Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Air bag complains that it needs service. the light on the dash will stay on indefinitely. sometimes the light will not come on and the car will not display an error, other times it will appear at the time that i start the vehicle and will not turn off for months. other times it randomly turns on while driving.

Air bag warning light on. dealer says the seat belt needs to be replaced due to a bad sensor in it. i was told they see this problem a lot on this model. i have also been told the bags won't deploy in an accident unless this is fixed. i simply cannot afford it and the car is out of warranty. *tr

Check airbag indicator light appears and "check air bag" appears in driver info center soon after starting driving the vehicle. this occurs every time the vehicle is used, not intermittently. *tr

I have had numerous problems with my 2009 impala. from the very beginning with only 100+ miles on it and the problems continue today. the dash will say reduced engine power and as i was going down the road at 55 miles an hour my car just shut off. i was able to get it to the side of the road and just sat there wondering what was going on. it wouldn't do anything, it was just completely off. i was about to call for aaa and tried one more time and it started. this happened again in november of 2013 as well and i was going 45 on a country rd. again i was able to pull to the side and sat there and waited again. when this happens the car will do nothing. i have problems with my traction control, making a strange grinding type noise and bogs the car down from moving when i am trying to accelerate from a stop or trying to turn either left or right. i have had problems with my air bag lights coming on and telling me to service my air bags. it comes on and goes off and comes on and goes off. the dash light will come on and tell me to shut engine off now for low oil pressure, this has happened for 4 years, the car is 5 years old. this car was never a good car from the very day it came off the lot. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala lt. the contact stated the driver side air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently. the problem recurred numerous time. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was unknown.

Service airbag light came on very slightly then over a period remained on all the time. it was the passenger side airbag that needed replacement but this makes all airbags inoperable i was told. i then filed case #[xxx] with gm and audia motor millbrook ny but i was told my vehicle not on recall and i had to pay the entire $638.01 because of the mileage currently 163,663. this is not something a consumer should pay as it is a basic safety device. this is the original airbag that was never deployed nor damaged. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the engine failed to start. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. in addition, the contact stated that although the vehicle has never been involved in a crash the air bags had to be replaced a total of eleven times. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was unavailable.

2009 chevy impala 3.5l ffv - my "passenger airbag" light has been coming on intermittently since early spring 2013. in august 2013, my "brake" light suddenly came on while driving. there didn't appear to be any handling issues. both the regular brakes & parking brake worked normally the brake fluid level was full. for a few months the "brake" light would come on sporadically & alarm while driving, all without any changes in driving or braking ability. around september 2013, the "traction control" & "check engine" lights came on. again, there did not seem to be any issue with handling. these lights also came on & off randomly & they were seldom all on simultaneously. occasionally, the warning panel also says, "engine power reduced" & acceleration & power are diminished. there's also been a "low pressure left rear tire." the left front tire was found to be low, but the rear tire was ok. tonight, the "check engine" & "traction control" lights came on & the display said "engine power reduced." suddenly, it said, "starting disabled service throttle" & my car essentially lost all power. the steering also locked up. it was very difficult to pull off of the road. i restarted the car after about 1 minute, & the "traction control" light was no longer on, but the "check engine" light was. i was able to drive again, without difficulty. *tr

Service airbag light comes on intermittently, but goes out in cold weather

The airbag needs servicing light comes on as soon as i start the engine and the seatbelt light for the passenger seat goes on even if there is noone in the seat and it stays on when there is a passenger. the car was never in an accident or any kind of collision. this is just going to be another unnecessary expense. *tr

My impala has a very bad electrical problem. my air bag light has been on and the manual said it can deflate at any given time. my wipers half the time don't want to come on or work. my horn and alarm sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. the car shakes really bad when i drive it, especially the steering wheel. it also burns oil like crazy.i trust my 99' chevy suburban over my brand new 09' impala. it is the most dangerous car i have ever had and i wish i never would have bought it. it definitely has triple the amount of problems then my 99' suburban had. *tr

