We have classified the 14 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
My door lock keep lockimg and unlocking randomly on its own.. dose it worse driving down the road.
Can't open drivers door from inside or outside handles. not safe to drive, if accident occurs how does the emergency personal get you out?
Driver side door wont open, stuck shut. handle feels like nothing is there . cant open from inside or outside. this is very dangerous if was in a wreck or fire. vehicle was in park as these are power locks and you can hear the unlocking sound however door doesnt open.
Rear doors won't unlock.
Driver door wont open form in or outside sometimes and if it does it will not latch properly and open while driving. *tr
This is about the fourth time my 2006 chevrolet cobalt driver side door has been stuck shut. previously, restarting the battery fixed the problem but now the issue appears to be mechanical. it's absolutely ridiculous that i have to climb out of my passenger side door with a fractured spine because chevrolet and gmc cannot engineer a door properly. *tr
Our drivers side door frequently "stops" working. you are unable to open the door with the inside or the outside door handles while the vehicle is in park or shut completely off. the other 3 doors in the vehicle open without issue, but the drivers door refuses to open (and i do not consider having to climb out the passenger side door or play "dukes of hazard" a feasible action). after doing some research this appears to be a common issue with the cobalt and g5. to this effect i am not sure how this has not been addressed with a recall. if i am able to find thousands of results on the issue with a 30 second internet search it has to have been reported. it would seem that this would be a fairly high priority fix due to the risk of someone being trapped inside the car in the event of a fire or some other catastrophe. granted i do not expect to see a recall on this as it is not technically a life or death defect unless you consider the above scenario. just though i would take the time to submit a complaint about a car that seems to have way too many recalls in its history already. *tr
A vehicle in front of my 2006 chevrolet cobalt quickly applied their brakes which caused my daughter to quickly apply hers thus causing her to hit the rear of the vehicle in front of her. the air bags immediatly deployed. my son, who was in the passenger seat, noticed within seconds of the crash that the engine was on fire. he had to quickly unhook both his and my daughters seat belt so they could evacuate the vehicle before the cabin caught fire. once my daughter was able to relax and gather herself and tell me what she had remembered about the accident, she told me that it was very difficult to apply the brakes and it didn't seem like it was stopping as quickly as usual. i ask her if she thought that the car had stalled prior to the accident and she stated that she didn't know what it would feel like to have a car stall while she was driving. i am unsure as to, number one, why the engine caught fire immediatly after a 35mph impact and two, why was it very difficult for my daughter to push on the brake pedal to stop at a time when you need to trust your vehicle the most???? *js
Upon entering my vehicle, the drivers side door opened but would not latch when closed. after examining the door locks, lock buttons, handles both inside and out as well as the stricker and latch, i found that the door latch mechanism was stuck open. i functioned the locks and handles in order to release the latch. they would release but once pressed against the stricker they would again stick. i applied some lub and penetrating oil and this temporarily corrected issue. i had identical issue with passenger door and also issues when attempting to open both doors. one year after initial issue, the passenger door will not open. had to remove door panel to gain access to the latch from inside the door. latch has been replaced. *tr
Issue #1: december 3, 2013 my daughter parked her car upon arriving for work at the upper deck sports bar & grill. she opened her car door and as she brushed her hand across the interior door handle had her hand sliced open by a sharp edge of the chrome. see photo: she was driven to the hospital by a fellow employee. the wound was so deep she required both internal and external stitches to close it properly. due to the severity and location of the wound and her job requirements as a bartender, she was not allowed to return to work for a week. 7 months have passed and we are still waiting payment from the insurance company to pay medical bills nearly $3000 as well as missed wages. issue #2 ? the car my daughter drives is a 2006 chevy cobalt, one of the cars involved in the major recall where 15 people have been killed when the car shuts off while being driven. she has had one incident of this happening already. fortunately it happened on a side street where she could drift off to the shoulder of the road and not on 95 where she drives to and from work. she has received letters regarding the recall but is constantly being told they ( miami lakes chevrolet auto mall) don't have the part necessary to make the repair. the last time, they made an appointment for her to come in and when she got there was told they made a mistake and didn't have the part. they performed a "safety check" on her vehicle and told her that everything looked ok and it was safe to drive until they got the part. to this date, they still claim to not have the part. *tr
