My wipers quit working driving home from work yesterday. it was raining pretty hard! thankfully no one was hurt. upon further inspection the transmission bushing has rusted away completely causing my wipers to quit working altogether
Driving in very heavy rain around 5:30am, so also very dark out. windshield wipers on auto, medium-high speed. going around 30mph and hear a moderately loud "clunk" come from area in front of dashboard and steering wheel. suddenly my wipers no longer worked, and within seconds it was impossible to see out of my windshield. i had to litterally stick my head out of my driver side window and look for a side road/driveway to pull over at, not easy in the dark with heavy rain. turns out the sound came from just under my wiper arms, which became disconnected from the wiper motor, as the linkage arm popped off at one of the plastic bushing ball joints. i was driving on a well-paved city street, with no harsh bumps or pot-holes, linkage arm disconnected just from use of the wipers. thankfully i wasn't going 75mph on a highway or this could have been far worse. i had to sit on the side of the road and wait for a friend to come pick me up, car was left there until that afternoon when it was daylight out and had stopped raining. after inspection, i was able to manually move my wiper arms, my first sign that they were no longer connected to anything. i've tried a couple different plastic bushing replacements, none of which lasted longer than a day before the linkage arm fell off again. i am currently being "forced" into buying a whole new wiper transmission. not pleased, this massive safety issue is costing me money to fix, and not even permanently as a new wiper transmission will likely have the exact same issue. and, the only time this linkage issue will occur and cause a failure, is when i need the use the wiper to actually see.
While driving home in a rain storm, i heard a noise from my wipers and then they stopped working. the motor can be heard running, but the blades do not move. this was extremely dangerous as i was on the highway and could not see. after researching, the linkage has broken off and the wiper blades will not move. i cannot operate the vehicle safely in rain/snow and i live in new england. this created a very dangerous situation as i had both my children in the car as well.
My wife was driving on interstate 40 during a heavy rain when the windshield wipers suddenly stopped working. because of this she was nearly in an accident. we had to have the vehicle towed back to our home as it was unsafe to drive in the current weather conditions.
Second occurance -- both stationary and in motion the windshield wipers either do not move, move very slow and stop mid-windshield. this part was replaced with and oem part just over 1 year ago and is doing the same thing again.
Windshield wiper stopped working while driving on rainy night on the freeway. had to pull off the freeway and wait for rain to stop
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. while driving in a blizzard with the windshield wipers activated, the windshield wipers detached from the vehicle. in addition, the engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to zeigler buick of lincolnwood (located at 6900 mccormick blvd, lincolnwood, il 60712, (847) 674-9000), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the diagnostic and repair fees. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 76,000. the vin was not available.
The airflow from my defroster vents stopped working. the heat and air conditioning still work but the air flows only through the front facing vents. i cannot defrost or defog my front windshield when necessary. i have to keep a towel in the car in case i need to wipe it off. it must be a broken directional switch/damper but it creates a dangerous situation. haven't had time to get it fixed yet.
Mid november 2018, my windshield wipers stopped working. i am a nurse in a cardiac catheterization lab, my pager had gone off, so i actually was driving on my way to the hospital for someone having a heart attack when this happened. it was pouring down rain, i was on a highway bridge with no shoulder, when my windshield wipers just stopped working. they were working when i left my house. the rain was coming down hard, so when my wipers suddenly stopped working, i panicked. i nearly hit a nearby car because i could not see through the downpour. once i got off the bridge, there was a shoulder to pull off to. i turned my car off, got out to see if something had got caught in the wipers, nothing. i restarted my care to see if the wipers would work, they wouldn't. luckily, i have a coworker who lives a little further than me who would be coming down the same route who was able to pick me up to get to the hospital. it was no longer raining when i later that night, was dropped back off at my car. the wipers still did not work. i thought, maybe a fuse or something blew. that didn't seem to actually be the problem after further research and assessment. i replaced the fuse, they still didn't work. i could move the windshield wipers with them off, which seems to suggest that the linkage is broken or the motor is not working.