I am having similar issues as everyone else, when driving on the freeway, i was going about 70 mph and than my service traction control light came on followed by engine power reduced with the mil light, the car speed immediately decreased to about 50 mph, no accident occurred, pulled over and let it sit for awhile than restarted it. it is intermittent and occurs randomly. it is safety concern as this can cause an accident. the air bag light also comes off and on, i had taken to chevy dealer and was advised the air bag sensor needed to be replaced, was about $500 in work, and it was not covered under my extended warranty. i am not able to afford the repair so i am driving in a vehicle where if their is an accident, the air bags will not deploy. *tr

I was knocked unconscious and have no recollection until gaining awareness in the hospital. the wreck happened in robinson township, pa and i was driving home. the airbag did not deploy as it should have. thankfully, i was wearing my invisalign, which significantly minimized the sharpness of my teeth or else i would have lost half my tongue. it was still severely damaged and you can see the scar. a mri showed the concussion. i had to spend $6,000 on my car to be fixed. it took me almost a month to be able to walk on conrete due to the damage to my body. i have been through physical therapies and still have neck and nerve damage. *tr

Vehicle shutoff and i lost steering and braking causing vehicle to crash and airbags did not deploy. the vehicle was in motion.

My vehicle's ignition switch shut off, which caused me to lose steering. when i crashed, the airbag failed to deploy. i was driving in a large parking lot and went over a speed bump. i was knocked out but the police report indicated there were no signs of braking or steering. i took my impala to the gm dealership over 12 times.

Takata recall - i have had my vehicle shut off while i was driving down the road. this has occurred at least 3 times. gm is aware and has ignored my requests for two years. a few months ago, gm attorney told me to take my vehicle to a gm dealership as soon as possible and the recall repairs would be done at no cost to me. i made him aware that my vehicle had already been sitting at a gm dealership for months waiting for the repair and the dealership refused to repair it and will not provide a rental vehicle. prior to the recall, i had numerous steering issues and had taken it to gm dealerships just to have them return it with the same problems. when the vehicle shut off, i was in a bad crash and the airbag did not deploy, resulting in me going through the windshield.

I woke up in the hospital with a brain injury, tongue nearly cut in half, thoratic sprain, neck sprain, etc. from what i have been told, i was going at least 60-65 mph when i had my front end crash and my head went through the windshield. i had numerous issues already submitted to chevy, such as the steering issues i had. the air bags did not deploy. i later was driving down the road and when i was turning my vehicle shut off. *tr

Both my husband and myself have 2009 impalas. they both have issues with the airbag lights coming on and off. has anyone else experienced problems? *tr

Air bag light came on twice under warrantee as soon as warrantee was over light came on again {2 months out of warrantee] was told by alantic chevrolet that it would cost $180 plus part and labor to fix airbag light.

At about 50000 miles the rear door actuator began to work intermittently. within months it did not work at all. the dealer said it was expensive to fix. at about 66000 miles the service air bag warning light began to come on intermittently. at 68000 miles i took it to the dealer who diagnosed the problem as an actuator. i replaced it at a cost of $400. he said i could replace the rear door actuator for another $400 which i elected not to do. when i saw a news article about an elderly, disabled man trapped in his chevrolet impala because of a defective door lock actuator, i realized that this might be a frequent problem to be addressed. *tr

the air bag light illuminated . we took the vehicle to gmc -buick dealer who said there was a problem with seatbelt anchor assembly and has had a recall. they said the car had been in for the recall id # 89931 and had been checked. we did not own the vehicle at that time. we bought the vehicle on 8/ 31/11 from a different dealership. we had owned the vehicle only 6 weeks when the problem arose. we don't know if problem was ever solved or if the trouble was just cleared. the light was off when we left the dealership this time. we believe if problem was properly repaired on the recall there would not be a problem at this time. this dealer (young- buick gmc) of owosso, mi said the cost of the repair is $190.79. we don't think that we should have to pay for this repair because it was a recall and the problem still exist. evidently the problem still exists it must of not been fixed properly. *tr

