Subject: 2008 chevrolet impala rear tire wear. case # [xxx]vin # is [xxx] we are having a problem with our 2008 chevrolet impala. our rear tires are wearing out twice as fast as the front tires. i went to costco yesterday to have my tires rotated, after looking at the rear tires we had to buy new ones because the back tires were worn down to the metal backing, the front tires were still good. only one half of the warranty had been used. the tires were michelin x-radial dt mich passenger s/t p225/60r16 bw mspn 17457 tires with an 80,000 mile warranty. we ended up buying four new michelin tires for around $600.00. the costco guy thought that something must be wrong with the car. after i got home i checked on the internet as to what could cause this problem and found out that there was a problem with the 2007 and 2008 chevrolet impala's. there had been a service bulletin #08032a sent out in 2011 to replace the spindle rods on all the 2007 and 2008 impala's that were sold as police cars to fix this problem that they were having with rear tire wear. i would like to see that service bulletin extended all the other 2007 and 2008 chevrolet impala's. the part number for the spindle rod is the same on all 2008 impalas, police or non police. this is a major safety problem and people are going to be killed if this problem is not fixed, you just don't expect the tires to wear out so fast. we had just finished a trip were we drove freeway speeds up to 75 miles an hour. after seeing our tires i don't know how we keep from having a blow out on the back tires. i think that lots of accidents have happened with these 2007 and 2008 chevy impalas with tires blowing out because rear tire wear because the spindle bolts are engineered wrong and every one thinks its the tires fault.. gm needs to fix this problem and replace the four spindle bolts. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Premature wear on rear tires, less then a year old and ruined. *tr

While driving at highway speed, noticed some vibration from rear tires. checked tires when i got home. rear tires have extreme tread wear on the inside edge. this wear is hidden because it is on the very inside edges of the tires, and you don't notice when looking at the tires from the side of the car. most of the tire you can see looks normal. the wear is on the inner most 5% of the tread. and it is extreme wear, all the way through the steel belts. i researched and found a gm service bulletin for 2007-8 impala tire wear and suspension problems like this. but that bulletin only called for service on models with police suspension in the rear. the solution required replacement spindle arms to be installed. called gm and they will not replace my consumer spindles. but i have the same problem. this tire wear has caused bow outs and crashes if you look at reports that a google search can find. search for impala spindle and tire wear. you will be amazed at how obvious this deadly defect is. *tr

This car is so dangerous due to incredible wear on the tread on nearly new tires. all 4 tires are very worn when the tires have only 10,0000 miles on them. we are slipping and sliding on wet roads. even though we have had the car aligned -- there is something wrong with this car!!!! *tr

Just bought the car 3 weeks ago with brand new tires on them, and now the rear tires are going bald on the inside of the vehicle. going to dealership on saturday to get new tires that they are paying for on the back, but i don't know why this is happening. very unsatisfied with gm product, i want in on that lawsuit that is going against gm for this faulty year. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the vehicle is equipped with michelin tires, size p225/60r/16 (na). the contact stated that the tires were wearing prematurely. the tires were replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the tire failure mileage and dot number were unknown. the vehicle failure mileage was 70,000.

Inside tread of each back tire wears out prematurely because of an adjustment that cant be made to the rear wheels, all police vehicles have been repaired for this defect as a spindle rod with an adjuster was put in to correct it, i own a 2007 and 2008 and both cars r doing this why should the consumer be stuck for a part that should be put in at manufacture time. how can u expect gm loyalty when u treat us that way. *tr

When i stop at a light or just come to a complete stop my car doesnt seem to want to go when i step on the gas. all of a sudden it shudders and jerks forward. very dangerous when the roads are slippery! this happened just after the warranty expired, but i am guessing that it only had about 46,000 miles on the car. my dealer said i would have to pay for them to look at the car, could run into alot of money, or wait for the check engine light to come on. i have seen alot of complaints about this problem online in different impala forums. gm said its out of warranty and basically not our problem. also, all 4 of my tires were worn out on the inside after only 20,000 miles. *js

