Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

I bought this car about 18 months ago from a used dealer ship after the car turned 12 months the car started saying it was over heating but when looking at the vehicle it was not hot at all the sensor just said overheating all the way to the red when the car read overheating the radiator fluid overflowed with out being hot when opening the lid there where air bubbles with no heat. i have spent over $1000 dollars trying to fix the problem with still no success when it said over heating the car starts slowing down and then it stops where ever you are at right away sometimes in the middle of the road. when at time it said over heating the heater stops working. i have had to let the air out several time a day and now it said overheating as soon as i leave my home. i have done some research and i am not the only one with this problem i have tried everything others have suggested but nothing works. i have got a new radiator, water pump, temperature sensor ,thermostat, filter and still nothing. i took it to get it checked with the computer and 18 sensors went off and 8 where failed sensors. i wanted to bring this to your attention it has happened to a lot of other people just google it and you will see. i just want people to be safe and this car is not safe i have children and i live in a area that has cold weather for 3 months. i have been stuck in that car when it read over heating when it was not. i have bought about over 39 bottles of radiator fluid to keep it full but one bottle last me less the a day. thank you very much for letting me inform you of this concern. i have gotten stuck on he highway and street with my kids. the car is now just seating in my drive way.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that mist from the heater blew inside the vehicle and created an abnormal odor. in addition, the instrument control indicators illuminated. the mist prevented the contact from seeing out of the windows. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a new water pump was needed. the mechanic flushed out the system and placed a new heat system in the engine with new anti-freeze. the failure recurred later the same week. the manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 167,000.

The engine light came on. on-star codes are p0137 and p0128. i have 81,368 miles/130948,843750 km. i was driving.

In april of 2015 i purchased a 2006 chevy equinox from sid dillion chevy dealership. approximately 1 month after having the vehicle it rained and water had leaked into driver side floor board. when i started the vehicle it started but there was no acleration and the car wouldn't drive when put in gear. i informed the dealership and was instructed to bring the vechical back out the dealership to be looked at. in finding they informed me that it was sunroof drain that backup and leaked water into my driver side floor board, also leaking water on to the throttle sensor which is located on the gas pedal. they informed me that drain had been blown out and the error code was reset and the vechical ran again. this problem happened again a few months later and i was again instructed to bring the vehicle back to the dealership, this the same procedure was done as before and i asked what can be done to fix this problem and was informed that due to the design of the sunroofs drain, when it rains i will have water that leaks into vechical if there is large amounts of rain and that because there are no broken parts the problem can not be fixed. i informed chevrolet main center of the issue and was informed that there has never been any recalls on the vechical and to take it to the dealership to have the problem fixed. i've taken preventive measures but keeping the drian cleared and when the problem happens resetting the error codes, but last week 06-07-18 i had the line cleared and the following day it rained and the throttle sensor errored reset the code and vechical ran. yesterday while driving i got caught in heavy rainfall the vechical completely stopped in the middle of a 4 lane busy road and would not move, water began leaking into the driver side and also from the pedal and intior lights. i'm very fearful of driving the vechical. this problem is very dangerous and unsafe.

Temperature blend door can cause accident cause it won't defrost windows

In all driving modes, heater only blows cold air, not hot air

The key is hanging up in the ignition after turning vehicle off. it is often difficult to put the key back in the ignition to then start it again. the vehicle now stalls while running without notice. when it does, all power cuts off (power brakes, traction control, lights radio, breaks - anything electric shuts off. have been able to pull the vehicle over and restart it almost immediately. happens on the street as well as freeway. i wonder whether this is covered by a recall or something. please let me know as this does not seem to be very safe.

Car started over heating due to cooling system value, blown head gasket after 93000 miles ran hot while idle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. when the ignition was turned to the on position, the ignition failed to turn without warning.sometimes, the contact was unable to place the key in the ignition or remove the key from the ignition. also, the vehicle overheated and the temperature gauge increased. when the vehicle was turned off, the engine fan ran for an hour afterward, which caused the battery to fail. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 160,000.

Vehicle randomly shuts off completely at different speeds while driving. it has happened once every three days up to 6 times in 20 minutes. it has occurred on the freeway and city streets. had pcm reprogrammed, no luck. i have been testing different fixes. while doing so i noticed i am able to pull the key out at any ignition position.

