Steering column lock issue - had latest 2006 recall work performed by dealer. did not solve problem, same error code reads on dash and car shuts itself off when try to move it more than 2 mph. dealer says gm is not covering it. want to charge me to replace same part they put in as a part of the recall!!! also, we had to pay for the flat bed tow for this same problem twice now! we have had recall work done 4 times on this same problem! now they say its not covered? how can they get away with this? they are dragging the corvette name into the dirt! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering); however, the oem replacement part failed. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer (rick hendrick city chevrolet, 5101 e independence blvd, charlotte, nc 28212, (980) 242-5621) within months due to the ignition locking and the security alarm randomly activating, which caused the vehicle to completely shut down. the vehicle was towed to a second dealer (fred caldwell chevrolet, 974 bethel st, clover, sc 29710, 1-888-692-6546 and 1-803-222-4581). the manufacturer was contacted several times over the years and was aware that various fifth edition vehicles were affected. the manufacturer had not developed a newly designed oem part and expected the contact to have the part replaced a third time. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action numbers: ea02031 (steering) and pe02054 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.

Steering column locks up on 2000 my chevrolet corvette. i had never experienced any issue until i had a dealer, (marty feldman chevrolet; novi, mi), perform a recall initiative on june 20, 2005 for the problem at general motors' request. after the recall was performed, the steering column locked up while i was backing the vehicle out of my garage to prepare it for winter storage in october '05. please note: the engine did not shut off when the steering column locked. i returned the vehicle to the dealer in april 2006 to investigate after which they informed me that they were able to duplicate the problem and re-performed the recall initiative. i picked up the vehicle upon completion, it worked fine for two weeks. i then experienced the service steering column lock warning on the vehicle monitoring system on 5/22/2006 while driving down the road, however, the steering column did not lock up. upon leaving that destination once again, the steering locked up while exiting a parking lot and, once again, the engine did not shut off. i immediately returned the car to the dealer. the dealer informed me the problem was due to the battery being low because the vehicle was in storage from october '05 to april '06. the problem with that scenario is 1) the problem first occurred prior to the vehicle being stored in october, and, 2) i replaced the battery in august of 2005 with a new one. after having my vehicle for 9 days, the dealer informed me that there was nothing else they could do and to come get the car. when i picked it up i was advised that if the warning appears again to disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery to enable the system to reset...totally ignoring the potential safety hazard of the steering wheel locking up and was charged for their services. i am now afraid to drive the car and consider it rendered useless until general motors can assure me that they are capable of fixing their problem. *nm

Consumer steering column locked and was undriveable. *ts there was a recall regarding the issue, however the recall had already been performed 90 days prior and the manufacturer refused to diagnose or repair the vehicle at their expense, even though the dealership service manager stated twice that the recall had been performed improperly by the first dealer. he stated further, that had the recall been performed properly, the steering would not have locked up on the vehicle. cheverolet customer service denied the recall repair as well as the gm extended warranty even though the failure was identical. *jb

The 2000 chevrolet corvette became undrivable with a locked steering column saturday morning 9/10/05 in scarsdale, ny and was flat bedded under gm roadside assistance warranty to curry chevrolet, the closest open chevrolet dealer. the steering column lock issue is subject to a recall issued by gm/chevrolet (#04006a). in addition to the recall, the car is also covered under an extended warranty by gm. the recall was performed by another dealer this summer (less than 90 days), and chevrolet now refuses to diagnose or repair the car at its expense, even though the dealership service manager stated twice (2), including in a conference call to gm executive offices, that the recall had been performed improperly by the first dealer. he further stated that, had this recall been performed properly, the steering would not have locked up on the vehicle. this was confirmed by the local chevrolet zone manager as well. gm records all customer calls and the recorded call is on record. this was confirmed. chevrolet customer service (request 1-361874832 cynthia capps 866-952-4368 x57879) has denied the recall repair, as has gm extended warranty, and the gm executive offices, even though the failure is identical, and exactly as listed in the recall bulletin. gm executive offices and chevrolet customer service have stated that the customer must pay for the recall repairs on his own, since the recall was "performed," even though it may have been performed improperly, as was confirmed by the second dealer. in summary, the car is covered under a gm warranty and the problem disabling the car is the subject of a nhtsa recall, yet chevrolet refuses to properly repair the car (as confirmed by their own dealer) without expense to the customer. *jb

