We have classified the 216 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Impala about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact stated the transmission, speed odometer and antilock brake is faulty. contact stated she had to replace the rotor, pads four times and the transmission is jerking. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and contact the was told she has to pay the expenses for these repairs. there are no recalls or warranties on the vehicle. the vin number is unknown. the failure mileage was 85,000.
Tl* the contact owns 2005 chevrolet impala. the speedometer displays inaccurate readings. as a consequence he cannot determine the speed he's driving. the manufacturer stated that his information was included in the law suit; therefore they will not repair the vehicle. he was then referred to the dealer, whom will charge an $100.00 diagnostic fee. no repairs were made. the failure and current mileages were 67,000. the vehicle identification number was unavailable.
2005 impala bought in 96 w/25k miles. after 1 year car had 37k miles and started exhibiting crazy performance on the display gauges. sometimes the gas indicator would reflect an empty gas tank though it was nearly full. the speedometer would reflect 35 miles while the car was stopped and other speeds when in motion. the temperature gauge would tack way over to the right indicating excessive temperatures. i tried to get this fixed but the problem was intermittent and could not be duplicated when taken to the shop. i have been told the entire instrument cluster was known for these issues. now that i've had the car a few more years the crazy markings are more frequent. the biggest concern is the temperature gauge because i can not tell when i have a real problem. i took it to a chevy dealer and after a number of calls to the corp office by the dealer, gm would not do anything about this other than charge me almost $800. what irks me is that there is a recall for this on gm trucks but not on cars. shouldn't that be a clue? i'll go back to nissan as soon as i can. *tr
Chevrolet speedometer does not work correctly. it will jump or drop at any moment and you have no idea what speed you are actually traveling at. this happens regularly and apparently is a common knowledge problem with these gm cars. *tr
My 2005 impala has a security system that activates without warning not allowing me to start my car. *tr
Speedometer began not working. now the tachometer & heat gauge don't work. am going to have to pay to have the gears in the instrument cluster rebuilt because they've bit the dust & i have no way to tell how fast i'm going or how hot my engine might be. *tr
Defective speedometer. speedometer frequently looses calibration at low and high speeds causing a misreading of vehicle speed. *tr
In july, 2009, i noticed that my temperature gauge on my 2005 impala was not working. i took it to the chevrolet dealer who told me the instrument cluster would need to be replaced and it would affect my mileage. it was a cost prohibitive issue, so i elected just to keep an eye on my radiator and coolant. in september, my fuel gauge quit working, and since that time, i've had to gauge when fuel was low by clocking my mileage. now, as of today, my speedometer has failed, and this is a problem. i have no way of knowing how fast i'm going. i've checked several sites online, and this seems to be a common issue with the chevrolet impalas, and one that is a safety issue with regard to speed. despite the numerous complaints, there has been no recall on the cluster. how would a person go about trying to get a recall issued? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact stated the speedometer was exhibiting failures by inaccurately reading the speed of which the vehicle traveled. in order to maintain an accurate speed, he would have to utilize the cruise control mechanism. the dealer advised the contact that the entire instrument cluster would need to be replaced. the contact was concerned that only the stepper motor would need replacement as opposed to the entire instrument cluster. he was also concerned with being unable to determine the rate of speed in which he was traveling. the failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage was unknown.
I own a 2005 chevy impala and for the last year my speedometer has failed on several occasions. the speedometer will jump without warning leading to unsafe traveling conditions especially while traveling on highways. cycling the ignition will temporarily fix the issue but this has become a hassle. when i started to research the issue on the internet i found hundreds of complaints on the same issue. i also found where there was a class action law suit that forced the repair of the same problem on other vehicles for the same model year range. why do we as consumers have to pay for and fix the problem when it is an obvious defect in manufacturing? why didn't the class action lawsuit alert the nhtsa that this is potentially a bigger problem? do we have to wait for deaths like the toyota recall before someone takes this seriously? imagine that you think you are traveling at a safe rate of speed on ice covered roads when in reality you are not because of defective electronics' hmmm. i refuse to pay for