The original equipment tires on my father's car, goodyear eagles, wore so badly on the inside that the tread split near the sidewalls & was coming off. i, a 69 year old woman, was about to leave on a trip during a downpour. fortunately, the national tire store that i use discovered the problem when doing a free pressure check or i could have had a serious problem while on the road. i know that the store didn't take advantage of me because i actually looked at the tires myself. the last tire rotation was performed by the dealer at 26,593 miles & i was not advised of uneven wear at that time. *tr

I own the impala ltz...rear inner tire threads are worn. i purchased the care approx. 3 mos ago. now i am having to replace the tires. i do have warranty on the vehicle so i am going to take it back to the dealer in hopes that it will be repaired. reading the issues on here... i am having the same problem. *tr

I have a 2008 chevrolet impala and i am having a wheel alignment problem my tires are wearing uneven. the car only has 9830 miles on it .i have had a wheel alignment done on the car and a tire rotation done at 8961 miles . but that did not help my tires are still wearing uneven.advantage chevrolet checked the cars alignment on 7/25/2011 they said that they can not find a problem with the car .my tires are wearing out in 9000 miles. *tr

Purchased vehicle used june 2010, noted after buying rear tires were 2 different tires, & different from front tires. purchased 2 matching tires to present front tires, goodyear eagle p225/55 r17. put front tires on rear, new on front. noted significant inside wear both rear tires, may 2011. have put on approximately 15,000 miles in this time. i drive approximately 53 miles every workday. read article in paper, july 6th 2011 by dee-ann durbin associated press, describing lawsuit over this issue, defective spindle rods, replaced on 23,800 police vehicles by gm, not on rest of 2007-2008 impala's. believe recall should be enforced for all citizen's fairly, by gm, obviously their is a problem, or gm would not have replaced part for police cruiser's. *tr

Vehicle won't hold alignment and when it does it's still wearing out the rear tires at a rate 1/32 per 1,000 miles, it wore out the rear tires in 6,000 miles just lucky that i looked at them when i did. the vehicle has 45,000 miles on it and this is the second set of tires in 6,000 miles. *tr

In march 2009 i purchased a 2008 impala nice car. new tires were purchased at app 26000 mi. by previous owner. app19,000 mi later i must buy new tires. my rear tires wore down to the metal this winter. i did all the proper rotations and maintained proper inflation. i thought the tires were inferior but my tire people say its the car. i have a warranty on the car but the service dept says this problem is not covered. i need this problem addressed by someone. *tr

I purchased a used 2008 chevrolet on 10/15/2010 and the dealership put a current inspection certificate on the vehicle. during an unrelated visit to my auto mechanic he noticed the tires ( front only ) and stated they were not good and if he would have inspected the vehicle, he would have placed a "rejection sticker" on the m/v. i took the vehicle to the dealership who stated they were ok. went back to auto mechanic who advised me to file complaint.

Severe tire wear. 2008 chevy impala with goodyear integrity tires. had to have all four tires replaced at 33,000 miles, mind you these are 50,000 miles tires that have been rotated and kept at the recommended psi. they are severely worn on the inner and outer edges and can see the wear bars. was told by the dealership that the tires to begin with are junk! i had no choice but to replace them being that this car is a lease and only have 4 months left with it till the turn in date. the unnamed tire store told me that i need an alignment but the dealership that my car goes to never said anything about needing the alignment. *tr

In less than 30,000 miles, i've had to have wheel alignments each time i was force to replace 2 sets of rears tires on my 2008 impala due to excessive wear. before having to replace the first set of tire, i had the car into the dealership twice for car vibration at speeds of 50 to 65 mph. i was told the first time that all the wheels had to be re-balanced which did not make since to me. the second time i was told that nothing was found. then the first tire failure and fortunately only at 35 mph. this first failure was at approx. 15,000 miles. one tire, but both were worn enongh that the dealer should have forewarn me before i left the dealership. the second set of the original tires moved to the rear, wore-out at approx. 28,000 miles. i have never in my 47 years of driving had tires and mulitple alignments as i've had on this car. *tr