2000 corvette i received a gm recall notice to take the corvette to a qualified dealer and have the recall work done. i had not had any trouble with the car up to that point. after the recall work on the steering column lock was done, i have had nothing but trouble. the digital information center will read, "service column lock", and although the car starts and runs, it will not go faster than 5 mph and the fuel pump shuts off. this defect has left me stranded four times. the first time it appeared, i took the car to tri-county chevrolet, who indicated that mark heitz chevrolet (who had done the re-call work) had not properly performed the recall. within two weeks of tri-county's work, the car is again having the same steering column lock trouble. this is really strange, since the steering column isn't locked. this is aggravating; this car had a $ 47,514. sticker price and can't be depended on. what's really maddening, i never had a bit of trouble out of the car until the recall work was done on it. the corvette is now sitting on a trailer and on it's way to tri-county. *jb

I have a 2000 chevrolet corvette with a 6-speed manual transmission that was recalled for a steering column lock problem. ever since the recall service was performed the steering column lock engages, rendering my car inoperable and me stranded in unsafe places. this has occurred 5 times. one of the times, i was stranded out of town, at night, and in a thunderstorm. it took over 5 hours to get a tow truck to my location. my vehicle is at the dealership from which it was purchased with an extended warranty. i e-mailed jim schell at gm, and a gm representative has been assigned, but my car is not repaired after two weeks. i need assistance in getting my car repaired or compensated for my loss of a dependable vehicle. *nm

Dt: the consumer states that he had manufacturer's recall 040006 repairs performed on 2000 chevrolet corvette. since the recall there was a light on the disc, bringing up a code that said to remove key for 10 seconds, the other one service column lock. the owner had not had any problems prior to the recall being performed. this problem was intermittent. the owner had taken the car back to the dealership, the dealer wanted to be paid for the use of the computer on the owner's car. the owner thought that the relay switch that was installed was faulty. the owner contacted the manufacturer and filed a complaint with them. gm said that they were aware that there is a problem, but there was no fix for it. vehicle was shutting the fuel off when the disc displayed the remove key light for 10 seconds. after the light came on. stopped and turned off the car, removed the key from the car and then restarted the car. the owner called the dealer again today. the dealer still wanted to charge for the correction on the car. consumer maintained there should be no charge for recalls that were performed and did not work. consumer stated that prior to recall the vehicle was more unsafe than before. *ak

Steering wheel locked identical to chevrolet recall campaign 04006. when to have it fixed and they forced me to pay $200 to replace lock actuator because that part was not listed on recall. the lock plate was covered. it is obvious that the lock actuator got damaged as a result of inability to un-lock the steering wheel as a result of the recall issue. also chevrolet said they had to replace the part because i had a manual transmission, if it was an automatic all of the parts would be removed and discarded. therefore i should not of had to pay $200. chevrolet case #1-325567474.

C5 corvettes have a problem with the steering column lock malfunctioning and leaving owners stranded or locking the steering wheel while driving. i am one of several owners affected by these problems. i've had the steering column lock while making a slow turn in a residential area, fortunately not resulting in an accident, and was left stranded when the car refused to start because of a column lock malfunction. gm issued a recall to fix the problem and i had the recall performed on my car. however, i continue to experience steering column malufunctions. most recently this week, my car failed to start after displaying error messages on the same steering lock malfunction. was able to get the car to the same dealership which performed the recall, but they were unable to find a problem after running the diagnostics. a second dealership encountered the same result. however, i continue to have intermittent problems.*ak

Steering column locked while car was in motion at approx 15 mph. the problem turned out to be a known issue and was repaired by gm under recall by colonial chevrolet-buick, inc. of talladega alabama. days later the same thing happened again, column locking while in motion, even though gm said the recall would prevent this dangerous malfunction from happening again. furthermore in the process of performing the recall service, colonial chevrolet-buick, inc. damaged and replaced the car's radiator. upon further inspection i found that the radiator was not reinstalled properly and its housing is broken. i am unaware of what possible dangers may be present due to the improperly positioned radiator, and have discontinued use of the vehicle pending further investigation in this matter and the column locking again. following service, the car was driven to a tire shop at colonial's recommendation and then straight home. the car has not left the house since as the second instance of the column locking at speed occured on my home's driveway.*ak

Consumer was traveling 75 mph on the highway and the steering wheel locked up. consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, and it crashed into guard rail and flipped three times, landing in a ditch. upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy. driver sustained head and neck injuries, and was transported to a hospital. vehicle was towed and totaled. *ak