a known defect, us consumers are entitled to protection from a blatant disregard to manufacturing standards and safety. i welcome your response. http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-impala/tjsmiqpd8j0ft5dk8 http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2005/accessories-interior/speedometer_cluster_gauges_gone_haywire.shtml http://wiki.answers.com/q/how_do_you_change_the_speedometer_on_a_2005_chevy_impala http://www.justanswer.com/questions/jhfu-i-have-a-2005-chevy-impala-the-speedometer-works-correctly http://www.2carpros.com/forum/2005-chevy-impala-speedometer-does-not-work-all-the-time-vt115821.html http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2005/chevrolet/impala/?q=&page=5 http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ee9e83d/13472 http://www.gmspeedometerrecall.com/. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy impala..mileage about 83000. my problem started last year when the speedometer just froze. when i got home and shut the car off it still stayed in the same position. i turned the key on and off and the speedometer went down 5mph each time i turned the key until it went back to z ero.. then sometimes after it sticks it unfreezes and starts going again. i've had the speed reading 120mph before standing still. this happens every day while driving and is very unsafe because i never know how fast i am going.. *tr
Speedometer and gas gauge stopped working. *tr
While driving down the road my instrument cluster lights went out. then i was wondering why everybody was going so slow (45mph) on my speedometer. so i passed them. i had a gps and turned it on it was recording 75mph. it was 20 mph off. *tr
2005 impala, failed instrument panel. like the other 65+ complaints, my instrument panel began failing at 75,000 miles. at first, could reset with key to acc numerous times, no longer works. unplug battery resets, but at any time starts again. it seems especially bad in cold weather. when speedometer does work, jumps from 20-40-60 mph with no change in actual speed of vehicle, or drops to 0. cost is over $500 from shadetree mechanic, $800 dealership, with no vehicle for days. now, at 90,000 the temp gauge is gone too, constantly straight down, 400+ degrees, but vehicle not running hot. am starting to fill gas tank even when not necessary, should be the next gauge to fail in the cluster. unacceptable that there is no recourse for the consumer for what a $10 part, which is why it failed in the first place. my guess is, it isn't a pricey enough car to rate a repair. *tr
I previously had my 2004 pontiac grand am's passlock system foul up on me. i found information about it online and got it started again. now my 2005 chevy impala did it today. this passlock system is faulty and expensive to replace each time it does this and it's almost a guarantee it will happen again. when it happens multiple times, it becomes a danger to me and my family when it could foul the computer and die going down the highway at 70, losing all control of steering and brakes. there should be a recall on this part. *tr
2005 chevy impala speedometer sticking or not working at all. *tr
Speedometer is malfunctioning by giving inaccurate readings at slow and high speeds. *tr
I owned a 2005 chevy impala. the odometer on this car goes crazy. i don't know how fast i am going. i search the internet and hundreds of people have the same trouble with chevy impalas and odometer. they need to recall this car and have them fix. *tr
Speedometer does not work on my 2005 chevy impala and gm has admitted this is due to faulty parts. this is a dangerous situation since it is impossible to determine accurate speed. *tr
2005 chevy impala speedometer very sporadic in working may say you are going 40 and you are going 75 or may say you are going 80 and you are going 35 extremes to 120 and lows to 0. it started messing up around 70,000 miles and the dealer says this is not a recall even though many people are having this problem with the impalas, please help. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving approximately 50-55 mph, the contact noticed that the speedometer was not working properly; it indicated incorrect speeds. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that they would have to perform a diagnostic test. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 73,000 and the current mileage was approximately 88,000. updated 01/19/11 *bf the consumer stated numerous of calls to gm a new instrument cluster was furnished for free. the consumer was responsible for the labor to install it. updated 02/22/11 updated 09/27/11 *bf the consumer stated gm agreed to furnish the instrument for free if he agreed to pay for the labor. the entire instrument cluster had to be replaced in order to replace the speedometer. the consumer agreed to pay for the labor at a cost of $ 136.00. updated 09/30/11*jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the speedometer displays inaccurate readings. when the vehicle is parked, the speedometer reads 30 mph. while driving 60 mph, it reads 100 mph. the dealer stated that it would cost $500 to repair the speedometer. the contact believes a recall should be issued. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 59,000 and current mileage was 60,100.