I have written at least 1-2 letters to gmc, spoke w/reps for hours for years, reached out to sm, & attempted to handle the issue myself, & i am disgusted & furious at the way gmc has brushed off loyal, paying consumers w/no regard. my vehicle was purchased brand new off of the lot & i loved it. after having mandatory recall work done in 2010, the vehicle was never the same. my passengers were often times frightened by the unfamiliar handling of a 2006: it jerked, bucked, cut off, & often times would not cut back on. once, when driving a friend that serves in the military, i went to make a left turn & the car cut out of the turn & turned off. if traffic would have been coming, we both would have died that day. i cried & begged gmc for years that i feared for my life & something was very wrong w/the car. they denied any knowing of my issue & made me pay hundreds after hundreds in diagnostic fees that were fruitless labor. dealers & reps made it seem as if i were crazy & just trying to be problematic instead of honestly addressing my issue & taking me serious. once i finally received recall papers, my car ceased to take any more abuse. the engine has been yanked & knocked to the point of exhaustion & what was once my most prized possession is now a non-moving mass sitting in the driveway. i have accrued a number of speeding tickets due to the spastic speedometer moving out of control (which i took videos of & sent to gmc), scrunched the front of my hood due to the car locking up, & overall ruined my life as my 1st big investment in a genuine product of living left me stranded, literally. i have a copy of at least 1 of the letters that i sent in, the video footages, the links to the sm i addressed chevy, pictures, witnesses, & documentation of invoices on file at dealerships. when i asked black chevy in greensboro for my info, they said it should be linked to vin.please *tr
Door handle won't open from the inside of driver side. i have to roll down my window to open it. this has happened before inside and out when i was under warranty. as well as a whistling noise from my passenger vent and rattling windows. supposedly this was all fixed. except the part for my air vent. now i can't even open my manual door. i have read this is a common problem with my model of car. i feel everything is poorly built. door is rusting out on drivers side. yet, i have take great care making sure it stays clean. but the fact that i can't get out of my door. and it's winter time. is scary. i did not go with electric due to that fact of getting something expensive fixed. in the past. it was temporary. but now it won't work at all. again. before it would happen at times. on either door. getting in or out. but now the driver side won't open from the inside at all. and what if the window is frozen and the passages side won't open either. worried. *tr
Went to get out of car doors were unlocked but would not open. rolled down window doors still would not open. prayed apart door panel can not access actuator. have to climb over seat to get in and out of car. went to take car to inspection today and state of nj said they would not inspect because it is a safety issue and they can not get in and out of my car. called gm today and tried to schedule me am appointment to where i would have to pay out of pocket for and offer no other remedy i turned down and will take to my independent shop as it is a issue which should be recalled for as it's happened to multiple vehicles. *tr
Incident #1: while driving at 55mph on a highway, the driver side door opened without warning. generally, while the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle doors lock automatically. driver was wearing safety belt. driver pulled the vehicle over to shut the door. once parked, the driver side door would not latch shut. after a few moments of messing with the locks and jiggling the door handle, the door latched shut. incident #2: five days after incident one, on april 6, driver side door would not open. owner had to climb through passenger side to access interior driver side door handle to attempt to open the door. however, from the interior, the driver side door would not open. a few hours later, driver side door opens after another attempt from outside. once inside the vehicle, the driver side door would not latch shut. vehicle could not be driven until door latched shut nearly 45 minutes later. incident #1 has happened only once. incident #2 has happened on multiple occasions. as a 2006 chevrolet cobalt owner, i feel this is a safety issue that should carefully be looked into. after researching quick fixes for this issue online, i've found hundreds of very similar cases in which all involve 2006 chevrolet cobalt driver side door issues with opening, not opening, and latches. in some instances, the window would not roll down when unable to open the door. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that both the passenger and driver's side doors would not open when the doors were unlocked. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic. the mechanic stated that the interior and exterior door latches would active normally but the locking mechanism malfunctioned and caused the door not to open. the mechanic replaced the entire door locking mechanism. the failure mileage was 129,000.
