We have classified the 284 complaints from 2008 Chevrolet HHR about STEERING into the following categories.
Electric power steering first started to fail about 12/20/19. it would not allow assisted steering until the vehicle started moving. it worked like this for a few days and then started to fail at random while driving, the worst incident when starting to make a turn at a busy intersection. i barely avoided an accident because it tried to straighten my wheels while i was in the turn. shortly after it failed completely. it now has no power assist. i would here a clicking from under the dash, and when that stopped, my steering returned. now it clicks and there is no further assist. i saw where other gm cars with this system were covered under a recall, including newer models, but when i called them, they stated there were no open recalls on my vehicle. the car is unsafe to drive in this state and needs to be repaired.
The power steering went out as we were dealing with a starter issue. it indicated only once on the dash that there might be something wrong with the power steering. now it's completely gone. the dash doesn't show any information that there could be an issue. it's very hard to take turns. both wide or tight. it takes a lot of strength to get the steering wheel to move. if i drive it, moving from lane to lane is difficult. i now have it back in the shop for the mechanic to check it out and run a diagnostic test on the electrical system.
The power steering is suddenly inoperative. no power steering. it just came on the warning lights one time, power steering, and i can't find a fix. the vehicle was parked in my driveway when it happened.
While driving on the major roadway in 5:00 traffic after work and while stopped to go forward in the car wash the power steering light gave a warning then dis engaged and steering was almost impossible. i read the owners manual and it said to turn the car back on and turn the wheel a couple times then the steering was ok to get me home i am afraid to drive it now ,in checking the website this is a known issue. can you help me please?!
I am having power steering problems. i can be driving down the roadway at any speed between 20-80mph and all of a sudden there will be a message under the speedometer that says 'power steering failure' and i will have lost all of my power steering control. i can pull over to the side of the roadway and turn my engine off and then restart the car and the power steering will work again. this has been occurring for the last 8 months too my car.
Steering wheel does not respond immediately when turning at a slow speed. within the past 8 months, the eps signal came on while driving and went off within a few minutes.
My steering feels threatening with loud sound under dash when turning, and car steering is too loose at times and also jumps alittle while turning.. im looking into what and how i can get it fixed, im told it is probably intermediate steering shaft and i understand many gm vehicles have had this issue. also, my 2 passenger doors wont open from inside or outside, the locks go up and down, but door handles also don't engage all way up when try to pull them, mechanic told me , its the actuators in handles because many people also have complained on this issue as well. so i have no access to back doors, i cant afford a new car. i am a senior on fixed income. is there any help for me to fix my car?
Power steering went out
I was sitting in traffic trying to merge and the power steering light flashed on the dash and i lost my power steering. i got home and shut the car off for a couple of hours and the steering was fine.i drove to the store and as i was pulling into a parking space it happened again, the light on the dash flashed and i lost my power steering. i am very concerned about this because my daughter also drives my vehicle and i do not want this to occur with her.i am questioning if this was part of the life time warranty recall as i have never received any notices.
For the past few months i noticed my power steering, cruise control being cut off and jerking with my car. but up til the beginning of august my car wouldn't start, it would crank but not start. come august 18th my car compllife roy won't start. there was a recall on my vehicle and the previous owner took in the car for the recall but now it's acting up again. multiple time where i loose control of my car and or the car would slow down to the point it felt like i was stopping then it would jerk. i thought the dealership could fix this but they can not, gm, rigth way and etc are not helping. i'm terrified my car won't work and also it'll be dangerous to drive.
Takara recall. while pressing on the break pedal to slow down or stop the entire steering wheel shakes uncontolabley. while driving on bumpy roads feels like the entire front end of the vehicle is going to fall apart. i have taken it into different places and they say everything is fine. next stop is the dealer.
Power steering unexpectedly goes out while driving. when i first turn in car, it is fine and can drive but after about 5 minutes power steering goes out.
I was driving on the highway and the power steering light came on the instrument panel and my steering was hard to turn. it's very hard to steer like if i was driving an older model car with no power steering. not very safe for me and the family
Loss of power steering on highway. nearly run over by logging truck trying to get to the shoulder. restarted car and problem went away for a while. now, the steering loss happens almost every time i drive. this is the same system that gm recalled for 2008-09 hhr's,(14v153000) and extended to the 2008 hhr through gm bulletin #14119. gm is refusing to acknowledge the recall!
Driving on a city street around 40 miles per hour when alarm sounds and i have no power steering. very hard to turn drove home and it did it again today....also tire sensors alarm stating tires are deflated...when they are fine..
Whial driving the power steering assistance turns off/fails and the power steering light showes on dash. when you stop and cut the car off and back on it works again for a wial then fails again.

Electronic power steering suddenly goes out. sometimes in the middle of a turn, an alert sound goes off, the words "power steering" shows on the dash where the odometer was and stiff manual steering suddenly replaces normal steering. that is very dangerous! in the process of trying to get back home, i found that turning off the engine seems to reset the power steering and it is back to normal. then it works fine for quite a while before it happens again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet hhr. while driving 30 mph, the power steering indicator illuminated and went into no power steering mode. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was an electrical issue. the local dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 69,000.