Vehicle started overheating with a jumped idle, i replaced the lower intake, valve seats, o rings, 3 thermostats. it has been bleed for two days now, at first it started to overheat while driving so i bled the cooling system and tried it again. it drove fantastic didnt overheat at all. i pulled into my parking spot which the car had been running there for over an hour no problem. i thought the problem was fixed now its overheating parked and its just inconsistent and leaving my stranded

When my equinox hit 60,400 miles it was running fine and after parking it for 20 minutes it suddenly ran hot which caused the heads to warp. chevrolet paid $3000 towards the repair and i paid $1000. they called it a "grace warranty" and gave me a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty on the repair. the car was repaired but never the same afterwards. constant overheating and coolant loss issues. i have flushed the system. changed thermostats twice, and changed the corrosive dexcool antifreeze to the yellow non corrosive universal antifreeze. it ran great for 1 month then started overheating again. the coolant is full, thermostat is new. it is fine while driving, heat begins to climb when stopped.

Faulty gaskets (head gasket and intake gasket) lets air into cooling system. the engine coolant was displaced to the overflow tank. i was at a stoplight and the vehicle started to sputter as it started to overheat, was able to get thru the intersection to a service station. gasket repairs estimated cost $2400.

Having problems starting sub. new battery, all lights and radio works, key slides out when care is on. engine and fan come on for no reason.

2006 chevy equinox: heat censor went off all of a sudden, after going less than a block from my house, saying the engine was overheating. we stopped the car and shut off the engine. the engine was super hot and so was everything inside, including the rod you prop the hood open with. we let it cool down and checked the fluids, which looked fine. oil was fine, coolant fine, etc. we turned the car back on and the censor was off. we drove to the mechanic with no air conditioning running and it never got over heated. a friend said to check the fans to see if they were working. they were not. then, when we got it to the mechanic they did a chemical test and found a head gasket was blown and it was the quickest chemical change they have ever seen. there was no check engine light or any warning until the incident. this is only the tip of the iceburg. we have only owned this vehicle for 2.5years but we have had the driver window motor replaced, all the door and window seals are bad, both head lights have condensation( poor design, oh and the dealer said $1000 to replace) which keeps blowing the drivers head light, the ignition sticks, the visor on the drivers side fell off in the first month, the crank seal was replaced, the erg valve was replaced, and the windshield replaced after the dealer supoosedly fixed the chip. we did recieve a letter from the dealer offering to buy back our vehicle after 4 months of owning it. we thought they just wanted us to come buy another vehicle and go upsidedown on our loan, since they never give you what you paid for it. guess we should have taken the offer. now we wonder, "what is next!" we owe over 6k still and are forking out over 600 in car rental fees.

car always drove beautiful. purchased used in january, died in june. driving under normal conditions and suddenly ran hot. pulled over and cooled down. nursed it home pulled over twice in 15 miles to cool down. diagnosed by ase certified mechanic. dealer was unavailable by cell. many complaints on internet and youtube.com about the same situation. sudden rise in temp like a stuck thermostat, but it's a head gasket....

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. while driving at approximately 70 mph, the reduced engine power warning light illuminated and the vehicle drastically reduced speed to below 5 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic more than twice and they were not able to replicate the failure. the contact indicated that the independent mechanic replaced the throttle body, the sensor, and reprogrammed the sensor, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

I have owned a 2006 chevy equinox since 2008. we recently noticed a swooshing fluid noise coming from the dash. when the car idles the temp light gauge comes on and the needle goes to hot. took it to bill jacobs chevrolet in joliet illinois today and the advised it has a leaky head gasket with a minimum cost to repair of $1500. after researching this on the internet, there have been numerous complaints from consumers with the same exact problem directed to gm and they have done nothing. many mechanics have said it is a design flaw and gm should be doing a recall. *tr

I replaced the egr valve sensor and hose still getting a code 1404.i don't understand what the main problem could be unless it's the pcm causing problems and it has been changed as well. *tr

I was driving 55 mph down a road, and my car was completely fine, then my car slowed to 40mph, then completely shut off. i was able to pull over on the side of the road. i turned the car off and tried to turn it back on but nothing happened. i waited about ten minutes and tried again and it worked and ran fine afterwards. i have seen many other similar complaints about this and i am concerned with the safety of my vehicle.

Abs activation at low speeds on dry pavement. this happens randomly and changes the vehicle breaking distance. it is also unknown how much it will change the distance. so it can potentially cause a low speed impact accident. this is due to not knowing where to break for proper stopping distance. engine problem when starting vehicle. the vehicle turns over then stalls. only way i have found to prevent it from happening is to press the gas pedal while turning it over. wiper issue. my passenger side windshield wiper doesn't work. i live in an area where heavy snow fall happens. this is a danger to myself and others on the road. if my vehicle is on the road during a blizzard or heavy snow visibility is lost on half my windshield.

