Is Chevy 1.4 Turbo a Good Engine? Problems, Life Expectancy & Specs

The Chevy 1.4 Turbo engine, part of GM's Ecotec family, is a compact and powerful engine designed to deliver impressive performance. When it comes to power, the Chevy 1.4 Turbo engine generates 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, providing ample acceleration and the ability to conquer challenging terrain. However, like any turbocharged engine, it is not without its flaws. Some common problems with this engine include faulty PCV valves, which can cause lean conditions and trigger trouble codes, and weak exhaust manifolds that are prone to cracking.

These cam phasers allow for precise timing adjustments, maximizing performance across different RPM ranges.

Speaking of cylinders, the bore (that's the diameter of the cylinder) measures 72.5 mm, and the stroke (that's how far the piston travels) is 82.6 mm. The bore center, which is the distance between the centers of the cylinders, is 78 mm.

Let's move on to the fuel system. This engine utilizes a sequential multi-port fuel injection setup, working in harmony with electronic throttle control. This combination ensures precise fuel delivery, allowing for optimal performance and fuel efficiency. And you'll be happy to know that it runs on regular unleaded fuel, so no need to break the bank at the pump.

Now, let's talk power. This little 1.4L Turbo engine cranks out a respectable 138 horsepower (or around 103 kilowatts) to get you moving. And when it comes to twisting force, you've got 148 lb.-ft. (or approximately 200 Newton-meters) of torque at your disposal. That torque is what helps you accelerate quickly and tackle those inclines with ease.

Possible Problems with Chevy 1.4L Turbo Engine

This engine is not without flaws either. As any turbocharged machine heart, it faces the same risks of turbo failure, overheating or simply  getting clogged too fast. But let’s take a closer look on the most common problems the GM 1.4L Turbo has.

Faulty PCV Valve

If you've been plagued by the P0171 trouble code, it's likely that you're dealing with a lean condition in your engine. But fear not, we're going to tackle this head-on. One of the culprits behind this issue is often a faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. In some cases, the valve cover may also need to be replaced. We'll cover both of these components in our DIY fix.

To fix the Chevy 1.4L Turbo engine, make sure you have the necessary tools handy: a socket wrench set, a screwdriver, lubricating spray (optional but recommended), and, of course, a can-do attitude. Replace the valve yourself or with professional help.

The average labor cost for replacing a PCV valve ranges from $20 to $27. Keep in mind that these costs can vary depending on various factors such as the location, the specific vehicle model, and any additional repairs or parts needed.

Weak Exhaust Manifold

Speaking of turbos, the integral exhaust manifold and exhaust housing on this turbo have a notorious tendency to crack. Interestingly, back in the '80s and '90s, turbo cars often suffered from similar exhaust housing cracks, but it didn't always lead to major issues. 

To fix the cracking issue with the integral exhaust manifold and exhaust housing on a turbo, you have a few options like replacing it or welding. If the cracks are small and not too severe, welding can be a viable option. You can take the turbo to a professional welder who specializes in automotive repairs. They can weld the cracks and reinforce the housing to prevent further issues. The cost of welding will vary depending on the extent of the damage and the rates charged by the welder.

As for replacement, some companies offer aftermarket exhaust housings that are more durable and less prone to cracking. These can be a good option if you want to upgrade your turbocharger's reliability. The cost will depend on the specific housing you choose, but it can range from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand. Typically, aftermarket exhaust housings can range in price from around $100 to several hundred dollars.

Chevy 1.4 Turbo Engine Life Expectancy

The Chevy 1.4 Turbo engine is generally considered to be a reliable unit with a potential life expectancy of up to 150,000 or even 200,000 miles before requiring major repairs. With proper maintenance and care, many owners have reported trouble-free operation and longevity from this engine.

However, it's important to note that every engine is unique, and factors such as maintenance history, driving conditions, and individual usage patterns can influence its lifespan. Regular oil changes, timely maintenance, and adherence to recommended service intervals can significantly contribute to the engine's longevity.
