Problems with 2011 Chevrolet Equinox FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 121 671 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Rattle and noise in the front passenger side of vehicle as soon as vehicle is turned on and while in motion, making weird noises and movements while driving, occasional hard shift, back rear drivers tire losing pressure for no reason, pulling code for p0420, did a google search and seen multiple complaints for the same issues on the same year, make, and model but no recall on my vin or history of recall, while others said dealers had said it was due to a recall. just bought from baxter dealership in bellevue, ne two weeks ago.

Fuel pump/ low fuel issues fuel pump failing, which in part leaks fuel into the engine. running error codes. low engine power light displayed on dash followed by reduce power. dealership advises it's a 900 charge. certain 2011 equinox models fall under the product emission recall 43180 high pressure fuel recall. however i am being advised mine does not although issue appears to be consistent with recall at first glance.

Most recently was driving in heavy rain and the windshield wipers just stopped working in the upright position, and visibility was extremely impaired. had my granddaughter with me, they had to roll down windows to help me get safely off the road. this vehicle has had problems with the fuel system in 2015, air conditioner quit working in 2014, failed oil consumption test in 2016. i bough a new car because in didn't want mechanical problems and this vehicle has had nothing but problem after problem. it is a lemon.

My husband, newborn baby and i were driving on the highway when the vehicle suddenly slowed and then stalled in the middle of traffic. this occured every time my husband used the brakes. luckily we managed to make it back home safely. the vehichle constantly needs oil and then it died for the last time about a month ago as we pulled into a family members driveway.

Shortly after i financed the vehicle it started having issues while idling, if i idle too long it will start to shake and will shut down. i have poured money into fixing the vehicle and spent the last two 3 years trying to fix the original issue of it shutting down. i will lose throttle in the gas pedal and it will just turn off out of nowhere while i'm driving away from my home. it seems to not like when i idle or drive slow when i'm on the freeway i have to make sure i'm driving fast the gas pedal keeps throttle if i drive too slow it's a risk for it to starting to shake and shut down again. while trying to find the cause of the problem mechanics have found parts that were years past due of needing replacing. so while they thought that that was the cause of the problem and it looked possible with a condition it was in every time we would think that we have solved the problem until the next day when i try to drive my vehicle and it does the same thing. i have been through five mechanics trying to solve this issue and it is becoming a nightmare not even the dealership could figure it out.

Driving home i was approaching intersection in which a few cars were beginning to move as i approached the red light. on a county highway, upon seeing the slow start, i began breaking. unfortunately i continually pushed brake pedal to floor numerous times with no ability to stop and ran my vehicle under back end of a fedex delivery truck. one head on collision occurred my airbag canisters initiated but but the air bags never deployed after impact i did receive indicator notification stating airbag service required. prior to the collision o have had total rebuild of motor from block upward by gmc i reported that numerous times while on hwy my card would suddenly stall/ lag . going from 65-70mph down to 20-30mph. have had engine maintained well and changing oil etc was told all 3 times i took it is it resulted nothing that could be replicated. despite having been lucky since it common apparantly for my vehichle to begin loses oil and has to be refilled q-2 x week ly.( seems to be common complaint from automotive men to state all is good. 1) it is not all good. 2) i could have been killed or seriously injured because of stalling, failed breaking system and lack of air bag.deployment.i also took several times for timing belt repair and even had motor rebuilt and also despite just having put on when this started 3 monthseago, have had issues since 4 mo after buying vehicle ( had 20,000 miles on it . of course am always told not in warranty time limit or my vin # not included in cars identified of increased risk and always told there is an inability to replicate complaints. well now i have a totalled car but praise be to god he still writing my story and i am unharmed and will need new vehichle