Have 2000 corvette w/ manual transmission subject to recall 04v060000. had 04v060000 recall done at maroone chevrolet in 8/04. electronic steering column lock locked up 10/29/2004 while going about 5 miles an hour in reverse after having the recall performed that was supposed to remedy the problem. car had a previous recall performed 3x in 2002 for the exact same problem which never remedied the safety issue because it kept happening. the steering wheel obviously can lock up while the vehicle is in motion rendering a hazardous condition which gm has failed to adequately address in either of their recall attempts. they need to be compelled to provide an adequate fix that actually solves the problem!*ak *jb

The consumer felt that the remedy for the automatic transmission electronic column lock 04v060000 recall is making it easier for the vehicle to be stolen. when the column lock plate is removed only the transmission shifter is locked. the shifter can be easily unlocked, and without the assistance of the steering lock, the vehicle wasn't secured from theft. the vehicle would like a new remedy found to correct this failure without deactivating the electronic column lock system. *ak *sc

After recall 04v060000 electronic column lock repairs were done consumer was still having the same problems. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

I have a 2000 corvette and the steering column locked-up while driving. the steering wheel will not turn, and the display asks to "service column lock". after 7 hours, i still haven't found a chevy dealer that says they can help. if that had happened a few minutes before when i was on the interstate, i could have been killed. this is a serious problem, and i've gotten nowhere on getting the car fixed.*ak

The steering column recall is not satisfactory. if consumer has a manual transmission they will replace the column, and if the transmission is automatic ,they will remove the entire part, leaving consumer with no theft protection. *ak

Consumer received recall 04 v 060 000 concerning electronic column lock.the steering column failed to unlock when the vehicle was started. dealer was notified. *ak

Steering column locked up and had to have car towed to dealership to have fixed. they told me that this a very common problem with the 2000 corvettes. don't know what it will take for gm to take care of the problem. i guess people will need to die first. i will never buy another corvette!!!!!!!!!!*ak

Steering column locked with the car running. called chevrolet customer service and they stated that my car was not part of the recall and were not helpful in getting the car fixed despite the tremendous safety hazard. *ak

Re: nhtsa id 04v060000. my 2000 corvette steering column locked up and would not release while in my driveway. this failure is supposed to initiate a fuel shutoff to prevent vehicle movement. however, i was able to move the vehicle and drive it up a tow truck ramp for transportation to a gm dealer. fortunately, the front wheels were straight when the column locked up. the problem i have with this situation is that my vin is not listed in the current recall campaign for this type of failure. i was required to pay for the repairs which involved the replacement of the column lock switch.*ak

04 v 060 000/electronic column lock: the steering column did not unlock when the vehicle was started. dealer notified. please provide any further information. *jb

Recall 04v060000 concerning steering column lock locking. mr. darrell young was making this complaint for the above consumer. on three separate occasions when the vehicle was started steering column locked. by pulling the #25 fuse and waiting 10 minutes or more would unlock the steering column. dealer was notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to vin. *ak the consumer believes the vin should be included because the vehicle exhibits the same symptoms as the recall. *nm

The consumer complained of a steering locking problem. in october 2003, she took the vehicle to the dealer and had it repaired. however the problem recurred. the steering locked after the consumer put the key in the ignition and attempted to turn the vehicle on. she was not able to turn left/right. currently, it just completely shut down. the consumer looked on the internet and saw that there was a technical service bulletin, but her vehicle was not included. *ak recall # 04v060000. *sc *jb

I have a 2000 corvette and it has 18,000 miles on it; automatic transmission. i had to have it towed to a dealership yesterday because of a steering column lock making my car not driveable. they were going to charge me $556.00 to fit it. the tow truck driver informed me that last year he picked up 21 corvettes in the south houston area where i live with the same problem and that it would happen to some of them more than once after being fixed. on the internet i found that 127,000 corvettes from the year 1997 to 2004 had been recalled for this problem. the dealership and general motors said that because my corvette was not made at the particular factories noted, that my corvette would not be corvette. after complaining, they said they would go 50/50 with the dealership so i had to pay half of $556.00. i still don't feel i should have had to pay anything. it is obviously a problem in other factories. i plan to write gm a letter with my receipts, etc. to see what else i can do. thank you.

