and refaced the rotors. at 33,000 miles, care again vitrated whenver brakes applied and dealer told me again that it was not under warranty and was happening because of "hot spots" and that my rotors needed to be cut even though they had just been fixed at 20,000 miles. was never told that manufacturer was having a problem with malibu brakes and was told it would cost approxiamtely $700.00 to fix rotors and it was my responsibility. my sevice for the brakes was done at future chevrolet in old bridge, nj. *ak
I purchased a new 2000 chevrolet malibu. six months after owning the car i began having brake problems. upon applying the brakes, the entire front of the vehicle to vibrate and the steering wheel shook violently to the left and right. i took my 6 month old vehicle to a dealership and they advised the front rotors were warped. they replaced the rotors. later, this same defect occurred three more times. chevrolet only made two more repairs. each time they simply replaced the rotors and placed a shim between the axles and the rotor. this same manufacturers design flaw occurred on the flowing year and make vehicles: 1997-2000 chevrolet malibu 1997-1999 oldsmobile cutlass 1999-2000 oldsmobile alero 1999-2000 pontiac grand am i complained to chevrolet about the problem, but nothing was done. the district representative in san antonio simply tried to avoid me. chevrolet_x0019_s on line complaint system also did nothing. again, there has never been a recall for this brake problem. the main cause of this problem is due to the small (thin) size of the brake rotors, which caused a failure to disperse heat adequately. if a driver drives into a rain storm or to a car wash and the hot rotors cool too rapidly they will warp. please see gm service bulletin # 00-05-23-002, dated february 2000 for more information. the maddening thing about this situation is that chevrolet knew about this problem when i purchased my car. chevrolet/gm failed to recall all these vehicles, and even though they knew it was a flaw in their engineering and design, they left the problem in the hands and pocket books of their customers. how many accidents have been caused by this type of corporate irresponsibility. this is a deceptive trade practice. *nlm
The rotors were out of round and the pads were faulty causing the vehicle to vibrate and make noise when the brakes are applied. nlm
Brakes on vehicle have been replaced three times in past year. contacted dealer, and there was not much dealer could do. *ak also, gas guage failed twice. the passenger seat recliner was damaged. the electric out let broke and a/c heating system failed. *yh
The brakes don't stop properly. the brakes have been changed 3 times. the rotors have been turned once and changed once. the blinkers don't work 95% of the time and the emergency flashers never work properly. the ac settings change on their own as you are driving the car. this causes the compressor to turn on and off, eventually causing premature compressor failure. the vehicle has died 4 times as we were driving down the road, once almost getting us killed as we were turning in front of a truck. also, the brakes have almost caused us to be in a wreck. we have almost been rear ended because of the turn signal failure. the manufacturer and the dealership has had many times to fix this vehicle with no success. to this point, we have not been involved in a motor vehicle accident. however, is it going to take me or my family being killed to get something done with this vehicle?
The vehicle experienced excessive brake shimmy due to warped rotors, also the front brake pads have uneven wear. nlm