Noticed abnormal and excessive tire feathering. had researched and found previous to my own experience that others had the same problem, so i had been monitoring my own tires to see if it was a design flaw. one mechanic told me after i purchase 4 new tires, which only have 34,000 miles on a 50,000 mile rating, he would try an alignment to see if it need four new struts as he was assuming was the main problem behind the tire wear. i called a local gm service center to see if they had suggestions for me. the guy told me 4 new tires and the few others we have serviced with the same problem, an adjustment had to be made by elongating the holes to pull the tires into a good alignment, eliminating the outward camber. he found this info in a technical service bulletin. gm has recalled public service vehicles, ie police cars, of the same make and model, but has yet to see the public safety hazard behind this easily remedied issue. i was told it would cost me at-least $700 for prematurely worn tires and repairs and adjustments. imagine if i had been aware of this previous to my own incident. i would assume i still had 15-20000 miles of tread-life left and would be driving my car as if there were no problem at-all until my tires blew while driving my son back to his mothers house, causing an accident, killing my son and i as well as two others in another vehicle. there-in lays the safety issue. a prompt and thorough investigation will show it's a design flaw that is putting lives at risk. the sooner the defect is corrected, the sooner peoples lives and wallets can rest at ease. i would certainly be willing to answer any other questions regarding this issue. *tr

Tire pressure monitoring system provides readings for incorrect tire. tpms reported pressure for driver side rear when actual reading was for passenger front. incorrect reading could cause driver to check the wrong tire, conclude that tire was drivable, then have tire failure on the different tire. *tr

sidewalls on all the tires were wearing down abnormally!!! 19,000 miles and i need to buy 4 new tires!!! *tr

I have a 2008 chevrolet impala that has 40,000 miles on the vehicle. i will now be putting a 3rd set of tires on the car as well as getting the front end aligned once again. the car wears the tires on the front inner and outer sides. the middle of the tire looks new. the car handles horribly in wet conditions as well. *tr

Inside rear tires on '08 impala ss are worn down to the threads. extreme safely issue since this is not something you would usually notice unless it's up on a lift. does someone really need to get in a crash and get killed or kill someone before this is a recall? *tr

Severe inner tire wear on both rear tires at around 47k miles. the wire inside the tires was showing and it was unnoticeable just looking at the car. i didn't realize the tires were bad until the rear driver tire went completely flat without warning. *tr

2008 impala ltz that i purchased from bill cramer motors in donalsonville, georgia on 10/29/2009. on 2/6/2010 i had a tire blow out in bainbridge, georgia nearly causing a crash. after changing my tire, and returning home i discovered that both rear tires were worn down to the belt on the inside. after doing some research on this issue, i discovered that this is a very common issue in the late model impala's. i called the shop today (2/8/2010), and they advised me that they are unaware of this issue. i also called solomon chevrolet in dothan, alabama (1-866-646-6175). they advised me that they are very familiar with this issue, and that it needed a rear camber bolt kit and a realignment to fix this issue. the parts and labor for the kit were estimated @ $200.00 and the alignment @ $70.00. i would also like to note that my car is still under the 12,000 mile certified warranty. my car had 34,861 mile on it when i purchased it, and now it only has 45,690 miles on it. so i have put a total of 10,829 miles on it. the tires that are on my car were brand new when i purchased it. there is no way possible that i should have to be replacing 2 worn out tires within 10,829 miles'. this is unheard of' *tr

Started having issues with my 2008 chevy impala with what i thought was a tire balance problem. did required tire rotation as recommended at 6000, 10,000 and then again at 13,500. dealer said tires may be out of round and suggested road force balancing at 16,500 miles. this did not change the issue, so went to goodyear dealer and found out that the inside 2 inches of all four tires were wearing excessively with the rear two less that 2/32 inches of tread left. goodyear shot the alignment and showed that the alignment was way off and tires could not be warranted with an alignment issue. took back to chevy dealer to inform them of the alignment issue. they said alignment was not warranted after 7,500 miles and also would not replace the 4 tires. i did get the dealer to gratuitously do a 4 wheel alignment that also showed the camber and toe, especially in the rear was "out of tolerance and exceeded cross-tolerance" on their machine as well. the camber could not be adjusted without extra work (elongating the bolt holes or a chamber alignment kit). contacted gm complaint line for resolution to no avail, saying i had to prove that there is a defect on the vehicle. this is an inherent safety problem with 2007 and 2008 impalas that has fostered numerous complaint to you including 5 already this year. gm issued a tsb #08032 for police impalas that are on the same platform and suspension, but never extended that to the public. seems to me that the rear suspension has an severe defect that can cause tire blowout without warning. no tires should wear like that with less than 17,000 miles without a rear suspension and alignment problem that needs to be recalled for repair and replacement of the parts and tires. i saw at least 12 complaints in the first 24 pages of 2007 impala complaints to the odi. please investigate this problem before someone is seriously injured or killed as a result of this continuing impala issue. *tr