You have the equinox listed as having zero recalls. that is not correct. i was contacted by mail about a recall for the front wiper transmission assembly (canada only). if some of these canadian parts have made it on to us models then the same failure will happen. from the complaints i just read on this site that has obviously happened. i would feel terrible if someones wipers quit working during a storm and they or their children were hurt or even killed in an accident due to wiper failure and i knew about it. i am uploading photos of the notification i received in the mail in the hopes that gm acknowledges the fact that the wiper failure can and is happening to us models as well.
The wiper transmission bushing failed.... the failed bushing attaches the wiper motor to the transmission. the incident occurred while traveling home from work on a highway ( i-380) ...the wipers stopped working during a winter storm creating poor visibility and a dangerous situation.
While driving at highway speeds on a rainy afternoon, the windshield wiper arms went entirely to the left off the windshield. i pulled over, placed the windshield wipers at the resting position and attempted to get the wipers working again. i could hear the motor running but the wipers would not move from the resting position.
While driving down the highway in a rain storm the driver side windshield wiper suddenly stopped working forcing me to find a safe path off the road and pull over until the storm stopped. upon inspection it seems the ball joint popped off the plastic bushing causing the driver side wiper to not move.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the windshield wipers failed to function properly during inclement weather with no warning and had almost potentially caused a crash which meant that the contact had to drive extremely cautious without the function of the windshield wipers while on a major highway. the emergency blinkers had to be applied when the failure occurred .the dealer autonation chevrolet (highway 6, 8100 s texas 6, houston, tx 77083, (281) 406-3559) was contacted however, the vehicle was unable to be driven to the dealership due to the fact that it was a rainy downpour so the vehicle was parked at the contact's residence. the vin was not available. the dealership and the manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from any recall campaigns and that the warranty had expired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was not available.
Wipers stopped working during rainstorm in construction zone on i-76 westbound east of akron. my wife got in a near accident because she could not see and had to pull off the side of the highway waiting for the rain to stop. went on-line to see this is a constant problem. had to buy the linkage at the dealer and the parts guy said that this part is in stock because it is common to be replaced.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the windshield wipers failed to function properly so the function was not available due to the failure when there was inclement weather. the dealer daniels chevrolet (365 e main st, swainsboro, ga 30401, (478) 268-4052) indicated that the vehicle would need to be diagnosed to repair the vehicle and they also stated that there was no recall to cover the replacement part for the repair which was unacceptable to the contact. the vehicle was not repaired yet. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was not available.
Driving 45 mph down a street in a downpour at night. no streetlights on the road. my wiper arms both stopped moving. immediately lost ability to see the road while traveling at a good speed. was able to veer toward the middle of the road and slow down to 5 mph, where i was then able to see the road again. had to drive 6 miles at 5 mph to get home. took car to dealership next day and droped it off. told them the problem. wiper transmission broke. extended warrentee took care of the replacement. but this car only had 50k miles on it and its not been driven hard. very unnerving to have something break that isn't used so often. seems like a lot of these wiper transmissions break. recall soon??
Driving on a four lane interstate at 65 mph when my wipers just stopped in an upright position.
I was coming home from running errands when it began to rain heavily. all of the sudden, my windshield wipers quit working in the upright position and i had zero visibility. it was one of the scariest moments of my life. i quickly put on my hazard lights and pulled to the side, however, if i had been on the highway or moving and a faster speed i hate to think of what would have happened. after researching the problem online, i am reading countless stories of equinox owners who have had exactly the same situation happen - this is horrible and chevy needs to stand by its product and recall the wiper transmissions on all of the vehicles in question.
While driving in the rain on a 2 lane local road, while the wipers were in use, they stopped working in mid-swipe. i heard a sound when this happened. both wipers were stuck and inoperable in the middle of the windshield. after stopping, i was able to move the wipers to the full down position, but only with some effort. the rear wiper works fine. there is no function at all on the front wipers. the fluid spray is still functioning, but the wipers will not move. i am dismayed to see that chevrolet is very aware of this problem, and has a multi-year recall for this very issue in canada, but only has a recall on model year 2013 in the us. mine is a 2014 with 79,000 miles. even my local auto service shop is familiar with the issue of the rod corroding and breaking, thus rendering the wipers inoperable and leaving drivers in a life-threatening situation, as this problem only occurs as we are using the wipers inclement weather. every driver on the road should be concerned.