My vehicle randomly dies while driving. at 94500 ck engine light came on. had one solenoid replaced and changed the oil. a week later the engine stalled a few times in a parking lot. no check engine light was on. replaced a 2nd solenoid. 3/5/19, a week little over a week it stalled 5 times in a parking lot. pd again to have mechanic scan it nothing showed up. 3/7/19 changed the spark plugs. 3/9/19 drove to milwaukee. got there check engine light came on,stabil trek light & engine power reduced notification. an hour later seemed fine. on the way home all the same lights came on in rolling traffic had to pull off bc it died a couple of times. let it sit a bit then started home again. after about 5 miles going 60mph on the interstate in a snow/rain storm the vehicle died, while driving it. i barely got it to the shoulder of the interstate. a state trooper had to sit behind for safety. bc of the storm the tow truck was 90 minutes out. this was a life threatening situation. i could have been hit & killed.hauled to a mechanic 50 miles away. code reader (attached) showed 5 errors but couldn't find anything wrong that caused the problem. took it to a certified gm dealership. the mechanic couldn't replicate the issue so doesn't know what it wrong. had the timing chain replaced but mechanic didn't think that was the issue. i am afraid to drive it because it could randomly die again in heavier traffic on the interstate and to me is life threatening. there are so so many people commenting online with the same problem that this vehicle should be recalled before people do die if it hasn't happened already. i have only owned this vehicle 5 months and have had it to the mechanic at least 5 times. i don't want to unload this death trap on someone else but i am afraid to drive it for fear of losing my life or someone else's.

I have had my suv worked on 6 different times due stalling, loosing power, cutting out,and not wanting to accelerate . they replaced the throttle body updated the computer replaced air filter, etc. worked for 2 weeks and now is still having this problem.

When the can starts it sounds like a diesel.some thimes the enison will turn over and over and i have to turn it off the try to start it than it will start.the car will die in the midel of the highway. some thime i have to pump the gas to get it going like it just ran out of fule.

Driving down the highway going about 70 miles per hour over a bridge. my vehicle started loosing power. about 2 miles after the bridge the engine light came on and the engine shut off. never came back on.i was towed to a shop where the diagnosis was engine code p228d, previous to that in january of this year another engine code p0302 was captured and in july of this year yet another engine code p0420 captured as well, via a tracking system thru my insurance.

My car has a rough idle/feels like it's going to stall when it's idling. after getting a low-engine power indicator light, i took it to my dealer, who diagnosed the rear high-pressure fuel pump as a result of the code during diagnostics. at a cost of more than $1,300, the fuel pump was replaced, and as i was driving home from the dealership, the problem persisted and i called the dealer right then. i was told to let the car reset and do highway driving. after five days and a 12-hour highway round trip, i still had the problem and called the dealer back. they had my car three days and now say this is a timing chain issue, but they also say that some of my models are having high oil consumption, leading to the timing chain issue; therefore, they're tracking my oil consumption for 2,000 miles. still, my question is why replace the high-pressure fuel pump since that didn't fix the problem? my year, make, and model--but not vin--is currently under recall for failing high-pressure fuel pumps, but my dealer won't budge and include it in the recall. the recall is: #43180: product emission recall ' high pressure fuel pump ' (sep 30, 2016). i also contacted gm's help line, and they investigated and did nothing. i can provide more information if necessary, but i'm requesting that the recall be expanded to include my vin.

My 2011 chevy equinox has had a lot of problems, i got the car with 49,000 miles about 3 years ago. i had to replace the timing chain already due to excessive oil consumption. now my catalytic converter is bad due to oil consumption. my car now has around 130,000 miles and i seen there is a class action suit for the 2011 chevy equinox for excessive oil consumption. it also poses a safety risk as it can cause engine failure while the cars are in motion. there are times i add a whole quart of oil and 3 days later i hear a ticking noise and my oil is completely gone. my car conks out at stop signs once in a while, it takes time to accelerate. also my passenger side seat belt does not work it's stuck to the point where you can't use it.

Gas order and others coming from the engine. gas mileage has decreased. undetected gas leak .

I have a 2011 chevy equinox with high oil consumption issues i been maintaining to avoid engine issues. chevy will check however wants me to pay for oil change test and said they will charge me if they feel the engine has issues due to poor maintenance. the high oil consumption is causing this and appears as a way to turn customers away to avoid costs to them. poor customer service.