Airbag light remains on -will go out and then reappear . never know when it will go out . remains on most of the time regardless of conditions. senior and cannot afford a major repair bill, auto company's should be liable for repairs of federal mandated safety equipment. our government has failed us again. car has never been damaged or abused . now has 67000 miles. if a accident occurs , will the airbags i paid for work? if not, contact my lawyer! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. the contact was sitting idle at a traffic stop when a vehicle crashed into the driver side door of the contacts vehicle. the airbags did not deploy. the impact caused the window glass to shatter and the contact sustained lacerations to the mouth and left arm. his neck and shoulders were also injured and the contact was transported to the hospital via ambulance. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a collision facility. the failure mileage was approximately 59,000.

reference# [xxx]. as i approached the intersection, another vehicle was turning onto the street i was on. i moved over to make room, as i moved over i had to cross over a clump of snow and ice that had re froze making a rough and bumpy transition. i was about 20 feet from the stop sign. i placed my foot on the brake which was hard and unresponsive. the steering was hard and unresponsive as well. i was driving about 3-5 mph at the time. when i placed my foot on the brake it was unresponsive and it took me into the intersection where i was hit by another vehicle on the drivers side front. my airbag did not deploy. the total damage for my vehicle was $ 5,615.93. we were confused and did not understand why the brakes and the steering did not function and why with this violent of a crash that the airbag did not deploy. after reading the recall notice explaining the ignition recall it made sense that why the failure occurred. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2009 chevy impala 2lt the air bag warning light has illuminated on numerous occasions since buying the car new in january 2010. currently the light has been on for 2 weeks straight with yet another dealer visit scheduled. this warning light when illuminated renders the rest of the electronic display useless since the "service airbag" display never goes off. the dealer service department has failed to fix the problem satisfactorily for the past 4 years despite the multiple times we have had it in for the air bag warning light issue. the problem always returns and the light will stay on from several minutes to weeks. some of the explanations for returning the car to us without correcting the problem have been downright ridiculous. we have great concern about the safety of driving a vehicle with an ongoing airbag warning light issue. the vehicle only has 31,000 miles on it and has never been in an accident. *tr

We have owned this car since it was new and the airbag light never stay off after so many repairs we see no hope of it being repair. chevrolet is doing another cover up just like the ignition switch. we have spent over 700 on repairs only to still have the airbag light on.

Tl*the contact rented a 2009 chevrolet impala. while driving approximately 45 mph another vehicle crashed into her and none of the air bags deployed. the seat belts also did not securely hold any of the passengers. the police appeared on the scene and 4 major injuries were reported. all 4 passengers were taken to the hospital to have their injuries treated. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to an independent repair shop. she was not sure if the vehicle was ever examined for the cause of failure. the failure and current mileages were 12,000.

I bought a 2009 impala new after 12 weeks the air bag light came on with 2000 miles. was fix by chevrolet . then about 1year later the light came on again 6000 miles was fix again by chevrolet . then 1 year later light came on again 10000 miles was told by chevrolet it would be $180 to check code then plus parts and labor.

We purchased a 2009 chevy impala in april . my wife has a tail bone medical issue that necessitates that she sit on a special pillow while riding in a vehicle. the seat displaces her weight evenly across the seat. the problem is that the air bag sensor on the passenger compartment doesn't recognize her weight sitting on the seat, so the passenger side air bag doesn't show it is operative. we returned to the dealer who told us to set a magazine underneath her to make the sensor work. it does activate the passenger air bag "on" button sometimes, however, the majority of the time it will not activate and my wife is not protected. i called general motors and they didn't have any solution to this safety issue, except to tell me that my wife should ride in the back seat! the dealership has no further answers for us. we are extremely frustrated that my wife is riding in a brand new vehicle unprotected by her airbag nearly all the time. can you please investigate? thank you! *tr
