Recently reported STEERING problems on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Power steering column and motor replaced for over 1,000 dollars also bushing. engines stalls when pressing gas and brake pedal. key wouldn't come out ignition and my car wouldn't stay in park. had to pay a locksmith to remove the key. headlights keep having to be adjusted. wheel bearing and struts need to be replace but i don't have the money for all of these repairs for a 2005 vehicle. its to many problems for such a newer vehicle. what is chevy going to do about this, how many more people have to die or get injured. *tr

My power steering continues to stop working while driving. this has just started to happen on a regular basis. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy cobalt. i am the original owner. about a year ago i had a problem with the power steering turning off in parking lots while i made full turns of the steering wheel. now i have a problem with the power steering randomly turning off while i'm driving. its really random some times it seem to never want to stay on and sometimes it seem to not affect my car at all. scary that it is inconsistent. i'm awaiting to hear back from the dealership. *tr

I have a 2005 cobalt ss with 62k on it and my powersteering went out. *tr

The power steering goes out on my 2005 chevy cobalt on a frequent basis making the car very hard to turn and unsafe to drive. i am concerned that one day i will not be able to control the car and cause and accident with serious injuries or worse. i see there are hundreds of other incidents of this nature and the list continues to grow on a daily basis. please have gm issue a recall and provide the needed repairs before more people experience collision and injury or death. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 45 mph the power steering light illuminated and within seconds the power steering failed. the steering wheel did not shake or make a noise. she turned the vehicle off so that the steering wheel would reset and within five minutes the same thing happened. the steering failed a total of three times. she contacted the dealer. the dealer stated that if the motor was electrical and there was a problem they would need to replace the motor. the dealer replaced the power steering motor at the owners expense for $391. the failure mileage was 48,418. the current mileage is 48,847. the dealer informed the consumer the entire electrical power steering motor needed to be replaced at a cost of $391.00. they also stated that the power steering column was also making noise and needed to be replaced. updated 05/12/10.*jb

I was running an errand earlier this afternoon under normal driving conditions (the weather was clear and the temperature was about 45f) when my driver information center warned of a power steering problem. at the time i was on a straight road only going about 25mph, so when i got to the upcoming stop sign, i shut down and restarted my car. i drove another 5 miles to pick up some food and there was no problem up to that point. on the remaining mile from the food stop to my home, the power steering went out twice. i was on a straight road going about 35mph the first time, and the second time i was pulling into my parking spot. i have not driven my car since then, and at this moment i plan to take the car to the local dealership monday (if they are not closed for president's day). the reason i am reporting this to nhtsa sort of prematurely is because this seems to be a very common occurring problem based on what i found after looking up 'chevy, cobalt, power, steering' on a search engine. one article alone had over 810 comments, all owners of the same car with the same problem. *tr

I was riding down the highway and the power steering went out three times and i can not control the vehicle.. i felt that my life and family was endangered. i know i am not the only one with this problem. *tr

Frequent loss of power steering in 2005 cobalt. happens nearly every day without notice and at different times. can be very dangerous if traveling at high speeds. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt, for the last month or so the power steering has stopped working lots of times, sometimes it goes out a couple times a day. other times it don't go out for a week. i am an older lady an i thought with gas mileage the cobalt would be a great car for me. now i am scared every time i drive,as i am afraid the steering will go out and cause me to wreck. i can't afford to have this worked on . want to know if there will be a recall as on the tv they said there were lots of cobalts doing this. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt power steering failure. we purchased this car a few months ago and it has begun to have major problems. the car is inside of the timeline for power train warranty, but is over miles. the power steering light comes on followed by complete power steering failure, engine stalling, rough shifting, strange movements of the speedometer needle, check engine light comes on. power steering loss happens while driving and the engine has stalled while driving. the engine also stall when braking. this nearly caused an accident today and the situation is getting worse. my wife and i drive our 1 year old child in this car and my wife is pregnant. we cannot afford another vehicle and may not be able to repair this problem as numerous reports on the web indicate that this is a extremely common problem that is very expensive to fix. this problem happens several times each day. *tr

