Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2003 Chevrolet Impala

I have a 2003 impala. i went to start my car and it would not start. the battery is not dead. everything inside the car came on and the windows would roll down. but the engine would not turn over. after waiting for about ten minutes it started right up. i have read that there is a problem with the passlock security system in a lot of gm cars. *tr

2003 chevrolet impala security system causing starting failure. car has new battery, starter, and alternator, and has no other defects, other than intermittent failure of the security system, causing failure to start. *tr

Headlights keep going out, have installed 2 parts will last a couple months than will go out again. will go dim than go off. *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet impala w/ day time running lights on car from factory. while driving early 4:00 am in the morning, through the mountains with no streets lights. i put my high beams on. within a second all exterior, and interior lights when out. this is totally unsafe and hazardous. the manufacture should be responsible for this not the consumer. need to have a recall on this. this a malfunction problem that needs to be addressed, before someone gets seriously hurt. i pray that your just not entering these complaints into the data base, but letting the consumer know that you care and are working on this problem. i also, notice that while looking for recall on this matter there's a lot of complaint on this multifunction. consumer's can't fix this without a lot expenses and remove airbags. will you do your best on recalling or getting recalls on this problem. *tr

Rear defogger failure- doesn't work. *tr

My 03 impala some times won't start. i have already got it fixed from dealer and as soon as it ran out of warranty, it started to have the same problem, which was fixed 6 months earlier by the dealer. gm won't help and i am stuck some times, with the car being left about two to three times in shopping malls. need some help from gm. *tr

Do not worry about filling out this form because it is a waste of time. i filled a complaint on march 2010 and still no response, i contacted them and they tell me that the engineer has found no problems with a 2003 chevy impala pass-lock system. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle failed to restart and the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician replaced the ignition switch on two different occasions and replaced the battery. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 133,000.

The ignition switch had a 10 minute delay. when i go to crank the car at time it will not crank . if i wait ten minutes then it will crank. i've had all sensor check replaced the alternator and the starter. i had the ignition switch looked at. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy impala. my car cranks fine in the morning. after being driven after a while; i have to wait for it to cool off before it will crank. i have had to wait up to 2 hours for my car to start. i have taken the car to several machines and they are lost regarding the issue. i called the chevy place and they gave me a list of possible problems and want me to spend 99.99 for a diagnostic test. i told them i was told that it was possible the bcm (body control modular). i have been looking out on consumer pages and there have been response about the bcm being fixed and it only resolved the problem for a short time. spending 99.99 plus a charge of 450.00 to 500.00 to get a temporary fix is way out of the question. i feel this is something that needs to be recalled and fixed asap because this is electrical and can be dangerous to the consumer. i also it should be at a cost to the company due to the fact no one can detect the problem outside the company and it seems that the repair is only a temporary fix and it to expensive for that. *tr

We are dealing with a problem with the ignition switch/ security system on our car at least once a week now. this issue began about six months back and is definitely worsening. we are experiencing wait times of about ten minutes to clear the security system before we can start the car and have been told this will eventually end up completely failing soon. now this problem has caused the instrument cluster lights to fail and we cannot judge speed at night without a flashlight. i judge this a safety issue because this is my wife's car and she often has to depend on the car at nights and alone. *tr

I have 2003 chevy impala and i having problems with the passlock theft system that gm puts in the car. i only had the car year and half, i haven't had any problem up to aug 28 2010. now once every 3 months it wont start. the car for no reason will not start. when it does start it stall out then after other try it start and the security light stays on for 4 to 7days. i haven't fixed it yet reading lot about the chevy dealers haven't fix the problem. *tr

I was driving the car and security light comes on. i stop by my house, but when i get back into the car the car won't start. ten minutes later the car starts with no problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving, the headlights, the door locks, turn signals and anything electrical began to malfunction. occasionally, the vehicle would not start and it would stall. the warning lights and the heat would also stop working. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure. the dealer suggested replacing the computer; however, they do not know if that will fix the problem. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 88000 and the current mileage was 91000.

