The engine is a 2.4l ecotec engine which i've had to have the exhaust manifold repaired twice in basically two years but if you look on-line, this is a very common occurrence with this engine model. it starts off as a check engine fault code, related to exhaust or crankshaft position sensor but the issue tends to be a cracked exhaust manifold. while researching the issue on-line, i see numerous instances of this ecotec 2.4l engine having this issue-and on different gm models of cars.
Pcv system freezes causing the low power mode (limp mode) and check engine light to come on. its a known issue, and gm covered it on a few cars. next time i may be in heavy traffic.
Windshield wiper motor link breaks whenever i use my wipers and then i need to replace. has happened multiple times. excessive oil consumption. oil is empty after no more then 2000 miles. need to add 4 quarts to refill. no leaks.

I brought the car in for excessive oil consumption it now needs a motor i just got it 7 months ago from dealer. no warranty. engine seized
Driving down the highway going about 70 miles per hour over a bridge. my vehicle started loosing power. about 2 miles after the bridge the engine light came on and the engine shut off. never came back on.i was towed to a shop where the diagnosis was engine code p228d, previous to that in january of this year another engine code p0302 was captured and in july of this year yet another engine code p0420 captured as well, via a tracking system thru my insurance.
The chevy customer care rep stated that there is a "special coverage 15285 is tied to your vin, which may or may not be related to the oil consumption concerns you've described. " my vehicle is experiencing significant oil consumption issues and plenty of noise from the engine. i never received any information about this issue despite having a registered mychevrolet account and a history of contact with chevy. my mechanic mentioned a known issue with oil consumption and suggested i look into it which brought me to this point. after contacting chevy, they suggested i pay to get a diagnostic but that i would not be covered for any services despite the known issue and that i never received notification of the issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while the contact was driving in inclement weather, the windshield wiper motor fractured. the contact was able to replace the windshield wiper motor. the contact also stated that at 80,000 miles, the timing chain fractured and caused major damage to the engine. the vehicle was repaired by bill fox chevrolet (located at 725 s rochester rd, rochester hills, mi 48307, (248) 266-0563). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
This is a safety complaint. i carry my grand kids and am worried for our safety. it has not happened due to the very low mileage and am trying to be proactive. i know of many many happenings. the cars starting at ~ 5000 miles will stall out at signals & on the road. this will probably happen to me when i reach 5k miles.the car has a defective engine that gm cannot fix. i'm afraid of a rear end collision and fire. the car needs a new engine. thank you for reading this and hope it gets rectified asap. I was driving my 2011 chevy equinox i just purchased aug 5,2018 while driving the engine light came on i went to turn in the parking lot at the vehicle just completely shut down i had try coasting into a space. vehicle was towed to a service center only to learn this is a known issue with g mm c/chevrolet. unfortunately gmc is turning a deaf ear to this very dangerous situation. i had just gotten off a major interstate i could have been killed and gma is clearly aware of this problem and refusing to do a recall i'm praying noone gets killed before their hand is forced to make their product safe for the consumer.
I've had this vehicle for 10 months and it's been in the shop more than anything. it's already on its second engine and that was september 14th, now october 23rd it is now needing a transmission. this doesn't include the unbelievable amount of oil changes and tune ups. i've stalled in reverse and drive. the car died out while driving and is extremely loud at times. all i have for documents are my receipts. i'm disabled with children and when i thought we were buying a car we bought a lot of problems instead. constantly trying to still find rides to dr appts and such. i'm very disappointed that a recall hasn't been done yet, after the all the complaints on said vehicle.