15789:windshield wiper motor failure. my windshield wipers stopped working in track while it was raining. it stopped in the up position on high and i could not drive or move because i could not see. turned the ignition off and on and replaced a fuse and the wipers still do not work. this happened after i picked my kids up from school in rush hour traffic. after researching i see that this has happened to lots of people. i called the chevy hotline for bulletin #15789 and was informed that even though this recall is relating to the same issue i am having my car was not included in the recall. this after i just spent over 850 in maintenance on a car that is only 4 years old and just over 50k miles. if its the same issue its an issue and my vehicle needs to be covered.
While driving down the interstate at 70 mph in a heavy rainstorm my windshield whipers just stopped working. they stopped in the upright position. this is very dangerous and luckly i was able to pull over but could not see out the front window because the rain was so hard. looked it up and found this is a common thing and has even been recalled in other places. with 2 kids under the age of 3 in the car with me this was really scary.
I was driving on a four lane highway during a major down pour, suddenly the windshield wipers stopped (standing straight up). it happened on a bridge so i couldn't pullover, couldn't see! i was very fortunate to have got off of road at end of bridge. car only has 48,000 miles. never had problems with lot higher mileage vehicles i have had, this is seriously dangerous, someone with lesser reflex and vision would have had an accident and maybe killed someone or them selves.
My windshield wipers quit working and froze in a slanted upright position during a severe thunderstorm on the toll in central florida on 8-29-18 driving at 60mph. after narrowly avoiding 3 accidents and death because i couldnt see, i navigated to 2 seperate repair shops who pretended to not know of this defect and demanded i pay for "diagnosing" this seriously life threatening known vehicle defect. i believe this part was included in a 2013 recall on the chevy equinox. mine is a 2014 with the same scenario. all consumers should be aware that 2014 models carry this potentially fatal risk. it was an extremly terrifying ordeal to be in. i made a police report after one shop threatened me and refused to release my car for telling me what needed to be fixed and forcing me to pay a diagnostic charge of $117.70 while doing nothing to help the issue. i went to the dealership the warranty company told me to. only later for them to claim no record of the calls i made exists and that this was not covered and it was to be paid for by me because my coverage expired in 2017 admittedly by them without any warning or notifications being made to me. there really should be a recall on any model with this same part id or situation.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 65 mph in the rain, the windshield wipers became completely inoperable. the contact pulled the vehicle over and waited for the rain to stop. the contact drove the vehicle to lima auto mall (2200 north cable road, lima, ohio 45807, (419) 993-6000), but it was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact and the dealer referenced an unknown part as a potential cause of the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 81,000.
I was driving in a heavy rainstorm when my wipers stopped working abruptly. i was driving down a steep winding mountain road when this occurred. i could hear the wiper motor still running so i knew it was not a bad fuse. my husband checked when i got home and he said it looked as if the wiper had come off of the mechanism it was supposed to be attached to. i am taking it to my mechanic tomorrow, as i see there is no recall for this issue yet.
My wife was driving my 2014 equinox during a heavy rain storm when the wipers suddenly stopped. she was on i90 heading back to new york from a conference in massachusetts. she is lucky she did not get in an accident traveling at highways speeds in a heavy down pour. the vehicle was brought home on a flatbed as it continued to rain. once the car was home i removed the wiper transmission cover and found that the ball joint that connects the motor to the transmission fell apart. since i need the car i purchased a replacement wiper transmission from a local auto parts store. i called gm to report the problem and they said it is not covered and that there is no recall...