The power locks suddenly do not work as usual. usually, all the doors are locked when i drive the car while they are unlocked when i park the car. now, there is no response of each door when i shift the car to park or drive. i hear some tick sound when i push the brake, which is not there when the locks work well. sometimes it is very hard to move the power steering when i park the car. *tr
2006 chevrolet cobalt doors won't open from either the inside or the outside after rain. the handle moves, but the door won't open. this affects both passenger and driver doors, but fortunately hasn't yet affected both at the same time. when this happens, we can only get out of the car by the one working door. it takes days before the door works again. we're concerned about being trapped in the car in the event of an accident, fire, etc. we had the door lock/latch replaced, but the same problem still occurs. *tr
Unable to open driver side door from the inside or the outside. i can unlock the door with no issues, but the door itself will not open. have to climb in and out the passenger side of the car. have seen a lot of complaints about this same issue on townhall-talk.edmunds.com. *tr
I arrived at work yesterday only to find i couldn't exit my car through the driver's door. i manually tried unlocking it, but it still did not open. i proceeded to climb out of the passenger seat. that door would not close all the way. i thought the seat belt was stuck in the door. it turns out the latch didn't allow enough space to catch the door. after 5 minutes of pushing the latch and trying to get the door closed, it finally was able to close. i just purchased this car (used) 2 weeks ago. my first car!! i wish i had bought a honda! today i was going to run errands on my day off. this time the passenger door wouldn't latch. i have no way of securing the door closed since it is a 2 door vehicle. the car is sitting in my parking lot, unable to be driven due to the safety feature (or lack there of!) of the passenger door potentially flying open on me while i'm driving. have seen many complaints on this vehicle. looks/rides nice but not worth the money or headache. still haven't discovered a recall regarding this issue. might be trading this in on a new car, different model/make! *tr
The plastic supply on the modular reservoir assembly has cracked on my 2006 cobalt. fuel is leaking from the area. the crack is causing gas to leak to the ground. my mechanic has said this could lead to my vehicle catching on fire. it appears that cobalts in other areas of the country have been recalled for this same issue. i'm wondering why all cobalts have not been recalled as i have heard/seen many other '06 cobalt owners in others states are having the same issues. *tr
Have been told various times i need new struts and shocks. i think this is ridiculous seeing as though i have do not have many miles on my car and the year of my car. dealerships have told me that it does not make sense that a car a 2006 and with low miles on it should need shocks and struts right now. i have had nothing but problems with this car since i paid it off. wheel baring, shocks struts, problems getting key out of ignition, headlights and tail lights leaking water into it, slve cylinder and master cylinder, fuel pump. i will never buy a chevy again! *tr
This vehicle is not safe to drive and was not built right. the manufactures knew for many years that the chevy cobalt 2006 would have a leaking gasoline system, and they kept this faulty defect to themselves for many years before bring this issue to the customer. i was driving the vehicle leaking gas for a few years unit the crack was large enough for me to smell it, while not driving, the ignition switch; with the key in it while the car was in park has started the car engine without turning the key. the key wont come out of the ignition switch. the car has turned off on me on the freeway more than 9 times. the car turned off on me going in reverse, couldn't control the brake and steering power to move out of the pole . while driving in the freeway i have had to quickly react; putting my emergency lights on and praying to god a car doesn't hit me, while with the left had side is quickly waving at the vehicles coming from behind to stop. please help me. i have two children and im tired of being exposed to the dangers of this m defected life threatening vehicle. Door will not shut, than door will not open, than door opened while driving down street. *tr
Please have a safety investigation on this. i just came home from work and parked my car on the driveway. i noticed that when i tried to get out of the car, the door won't open.. i tried to open it from the inside and outside handle but the door still won't open...i was wondering how this could have happen when my car has never been into an accident and it was on the low 32k miles. i've done some researching online and found that a lot of people are experiencing the same problem with their cobalt from model 2005 and up. this should really be a major safety concern! anyone could get into an accident while driving this defective car and couldn't get out because at any given time the driver side door would fail.. please investigate.... *tr
2006 chevrolet cobalt. consumer writes in regards to ignition switch and other vehicle problems and unsatisfactory customer service at dealership. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle would not shut off for about 10 minutes after she switched the ignition to the off position and removed the key. the consumer stated while driving, the vehicle suddenly ran out of gas. there was no warning. the very same day, she received a recall notice in the mail regarding an issue with the fuel pump. also, the consumer discovered the batter exploded, when an odor began to come inside the vehicle. also, the engine light illuminated, the ac and heat did not work, the dash lights worked occasionally, the transmission was slipping and the interior was falling apart. *jb the vehicle overheated, the ac compressor failed. while driving on the highway, the vehicle stalled. then something went wrong with the battery and toxic fumes from the battery in the trunk were being sucked into the vehicle. the consumer exited the vehicle, opened the trunk and hot battery acid was all over the place. updated 09/08/14
The drivers side door will not open. both the inside and outside door handle do not work. for 2 days, i had to climb out of the passenger door. after 2 days, i unlocked my door and heard a popping sound from the door. whatever is jamming up finally released. it's a safety danger because of the risk for an accident. the driver/occupants could be trapped in the car. this has occurred 2 separate times, both lasting for about 2 days. *tr
Trunk of the vehicle has collected water. my spare tire was not available when needed during the winter because it was frozen to the bottom of my trunk. the water collected is so excessive that enough of it was able to cover my spar tire and freeze it. water comes up through both wheel wells and does not drain out. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated the front passenger door fractured and she was unable to open the door from the exterior of the vehicle. the vehicle was not yet taken to the dealer for repairs. the failure and current mileages were 26,297.