Equinox overheated. we immediately replaced the thermostat and water pump. did not fix the problem. the equinox is currently in the shop, the tests showed the equinox has two cracked heads. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. while the vehicle was being serviced, the engine compartment caught fire. the fire was extinguished. the technician diagnosed that the injector o-ring failed. the vehicle was not repaired. a police and a fire report were not filed and no injuries were reported. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 120,381.

We just purchased our 2006 chevy equinox on 11-15-2014 an after leaving the dealership we were caught in a snow storm and attempted to turn on the heat to warm up inside. the heat wasn't hot and the defrost would not work either and so need less to say we had to use a/c an crack the windows an constantly wipe windshield to be able to safely drive home. that being said i began to do research on the problem an as searching i am finding out that there are neuromas complaints of the chevy equinox having the same problem i have described. reading the complaints i have found out the repairs are costly and gm has not made any attempts to recall the faulty parts. an so i felt that i had a duty to step up an join the patrons who are also or have experienced the same problem. unfortunately gm needs to step up an take responsibility for the problems before someone is killed because of faulty parts. *tr

3.4l gm power plant used in untold amounts of vehicles blowing head gaskets, and intake gaskets since 1996. i design flaw that was never addressed. they should be held accountable for that. we cant keep allowing companies to take advantage of hard working people buy selling them junk. all of them need to be held to a higher standard.

In the last month my 2006 equinox's engine has failed 5 times, 3 times while sitting at intersections and twice while driving down the road. all 5 times the lights have gone on the dash and then all power to the engine has been lost. it takes a good minute before the engine will turn over again. we have taken the car to the shop for extensive work (including wheel bearings and ignition switch) and they have not been able to fix or even pinpoint the problem. i know that the 2005 equinox was recalled for this issue and want to know when the '06 will be added to the list??? *tr

Car wont start, turns over but have to put foot on gas to make it start. sputters for a few seconds and is then ok. sometimes it takes more than 1 time to start it. *tr

The engine failed. this is mechanic report from chevy dealership:" the technician performed diagnosis and found misfire on the number 4 cylinder. the exhaust lifter is collapsed causing noise and not operating, also heard a lower end knock from rod bearings, suspect loss of oil pressure at one time to be the cause of internal damage. with the upper and lower internal noises, recommend engine replacement to avoid further repairs due to being run on low oil pressure. ". i had to pay to replace the engine. *tr

It would chug when i started it and check engine light came on. i took it in to a dealership to get fixed and they said there is a big crack in the egr valve piping. *tr

Engine light came on and the car is hard to start. i took the car back to the dealership and had it tested. they said it is on because of the gas cap. i was told to replace the gas cap and that would solve the issue with the starting. they reset the light. i bought a new gas cap. light came back on. it is till on and having problems starting. no more chevrolets for me. *tr

Our 2006 equinox has had our engine shut down on us several times between april 3rd thru sept. 4th of 2014. it has shut down twice while at a stop and about 4 times while driving. after 1-2 minutes, the car will start back up. it seems it could be dangerous if the car shuts down while driving 50-60 miles per hour and there is no where to pull over and a car behind you may not notice that your car has shut down and may not stop quick enough. at times, the brakes are hard to stop the car and the steering wheel is hard to turn when the engine shuts down. *tr

2006 equinox overheated causing car to quit on interstate, had to be towed, rent a car, rent a motel room, had my car towed to chevrolet service tallahassee, was told that had head gasket problem ext cost 2400.00 if no other problems so i had car towed home, had to pay for trailer and gas, took to local mechanic he verified what chevrolet dealer had said est cost at this point $2000.00 may be more if other damages found, researched online found there are multiple complaints regarding this problem for this year equinox called gmc was told had i took it to chev. dealership they might could have helped me get discount but could not help me because i took it took local mechanic. this car is a big danger me and my grandkids could have been killed we barely made it off the interstate. gmc needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility. *tr