While driving, i would keep constantly losing power steering. i would pull over, turn off vehicle and then restart vehicle to regain power steering. then minutes later the loss of power steering would be experienced again. this is very dangerous at higher speeds and in the middle of higher speed turns.
Loss of power steering while driving under normal driving conditions. receive a 3 chime warning and power steering warning appears on dash board as power steering is lost. happened while turning on local streets.
Steering will lock up and loss of power steering will occur. this has happen while car is in motion or parked and engine turned on. when in motion will pull over and stop engine wait a while and power steering returns, when in parked will turn on engine if power steering is absent will turn off engine wait awhile and power steering will return, this has happen frequently.
The electronic power steering turns off on a constant basis while driving the vehicle and all power steering is lost !
So i purchased a 2008 chevrolet hhr and have constantly had trouble with it! here goes the last one! the esc message showed up in the dic with a message about the power steering! i took the car back to the dealership that i purchased it from. was told that it was my steering angle position sensor and that i would have to replace the entire steering column. i have seen that this is a common problem with these vehicles! chevrolet should be responsible for this and it should be recalled because there is no way that i'm paying $1400 to replace this! i purchased the best extended warranty and was told that this is not covered under them therfore it would be out of pocket! the car is extremely hard to steer while in this stage. so until a recall is made about this i would totally let every one i know to never purchase these vehicles! i will never ever purchase another car from that dealer!
The vehicle lost power steering assist while driving. there was a chime and an indicator light. power assist returned after the car was turned off and restarted. *tr
The mileage is 84475. on several occasions over the past couple of days, our power steering has been randomly shutting off while we are driving on city streets and on country lanes. it started a couple of days ago. if you pull over and shut the car completely off and back on, the power steering may come back for for the rest of the trip or it may just keep shutting off. when i googled the problem, i quickly found multiple links documenting others have had this problem. i found the following video on youtube of another hhr driver showing the problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czf1bfrshua please make this a recall item. it is dangerous when driving at higher speeds on country roads.
While driving at about 55 mph on the highway the dic displays a warning "power steering" and the car became very hard to steer.
Power steering was lost on the exit ramp of the highway. didn't use the car for the rest of the day, the next morning drove for 15 minutes and no loss of power steering... until a couple days later. list power steering while in the middle of downtown traffic. has become increasingly more regular, now happening at least once a day or several. this is a safety issues as you turn a corner or try to lane change and all of a sudden you have to yank the wheel! you have other cheverlot models recalled for this, the 2008 hhr needs to be included in this. not safe.
I was driving and my vehicle lost power steering, this is the second time in a year this has happened. the dealership replaced the motor the first time and now they are refusing to replace the steering column when the recall letter clearly states if all components need to be replaced including the steering column than they shall.
I keep have a problem with my power steering going out and it's getting more frequent as of late. i did see that recalls have been issued for model years surrounding mine and the same year in other vehicles made by chevy. i also see that i am not alone as others are complaining about the same issue. i think chevy needs to look at this vehicle again and consider doing the right thing and recall the 2008 chevy hhr power steering motor as well. this is a dangerous problem and needs to addressed because i have had it go out in the middle of a turn and narrowly missed a tree trying to turn.
Intermittent power steering failures caused by overheating or worn electric power steering assist motor. power steering would fail when mid-turn, at non-highway speeds, causing steering to require much more effort to work. very high risk for mid turn collisions.
a woman lost control of her hhr, crashed and died, very likely provoked by the electrical assited steering controller failure, follow link below: http://www.latarde.com.mx/pierdeelcontrolysematamujerencarretera-227237.html

Steering shaft u joint rusted and broke in drive way
Whenever i am driving, the steering wheel will suddenly lock up for seemingly no reason. i can be go anywhere from 35 mph to 70 mph. it's caused me to nearly get into multiple wrecks. i'm forced to pull over, turn off the car, and turn it back on and then the wheel is perfectly fine after. it happens in the middle of driving. i'm scared to keep driving this car but it's my only way to work every day. i have no choice. my car dealership has said many hhr's have been recalled in the past due to power steering issues. please help me know if my car needs to be recalled and what i need to do to keep safe. this happens nearly every day i drive it, i've only owned the car for about a month now.
When i buhgt this vehicle it was the left side shocked solver was loss unscrewed locky me i found the before anything happened in the hwy then i found unther the vehicle a big bump like this car was in a crash accident i explains the dealer sales man and he toll me to he don't know a bought it then one wheel was more big than the other wheels so i bought another tire i then start search the information on this car with no success even car max is no record of the vehicle i the continued driving the car and i find out this car was a car crash vehicle because i notice driver side was panel fix and for more to know this car is unsafely to drive when you go more that 50" miles in a rain the car easy derail and locky i be have not vehicle in my side it happen to me three time i call the dealership and ask to change me this vehicle is to danger to drive and there respond was sale the car and buy me another one that tell me the unresponsive they are no care if another family buy the car and then they can have a accident and even kill them salfe i toll him i can not sale a vehicle that is unsafe to any one so that's way i reported to you guys to put a stop to this dealer because i notice they have a big junk yard in the back of the dealership and that tell me that they fix junk cars and resales with unsafety esue and they need to be inspected to see they not risk family's out there and i want my money back and my expencess i put to this junk.
While my daughter was driving, power steering failed, dash indicator came on and she was unable to turn the wheel while in the intersection. luckily she was on a quiet street was able to stop the vehicle safely, shut it off, then restart. power steering was resumed after restarting. this could have happened anytime and caused an accident. recalls show on cobalt which has same power steering for this model year, but not on hhr. 2009 and 2010 hhr have recalls as well. this is a major safety concern, why is there not a recall to repair? many, many reports on the internet of same problem.
When i first start my car i can steer and then a pop noise happens and power steering light comes on and fuse360 blows and i have no power steering. it is when stopped and steering doesnt matter which..