While driving car trembled a little a minute or so before it seemingly lost power, no accelerstion, steering wheel locked. lights remained on dash but no power. no warning lights. nothing. thankfully was able to safely stop near side of the road and turned thebkey and car started like nothing happened. thankful i was exiting a parking lot, and wasnt on the highway like i was just a few hours prior. i couldve been killed
I was traveling on the service road when my car suddenly stalled without notice. i was almost hit by vehicles traveling behind me. the car started up right away and i was able to park safely. the check engine light is now on and it shows a code for a bad solenoid. this is a prominent problem with this car, i have seen numerous people complain on various websites about this issue. i just want to know why this car is still out on the road. it is unsafe. it will kill someone eventually. i am now scared to drive this vehicle and will trade this vehicle in.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled. no warning indicators illuminated and a strong odor of fuel was present inside the cabin. the contact started the vehicle normally after approximately 2 minutes. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a failure could not determined. the vehicle was then taken to the dealer ferman chevrolet 'tampa (9751 e. adamo drive, tampa, fl 33619) where the failure was diagnosed as a fractured timing chain and the engine had to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and case number: 8-4527816728 was opened. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
While driving and i come to a stop, , the engine will turn off by itself and i am not able to accelerate. i have to turn turn off the car and restart it in order for it to run again. there was no warning that the car had turned off. i had this problem about 7 months ago, and brought it to the dealership service center. they replaced both intake and exhaust cam solenoid and also the excess oil consumption recall on the car. the car was running fine until now, started to have the same issue again.
My timing chain was making noise. since other models of the equinox have a bulletin that covers that repair i drove it into the dealership. on the way there my engine exploded while driving up a hill at 40mph, cracking the engine block and exhaust manifold. engine needs replacement. gm will not cover the repair. issue was reported to gm. it is at the dealership for repair, working off an estimate. i will add the final invoice later.
Going down the road the ac started blowing hot air so we have no air in this suv not fair and it started to jerk like it was losing power scary
Vehicle has been meticulously maintained. engine started to stall while driving, then would not start. warning lights did not appear until after the vehicle would not start. said engine underpowered. had it towed to mechanic, who found there was no oil in the engine, even though no lights came on and we checked the oil 3 days earlier. had the car towed to the dealer. the dealer said the engine needed to be replaced, but repairs should be covered under a special coverage warranty issued by gm. gm denied coverage with no explanation sent to me. i called customer service to file an appeal, and was given a file number and told someone would contact me within 2 business days. despite almost daily follow up calls by me for a month no one has called me back. each time i am told it the case is being handled by a senior advisor and that the operator was not able to contact them and they would call me back. i asked for the case to be escalated to a supervisor, and after 4 times was told it had been, but when i called back to see why no one had called me back was told that the senior advisor was still assigned to the case. this is a very serious safety issue, with the engine stalling while still in motion, with no warning, and is caused by a known manufacturer's defect and should be part of a recall, not "special coverage".
The automatic transmission went out at less than 100000 miles
My 2011 chevy equinox has had a lot of problems, i got the car with 49,000 miles about 3 years ago. i had to replace the timing chain already due to excessive oil consumption. now my catalytic converter is bad due to oil consumption. my car now has around 130,000 miles and i seen there is a class action suit for the 2011 chevy equinox for excessive oil consumption. it also poses a safety risk as it can cause engine failure while the cars are in motion. there are times i add a whole quart of oil and 3 days later i hear a ticking noise and my oil is completely gone. my car conks out at stop signs once in a while, it takes time to accelerate. also my passenger side seat belt does not work it's stuck to the point where you can't use it.
Excessive oil consumption ... vehicle has 88,000 miles on it. local dealership and gmc won't fix. they say bulletin for repairs is expired. we did not receive notice gmc would repair and we've had vehicle in for oil changes three times in the last twelve months.