Excessive engine oil consumption, engine makes noise, need to change oil every 2000 miles, need to check oil level every week. not safe to drive.

Used quart of oil every 900 miles

Rattles when starting the vehicle. smells of gasoline from vehicle when running. this began in december 2017 and continues to this day

This car has had many problems & recalls by gm. in 2017 i have replaced the high pressure fuel pump x 2, catalytic converter, transmission, svc traction, abs stability track, serpentine belt tensioner, strut mounts, lower control arm bushings, l & r rear trail arm bushings, throttle body. the car is burning oil excessively and i am keeping records of this as there is a recall/lawsuit pending on this issue currently. i purchased an extended warranty so much of these items were repaired under that except labor and taxes which still is excessive amount of repairs and money i spent on a 6 year old car. i called gm customer care and they couldn't care less. i am very disappointed.

3 complaints contained within - complaint #1 - i have had multiple issues with cam shaft actuators and exhaust issues in this vehicle. this has caused my vehicle to stall in busy intersections and to also go into "limp" mode on the interstate. going 70mph and the engine going into limp mode is dangerous. thankfully there were alert driver around me that were able to help me get to the emergency lanes safely. there were recalls for this vehilce for some of these issues - but conveniently - my vehicle was not recalled. three different gm/chevrolet dealerships have worked on my vehicle and have contacted gm on my behalf - but gm has covered no fixes and i have been out over $2000 on these fixes that were covered under recalls - but not on my vehicle. 2nd complaint - i now have fuel pump issues. again, a recall was issued in july 2016 for fuel pump issues. the recall is for the same year, make and engine as mine....but my vehicle is not covered under recall.....even my vehicle will stall out while idling at intersections and again - safety issue. i have children and do not feel safe with this happening. gm seems to not be concerned. 3rd issue - takata recall - my air bag alert light will come on - but i have not received a recall for this issue - yet again - my vehicle seems to not be on the list. safety issue - yes. i have had an open case number with gm corporate for at least 3 years - but suggestions always seem to be on my dime....not theirs. at this point - my vehicle is a "lemon" in my eyes...and if me or my family get injured because of these issues...well.....

#43180: voluntary product emission recall ' high pressure fuel pump ' (sep 30, 2016) car stalls after idling when pulling out of parking lot or in a slow start up or transitioning from reverse to drive. causing the vehicle to lose power and maneuverability. the engine mounted high pressure fuel pump in these vehicles may develop excessive wear on the plunger piston shaft and shaft seal. if this happens fuel can leak into the engine oil crankcase and result in the engine running rough and illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp. the issue has been ongoing for past several years.

Catalytic converter is bad and there is knocking in the fuel system

Lately every time i have been turning on my vehicle and going in drive or reverse it stalls on me and i bought my car the end of may 2017 and its only august 2017 from a certified chevy dealership.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact could not start the vehicle and the engine indicator was illuminated. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle felt as if it were reversing when the vehicle was engaged in drive. the vehicle was taken to jim browne chevrolet tampa bay (11300 n florida ave, tampa, fl 33612, (888) 366-5458) where the contact was informed that the fuel was burnt out and the circuit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,253.

This morning (04/20/2017), while driving, the car stalled out every time i came to a complete stop at a traffic light, or when i slowed down to turn, the engine had a very rough feel with lots of vibration and then stalled.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power and the check engine indicator illuminated the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump had to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 76,000. updated 05/19/17*lj *cn

Engine stalls while slowing or after coming to a stop. restarts once placed into neutral.

Check engine light staying on. diagnosed as cam and crank sensors bad. these repaired now another diagnostic saying timing belt bad. had an oil and filter change dive in febr 13 n went out of town on 2/14/17 n everything fine. engine e light came on end of febr so til back to where got oil changed. they denied any wrongdoing doing. took to mechanic tuesday march 7 told cam n crank sensors bad. they fixed , j came to get car, pulled out of shop n light came on again n engine stalled so took right back. now diagnosed again as timing belt from diagnostic place. called gm dealer n now they want another diagnostic done. i'm confused, frustrated n out of money.

