We have taken our daughters cobalt to the dealer 3 times because the power steering keeps going out. it is placing our daughter is serious danger. we have spent close to $1000.00 on this issue. it went out in december and we took it back to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong with it. it went out again today. *tr
My wife and i got into the car, we started to pull off from her parent's house and before we made it off their street, the car chimed and "power steering" was displayed on the dash. the power steering immediately became extremely difficult to manage, as we almost got into an accident on the street. it chimes as soon as we start the car and begin pulling out of our driveway, or pulling away from anywhere we are. it takes maybe 5 seconds from the time we start the car before we hear the chime. it is immediate. we have researched this online and found that gm has done a recall, finally, on these cars due to the malfunction of the chip for the power steering. we are contacting our local chevy dealer today to see what steps we need to take next to fix the problem. we have only had this car for 2 years now. *tr

Power steering failure in my 2005 chevy cobalt. *tr
Power steering failure
In october 2008 while driving 15 mph my 2005 chevy cobalt had a power steering failure which almost caused a collision with another vehicle. my vehicle jumped a curb, luckily no one was hurt. there was only 41 ,223 miles on the vehicle. i had to tow the vehicle to a gm chevrolet dealership where they informed me that i had to pay $773.81 to replace the steering column, because it was out of warranty. on march 3, 2010 after having accumulated 62,522 miles driven on my vehicle. i while driving to the store, started having steering problems. i noticed that the steering was becoming difficult to turn. then i became aware (while watching the news that night ) that a recall on the electric steering motors for 2005 chevy cobalts was issued. i contacted gm chevrolet but was told i had to wait to receive a recall letter on my vehicle. i informed gm chevrolet of my previous steering problem in 2008, but was offered little assistance. i was informed that if i wanted the vehicle inspected i would have to pay a diagnostic fee and i would have to pay for any repairs performed. i was made to wait a month for a recall letter. in my circumstances i think requiring me to pay for a diagnostic and repair on a vehicle which has a recall is unfair, considering i had a previous problem steering in 2008, before a recall was issued. i received the recall letter yesterday, and had the vehicle repaired today, but i couldn't drive the vehicle for the last month, because of the steering problem. now they are stating that they will not reimburse me for the original repair that was done on 10/30/2008, even though another gm dealership informed me that it was the same problem, although in 2008 they replaced the whole steering columns which was the norm, but now the are correcting the steering problems by replacing the electric steering motor. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while the contact was traveling at a speed of 60 mph he noticed that the power steering light had appeared on the dashboard and at the same moment the vehicle suddenly became very difficult to steer. the dealership was contacted and informed the contact that nhtsa recall 10v073000 was not official and no repairs could be made on his vehicle. the vehicle had not been diagnosed and the failure has occurred on 6 different occasions. the failure mileage was at 45800 and the current mileage is 47800.
I had severe power steering failure and my map sensor is also defective even though it has been replaced twice. i have a very low mpg its a 15mpg at best. my car also accelerates without my foot on the pedal and i have had severe brake failure , to the extent that i have had to use my hand brake to stop. *tr
I previously submitted a complaint on the power steering on my 2005 chevy cobalt. i had the power steering motor replaced before recall and was told that i can get a refund on the repair. now i have a rattle when driving in the steering column area and concerns me. i wonder if driving with the power steering issues i had caused more damage to my car. it feels very loose and i am concern i may loose control of my vehicle. *tr
Vehicle would not turn right steering issue. as a result the car continued straight, over median, over 2 curbs before driver could stop vehicle just shy of gas meter. filed complaint with gm > the dealership where i purchased the vehicle informed me of a recall on gm cobalt and the parts to fix problem will not be available. and it appears that is what happened why the vehicle would not turn. and my vehicle cannot be repaired. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy cobalt, on march 1, 2010, y car's message center "dinged" and the message "power steering " was being displayed. the tachometer, and speedometer both started jumping up and down, that seemed to stop after a couple of seconds, my steering seemed a little stiffer but nothing really noticeable, a few minutes later, pulling up to a stop light it started jerking like someone was shifting gears hard in a standard, or like the clutch was popping. this is ridiculous, not to mention it scared me half to death, i drive 400 miles to my parents every weekend, and i transport my younger siblings all the time. this is dangerous! and needs to be fixed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge and several warning lights illuminated intermittently. the contact stated that while driving, power steering failed. as a result, the steering became hard to maneuver. the vehicle was not taken to a repair shop or dealer for inspection or repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who stated that the vehicle should be taken for diagnostic. the failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 153,000.
2005 chevy cobalt electrical power steering failure. a couple of beeps and power steering is noted on the dashboard and at the same time you loose complete power steering while driving. has happen twice in the last two days. *tr
I drive a chevy cobalt (2005) which was purchased new. current it's got ~55000 miles on it. this past week i experienced three times sudden loss of power steering while driving - twice on local driveways and once on the freeway. the problem remained on as long as the engine was not shut off. restarting the engine seems to solve the problem temporarily as no one knows when it is going to happen again. i have been a defensive drive so i was able to handle the situations calmly without causing any trouble; but this is dangerous. right now the car is at the gm service center for a checkup and hopefully a fix. apparently there have been over one thousand cases like this. i believe that a recall should be issued for safety concerns. thank you. *tr
2005 chevrolet cobalt. consumer states power steering malfunction *tgw the consumers wife was driving, when all of a sudden the steering became difficult to steer. after she pulled off the road and re-started the vehicle, the issue was resolved temporarily. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the consumer was informed the power steering assist motor needed to be replaced. the dealer also stated the vehicle was not a part of the recall. *jb
I am not able to get my key out of the ignition of my 2005 chevy cobalt ls. this has been a persistent problem since i bought the car in 2006 (was a rental). up until today (2/27/10) i've always been able to get it out eventually. now however, my car will not start - it just clicks, and my shifter won't move. the car doesn't recognize that it's in park. after doing some research online, it appears many people have had this problem. the conclusion is that there is a defect in the transmission shift cable. please see this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfb6y7_zkx0 this is not the only problem i've had with this car: power steering failure after about 45,000 bad wheel bearing after about 50,000 cd player replaced because it wouldn't eject cds (this is still a problem even though the dealer replaced it with the same manufacturer's model) faulty glove compartment. i feel this model of car is dangerous and should be recalled after all the problems people are experiencing with it. *tr
Power steering fails often. we looked to see if the power steering fluid was low and found out nothing to fill. it is all electric powered. it is very difficult to drive. young daughter driving car to work and college. very concerned for her safety. took it to dealer had the steering motor assembly replaced at a cost of 377.00. the car has only 59,000 miles on it. *tr
Power steering went out while driving on the high way. luckily i am a strong man and was driving and not my wife. the front passenger seat belt is now no longer usable due to the fact that it is stuck buckled together for the 2nd time. it can no be detached. this is a safety hazard. and now i must replace this seat belt and buckle. *tr
Own a 2205 chevy cobalt and the power steering keep going out. have to turn off car and then restart and sometimes this works, most times not. very expensive to fix. *tr
Power steering failure on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt. no prior problems, just happened suddenly. occurs weekly. receive "power steering" warning on dash display and lose all power steering. *tr
1. normal driving conditions 2. power steering failure randomly occurs causing loss of control. 3. shutting off car and restarting allows for temporary resolution. *tr
1) driving at a low speed 2) power steering message appeared on dashboard. lost power steering completely. 3) restarted car. *tr
My 2005 chevrolet cobalt all of a sudden started having issues with the power steering. it would go in and out until it finally got to hard to drive. i took into the dealership and was told that the power steering unit had gone bad. i had it repaired to the tune of $400. imagine my surprise when i went on line to find out that this very problem is being investigated by the national highway and safety commission. i was really upset with the dealership and with chevrolet because i was never notified that it was a problem. i would like to have this investigated further. i feel that this is unfair to consumers for dealerships to charge us for issues the manufacturer should take responsibility for. in addition, the gear shift mechanism is also faulty. sometimes it is almost impossible to get the key out of the ignition. this has occurred before, resulting in having the whole mechanism replace in november 2008 and now it appears that it may have to be replaced again. when you put the car in park, it does not go all the way into gear and you have to keep putting the gear from neutral to park until it release the ignition. *tr
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) this is the second time my 2005 chevy cobalt power steering went out on me in the past year. the first time i had the whole steering column replaced and it cost me 400.00 for a used part and labor (a new part was way too expensive). that was april 2009. this past week it has gone out again, and i do not have the extra money to get repaired at the time. when i start my car the power steering is fine until i drive about a block or two then the "power steering" alert comes up on the dash board and it will not fix unless i shut off the car and start all over again. but this only correct the problem for another block or two. We own a 2005 chevy cobalt and the problem is the power steering light comes on while going down the road and the steering locks up and you can't steer the car. this is a very dangerous situation and just wandering what can be done about it. i have also heard that there have been many others with the same problem from the cobalts, wondering why chevy has not done anything about it? thanks *tr
My daughter was driving her 2005 chevrolet cobalt yesterday afternoon and without warning, the power steering failed. after a while, she was able to drive it again, but later that same day, the power steering failed once again. as with the other complainant, she was traveling at a low speed, thank goodness! *tr