Driving home from work, in heavy rain and the wipers stopped working. stopped in the up position
I was driving on the highway when the wipers quit with the left wiper right in my line of vision. i tried turning them off and on and had to stop at a gas station because it was pouring rain at the time. i turned off the engine and restarted the wipers with no luck. i had to continue to my destination in pouring rain with no wipers. i was very fortunate to make it without a crash taking place. i had to take the vehicle in for repair of the wipers at champion chevrolet in the amount of $385.45. now i have learned this should have been part of a recall. can you help me with reimbursement? thank you very much.
My windshield wipers quit working during a severe thunderstorm. i navigated to a repair shop. the part replaced was my windshield wiper transmission. the part id is 84241847. this part id was included in a 2013 recall on the chevy equinox. mine is a 2014 with the same part. consumers should be aware that 2014 models also carry this risk. it was a terrifying situation to be in. there should be a recall on any model with this same part id.
While driving on the highway in the rain my wipers suddenly stopped working and remained stuck in the upright position. it was raining very hard at the time and my visibility was significantly impaired. i had to pull onto the shoulder and wait for rain to stop before proceeding to the nearest exit. the wiper motor is running (you can hear it) but wipers do not work. in researching this issue i discovered a recall in canada for this issue in my make and model, however the recall in the usa is only for the 2013 model, my car was built in january 2014 in canada. after speaking to the dealer and chevy they will not cover the repair cost. my 2014 equinox only has 30,000 miles on it, and many other chevy owners are having a similar issue.
The ball bearing on the wipers broke while i was driving in heavy rain. they immediately stopped working and nearly caused me to crash because i couldn't see. there is a recall for 2013 models. mine is a 2014 that i bought in december 2013 brand new from the dealer.
I was driving out of town it started piyring down raib and my wibdshield wiper transmission stopped working!!! i had to pull over because i couldnt see!! this has been an recalll item in prior years and is still dysfunctional in my 2014!!! they want to charge me 300 to fux it i cant afford it! it is still a recall item!!!! i wad in motion on the highway when they stopped working!!! i could've had a bad accident!!!!
I have a 2014 equinox. our wiper transmission failed when we were driving in town at dusk in the rain 2 days ago. i see that this was an issue with the 2013 model year, and there is a recall to address it. i am skeptical that substantial changes were made, and hope you will investigate my concern to see if it's a widespread problem. it's clearly a safety concern, and not an inexpensive fix. of note, although i live in a coastal area so the salt air can cause premature corrosion, i have never had this issue with a previous vehicle.
My windshield wipers stopped working while driving out of town. i could still hear the wiper motor but there was no movement of the wipers themselves. luckily, this occurred as i was pulling into our hotel otherwise it would have been an extremely dangerous situation. this happened on a saturday night 4/14/18. my wife and i were stranded in toronto, ontario for an extra day (we live in michigan) since a dealership wasn't open. on monday (4/16/18) we went to eastside chevrolet in markham, ontario. they indicated that the problem was internal failure of wiper transmission. they replaced the wiper transmission and i had to pay $560.99 (canadian), approximately $447 us dollars. i understand that there is a safety recall for the 2013 equinox but not for 2014. however, the recall for canada goes thru 2017. the rationale for the extended canadian recall appears to be due to the climate yet the climate in michigan is very similar to ontario, canada.
Was driving home from work in a terrible rain storm and the wipers just quit working while i was driving home from work. this happened less than a block from pulling out of the driveway from the work parking lot. very scary incident. had to replace the entire motor for the windshield. it appears that the 2013 models had a recall; whereas, the 2014 models have not had a recall. the 2014 models use the same parts as the 2013 models. not sure why there is no recall on the 2014 model. cost to replace was ~$400+.
Bought the car in april 2017 63000 miles, windshield whipers motor went out feb 2018. i was driving in the rain and they stopped while driving the highway. had to pull over and wait till it stopped. went to the dealer ship service center was informed the motor went out.
The first time, my vehicle was stationary when i tried to operate my wipers and they did not work. i had the entire wiper transmission replaced and within 5 months, they stopped working again, mid wipe, driving down a city street, in the rain.