My 2005 impala that has 47,000 miles on is nolonger has working speedometer, gas gauge or temp gauge. this is a safety issue due to i nolonger have correct information on the speed that i'm driving with my children in the car. i can only use my educated guess on how much gas i have and will not know that my car is overheating. this could cause a fire and we wouldn't know until it was too late. i have spoken with gm reguarding the insturment cluster problem they told me that it has only been recalled on trucks . this issue thur a mechcanic will cost me $500.00 + to have fixed however reading complaints online its very obvious that this issue needs to be recalled, just about all gm's seem to have this issue ( faulty stepper motor's ) find it hard to belive that gm will not recall this issue when the parts will only be $15.00 to repair for the safety of there customers nor will they sell you the stepper motors to fix the issue yourself. i feel unsafe in my car that has low mileage that has been well taken care of. please recommend a recall for the cluster so that gm will have to be responsible for its products and customers safety. i used to think that buy an american car would do good things for our country however now think that american companys could care less about its fellow american's there safety and standing behind the product they sold ... *tr
The speedometer on the vehicle does not work, and it has almost cost me to get a ticket, since i don't know how fast i am going. they is a pending settlement, but that does not help me. the speedometer said that i was going 20mph, and when i was pulled over, i was told that i was going 67mph in a 45mph zone. this has been going on with the vehicle for the past 2 months, and don't have the money to take it to the dealer to get it fixed. *tr
The speedometer just stopped working, the day before it was fine. i know alot of people who have impalas and their speedometers don't work either. this is not safe driving not knowing how fast your going. i have kids and i travel alot so i think chevy should re-call this soon. *tr
Speedometer said i was doing 87 mph when car was shut off and in park. took car to dealer, had instrument cluster replaced. also had them check pop in the steering( made noise when i bought it from dealer with less than 31,000 miles on it. dealer replaced instrument panel cluster, steering shaft and cruise control sensor. ( cruise control would just shut off and work periodically.) it was really just an adjustment on the brake sensor switch that needed adjustment. had to take car back for the adjustment to brake pedal sensor. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy impala. the speedometer will quit working and either drops to zero or shows a slower speed than what you are traveling. in addition the temperature gauge will also show a lesser temperature than what is normally shown. this is a problem that has going on since 2007. i have tried to get this repaired but the technicians say they have an issue isolating the problem. *tr
2005 chevrolet impala instrument cluster failure. speedometer works intermittently and temp gauge stopped working all together. unsure if fuel gauge is accurate. will gm repay me if i am issued a speeding ticket? unsure if engine is operating at safe operating temperature or if engine damage is occurring due to inoperative gauge. please recommend quickly to general motors to either recall these defective clusters or add this vehicle to the letter of understanding they issued for the suv and trucks with the same problem.*tr
My speedometer does not work it started out reading the wrong speed now it is pegged all the way out the needle lays on the d for drive. i feel this is a safety issue due to never knowing how fast you are going. *tr
About 1 1/2 yrs ago i bought a 2005 impala, within 4 mths my speedometer, gas gauge & rpm gauge all started acting up. my gas gauge goes way past the full line and never comes back down, the speedometer will say i am doing over 200 km when i may be doing 50 km, the only way i have found to "fix" this is by letting the car cool off for about ten minutes and then turn the key off and on until it drops the speedometer back down to zero, and my rpm gauge will drop to under zero while driving. this happens mostly during cold weather, but has been known to happen while highway driving during the rest of the year. i have been in contact with the rcmp and they feel this is a disaster waiting to happen. i have been in contact with the company and have only been told that i may get a discount on having the part in question replaced...i was told by one dealership it was a cluster problem in the dash and the part alone is $600 not including labor. i have to travel 6 hrs a month atleast for doctors appointments and the safety issue makes me very nervous on the drives to and from my doctor appointments as i do not know how fast i am going on the curves, down hills, or on icy patches on the secondary roads i have to take to my appointments. i know there are other people who have had the same issue from the complaints on the internet. the first time this happened i was december 2008 and since then has happened numerous times. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy impala with 45,200 mile on it and from day one i have had a electrical problem of some sort every time i am driving all my lights will go out, even all my panel lights inside. i have to flick my brights on and off so they will come back on. some times this happens two or three times a week. i have had it back to the chevy dealers twice and they say there is nothing wrong. what do i do? thank you. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving approximately 35 mph, the speedometer displayed 100 mph. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the speedometer failed. the repair would cost $350. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer stated that because the vehicle was not included in a recall, no repair or compensation would be made. the failure mileage was 41,200 and current mileage was 42,000. updated 03-04-09 *bf updated 03/04/09. *jb
This past summer in june, the speedometer would read 40-80 mph when stopped/idle. problem subsided after a few weeks. more recently, within the last 2 weeks, my speedometer in my 2005 impala would gradually go down gradually during long distance travel (100mi+) on the i-10. to me, this is a very dangerous issue with the car. *tr
The speedometer reading on our 2005 chevrolet impala is inaccurate/malfunctioning. sitting still at the stop light it reads 100 mph and other times 30 mph pulling out of the driveway it reads 70 mph and at other times it points straight down at the neutral indicator with no reading at all. our vehicle has 76200 miles on it and he contacted the local dealership which in turn told us that gm would pay for the problem on vehicles with less than 80000 because it was so common but general motors headquarters said since they were filling bankruptcy they would not pay for it and we were on our own. the local dealership said they could fix the problem for 500.00 to 700.00 dollars which is unacceptable. gm wants a government bailout at their customer's expense and their equipment malfunction. this is unacceptable! *tr