2006 chevrolet cobalt drivers side door will get stuck shut not allowing the door to open from the inside or outside of the car causing the driver to have to crawl through the passenger door. after door released and was able to be opened door handle became stuck not allowing the door to close properly and flew open while driving around a bend at 20 mph. the position in which the handle becomes stuck seems to switch between not allowing the door to open and not allowing the door to close properly. *tr
On june seventh, 2010, i was driving on the i-95 expressway. suddenly, i lost the control of my car which was hit by another car driven for reymy w. portes (crash report # [xxx]). on february 21th, 2011, my husband, [xxx] had similar accident with his 2008 chevy cobalt. the fact that both crashes were so similar made dubious about our responsibility on them. on december 12, 2011 my husband presented a complaint to f. h.s. m. v. d. m. s. (complaint # [xxx]), on december 16, 2011 its answer was: ?your complaints do not fall within its jurisdiction. dejected, he didn?t any more action. i have just received from gm a warning about a defect which relates to motor vehicles safety exists in 2005-2007 model year (my) chevrolet cobalt, then i read on tv news, and internet, that gm issued that it's possible that the air bags might not deploy if there is an accident?. in this moment we realized that both the 2006 and 2008 chevy cobalt air bags? did not deploy, regardless both vehicles crashes were on front bumper and maroone collision center charge to allstate the amount of $4183.16 to repair my car. we have received a significant amount of letters from lawyers, as well as allstate insurance dealing with injures damages and monetary compensation. allstate paid to mr. portes the sum of $3 000, consequently our allstate insurance premium was raised substantially. this entire situation had caused stress, economic problems and lack of confidence in both my wife i. because both crashes happened in the afternoon rush hour, i-95 traffic was crowded and slow, but in other conditions and as consequence of air bag malfunction my wife and might have died. for the reasons explaining above, i, the writer, demand from gm a monetary compensation for the psychological, legal, and monetary problems caused by my car malfunction. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Driver side door won't open at all no matter what i do . *tr
Began driving on to highway. between the shift from 3rd to 4th gear, the clutch pedal depletes completely and does not return. after towing the car to a dealership, we find the firewall is broken. when a new firewall was put in it was noticed that the part of the firewall was modified and reinforced. i still have the old part to show proof of the change made. *tr
My daughter's finger was cut when the chrome plating on the driver's inside door handle started flaking off and became extremely sharp. *tr
For a few months, i had been hearing a noise coming from the front of my car when turning or hitting a small bump. when i took it to my mechanic, they immediately knew the cause. the lower control arm needed replaced. they have seen a lot of this problem on the 06 chevy cobalt. both sides needed replaced and the car only had 50,000 miles. *tr
Crash car ,steering became difficult to handle. ran off road to right hit bank and flipped car several time. car was going a little fast, but this car should have been able to handle the speed. one guy had a injury to his arm and the other was thrown from the car leading to his death. *tr
I have had to replace my fuel injector, my ignition switch, and now my steering has gone out. all where while driving and warning light comes on. i keep my car well maintained, recently got a mileage service done. i have seen many post on these issues. what is being done about recalls. *tr
My 2006 chevy cobalt has had several instances of the doors not latching and/or not being able to be opened. the driver door, seems to do ok, as long as i keep it lubed. currently, the rear passenger door will not latch. when i look at the latch, it seems to be moving freely, yet will not latch. it has been tied closed with a rope, since october 2013, as it will cost hundreds, just to have it looked at. it has manual locks, so is not an electrical issue. i need to find a way to fix it myself, but cannot figure out what the problem is. *tr