03 impala that has had the service vehicle soon light come on. was just in for oil change, light is not always on. drive into work, car is flawless. drive home from work, now the light is on and all interior lights flicker and there is a noise in the glove box of a tick tick tick. stop at garage and they cannot diagnose the problem as no codes appear. have to take out the interior fuse when i park so that battery is not drained, shop says i will need to replace the bcm. car handles well, but why am i reading about all of the same thing happening to other gm customers of impala's between 2000-2005? recall? *tr

2003 chevy impala will not start. the dealership states it is a bcm problem. the remote installed on the car fob does not work and has never worked. doors will not lock and the trunk will spring open when traveling down the road. since the doors and trunk do not lock, there is no security on this vehicle. and again the car will not start. i have replaced the battery and alternator and the car still does not start. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that when he turned the vehicle off, he was unable to restart it. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the computer chip did not recognize the key and the pass lock sensor failed. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 98,000 and the current mileage was 113,148.

2003 chevorlet impala will not start due to problem with passlock sensor. this is a problem that continues to happen over and over. the manufacturer seems to be aware of this and refuses to issue a recall. there seems to a liability issue if someone is stranded because of this item and gets killed or raped. *tr

My 2003 impala will occasionally not start. had batter, alt and generator checked all ok. after sitting about 10 minutes car starts fine. seems it's the passlock system and is a known problem to gm. a recall should be made. *tr

Bought a 2003 impala in 2004 and it ran ok for a while. the car now fails to start intermittently and i have to wait 10 minutes or more for the car to start. the dealer states that is a security alarm problem, but they have not been able to fix it. i do not believe they know how to fix this problem. i have learned that there are thousands of gm cars with this problem. *tr

Security light blinking car will not start. had fixed at gm dealership for $559.00 picked it up 3 days ago it just did the same thing tonight. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the engine failed to start. the failure recurred constantly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised that the board module control would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the malfunction persisted. the vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

this car first failed to start in may of 2010. since then, it has repeatedly left us down, and we and mechanics have tried varies fixes. usually the car will start after a ten minute session of having the key turned on, then off for five seconds. most times after that, it does start. however, this is becoming untenable. after checking online, i find that i am one of thousands of people having the same problem. *tr

2003 chevy impala. passlock stystem thinks the car is being stolen, disabling the ignition for up to 30 minutes at a time. sometimes leaving you stranded. also abs and trac control system failure at 100,00 miles. no more abs or trac control as parts are over $3,000. oil spill out of filler neck onto exhaust manifold, and recall only moved spark plug wires, oil problem still exists. interior dash lights dim to complete darkeness, or super birght at all different times. issue is the dimmer switch. piss poor design by gm. they should be banned from selling vehicles until they pull their heads out of their [xxx] . information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car will not start then will start 10 minutes later, or while your riding down the road all the lights interior and exterior will flash on and off. *tr

My 2003 chevrolet impala ls has had this problem for years and everyone else with the impala have the same problem. why is there no recall? the dealerships have been charging people $600 to change the ignitian that doesn't even fix the problem. that is what they charged me 3 years ago. the car will not start once in awhile and you have to wait 15-20 minutes for it to finally start. it started out every other month then every month then twice a month. now in 2010 it happens 2-3 times a week for me. here is one of the many forums about this problem http://64.13.204.178/chevrolet/impala/2002/electrical/passlock_problem_wont_start_and_security_light_is_on.shtml

I have a 2003 chevy impala that has starting problems(no start) . since 2004, there have been at least 4 bcm and pcm modules installed on this car from the gm dealers in which i have all the paperwork for. for the first year, the security light would come on then car wouldn't start for 10-15mins. then the second year car wouldn't start for 30-45mins. take to dealer and they couldn't find any problems. so the third year, after missing alot of time from work, it starting doing the same thing and i had it towed to gm. they had it a week and still found no problems. then the following week the same thing happened and towed again- this time they started throwing parts at it because they didn't have a clue( bill heard in plant city,fl). so after new parts, it ran for about 4-6 months and started doing the same thing. i again took to dealer and no problem found but they decided to put another bcm on it. then it would work for a few weeks and then the security light, traction light, abs light would come on and next time i try to start it then nothing would happen. so this is happening almost every other day now. this car has left me stranded so many times that i am sick of it and i keep putting money out for towing bills and all the gm dealer can tell me is to bring it in and they would look at it again. i have put out alot of money for bcms every year now and no warranty nor my money back for defective parts. i think gm has done a poor job at evaluating these concerns and do not care about the customer. something needs to be done about this issue and a recall needs to be on all of the vehicles with the passlock ii system. *tr