Power steering light comes on, power steering goes out, all display lights begin going off and on, speedometer needles go crazy, clicking noise in dash, car sputters when stopping and jerks real hard when beginning to resume driving after stopping. all of these things happen at the same time, not always just off and on, never know when its going to happen. had recall on power steering assist motor, had that replaced at 70,558 miles, starting having same problems again. had steering column, shaft and link replaced at 73,117 miles. car seemed ok for about a month and then again at 73,900 miles same problems are happening again. contacted gm, was told the recall was done so anything else that happens now is my responsibility. have seen 100's of other comments from cobalt owners having the same problem with vehicle and gm. there is obviously more of a problem with these vehicles than just the power steering assist motor. something more should be looked into and done with this issue. it is and or can be a very dangerous problem when occurring (steering going out at anytime) like i've seen on many comments from others, does someone have to die before something is done about this problem? gm states that this vehicle has a 5 star safety rating but yet they don't want to fix a problem as serious as this. i like many others can't afford to keep fixing this problem just to keep having it re-occur. i had to pay out $950 a month ago and like i said before am now having the same problems. i had to borrow money to have the first repairs done and have no way to have it done this time (can't afford it) so now again like i've seen many others comment i have no choice but to drive around in a vehicle that's steering could and will go out at anytime. if there is anything i can do to find out or have done to fix this problem, please let me know. a very concerned and scared driver. thank you! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while the contact was driving 25 mph he noticed that the power steering light appeared on the dashboard, moments later the vehicle no longer had power steering. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 49000.

I was driving my 2005 chevy cobalt when the power steering failed. i was doing 30mph when the warning light on the dashboard went on and i had a hard time steering the car off the road. i turned the car off and then back on and the problem stopped. this has happened twice. my mechanic cant find anything wrong. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet cobalt has a power steering problem. the power steering randomly goes out while driving and the problem has become more frequent. it now occurs within minutes every time i drive the car. this car has an electronic power steering system. it is extremely dangerous to lose power steering while driving, making turns, parking, etc. i have read numerous complaints from other consumers regarding this issue and i really hope that gm issues a recall to fix this problem. it is very difficult to steer the car and at this point i am nervous to drive it at all. thank you for taking this into consideration. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalts powersteering went out while driving on the highway. *tr

Power steering failure. *tr

Sudden intermittent loss of power steering that occur several times a week causes loss of ability to steer car effectively. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt - power steering fails daily after driving for approximately 10 miles. random, loose ability to steer and control the vehicle and i have to shut it off and reset it. this is my teenage child's car and this is a danger to his safety. he cannot even drive the car because it is such a safety concern, i now drive it to work 40 miles one way and deal with it so he can be safe. *tr

My power steering continues to fail 3-4 times a week now. i own a 2005 chevy cobalt and had recently lost my steering in a snow storm. i have contacted gmac, and they informed me there was nothing that they could do, but repair it if necessary @ my expense, seeing as the warranty has expired, and there was no recall on this problem. there is little time lapse between the power steering indicator, and losing the power steering. *tr

1. power steering failure. regular driving. the car beeped and a prompt message appearing saying "power steering". 2. multiple times during a short drive. stopping the car/restarting the engine temporarily fixes it. could lead to intersection crashes because of power steering re engaging/failing mid-turn. 3. new steering column. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet cobalt has power steering issues. i was driving home from a friends home on feb. 8, 2010. the "power steering " light came on and i had very little control of my car, there was no power steering at all. i was almost rear ended on another occasion when the power steering went out while i was making a left hand turn. this is very scary to me , as i have my granddaughter with me when traveling some days. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated whenever he is driving his vehicle the power steering goes in and out. the vehicle had to be turned on and off to be reset. as he was turning the wheels it was very uncontrollable. the dealer had not been contacted or the vehicle taken the dealer for a diagnosis. the failure aileage was 50,000.