The driver's side door gets stuck closed - sometimes if i 'snap' the outside handle it will eventually open, but it feels like i'm going to break it doing this. by 'snap' i mean to pull on the handle and let it snap back into position. i've been stuck inside the car and had to have someone 'snap' the outside handle to get the door opened for me. i've had incidents where i've had to crawl across to the passenger side to get out. this is not easy because you have to lift the console up in order to get by... and the console doesn't latch and everything falls out... not to mention i'm a little chubby and it's really hard for me to do in the first place. this problem is dangerous to potentially be locked in your car - what if i was in an accident?! what if i needed to get out of my car in a hurry for what ever reason!? i have been locked in 5 times and and locked out at least once daily for the last month. this has been happening on and off pretty much since i got the car in 2007, and every time i have taken it in to get looked at, the car dealership says they've never hear such a thing (i've brought it at least 3 times for this reason), and that they can't seem to get it to do it when they have it... again... this is a dangerous thing... not just an inconvenience - which it certainly is when the door won't close from this, but at least i'm not in it when that happens
I was at a red light, the light turned green i started to go and the person in front of me in a pt cruiser stopped short and i hit him in the rear causing so much damage to my front end. how on earth can they give this car even 1 star for front end collisions, if i was going any faster i would have been killed! the entire bumper, hood, the structure that holds the bumper is ruined and my compressor to the air conditioning as well, this was all at the speed of approx 2 to 4 miles per hour! the airbags never deployed either, showing that this was not a heavy impact, however this car just crumpled and i am worried for my saftey driving in my car. i go to college and then to work and i am scared that if someone were to hit me i don't even have a chance in this car that claims to have good impact results. there was no damage to the other car and i was the one that was injured, my back and both knees. i would like more information on this car and the results from minor fender benders as they call it to see if maybe there is something wrong with the structure of just my car, or all the 2006 cobalt 4 door sedans.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that when the doors are locked, he cannot exit the vehicle unless he pulls the knob. the current and failure mileages were 669.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact is dissatisfied that her vehicle is only one year old and is under recall # 07v014000 (structure). she received the recall notice in march of 2007. the contact has already had the upper steering column replaced, but is still hearing a clumping noise. she has notified two dealers in her area, but neither have called her back because they have not received the parts for the vehicle. the contact has waited over a month to have the recall repair work performed. the vehicle has been at the dealer since february. the engine size was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 24,000.
Today, after a hard rain, the sunroof leaked again... soaking the headliner from the sunroof forward, again. *nm
After a pretty good rain during the day on october 27th, my fiancee and i got in my car and noticed the headliner was sagging. upon touching it, i found it was soaked from the front of the sunroof, all the way forward. i did some research online and found this to be extremely common in cobalts. i'm taking it to the dealer today in hopes of repair. *nm
I purchased a 2006 cobalt ls level 2 used in october of 06. shortly after the purchase my car started a moderate tone whistling and my heater started making a clicking noise which both are very annoying. i have brought my car to the dealership whalen chevrolet in greenwich ny many many times and all they ever say is the noises are normal there's nothing they can do about it. shortly after those problems came about my wipers stopped working in a storm for no apparent reason, when i brought the car to the dealership for this problem they blamed it on me saying i was mis-using my wipers ,apparently your not supposed to use them. within days of that problem my car started to bump when i'd touch the brakes, once again i brought the car to the dealership and what do you know the dealership said it was my fault and the brake rotors needed to be planed down. still to this day the car is whistling the entire time it runs and the heater is clicking away like always,it is apparent to me that this is no replacement for the lack luster cavalier,it is the cavalier it's just prettied up a bit. to this point the shabby engineering of this car has cost me well over $500 in repairs & diagnosing to try and solve a problem the gm certified mechanics at whalen chevrolet in greenwich ny can't seem to figure out---oops i mean it's supposed to sound like it's falling apart. *tr
I have a 2006 chevorlet cobalt and i purchased it with 18 miles on it and on 23july2009 i find myself not able to exit the car from the driver door keep in mind its only a 2door car and i have kids i am being told by the car dealership that i need a new door i have never been in an accident so i don't think i should have to pay for the car to be repaired i am having to pay for a rental car and i just don't feel that it is right this should be a safety hazard. *tr
