Re: nhtsa action number: pe10005 , recently informed by our mechanic that we have a fuel leak somewhere above the gas tank near the fuel pump. reviewed web and discovered this safety recall and fail to understand how it can be limited to the states described within the recall. i live in kansas with summer time temperatures in the 90-100 degrees routinely. i also understand the repair cost can be substantial, how can it be fair for my neighbor in oklahoma to have this repaired by gm yet i may have to endure a 300 - 600.00 expense, after all safety is safety. *tr

Besides prior problems with my 2006 chevy cobalt including replacing the motor and manual transmission, i recently noticed a strong fuel odor when i was driving my car or after i had parked. i noticed the smell on june 29, 2011. i called my mechanic on july 1, 2011 and he scheduled me for service on july 5, 2011 following the independence day holiday weekend. he looked at the car and noticed there was a crack in the mra or modular reservoir assembly which had caused the fuel pump to leak. he stressed the danger i had been in while driving my car due to the highly flammable nature of the fuel leaking from my car. he needs to replace the fuel pump which will cost several hundred dollars. after doing some research on the problem, i found that gm had recalled many 2006 chevy cobalts for this specific reason. i called the customer assistance line and spoke to [xxx] at extension 12783 who told me my car was not included in the recall nor is the problem covered under any warranty or special coverage. it is not a coincidence that my car is suffering the same problem that many 2006 chevy cobalts were recalled for. chevrolet should cover the costs for the repair of the vehicle they sold me. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My 2006 chevy cobalt has developed the same fuel system crack/leak issues as described in the recall. however i do not live in any of the states listed so my dealer says its not covered. how can it be recalled in certain states and not others? seems to me a defect is a defect regardless of where the car is registered! now i have to pay for a repair or risk a fire. *tr

My vehicle began to smell like gas but there was no sign of a leak. a friend who is also a fleet technician, looked at the vehicle for me and found there was a small leak near where the fuel lines connect to the fuel sender at the top of the gas tank. in trying to get an estimate of the cost of repairs, i found that numerous people have the same problems with this make, model and year. there is even a recall for this vehicle 09v419000, but only if i live in arizona or nevada. it seems we are being penalized for not purchasing our vehicle in the right state. i found the numerous complaints at this site: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/chevrolet/cobalt/fuel+system

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt that has a gas leak resulting from a defective fule pump module. there is a special coverage adjustment (#09275a), however the dealer and gm say that my car does not qualify for this coverage. i have the bulletin in hand and it identifies the bracketed vin numbers, and my vin number falls within the bracket. i had my vehicle into the dealer who identified my gas leak resulting from the fuel pump module, which needed to be replaced but they will not allow me coverage under this special coverage adjustment. *kb

We experienced the same problem described in nhtsa campaign number 09v419000 on our 2006 chevy cobalt (vin [xxx]). we smelled a strong fuel smell and took it to the dealer (sands chevrolet glendale az) for repair under the recall. we were denied service under the recall even though the plastic supply port was cracked and leaking fuel as described in the recall. we were charged $673.48 to repair the dangerous defect plus $134.24 for another fuel filter they said we needed. due to the potentially deadly defect we had no choice but to pay for the repair. if the dealer was telling the truth then it seems the scope of the recall needs to be expanded. please look into this. we don't want to see drivers of the 2006 cobalt exposed to this potentially deadly defect and fire hazard. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