Rear tires had extreme excessive wear on inside in short amount of time. these were new tires. no warnings. tire was worn in such a short amount of time if i had not been looking at something in driveway it was on the verge of a blowout. these were new tires so you do not think the inside where you can not see would be down to the wires on the inside of tire. was going on long trip in 2 days something just made me look down and i saw it. i could not believe it. i took pictures. *tr

Extreme inside rear tire wear in a very short time. *tr

Purchased new 2008 chevy impala only to have excessive tire wear front and back at 13,000 miles when car was 1 1/2 year old. i needed to purchase new tires at that time. today i learned i need to purchase another set of tires at 26,500 miles. have had tires rotated regularly and aligned. i thought the first set of tires from the dealership were just "cheap" tires so when i replaced i replaced with good tires. still need a set of tires a6 13,000-14,000 miles. this is a disgrace. i am just beginning the process of having this problem corrected (i hope). gm did put bulletin # 08032 for police cars regarding this issue. i guess john q public though is not as important as the police. *tr

I own a 2008 chevy impala ss, i bought the car in october 2008. since buying the car, i have had to buy 3 sets of back tires due to excessive wearing on the tires. i have had my tires re-aligned everytime i have had to put new tires on the back, yet they continue to wear out extremely fast. the first set of tires i had to put on the car was in march 2009, then again in may 2010 (of which i needed new back tires prior to then but could not afford to buy them until that time), then i had to replace them again december 2010. i am now on my 3rd set of back tires, and am needing to replace them yet again. i have just recently learned that there is a law suit currently filed against gm, stating that there is a defect in the rear alignment spendle causing excessive wearing on the rear tires. per the news reporst on the law suit, it is requested to become a class action law suit as gm issued a letter for the police impala's to be repaired and for the owners to be reimbursed for any tires bought, however they neglected to inform the public who own 2007 & 2008 impala's with the same problems. *tt

I have had numerous issues with unusual wear and/or blowouts on the tires of my 2008 chevy impala. i first started having issue with tires in dec 2008 and still continue til this day. when i questioned if there was a possibility it was the vehicle and not the tires, i was told by the dealership in 2010, it was faulty 'factory installed' tires. i have replaced more than once all the tires on my vehicle. now i find out that gm has recalled police issue 2008 impalas but not those for the everyday consumer. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the tires were wearing prematurely. the front tires were replaced by an authorized dealer at 5,000 miles and again at 18,000 miles. the recommended tire pressure was 30 but the dealer recommended 35, which the contact believed was a safety hazard because it was outside of the original manufacturer's recommendations. the manufacturer offered no assistance when contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 5,000 and the current mileage was approximately 19,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact noticed that the tire pressure monitoring indicator constantly illuminated on the instrument control panel. she took her vehicle to a dealer, but they could not identify the failure and provide a remedy. the failure mileage was 26,000 and current mileage was 29,437.

I bought a brand new impala, year 2008. after approximately 10k miles i experienced a vibration in the rear when braking. when i brought the car to radley chevrolet in fredericksburg, they told me that the rotors were warped and it was my fault and not covered by warranty. they said that the lug nut torque was not correct and uneven. i never touched the lug nuts or rotated the tires as the torque issue was rear only and tread wear proved there had been no rotation. i went to chevrolet customer service who stated the radley service manager was such a great guy and he believed the service manager. when i explained that the tread wear proved the tires were not rotated he then told me that not rotating the tires was a maintenance violation also. i asked him that now you are claiming the uneven torque was due to me not rotating the tires. i am frustrated as i am right and never touched those tires or nuts. i am not even sure where the wrench is. *tr

I bought a 2008 chevy impala, and had to buy new tires 3 times i constantly complain to my chevy dealer they told me their was no problem with these cars . i finally had no choice but to trade my car only after it was three years old because i would have to buy my forth set of tires. i still have my receipts from all the tires i bought i am furios i want to be part of the class action suit against gm. *kb