Today i added my name to the class action lawsuit, case no. 3:17-cv-5337 that was filed on 9/14/17 in the northern district of california against gm regarding my 2011 chevrolet equinox. if you're affected, add your name as well as file a complaint with the federal trade commission. feb2017, i purchased said auto with 69,684 miles in good condition. on my way to work while at a red light the suv shut off without warning. being unable to restart the suv, it was towed on may 25, 2018 to my mechanic (cb island, 589 union ave, westbury, ny) to find that there were damaged valves, a broken timing chain, and a blown engine at 93,675 miles. this mileage is well under gm's special coverage adjustment mileage of 120k. the cause of the damage to the motor was lack of oil in the engine. being diligent in getting oil changes, there was no indication that the oil was low in the car. gm refused to honor the warranty though they knew of the defect on these engines. there are many almost identical mechanical issues over multiple years for the chevy equinox. this is not just a few of us that have experienced this engine failure, but enough to have a class action initiated. having a $16k loan remaining, i have no other choice but to repair the engine. the government (which was assisted gm out of bankruptcy) needs to hold gm accountable by forcing them to take action by recalling all affected models, and to reimburse those who have already made the repairs in addition to having gm inspect the repaired engines to ensure no future problems to pre-empt the fatalities that will eventually begin to add up.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while idling at a stop, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and it was diagnosed that the camshaft sensor needed to be replaced. the contact purchased and replaced the part. the local dealer was not contacted for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified and provided service request number: 8-4214923931. the manufacturer referred the contact to the local dealer. the failure mileage was 94,722. the vin was not available.
Car stalled out while stopped at a stop light. was able to restart and drive home. was scheduled for an oil change the next day, went to drive the car and made it three houses down before it stalled out while driving. engine light came on and would not start back up. had it towed to a repair shop and they said it jumped time, and the timing chain broke and made a mess of the engine. engine needs to be replaced. failed at 73k miles. bought the car certified used at 36k two years ago and have had it serviced regularly. don't have money for repairs and chevy dealer won't fix....
The cam shaft position sensor is defective.the vehicle shuts down when idle is low.
Timing belt failed within two years of the first time being fixed. first time was when vehicle was purchased used at approx 123k, second time it has failed is approx 179k. there is an ongoing oil consumption issue with the vehicle. i have heard that there is a recall on the oil issue that was not publically announced and i would like to find out why it wasnt if in fact this is an issue. timing belt should not fail twice . took vehicle in to shop after vehicle began shaking violently and jumping while stopped at a light, in drive with the breaks on. when i went to drive, vechicle would drive but had severe loss in poer and was vibrating the whole time. upon taking to the shop and having an engine diagnostic test done, it was confirmed that the timing chain was indeed stretched out and would need to be repaired at a cost of $2500. this repair had been made two years prior as well , having had to replace the chains and such due to this recurring and ongoign oil issue
Excessive engine oil consumption, engine makes noise, need to change oil every 2000 miles, need to check oil level every week. not safe to drive.
Wiper blade motor stopped working in a heavy downpour. i was on a road i know so was able to pull off safely. if i didn't know this road i am positive i would have had an accident. the manifold was changed in 2013. today is march 22, 2018. last week i had the manifold changed again. cracked again. there were fumes coming into the passenger area. the car is in the repair garage again because the fumes are even worse. the car has always had a loud ticking sound. it uses a lot of oil. i complained to the dealer before the warranty ran out. they did an oil consumption test and said the oil use was within normal range. how can this be normal range when i put a couple quarts of oil every 200 miles. this car is junk.
Excessive oil consumption- my 2011 equinox has excessive oil consumption (and it looks like majority of them do!) chevy issued a statement about this but it is no longer fixable and, unfortunately, these vehicles are still on the road. i bought one that is now dead because of this issue. it started to shake as i got to a stop sign and when i went to the shop, the same day, it was completely out of oil. i keep regular oil changes on my vehicle and my dad owns a body shop so it was well taken care of. there was no reason for the oil to be gone except for a flaw in the vehicle. i'm extremely upset that this wasn't a full recall from chevy, that was the right thing to do. instead i'm out a vehicle because i can no longer submit paperwork to get the fix reimbursed and the dealership would need to rebuild or replace the entire motor to get it working again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start and an abnormal clicking noise was heard. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to 1ownercar (410 w oak ln, glenolden, pa 19036, (610) 915-3417) where it was diagnosed that the battery was dead. the contact mentioned that the alternator, starter, and battery were replaced, but the failure recurred and could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 97,000.
