We have classified the 215 complaints from 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
Driving on a mountain road with many curves. i went to pass a slower vehicle. audible and dash light went on at the same time as power steering failed. dash said "power steering". steering became extremely difficult to turn (obviously no longer "power steering"). i was barely able to steer car back into lane. i had to drive the remainder of the highway, another 26 miles, barely able to turn the steering wheel on this mountain road. absolutely frightening! after car was turned off and on again, warning light cleared and power steering was operational again. previous to this incident, i also had intermittent air bag failure warnings and false flat tire warnings on dash. *tr
I purchased my car in feb.2012 and i have had it maintenanced at my local chevy dealer each and every time were they are supposed to do a 27 point inspection while changing the oil however they have seem to miss a problem with my power steering. while driving my car i am experiencing a sudden loss of power and it is very difficult to steer my car. i drive my car only to work to provide for my family however with this sudden loss of power and difficulties in driving my car i am terrified of having a accident and hurting myself or others due to the fact that it is hard to control the car during these times. *tr
Driving down a gravel road when i had to swerve to avoid an on coming car that was in my lane. the steering seemed to lock up and as a result i hit the guard rail. *tr

having problems with power steering, believing the first in 3/2013..the power steering flashes on dash and stops steering car making it hard to control. was happening randomly at first ,but now 6/2014, it happens daily and is unsafe to drive. on saturday,6/21/2014 it happened 5 times in a 15 mile stretch, and on monday 6/23/2014, it happened 4 times in a 30 mile stretch. you literally have to pull off the road and turn the car off so the power steering can reset electronically. luckily , i was able to do so because it is scary when it goes. this car is an accident waiting to happen, and chevy says this cobalt is not included in the power steering recall. a lot of times i've had to drive a mile or so to find a safe place to pull over and shut the car off...and it happened in a parking lot before when you can't control it! come on gm, fix my car, you built it that way. if this car has the ignition and lock recall, don't you think it is related to power steering! do you want another death on your hands!!!! *tr
Steering wheel makes a lot squeaking noises and crunching sounds when i turn or am going over rough pavment. *js
My girlfriend and i were driving down the interstate early one morning. there was no rain or bad road conditions and prays god hardly any traffic at all. one minute everything was fine and within a split second there was a loud thud below our feet. my girlfriend lost control of the vehicle and we were thrown across the middle of the interstate and slammed into the guard cables which at that point in time the air bags deployed. the guard cables catapulted us back across the interstate were we was finally able to get the car stopped. the first question out of the arkansas state troopers and the local county officers mouths to us was,"what happened to your whole driver side wheel?". the trooper went on to explain that this was obviously not a "blowout" due to the fact there was absolutely no trash on the road or off the road the road they would be consistent with a blow out. that's when we told him the car had been taken to the chevrolet dealership were the car was purchased not 9 days prior to the accident and the wheels and tires and been rotated, the oil changed and an inspection completed on the car and they tried to say everything checked out ok. well now just as a passenger i have 2 fractured vertebrae in my back, cant sleep, had to quit school and i have no idea of which way to turn to get the help i need. friends please be careful driving these cars. please. i feel like this is a chevrolet malfunction or defective part. now what do i do? *tr
The steering wheel locked as i was getting off the highway. so scary!!!! went to local dealer for it to be fixed. this was before recall....have been waiting for at least a half year to get new ignition switch....was also told there will be a steering wheel recall.....have not been taken care of and feel that i'm driving in a death machine. *tr

Vicenza, italy. roads were clear and it was 12am, not many cars were on the road. i was headed to work and as i was coming into a small traffic circle, the car began drifting, i let go of everything and the whole thing shut off: engine and lights. another car was coming in but noticed i was drifting so they slowed down. i was headed into a ramp and tried to stop with my brakes which didn't work. i tried restarting the car but the key was stuck. i tried turning the wheel, but that was stuck. i finally got the car to somewhat slow down with the emergency brake, and barely missed the ramp. i had recently had an oil change and my brakes checked, so i know my car was fine. it later happened again a few months later. very similar situations. i have new tires and had my axles inspected, i know there is something wrong with my car and it is not safe. the most recent one was a few months ago at 0600. i used my breaks because an animal jumped in front of the car. the car slowed down, then the gas wouldn't work, the steering wheel locked and i almost hit another car as i struggled to turn it and the breaks would not work. the car then completely shut off and i was stuck with the car not waning to start. i took it to get inspected again, and thy said it was fine. i don't know who else to contact since gmc here and stateside, and he dealership i purchased it from in the states, are ignoring me. *tr

While driving on the highway at 70mph an alarm went off and the dash information board flashed that the power steering was out. when you turn the car off and restart, the power steering works again. back in 2012, it may work for 30 minutes. that lasted a few weeks. now the power steering goes out in 30 seconds. i checked in 2012 and there was no recall for the power steering. i tried to get the car inspected today and it failed because of the lack of power steering. i checked again with chevy and it still is not recalled even though most cobalts have been recalled for this failure. i don't know why mine isn't on the list. i can't get the car inspected and parts are hard to come by because of the recall. *js

I was just driving along when suddenly a chime sounded and "power steering" appeared on my dash instruments. i had no power steering. i was able to pull over to the side of the road and turn off the car. when it was restarted, the power steering was reset. this problem occurred once on 6/27/12 and then three times on 6/28/12 (once on the interstate at 70 mph). according to websites, this power steering loss is a problem with chevy cobalts and there was a recall in 2010. however, my cobalt vin is not included in the recall for some unknown reason. it should be because, apparently, this is a problem in un-recalled cobalts and could result in a serious accident. when power steering is lost the car becomes very hard to steer and there's not always a place to pull off the road so you turn off the car and restart it. plus, there's no warning. the power steering is lost totally at random at any speed. *js updated 08/22/12*lj the dealer replaced the electric motor. updated 08/22/12