My 2005 chevrolet impala with the v-6 3800 engine has developed a problem where the speedometer has ceased to work properly. it either does not register any speed at all or it fails to return to zero when the car is stopped. in doing some research online there are numerous postings on edmonds.com regarding this defect. i have not been able to find any recall notices for this defect from general motors. it is my opinion that this defect poses a serious safety concern because motorists like myself are unable to determine accurately the speed at which the vehicle is being operated. this poses a variety of potential dangers to the motorists operating the vehicle with the defective speedometers, other motorists on the roadways, pedestrians, and first responders at traffic accidents. *tr
2005 chevy impala speedometer went out of no where..every repair place in town tells me they know about the problem with all gm cars between 2004-2006 but no recall so it will cost me $700 to get it fixed..also gasket in fuel line missing that's an other $280. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy impala.. for past two weeks my speedometer has been reading incorrectly. i was on the interstate doing 70 mph but it felt more like 50. the problem stopped for a couple of days but yesterday.. it took another turn. i was doing 35mph but the reading showed 0mph. it is now pointing in the up and down position and will not move. i have checked other forums and found that there are many many other impala owners experiencing the same problem. this seems to me to be a factory default. there is a major possibility for serious accidents occurring due to this problem . *tr
I own a 2005 chevrolet impala with approx. 86,000 miles on it. my speedometer is going haywire(not consistent at all) and i am unable to correctly tell my speed. i know there are quite a bit of other gm vehicles with the same issue because there is a blog on the internet about them. i am concerned about this due to the fact that i have a 3 year old son and my wife with me a lot. gm said they will not pay for this problem to be fixed and a lot of people can not afford it($500-$800). i just hope gm will take responsibility and fix this issue at free of charge to the consumer before someone gets injured or even killed. *tr
Gas gauge reads empty when car was just fueled. speedometer at times reads 0 when i'm driving on the freeway. at times the speedometer will read 65 yet i'm zooming past cars so who knows what speed i am going. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact noticed that a security warning indicator would sporadically illuminate on the instrument panel and the vehicle failed to start. she took the vehicle to the dealer, but a diagnostic test was not performed. the technician stated that it would cost approximately $600 to have the security system re-wired. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the failure mileage was 83,000 and current mileage was 86,776.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact noticed that the instrument panel gauges were inoperative and displayed inaccurate readings. in addition, the windshield wipers failed sporadically, the rear passenger tail light was poorly illuminated, and the battery failed spontaneously. when the failures occured, she smelled a burning odor as if the wires were burning. the vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was unknown.
The stepper motors that control dash instruments. speedometer will not reset to 0 mph after coming to a full stop. also, stepper motor controlling fuel gauge. inaccurate fuel available reading and i must rely on trip meter to estimate what fuel is remaining.
2005 chevy impala speedometer improperly working show i am doing 100mph when i am only doing 35. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. sporadically, the speedometer on the instrument control panel becomes inoperative and displays inaccurate readings. as a consequence, the contact cannot accurately measure the speed she is driving. there is also a strong fuel odor emanating from the vehicle. she took the vehicle to a repair shop, but the failure could not be duplicated or remedied. the vehicle has not been properly repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 116,000.
My speedometer is not functioning on my 005 impala and has not for months. it will say you are doing 100 when parked and never comes back down unless you keep restarting then engine to make it "shock drop" back down. the dealer wants $400+ to replace the whole unit. it seems that from just a little research online that this is an ongoing issue with numerous impala's manufactured since '04. *tr
Speedometer on my 2005 chevrolet impala randomly starts dropping speed or showing no speed at all. has happened multiple times but also random, no constant way to make it occur. *tr
Speedometer has ceased to function properly. when car is turned off it's stuck at 80 mph and will peg itself out as the car speeds up. upon research repair will cost 300+ dollars. car has 55,450 miles. this will be repaired upon paycheck being received. *tr
Digital instrument cluster speedometer and fuel level gauge, speedometer goes past 120mph while driving and continues climbing until the engine is shut off, fuel gauge does the same goes past full when less than full. the problem is not constant but occurs mostly in damp or rainy weather. i have found that both can be reset simply by turning the ignition key on and off until which every instrument is acting up goes back to zero. it 's more of a nuisance than any thing. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving between 5-25 mph, the speedometer and the temperature gauges moved up and down. the contact took the vehicle to a personal mechanic and was informed that the failure caused the vehicle to need coolant. he feels that the vehicle is unsafe because the thermostat rises due to the vehicle overheating and the speedometer failing. the current mileage was 68,000 and failure mileage was 64,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the headlights failed 4-5 intermittently for over three months. when the high beam lights were used, the low beams failed. while driving, the contact heard a clicking noise before the lights failed. the low beam lights would illuminate again when he turned the high beam switch. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 62,961. updated 3/19/09 *cn the dealer was not able to duplicate the consumers conern. updated 03/25/09.*jb