Car will not start. at first it did not happen very often but now it is happening frequently, if i wait for a period of time it will eventually start. i am told it has to do with the security system. *tr

Security light intermittently coming on. vehicle will not start for 10 minutes after initial attempt to drive. transmission kicks terribly when attempting to accelerate. brake light, battery light, and airbag light intermittently flash when braking. alternator and battery check fine at service. all signs point to bcm and gauge cluster. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the engine failed to start. the contact waited ten to fifteen minutes and the engine started as normal. in addition, the anti-theft security warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the failure occurred intermittent. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician stated the failure was contributed to the ignition switch or possibly an electronic chip. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunctions at this time. the failure mileage was 74,000.

2003 chevy impala 4 door. whenever we drive the car at night with the headlights on high beams the go off completely. so when we are driving the speed limit like 65 it becomes very interesting. this happens about one minute after high beams are turned on. this has been happening since we purchase in february 2009. we want a vehicle recall, as there are many complaints on the webb. does anybody have to die before action is taken by the gov or general motors on this problem with the impala. *tr

Vehicle would fail to start however after 10 minutes would start. high beam out indicator will illuminate but at the same time both high beam headlights are stuck on and will not go off. multiple diagnostics no problem found. replaced, bcm ok for a week problem returned. dealership stumped. *tr

(1) nothing appears to lead up to the failure. at least there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. (2) the failure is the car will not start at times. we bought the car used with approx. 26m miles on it. it did not do this for the first couple of years we had it, then it started it. at first we thought it was the battery since the car was about 3 years old at that time. that didn't stop it from doing it. someone where we go to have the oil changed said he knew what to do when it does it which was disconnecting a battery cable. that seemed to work for awhile and then that stopped working. at first when it did it, it would only be approx. 15 minutes before it would start. now it is up to over an hour. (3) the only money we have socked into it has been for a battery. from what i can gather on the internet, this is a very common problem. *tr

I own a 2003 chev. impala, ls and cannot drive with the bright lights on as they only remain on 3-to-5 minutes and go out completely. this is very nerve wracking and dangerous. thus, i no longer use high beam and was told a new switch for $500.00 plus installation was needed. this has occurred since i purchased with warranty left, but thought it was just a once or twice occurrence. *tr

My 2003 chevrolet impala has intermittent starting trouble. sometime it will start fine and other times it wont. the dealership said it most likely the bcm or passlock system. this needs to be a recall. there is ongoing problems with all chevrolet impalas for this issue. stranded with kids all the time. *tr

I own a 2003 chevy. impala and last year the security light was flashing in ma dash,so i pulled over and turned it off when i tried to restart it wouldn't turn on. this incident turned to a major problem, it has made me late to appointments, left my kids and i stranded and it has not gone away. this is very inconvenient and should be taken care of, i don not want to invest more money then what the vehicle is actually worth. *tr

After changing my battery on my car i notice now that my lights flicker on and off. there is also a clicking sound coming from underneath the dash and sometime my car will not start. *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet impala with a 3.8 liter v-6. the car radio quit working and i had to pull out the fuse because it was sending strange error messages to the body control module. now the bcm is having even more problems. the car turned itself of then back on while i was driving down the road. i pulled over and shut the car off. then it would not start again. i pulled the fuse for the bcm an the car started and i made it home. what in the world did general motors do to these cars. i have been reading numerous horror stories about their cars. was there a recall to fix this problem or do i have to go to the dealer and spend a fortune to fix this garbage pretending to be a car. how can a car company get away with this poor quality control in this day and age? my security display now shows random errors like low fuel even after i filled up the tank. not sure if any major damage was done to the car but now the transmission hesitates when it shifts. *tr

I was driving my 2003 chevy impala and tried to signal a lane change and the flashers would not work for either direction. there was not any accident, but the situation was very aggravating. the car also has a history of oil seepage and it has only 70,000 miles on it. we bought the car 4 years ago at a used car dealer, and i change the oil myself every 3000 miles. the car is hard staring at times, and i had put a new battery in it 2 years ago due to the trouble starting. *tr

The security light started flashing on and off, causing my headlights to flash while driving and causing the lights in my dashboard to flash also. it ended up stranding me in a parking lot because the so-called security feature on this car shut the ignition off and would not allow me to start my car. *tr