I have a 2005 chevorlet cobalt with approximately 76,000 miles. while driving the message display on the instrument panel flashes " power steering" and the car becomes very difficult to control. the steering is extremely tight. if i cycle power the problem resets but recurs almost immediately. this problem continues to happen every time the car is driven. *tr

The power steering on my 2005 chevrolet cobalt suddenly goes out. i have found that if i turn the car off and back on then the power steering will return for some period of time. i haven't had any real accident with it to date, but i can testify that the power steering does go out in chevy cobalts. it's pretty difficult for me to turn the steering wheel when this happens, and i'm a grown man of average strength. *tr

Chevy cobalt power steering. starting about a week ago my power steering would randomly go out, most of the time it happened when the temp outside got above 50. the first time this happened i almost hit a car and ran off the road. i went and had my car fixed friday and paid 500 dollars to have it fixed. i found out today there was a recall being done. i called the chevy dealership and although the recall says its for the cobalt 05 to 10, which mine is an 05, it apparently does not have the vin number of the ones being recalled. i think this needs to be reviewed on what cobalts they are recalling but its really odd how mine only messes up when the temp was over 50. *tr
2005 chevy cobalt...power steering light came on and i lost all steering control...i have a 14 month old son who was in the back seat at the time...this has happened to me 4 times in the past two days. very concerned for mine and my family's safety with this problem. *tr