After running multiple errands around town, i pulled back into my work parking lot and as i was slowing down to stop, i heard a faint 'ding' noise and looked down and my display said "power steering" and then my steering wheel locked up! i was glad to be slowing to stop as the wheel would not turn. i turned off my engine and went inside work. after 10 minutes i came back outside to look at the manual to see where the power steering fluid container was inside the hood and start the car again. the power steering problem was gone. and i popped the hood and did not see a fluid container for the ps. i called the dealer as my car is two years old but i had just purchased it two months ago and had only put on less than 1,500 miles. i scheduled an appointment for me today (one day after the incident). the tech who checked me in, told me that there is no ps fluid container to fill, as it is all motor/electronic driven. he said they would look it over and let me know. i did purchase an extended warranty on this vehicle and the vehicle came with a two year certified used warranty as well. the mechanic said it was the power steering assist motor and that they would be replacing it at no charge as i had the warranty. the paperwork states they put a rebuilt ps assist motor into my 2010 cobalt. now after being online and reading multiple years of reviews regarding 2005, 2006 & 2007 cobalt's, i am wondering where does it end? how many more years worth of cars are having these problems? why has a recall not been done on any of these years cars? i drive my car on long family trips as well as many work trips, which is why i got it in the first place to combat the higher gas prices and get better fuel efficiency. but getting into a crash while i am on the road, if this problem occurs again, negates all of that. please do something! *tr updated 08/29/12*l's
I was driving and the check power steering light came on and i was barely able to steer the car. i took it to a chevy dealership in dickson tn and they told me that yes there is a recall for this problem however my vehicle is not included. i have also contacted the gm hotline but was told the same thing. the vehicle is not under warrant now for that problem and i just purchased it about 2 months ago. can't let my teenage daughter drive due to fear that failure will result in an accident and that my insurance company would disallow any claim on this vehicle for an accident due to a recall and steering failure. i don't have any choice but to drive this car as it is my primary source of transportation and can't afford to get it fixed. in closing i want to know why if i am having the same problem that others experienced with steering and resulted in a recall for their vehicles why is my car not included? same problem as them, same part but because it was built after the recall i am stuck - help! *tr

In the middle of driving, the vehicle will shut off and on (multiple times) which affects the fuel and rpm gauges, loss of all power steering, all electrical starts going crazy (locks and unlocks the doors), starts flashing "low fuel" and "power steering" warnings and then car will go into complete lock mode. as of 4/30: has been fixed under the recall issue, however vehicle is still having these problems. *js

I bought this car fairly new. at first there were no problems with it. but after a couple thousand miles i started to hear a rattle noise. i have since taken it to the shop 6 + times. they keep sending me around with their bull crap saying its this, its that, when in fact its most likely the steering recall/problem. when they replaced the steering column it stopped, but only to come back after a couple more thousand miles. *kb
My daughter was traveling on a straight road when the steering became difficult. the vehicle went from side to side moving from the right of the road to the left of the road while fighting the wheel. she was unable to control the car and her arms gave out and she could not fight it anymore and then the car flipped and ended up on its side after hitting a fence and fence post. the rear airbags did not deploy. this car is very dangerous and people need to come forward with this information. something has to be done before more people loose their lives. i could have lost my daughter because of a defect for which i have never rec'd a notice. *jb
The power steering light comes on and makes it hard to turn, it comes on suddenly and go back out after about 1 or 2 minutes. i was told that there is a recall on these cars for that reason but i haven't received a letter yet. this is so dangerous . i didn't know it had electric power steering. *tr

Was driving as usual when all of a sudden the wheels started grabbing to the left, i pulled on steering wheel & then i noticed "power steering" light was on. by then the car had crossed one lane i slammed brakes on because i could not control the steering, & car came to rest in turning lane at which time i called on star, & local sheriffs office. when police arrived to help get car out of middle of road, a very large cop i might say, he was astounded at the difficulty he had at turning wheel so we could move car out of road. when cop #2 came up he was the one that told me that they had problems before with these cars. i googled it, then i pulled the power steering fuse out & luckily it reset computer so i could drive it to dealership to get it fixed. now is next one they install going to be any safer? not from what i have read. owe way too much on car to trade in now or i will be in the hole. so i am driving scared in a 1 year old car. *tr
I have a new 2010 cobalt and i now find that there is a problem with the steering , my cobalt is not part of the power steering assist recall . i started noticing the problem while turning , i seem to loose power steering from time to time and i don't get a warning light . this happens at low speeds as well as at high speeds and when it does happen turning right or left is harder and the steering wheel seems stiff like i say seems like i loose power steering . i had it into the dealer to confirm that it was not part of the recall and they say there mechanics where unable to reproduce the issue so they say there is no problem and they checked the power steering assist and they did not see a problem with it . the tight steering happens on and off and does not seem to follow any pattern . i started noticing this problem at about 15k km . there was a noise in the front end and the gm mechanics says there was a problem with something in the steering column however it did fix the noise but the loss or what seems to be a loss of power steering control still there . *tr

I was driving a 2010 chevrolet cobalt on thursday morning april 17th around 4 am. i was driving on interstate 170 going south. the vehicle was being driven in the left lane going 65 mph. i was approaching the split-off where you can go onto 64 east or west. the cobalt started to veer towards the right. i corrected it back to the left and that's when the vehicle went completely to the right and the steering locked up and i hit the middle divider that divides the ramps exit. the car was then towed and we are currently awaiting inspection.