My son was driving his 2005 chevy cobalt when the power steering unexpectedly went out. it kept going on and off until he got to work. he had a very difficult time handling the car and almost went into oncoming traffic. the dealership said it would cost $800.00 to repair the vehicle and it is not covered by any warranty's. it is nearly impossible to steer the car and it is not safe. *tr

Two an a half years ago my vehicle started to just turn off randomly while driving, it started about every 4-5 months then about a year ago it started happening about twice a month. i brought my vehicle to the shop and they stated that the problem was the fuel pump. it was replaced since then. i have not had a problem with the vehicle turning off in the middle of me driving. now february 6, 2010 i was driving and the power steering randomly went out. sometimes if i turn my car off and restart it will have power steering again sometimes it does not help. this has been occurring for 2 days now and it happened yesterday 3 times and today 3 times. i was driving through the mountains and almost caused a couple of collisions because of this. i plan on going to the shop tomorrow and i will keep any parts they replace. *tw

Power steering: 2005 chevrolet cobalt ss supercharged (manual transmission). i would like to add my two cents to the complaints on the power steering system in my car, mentioned above. it has not caused me an accident but has caused a few close calls. i have noticed a few things about the failure: -there is an 'overall frequency' with which power steering outages occur, depending on a number of factors i have observed: -turning off and restarting the ignition (even going 80mph on the highway) will immediately fix the issue for a random period of time, based in part on the current 'overall frequency'. -tire wear (resulting in additional surface contact, presumably) increases the frequency of the failure. -warmer temperatures seem to make outages more frequent. -'spirited', high-rpm type driving (my car is the supercharged model) results in more frequent steering system outages...usually with the system failing just after reaching the peak rpm of a given gear, and regardless of whether the car is currently turning. -the system can go days and weeks without failing. it is usually possible to guess how soon the outage will return based on how hard the wheel is to turn once the system has failed. if the wheel is very hard to turn, based in part on the factors above, then restarting the car will only correct the issue for a very short period of time (sometimes as little as 15-20 seconds). if the wheel is easier to turn when the steering is out, the system stays active for considerably longer periods (perhaps 1 hour) before failing again. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet cobalts power steering continues to keep going on and off. i have talked to many other cobalt owners and this is happening to them as well. the other night i was driving on the highway during some snowy weather and my car slid out of control and because my power steering was off it took a very long and hard time to get it back under control. i ended up sitting sideways on the off ramp. completely dangerous that the power steering goes off anytime it wants a serious accident is going to occur and gm has done nothing about it. i called them to tell them about the problem and if they were going to fix it for me as this is something that i think should be covered by them. i said they should have a recall on these cars and she said that recalls are for safety reasons. i am sorry but since when has power steering going off whenever it wants while making a turn, while going 100 or 50 not a safety issue? i am frustrated and annoyed with gms attitude about this problem, i know of hundreds of people who have called to complain and they will do nothing for us and their !@#$% cars. i don't have the extra money to fix their problem. i feel like it shouldn't even be a question of a recall. this is a very serious and scary problem and i am afraid that someone's life will be at risk because of this. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt, 52000 miles, power steering goes out while driving at random times. must restart engine to get it to work. sometimes it stops every few minutes. please advise if there is a recall pertaining to this issue, as it could easily cause a crash. *tw

05 chevy cobalt - power steering goes out. bought the car two weeks ago and the steering comes and goes. reading the web it sounds like this is a known problem but gm has not done anything yet. *tr

Out of the blue the car began missing, quitting and unable to steer or turn the car has a serious loss of power. the car has been checked and rechecked with no answers and with the previous complaints and recalls that are listed i am requesting information on the specifics to get the car fixed without the cost to me.*tr

The power steering on my 2005 chevy cobalt keeps giving out. it becomes difficult for me to steer. i have to stop the car and wait about 30 minutes so that it can reset itself and after a few minutes of driving it gets hard again. i have small children in the vehicle and i am afraid that i may lose control and get into an accident. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt. power steering failure. highway speed. after seeing the numerous sites and support boards with this same issue i had to have the system replaced. it was not safe to drive. this came from the gm dealer where i had the car fixed. if the car was not paid for next month i would drive it to a gm dealer and they can have it!!! *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt in which the power steering will go out randomly. the first time it happen i was a couple of weeks ago , 01/28/2010, on the highway, and i almost crashed. i thought it might be a fluke, but it happens everytime i drive, and i am now forced not to drive it for obvious safety reasons. it is extremely dangerous and there is no reason for it to be happening at this point in the car's life. i have done research and found this is a very common problem for this model. *tr