Purchased a 2003 chevy impala on 4/09 and 3 days later the speedometer did not work. i have notified the dealer which will be corrected; however, i've noticed that numerous other chevy impala owners are experiencing the same problem of a defective speedometer. *tr

2003 chevy impala. "security" warning light on dash, then random wont-start episode. wait 15 minutes and it starts. no confidence that gm dealerships know what's wrong, or will permanently fix it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the vehicle security lamp illuminated and when inserting the key into the ignition, the vehicle would not start. the contact also mentioned that the failure drained the battery, causing the vehicle to loose power. the dealer was contacted who stated that the pass lock key was probably defective and advised her to bring the vehicle in to run a diagnostic test . the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 37,000.

I currently own a 2003 chevy impala with about 77,000 miles on it. a few months ago, the security light would periodically come on and cause the car not to start. after attempting to restart numerous times and playing with the gear shift, after about 10 minutes the car would start and be fine for a couple weeks. during the last inspection, i took it to the dealer and asked him to check it. since the light had not come on for 3 or 4 weeks at that time, he said that it more than likely would not show anything on the diagnostics. he said it could also be an intermittent problem with the starter. they charged me $80 to check the connections to the starter and i still had the problem. they said that more than likely it would be a problem with the computer in the car and would cost a few hundred dollars to fix. after doing more research online, i discovered that this is not a random problem with my vehicle, but a known issue that should have been covered under a recall. i have owned both domestic and foreign cars in the past, and i have never had as many problems with the foreign ones as i do with the domestic. i don't plan on buying another american made car anytime soon. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy impala and at 132,000 my ignition switch lock. i got the switch changed then had to take it to the dealership to get it reprogrammed i am filing this complaint due to i looked online and what did i see the same problem. we as owners of this car need it recalled. my cost as of 3/7/09 to 3/11/09 is 400.00 and counting. *tr

The pass lock security light would come on while driving then it would not allow me to restart the car. this happen at first 2 to 3 times a month at first then the last three of four months it takes place about 3 to for times a day. first the security pass lock would come on then the car dash boards ant every thing else would work but i just could not crack the car. then the pass lock security would make everything the car turn off the car would not make a sound. then it started running my battery down. then it would run down the battery every other day. this is a danger because it has left me stranded late a night and also during the day. i have missed work due to this defect. i hope chevy will do a recall. i see that i am not the only consumer with this problem. even thou no death or accident took place due to this defect this is still a serious matter due to the fact that this problem has cost me wages and rest. i a life threatening emergency this car could cost a life all because i might not be able to get it to start. *tr

I have had numerous problems related to the service traction service, abs, failure starting (pass/lock system), and the security light on for no reason. about 2 years ago i had the abs and traction system worked on for a total of around $250. about 1 month ago my abs and traction caution lights came on and have stayed on to present day. *tr

My 2003 chevy impala security light comes on during driving car will stall or die causing me to have to cross traffic a t coast to get the emergency lane of road which is dangerous. many times when i go to start vehicle it does nothing. after doing some online research i found that this a common issue with these vehicles. this is clearly a manufacture defect. *tr

2003 chevrolet impala recurring problems with the ignition over the last five years. *mw the consumer stated the vehicle would not start. it would take multiple attempts to get the vehicle started, then at times, the vehicle would stop running suddenly. the only explanation seemed to be the key was hit inadvertently going over a bump, knocking it out of the drive position. in january 2009, the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was towed to the repair shop, where the ignition tumbler was bad. a new ignition lock cylinder was installed. february 2009, the engine raced uncontrollably, which required constant braking and placing the vehicle in neutral to stop. in october 2011, the ignition cylinder was replaced again. march 2012, while driving on the highway, there was a major electrical lighting system failure. all of the lights went out. the multi-function switch was replaced. july 2013, the vehicle would start and then stall. september 2014, the consumer received a recall notice, regarding the ignition lock cylinder. *jb

There is a safety issue with 2003 chevy impala due to it will not start at times due to problems with passlock system. this is especially dangerous as i am a female who at many times is alone at night going to and fro from work and school and must sit in my car until it decides to start. there are several consumer complaints on various websites about this issue, however gm will not address this. *tr