I was driving down a highway in the pouring rain. all of a sudden my wipers stopped working and put me in a very bad situation. luckily i was able to get off the road and into a parking lot. i began checking the fuses to see if it was that. after confirming they were fine, i began looking up the issue online. i have found that there was a recall for the 2013 model for the wiper transmission. i also found that several people have had the same issue with the 2014 model. sure enough, when i got the car to the shop, they confirmed the issue. $240 dollars to fix the issue that several other owners have had. i feel this issue needs to be looked into before somebody gets hurt.
On10/09/2017 as i was driving on route 3 heading to cape girardeau missouri on a very raining day well my wipers in the front broke and i was unable to continue to drive so i had to hurry up and and pull off the road. so i had to replace wipers bushing. that was a very dangerous experience for me and the dealership stated the recall on them stopped on the 2013's
Ball joints on the wiper mechanism corroded and broke, making the wipers inoperable during a monsoon on the interstate traveling at 70 miles an hour which was very dangerous at night. but the gm corporation will not recall it but they recalled 3680000 equinoxes with the exact same problem from the year before. but not mine thanks gm for nothing!! i wonder if ford or dodge will back up thier product ???
Windshield wipers stopped working on 3 year old car in the middle of a terrible down pour during rush hour traffic while in motion. ability to see was immediately impossible and an extremely unsafe move to the shoulder of 3 way traffic took place. a new windshield wiper motor and transmission kit was required. a quick google search indicates this is an ongoing problem with the 2014 equinox.
Wipers failed as in the 2013 equinox's recall. i was traveling in traffic on us 85 south in heavy rainfall. only by slowing down and carefully moving to the right hand lane where i could see the white line, was i able to keep control and not be in an accident. had i not been an experienced driver, it could have been a multi car incident.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. without warning, the windshield wipers failed to function. the vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the wiper transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer and the dealer indicated that the oem part was the same as the oem part concerning a manufacturer recall for which the vehicle was excluded. the contact was uncertain if the vehicle would be repaired by the dealer (ourisman chevrolet of marlow heights, 4400 branch ave, marlow heights, md 20748, (240) 455-3386) or an independent mechanic. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
The wipers failed, stopped wiping in the middle of a heavy rain storm while driving on the expressway. thankfully able to slow down enough to pull off to the side, very scary! called dealer and was informed that my warranty expired in january of 2017. in researching the repair i discovered that equinox 2013 and i think other years had a recall for the exact failure on my vehicle. the repair mechanic call gm verified the recall on 2013's, the failure on my vehicle 2014 and gm unwillingness to pay for this vehicle repair. the unbelievable irony of this safety issue is that when the repair part arrived it clearly stated "recall" on the label. it was like giving me the middle finger along with the bill. gm should add 2014 and any other vehicles using this component to their wiper recall due to safety concerns before someone gets seriously injured.
While driving on the highway, the windshield wipers stopped working while it was pouring. when the drivers side wiper stopped it was completely off the windshield and the passenger wiper was in front of the drivers side. this caused very poor visibility and was very dangerous. i had to go across multiple lanes to pull over.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. while driving 40 mph in the rain, the windshield wipers failed without warning. the contact's husband diagnosed that the wiper transmission linkage failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v582000 (visibility). the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. while driving the vehicle, the windshield wipers failed to operate. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 116,544.
Purchased our 2014 chevy equinox in october 2013. in november 2016 while my teenage daughter was driving during a rain storm the front windshield wipers stopped working. she had to quickly pull over to the side of the road since she had no visibility at the time. she sat in the car in a dangerous spot until i could get there and drive her home. we left the car until it stopped raining and then went back to get the car. i understand that this is a known issue with the chevy equinox 2013 model. i took my car to the dealership where i bought it and they said the wiper transmission had failed due to corrosion. they replaced the part for me at a cost of $473 dollars.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 chevrolet equinox. while driving in heavy rain, the windshield wiper blades failed to operate. the contact stated that this was the second time the wipers failed in six months. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with an inoperable wiper transmission that needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and filed case number: 8-2937851979. the failure mileage was 44,165.