Vehicle runs fine, shut it off it won't start. sometimes it will take 2 or 3 turns to start it other times 10 to 15 minutes to start it. replaced ignition cylinder, switch and tumblers, thinking this was it. no. no one can fine problem. this is a problem with other 2006 equinox from the forums i read. this is a safety issue, because it leaves people like me stranded. i have emailed chevrolet once already and told them if anything happens to me when i get stranded for my family to sue them. chevrolet told me to take my car to a dealer, i called and the person i talked to told me to bring it in and if the problem didn't happen while the car was there , they would charge me $ 85.00 per hr. , it doesn't happen every day , it might go a month without doing it and then it might do it 3 times in one day. i just bought this car january 2014. i hate to trade it in, because they will just sell it to someone and i don't want it to be someone with children and have this happen to them. so, in ending this complaint i hope that you will look into this 2006 equinox problem. thank you !! ( this gets scary to a 63 yr. women at nighttime ). *tr

Was idling in car at military check point to get to school in 2012 and fans under hood got loud to cool it down. went dead several times. let sit 45 minutes. checked radiator and was full of water. barely made it home, going dead all the way. took to dealer and said could not find problem at all charged me over $100 to check it. for months it would do this off and on. then the fan under the hood started coming on and would not go off. then the car would run when i turned the key off. now in january 2014, the heater is blowing cold air and i have no defrost and the engine temp. gauge is all of the way to hot. i can only run it for 15 minutes then it goes dead and i have to wait 45 minutes for it to cool down to go another 45 minutes. really bad for me because it take me 30 minutes to get to work so i have to add another 45 minutes.....that's there and then 45 extra home. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the water pump failed. the water pump was repaired but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to an authorized dealer, who then advised that the head gasket would need replacing. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

Hit a one ton low bed dump truck, the whole front end of my suv was demolished, my airbags didn't deploy and i ended up with really bad whiplash from the accident, to where i'm still in major pain! wondering if there was a lawsuit against this? never dealt with a wreck this bad, i was just curious! *tr

I was stopped at a stop sign when my vehicle completely shut down, completely. no power to the console or anything else. i couldn't even turn on my hazard lights. i was afraid that someone going to hit me because it was dark. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle overheated. the contact pulled over to check under the hood and found smoke coming from the engine. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was advised that the head gasket had malfunctioned. the contact did not have any repairs performed on the vehicle. the failure mileage was 141,000. mah

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to dealer. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 68,759. *tr

Spouse driving the vehicle indicated that the temperature gauge on the vehicle had risen quickly while sitting idle at a stop light. the gauge only decreased slightly when the vehicle was in motion. suspected a thermostat. took the vehicle to the dealer, they indicated the same. replaced the thermostat and the problem continued. tests indicated a blown head gasket. the vehicle had no symptoms of this issue. no loss of coolant. no coolant in the oil. no oil in the coolant. no white smoke from the exhaust. the only indicator was the quickly rising temperature. at that point, no preemptive measures could be taken to fix the problem. *tr

I was driving on the interstate (out of state - hours away from home), which had a steep grade and all of a sudden the lights on the dash came on and the car began to slow down. i was able to pull over on the side of the road. had to have the car towed to the nearest dealership. ended up having to get a new engine ( well warranty company put in used engine that had 40,000 miles on it). had to rent a car to get home and to get back to pick up the car weeks later. *tr

Water swishing noise in dash area. increasing difficulty turning key in ignition switch. must pull it out, turn it over and push up and turn to get it to start car. at 65,000 miles door flap on a/c heater failed, weather was 15-20 degrees f in december and caused heater and defrost system to fail. we, incurred a $1400 repair bill for a $129 part, labor expensive as part is "difficult to get to" . many other complaints for these same issue are posted on-line. does someone have to get in a serious accident or die before they recall any of these? *tr

i was driving my child to school one morning and the heater started blowing out cold air. some time later, i took my chevy equinox to my mechanic. he said it would cost around $1,000 to repair. this was a shock because my mechanic is very reputable; i have used him for years. he never tries to cheat me or any of his other customers. when he quoted me that price, that's when i knew something was seriously wrong with my car. i don't have that kind of money - i'm a single mother of 2 kids and i was laid off from my job a few months ago. i called chevrolet 3 times and nobody would help me. in the meantime, i did some research to see if any other consumers have experienced this same problem. i found over 600 complaints from other drivers about this exact same issue. i took my car to a mechanic again and was advised that chevy/gm hasn't issued a recall for this problem (car heater blowing cold air) because it would not be cost-effective for chevy to fix it. this is a problem that chevy/gm has known about and, from what i've seen, the problem exists in chevy equinox's from all different model years. not only will i never buy a chevy again, i am filing a class-action lawsuit against chevy/gm for failing to issue a recall to fix a known problem. even if i did have the money, i should not have to pay out of pocket for something that this company knows is a problem. *tr