When starting the vehicle at anytime, the steering column locked without warning. a recall( o4v06000) was issued, however the vehicle identification number was outside of the remedy scope. please provide additional information. *jb

Consumer had the same problem as nhtsa campaign #04v060000 vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ecl), when the ignition switch was turned to lock, the ecl prevents turning of the steering system. when the vehicle is started, the ecl unlocks the steering system. dealership indicated there is not recall and did know what the consumer was talking about. *jb

Dt: the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. the contact stated that there was nhtsa recall, campaign 04v060000, regarding the steering column locking: anti-theft device. the consumer stated that the remedy for this recall was not sufficient, and recommended that the vehicles be repaired as the european vehicles were instead of disabling the anti-theft device. the consumer has contacted the service dealer and the manufacturer, and they did offer to repair the vehicle under nhtsa's recall remedy. *ak

After paying for a technician to temporarily fix my locking steering column so i could get my corvette home, i obtained recall information over the internet that said the problem i had was to be fixed with a recall kit. after contacting mauher chevrolet in st. petersburg, fl., i was told that the recall had already been satisfied for my vehicle. the kit includes a plate and a relay bypass that disables the locking mechanism in the steering column. obviously, their info. is wrong because the wheel locks and sometimes stays locked when it's not supposed to. they say there is nothing they can do for me. i am not comfortable driving my vehicle in fear of it malfunctioning while i'm driving and the dealer will not perform the work as they should. my vin number is [xxx], 2000 corvette. please help. *jb updated 07/27/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Steering column lock on my 2000 chevrolet corvette coupe. i bought the car in august 2003 from a local dealer. on tuesday 11/25/03 my car's steering wheel would not unlock after i inserted the key into the ignition. the car started but the steering wheel could not be moved in either direction. since i could not steer the car i had it towed about 5 miles to henderson chevrolet. they said i had two choices. 1) for $498 i could have the problem repaired but the replaced parts could fail causing the problem to occur again, or 2) for $595 the dealer would install a mechanism that would render the steering column lock inoperable. i opted for option 2. on wednesday 11/26/03, after i picked up my car from henderson chevrolet, i called customer service at gm and explained my problem. gm said they would contact gm's service manager for my area and call me back. on tuesday 12/2/03 gm called me. i told gm i had to pay $595 to get my car "repaired." the lady at gm said she would call gm's area service manager again and then contact me on friday 12/5/03. i have my doubts, but even if gm agrees to reimburse me for the $595 repair bill plus the $32 rental car cost, the point is that there's a defect in the car and gm seems unable/unwilling to fix it properly. your web site shows a tsb for this problem and i think there was a limited recall done by gm. henderson chevrolet put my car's vin in their computer but they said my car did not meet the recall criteria to be repaired at no charge. it makes no sense to have to pay any money, let alone $595, to disable my car's theft deterrent system. i would like gm/chevrolet to fix my car, at no charge, so that the steering column lock works properly without having to worry about a future failure that makes steering impossible. gm and their dealers are well aware of this problem and have been for quite some time, but the problem still exists. they must be too busy profiting from customers who have to pay to disable a security feature. *nlm

While pulling into a parking lot steering wheel locked up. driver had the vehicle towed to the dealership for analysis.*ak consumer wasn't driving at the time of failure. *ph

I own a gm chevrolet corvette convertible 2000. the steering column is locked due to a defective steering lock. gm has put our a service/recall for select corvettes manufactured between 1998 and 2000. service bulletin 01044 and service operations dcs 771 i called gm but they say my car is not included in this recall because my vin number was not included even though my corvette is a 2000 model and i am suffering from the same problem as other owners have encountered. please let me know what i can do or if gm can be forced to include my car in the recall as well. thanks tony tsai, md 718-261-9068 *la

Steering column lock actuator failed. was told no recall, but this happens alot on this car and the part was updated for the newer cars so this wouldn't happen anymore. had to have steering lock actuator assembly replaced.*ak

After starting vehicle steering column lock will not disengage.

I own a 2000 corvette with 15,000 miles and have twice within one day had my steering wheel not unlock upon starting the car. went to a corvette shop for help was told its a common problem with corvettes and that i should pull the steering wheel clockwise while inserting the key into the ignition, it worked. my question is there a permanent fix for this problem, i understand that it is a common problem concerning corvettes. *jb

The steering mechanism locked up while the vehicle was parked. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for repair. the manufacturer was called to inquire about a similar problem which was under recall. the manufacturer told the consumer that his car was not covered under that recall due to vin. *nm *nm