The 2011 chevrolet equinox i own started to idle really high then really low and made the car speed up and then the idle speed would drop to a point where the engine would die. you would have no pedal control at all just rolling along on a city street. it happened out of the blue and was very scary in busy traffic. i brought the car to the chevrolet dealership and was informed that they had special coverages on the vehicle that i was never notified about.(even though i owned the car at the time the special coverages were released). the dealership told me that chevrolet was well aware that this car has a problem with excessive oil consumption. (i already new that with oil changes and having to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles). the dealership also informed me that chevrolet, new that the timing chain on this vehicle would break and be very dangerous to the engine. the dealership said they would also fix that on special coverages. i told them to go ahead and fix these two issues. they took the engine apart, and informed me that because of these 2 issues that gm and chevrolet were well aware of, it had scoring in my cylinders. the vehicle was extremely dangerous to be driving because it would idle out of control and shut itself off out of nowhere. the dealership was confident that the scoring on the cylinders was a direct result of the two issues that were covered under the special coverages. i was never notified of any of these special coverages from gm or chevrolet. chevrolet customer service told me they had my address correct but could not confirm that the notices were sent to me for the special coverages. my family and i were in danger driving this vehicle, and chevrolet new all about the dangers in driving this vehicle. i now have a car sitting at the dealership with a blown engine and chevrolet won't do anything for me. there should have been recalls.
Pcv orifice frozen with ice, caused crankcase overpressurization and blew out rear crankshaft seal, lost all engine oil. vehicle was on highway at 65 mph.
I just had to replace the exhaust manifold for the second time in 2 years on my 2011 chevy equinox due to very large cracks. the car has around 90,000 miles on it and i realoze it's 7 years old, but i tale pretty good care of it and get regular maintence usually at an actual chevy dealership. the first time i expressed my suprise to the mechanic when he yold me there was a very large crack in the exhaust manifold. his response was that chevy equinoxes are widely known to go through manifolds quickly and frequently, again this was at an actual chevy service station at a chevy dealership. the second time less than 2 years later when the check engine light came on again i took my vehicle to th aaa certified care care center and again same thing, manifold large crack must be replaced and aaa tech told me same story, chevy equinox manifold are widely known not to last. only this time in addition to the manifold, the cracked manifold had somehow caused damage to the catalytic converter which is now broken and must be replaced. so my question is, if these are widely known defects among 2010-2011 chevy equinoxes, why hasnt chevy issued recalls for manifolds and caralytic converters?
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a local dealer (dave white chevrolet, 5880 monroe st, sylvania, oh 43560) where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. the vin was not available.
I own a 2011 chevrolet equinox ls awd with roughly 86,000 miles. while driving back an appointment this morning, the vehicle began to sputter and the "engine reduced power"/"service stabilitrak system" lights turned on. i was on the interstate with morning traffic that was going 70mph (the speed limit) and higher. the vehicle's rpm reduced suddenly and drastically, and i was only able to sustain 40mph. i was alone. i coasted off the highway as quickly as i could, stopped at the multi-lane intersection, and the vehicle completely shut off. i could not restart it. it was 9 degrees outside with snow on the ground, and the heat stopped working in the vehicle, too. the power steering shut down. i had to wait outside to direct traffic so that i would not get hit. it was a frightening experience. after the tow to the dealership, the mechanic notified me that the entire engine needs to be replaced, quoting me between $2300 for a used engine and $6500 for a new one. corporate has only offered 10% cost share for a new engine. this is unacceptable and a known issue based on consumer complaints i have read. the complaints are consistent and point to engine failure with total replacement in the range i was quoted. i do not have the money to replace the engine, and it is a shame that a vehicle with so few miles and years needs this type of repair! furthermore, i could have been severely injured or worse, as has happened to many others! this vehicle has had no collisions, no major damages, and i have kept up with all recommended maintenance. now i have no vehicle, no possibility to recover its value, and i am devastated about the financial blow.