This special coverage, bulletin #14882 is exactly what's going on with my vehicle and i am under the 10-year, 120k time frame. yet apparently my vin doesn't match up so i don't get coverage. https://gm.oemdtc.com/1899/special-coverage-adjustment-plugged-pcv-orifice-in-intake-manifold-2010-2014-buick-chevrolet-gmc i was sold this vehicle in august of 2016. i complained about excessive oil use via email and my complaint was never addressed. bulletin 12585c was released between january and march of 2016, so jeff belzer chevrolet of lakeville, mn sold me this vehicle with the piston issue instead of covering them. now that i've learned about special coverages, i am outside of the time frame for coverage and i feel slighted and cheated. this is a faulty design and instead of chevrolet holding a semi-decent standard, i am left with the bill. https://gm.oemdtc.com/3953/excessive-engine-oil-consumption-2011-chevrolet-equinox-gmc-terrain

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that shortly after refueling the vehicle, the service engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that the fuel pump assembly fractured prematurely causing a failure. the dealer diagnosed that the fuel pump assembly needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000. updated 1/20/16 ln *cn

In february 2015 the throttle body was replaced/repaired due to reduced engine power and stalling while driving. although no longer under warranty, chevrolet picked up the repair cost. since the repair, there has been hesitation in acceleration. more recently there has been loud engine noise (sounds lile a diesel engine), rough idling at a stop & hesitation when turning off the vehicle. it sounds and feels like the engine is going to fall out. the check engine light has come on 2x. i will be scheduling service.

Driving at 55mph suddenly car decelerates and warning light flashes "engine power reduced"...cannot accelerate past 15 mph. service at chevy dealer diagnosis - throttle body needs replacement... concerned to have this sudden problem at highway cruising speeds. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and the engine light illuminated. the vehicle was coasted off of the road and shook constantly. the failure recurred on multiple occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the timing chain, fuel pump, and engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Initially the issue started with rough idling of the car, engine ticking, and engine stalling. after indicating this to the dealership, they informed me that the ecm needed to be reprogrammed because the oil life indicator was not properly calibrated causing the system to think that there was more life on the oil than there actually was. the engine balance chain eventually broke while on the interstate (55 mph), due to improper oil lubrication. the fuel pump, water pump, and a few other items had to be replaced due to the damage caused when the chain broke. i notified the dealership once again after engine ticking/ rough idling re-occured and they indicated to me that the engine ticking during startup was normal. the engine ticking progressed to becoming a constant noise. i noticed that when i took the oil in for an oil change, approximately 2000 miles in, that the oil dipstick would come up completely dry. this indicated the vehicle was experiencing an excessive amount of oil consumption. i took the vehicle to the dealership who indicated that pistons had to be replaced and the exhaust manifold was cracked. this indicated that the engine was observing some excessive amount of heat most likely due to the oil consumption issue. during these issues, no service engine light ever came on. the car had to be taken back to the dealership after the service engine light came on which indicated that the cam shaft actuator solenoids and catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the catalytic converter most likely failed due oil seeping into the exhaust which coated the ceramic substrate & the excessive heat experienced by the engine (as indicated by the cracked manifold) damaged the ceramic substrate. oil consumption leads to excessive heat from the engine which can be a fire hazard. engine stalling due to oil consumption leads to crash safety issues.

