Steering column locked while the vehicle was parked. i spoke w/4 different sales persons, customer service reps, and mechanics at dealership and no one knew why, and all they could tell me was to have the vehicle towed. 1 little problem, the vehicle was parked in a parking space, and it took two tow trucks and 3 hours of my time to get the vehicle on a flat bed, that is after knocking on all the neighbor's doors to findout who owns which car, and having move their cars, so the tow guys can access the vehicle by placed the front of it on a free wheel and read of it on a free wheel, turning the vehicle 180 degrees, and then placing it on a flat bed. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

This car has been nothing but problems, steering has locked on me 2 times which i was late for work both times, and is a saftey concern , what if i was in a bad area to be stuck??? the dealer says nothing is wrong with the car but when checking the nhtsa.gov sites there are tons of cars with the same problems. chevrolet has gotten rid of the steering lock in 2001 and 2002 why is that because it doesnt operate correctly. the tire pressure was always off on each tire. my fuel gauge is always wrong. not to include my engine ticks very loud and the dealer says nothing is wrong with that there is also oil leakage and consumption problem. i just want my $50k car fixed. if this does not get resolved i will have to take this a step futher and review legal options. thank you. nhtsa for your help.*ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

Column lock on the c5 corvette is all to common and a recurring issue stranding car and passengers in remote locations putting them at risk. car must be towed to be repaired.*ak
The steering column lockup occurred on start up. gm's fix for this condition was performed by the dealer and there has been no further occurrence. however, two of my friends have had the "dealer fix" performed, only to have the failure happen a second time. i am worried that this lockup will happen at speed. ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
Column locked up when i started vehicle. despite many attempts to unlock the column, it failed to work. i had to get the car towed to a local dealership as i was at work away from home. this dealer was sewell chevrolet in new orleans, which was fantastic with the service. the problem is that this is a very common problem with the c5's, and chevy will not issue a recall or be helpful in solving this matter. the lockup came at a great inconvenience to me, as i had to take a sick day from work and i almost missed supporting my sister in person at the miss louisiana pageant. while that may sound small, what if i get stranded in a "not so nice" part of town. gm could be responsible for somebody having to deal with a really difficult situation. and for that reason i am writing you and chevrolet. please do all you can to help me and others resolve this ridiculous matter. thanks.
This car is equipped with a motorized column lock which will send an error code and disable the car requiring a tow. while i have only gotten an error code, i will eventually receive a lock up and require a costly and inconvenient tow job. i am told that there is no occurance of a lock up during movement of the car. many others have purchased a kit which negates this devise but it would most likely void my warranty, for this reason i'm reporting this condition. *ak
Steering column locked and was unable to unlock it, even with key in ignition and engine running.*ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
Steering column locked while in motion (low speed) in a parking lot. dic readout said "remove key wait 10 seconds". i did--no effect. steering wheel would not unlock...car has been towed to dealer for warranty service. imagine if i'd been on the highway and this happened. ihave since talked to other c5 corvette owners and searched the internet for this problem--it has been ongoing for over 5 years yet no resolution or even acknowledgement from gm has been reported. service techs report this as a "common" problem.*ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
Steering column locked as i was pulling awat from gas pumps. could have been catastrophic if i had not been able to stop before hitting a pump. dealership replaced part and said that they have seen this occur in two other corvettes. corvetteforum.com reports that over 3000 corvettes nationwide have the same problem. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

Started car, given code to turn off, remove key & wait 10 seconds. did this then started car again & received code that the steering collum locked. tried re-inserting key, tried moving wheel slightly from side to side and then disconnected the battery. started car & wheel still locked, put car in reverse & moved 3 feet, car died, restarted car and all was well. car has been driven approximately 250 subsequent to this incident. i have read about this problem happening to other 97-2000 corvette owners. local chevy dealer and gm do not appear to be overly concerned as the car is presently functional. i did notify gm's customer assistance center at 800-222-1020 and spoke to frank. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
Started car up and steering wheel remailed locked. started to drive away from a parked state but steering wheel would not move. dealer replaces locking mechanism. i'm hearing of several other chevrolet corvette (1997-2000) that are experiencing the same problem. one account was that he was traveling at 40mph when this happened. many have had the fix i've had and it happened again. i'm concerned that this might happen again...or while driving along at highway speeds. i'm even more concerned that you folks are not all over this one!! ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

Service column lock indication came up on the digital driver's information center (dic). this has been an extremely common problem with 1997-2000 corvettes. although the incident with my car took place upon start-up, meaning the car was not in motion, if it happened while the vehicle was in operation, it could be catastrophic. you simply cannot steer the car, since the steering wheel locks. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
1. the right front wheel weights flew off on the drive home from the dealer after purchase. the rear wheel weights flew off , first the left and then the right, while driving at night, slamming into the inner fender liners. the rear end began to bounce dramatically, as each wheel had over 4 ounces of weights on them. wheels are the extra cost magnesium wheels. 2. on a trip, the gas gauge suddenly dropped to empty, from 3/4 full, and the dic alarm (low fuel) went on. pulled into a gas station, thinking i was out of fuel. i could only put in 4 gallons! 3. steering column lock would not release and could not steer car, but car did start and go into gear ! i think this is the most serious failure as one may not notice that the steering column lock was on and actually drive off, but when attempting to turn vehicle could only go straight, as straight into sombody!! help!!!! ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