Takata recall my vehicle is have problem with oil consumption, exhaust fumes coming out of the heater and a rattling noise. i took it into the shop in the car mechanic informed me that that the problem is not worth fixing because the year make and model keeps giving problems. he said he worked on the same type of vehicle multiple times in every 2011 chevy equinox has had the same problems. he said it's not worth putting the money into and that that year was a faulty car and to find out if there was a recall because of the negative reports. i looked online no recall so i'm wondering why multiple vehicles are having the same situation. he said he spoke with my car dealership and they said that this problem is very common. and just today my vehicle engine started smoking. i'm working on getting a problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle hesitated and stalled. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to community chevrolet buick (4521 university ave, cedar falls, ia 50613, (319) 277-5010) where it was diagnosed that the engine control module failed and the throttle body assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 84120242638. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 114,744. *tt
I called in this complaint. received a number odi11090436. on 2/01/2018 after dark i was on a 4-lane going 60-65 mph., my car's acceleration suddenly went down and the engine started chugging. i braked, drove to the side of the road and parked. no chugging while in park. had to be towed to a chevy dealership in cedar falls, ia. they had to replace the throttle body assembly. when asked how often this particular shop sees this specific break-down, the service manager said a couple times a month. it seems to me that if they are seeing this many, that other dealerships would be seeing this pattern repeated as well. my question is why hasn't this issue been flagged to general motors? i was lucky that there was no one close behind me on the highway. it was a sudden event, the check engine light and a couple of other lights came on, it startled me and it took a second or two to begin braking. this was a costly fix and not one i would expect to have to repair with 114,744 miles on the vehicle.
Engine failed due to excessive oil consumption. i was in the process of working through an oil consumption test with the dealership but was unable to finish. my car failed thankfully while it was stationary in my driveway. it is my understanding that this failure could have happened at any time even with my kids in the car or on the highway. i've been told that due to the vehicle consuming excessive oil between regular oil changes it results in issues with the timing chain which eventually lead to engine issues and ultimately failure. there is currently a technical service bulletin released by gm for the known issue but no information was even sent to me about the issue so that i could be made aware of it and monitor the problem.
Stabilitrak light comes on then engine power reduced and vehicle dropped from 65 to 25 mph instantly driving on highway
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle consumed too much oil. the vehicle depleted a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. also, without warning, the vehicle would decelerate and lose power. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.
In 2014 failed oil consumption test got work done on engine replacing piston and etc now i had (1/2018 ) vehicle shutting off at stop signs or lights .took vechicle to personal mechanic it was down a quart or oil but wasn't due for another oil change till 109.000 miles .car was at 106,000 miles at this time. was told that i needed an upper fuel pump, cam shaft , timing chain set.and plugs misfired. after calling gmc i was told that i had no warranties left. so i called the chevy certified dealer who perform the engine work in 2014 . i was told that their warranty only last for a year and that i have special coverage still left that may aplly but would have to be inspected by their specialist and $100 fee.now mind you my car was already being worked on at my private mechanic .after paying $1375.00 for all the issues listed above my catalyst converter is bad. i been having ongoing engine issues with this vechicle.
Had to replace the catalytic converter due to over heating of the engine/exhaust as a result of the excessive oil consumption (sept 2017). stabilitrak service light came on and reduction of engine power and speed while driving (jan 2018).
Vehicle running erratic, oil leaks from rear main seal ,service bulletin 14882 ,problem caused from pcv system, vehicle was in motion in traffic
Throttle body one year after i have the cyclone rings replace. the engine lost power in middle of busy interstate.
Oil consumption