My wife purchased a 2011 chevy equinox with a window sticker stating a four cylinder engine. it had 1800 miles on the vehicle when purchased. we took the vehicle in to have the oil changed and found it has a six cylinder engine. how is this possible and who should i speak with at gm. i'm very concerned because of the terrible gas mileage and a six cyl engine was not shown on the paper work? *tr

Upon leaving the home driveway, as the car began to accelerate, the "check engine" light came on, and the information station flashed the warning "stabilitrac / power reduced". the car was still drive-able, but would not accelerate past the first transmission gear. after getting the vehicle back home, i restarted it, and the same warning was displayed in the information station. the vehicle also began to idle very roughly and emit thick black smoke. all indications from internet sources point to a bad throttle body, which was later confirmed by the car dealership. according to the massive amount of complaints about this part, it has a very high failure rate in this vehicle. however, chevy refuses to cover this part as part of their power-train warranty. the "power reduced" condition caused by this part failure is a very dangerous thing to have happen to you if you are turning in a busy intersection or on an interstate highway, and if something is not done, there will be injuries or fatalities because of it. *tr

This vehicle has never gotten anywhere near the advertised epa estimated gas mileage. i have over 20000 miles on it now and have only averaged around 23 mpg on the highway in eco mode. this really should be considered false advertising. i bought the vehicle mainly because of the estimated 30 mpg. really disappointed in gm at this point. *tr

Sensors for the throttle control went out causing reduced engine power in sub zero weather at a stop. this made for hazardous driving in rush hour traffic as it was difficult to get the car above 15 mi per hr especially up any slight incline when the normal speed limit was 45 and every one is annoyed they are being slowed down. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the engine stalled without warning while driving at various speeds. the contact was able coast onto the shoulder and restart the engine. the engine exhibited a loud, abnormal noise at start-up. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the contact was advised that the fuel pump, timing chain, actuator and engine oil was contaminated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 38,400.

I have had many problems with my 2011 chevy equinox that started occurring about a year after i purchased it. the main concerns are the engine noise and how rough it runs, feeling as though i am being rear-ended in traffic (when moving forward from a complete stop it lurches forward, giving the feeling of being hit), rough start up (sounds like an old car at times) and the car stutters when accelerating (almost feels like it wants to stall out). i do not feel safe in this car now and have read that many others are experiencing the same issues. i have taken it four times giving them the same description each time at which they state that they cannot replicate these issues. they keep my car for hours and do nothing to it. i am a single mom so i can't leave my car without it causing major issues for me as i have to take my son to and from school. i received a letter from gm stating that there is an issue with the fuel pump and engine balance chain and describes what my vehicle is doing now-i believe i have engine damage and i am worried that i will end up breaking down on the side of the road at some point or worse stall out and end up in an accident! in addition to the engine problems there is a problem with the defroster, it just doesn't clear the windows fast enough, on going problems with the stereo (makes a static, distorted sound with the usb port) and the drivers side squeaks because it rubs up against the middle console. it is very frustrating because the problems are intermittent. i am hoping that enough people complain about this safety issues with regard to the engine and cause gm to deal with it appropriately! we should not feel afraid that our new car will break down on us, especially with our children in the vehicles! *tr

When vehicle was pulled into our garage, a strong smell of gas was noticed. still under warranty the fuel line was replaced by our dealer. the vehicle mileage was 18700 miles. we bought the vehicle in february of 2011. the vehicle gets parked in our garage every night. we are concerned that a vehicle with so little mileage and at so young an age could have such a serious corrosion problem. *tr

Engine continue to run 3 - 5 seconds after the ignition was turned off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that there was a sever rattling heard from the vehicle as soon as it was started. the vehicle was hesitant to acceleration and the contact stated that it was consuming far more gasoline fuel than normal the failures recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis however the failure could not be replicated. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was 30,000.

Traveling 70 mph down freeway when suddenly my cel illuminated along with the traction control and anti skid lights. after carefully dodging a few vehicles, i pulled to side of freeway in heavy traffic and turned off my engine for a couple minutes. restarted and engine appeared to run fine however the cel remained illuminated. i took the vehicle to a local gm dealer and they indicated a new throttle body was needed to remedy my situation to the tune of $340.00. the money part doesn't bother near as much as having to get to the shoulder in heavy 70 mph traffic. this imposed a very severe safety hazard to not only myself, but all occupants in my vehicle at the time.
