We have classified the 1046 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
I was traveling home with one other passenger in the car with me at 35 mph, the car turned off, the steering wheel locked up. i was scared and didn't know what to do. i shifted the car from drive into neutral and then restarted it, then slipped it back into drive... i've never been more scared then when i had absolute no control over my car. im just lucky i didn't panic. this has happened twice to me. i now don't feel safe driving my cobalt and very disappointed this problem has been fixed. to me i don't feel safe driving myself or my family in that car. *tr
While backing car up steering went out. steering wheel would spin around. found out that the lower shaft in steering column and the gear coming out of steering rack separated. had to change steering rack / lower shaft / clock spring. cost $1200.00 if this had happened while driving @ 65 mph with no control things would have been a lot more serious. i have my 24 month old baby in the car most of the time. checked recalls and there seems to be none for this year car, but there is a recall for 2006 with similar problems. *tr
When maneuvering the vehicle my steering wheel seizes up over and over again while making a turn. consequently it must be turned hard to overcome this resistance. often this causes the driver to over steer. it does this repeatedly even when going through the same turn. correcting the over steer is also plagued by these same spots of hard resistance. if you turn the steering wheel while the car is not moving you can feel the same problem. had the front end of the car inspected and those components are in good shape. you can hear a sound coming from the steering column when resistance is felt. the car had safety recall # 10023 repair done on 6/14/2010 at dutch chevrolet in belfast, maine (repair order 25485). i called chevy and they said that the recall repair was warranted for 12 months or miles which ever came first. i have an appointment today 5/1/12 to have it looked at by the same dealer. the representative from chevy said they will follow up on this however they did not offer to cover the cost of the repair. bad enough that the problem is chronic, a real safety concern, but worse yet chevy won't even take responsibility for a lifetime warranty on a recall repair. this is unconscionable. *js the consumer stated he went to the local dealer to have the steering problem diagnosed. it turned out the problem was not directly related to the original repair of the electric steering assist unit after all. rather, the intermediate steering shaft u-joint needed to be replaced. the charge was slightly under $250. after discussing the problem with the warranty division, the consumer was given a discount of $150.00. the consumer no longer wished to pursue his complaint. updated ivoq 06/15/12
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). after the repair was performed, the power steering warning indicator began to illuminate. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the conrtact was awaiting further repairs. the contact had not experienced a defect with the power steering prior to the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 99,997.
While driving on a well maintained road, with no environmental factors (such as wind, rain, snow), i completely lost control of the steering of my vehicle. i did not hear any beeping, clicking, or any noises that would have indicated that there was something wrong. the car weaved across two lanes, and hit a guardrail before crashing front-first into a tree. both airbags were deployed. i was able to safely make it out of the vehicle. i was later taken to an urgent care where x rays showed that my spine was out of alignment. i am currently suffering back and neck pain which keeps me from engaging in daily activities as well as performing my job to the best of my ability. i bought this car because it was supposed to be safe, yet it seems this vehicle is the cause of the crash, and my subsequent injuries. *tr
I was driving with my new born baby when the power steering went out and i couldnt control the car. *tr
Well driving to dinner for my birthday and going around a curve, i hit a pothole that i could not avoid without crossing the center line of the road into oncoming traffic causing my ignition switch to turn from the on position to the off position, much like the most recent recall states. though i was able to safely get the car to come to rest on the shoulder of the road, i am still extremely nervous that it will happen again and i am also very, very disappointed to hear that this has been a known issue since the car was released. this is the third recall on this car since i have owned it, and i am far less than impressed with the vehicle. this vehicle is truly a death trap, much like others have stated. my greatest fear is that someone in my family will be driving my car and not return, all because of this giant mess created by gm. it is very depressing to know that i am still paying on an extremely faulty vehicle, in which these issues were known about long before i had actually purchased the vehicle. i would like something done about this, something more than just a "simple" fix (like all the other recalls with this death trap were said to be). it is one thing after another with this car, and though something serious has yet to happen to me, i am concerned for the future of others and myself. *tr
Pulling out of my parking space 2 hours after i parked, and my car started jerking forward. then i noticed my check engine light came on, then power steering starting flashing across the screen then my t/c light came on. i ut the car off, and waited a few minutes, started it back up, it seemed fine, i drove 5 feet and my car jumped forward, i lost steering, power steering flashing in the lights on my dash, then my check engine light came on again, and my t/c light came on. my car starts and runs fine at an idle, if i try to drive it, it shakes horribly then it jumps forward and tries to die. if i had let my daughter drive, she would of had an accident!! and yet my car is not part of the 2005 steering recall!! what is the problem here!! i just did some research, and a few phone calls to find out there was a recall but my 2005 total electronic steering is not part of this recall when clearly my car is affected by it. i want answers and i want them now. i can not afford to pay 2000 to have something fixed that is not the fault of the driver, but the fault of gm and their not recognizing all these vehicles have a problem but only select ones. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy cobalt the tc light and power steering light comes on and the steering locks also when you turn it off two or three times the car will be ok for a couple of days and the tack gauges goes crazy while in park putting it in gear there is a clicking in the gear shifter i feel this car is unsafe to drive had it to the dealer i brought the car at and the tell me there is nothing wrong with it and send me on my way i have had it three times im scared to drive it its sad you pay alot of money for a car and they act like there don't care. this has been since the recall on the ignition witch recall i feel that gm need to look into this before someone is hurt. *tr
After having been repaired several times under the power steering recall, the problems have become worse. the car stalls, lights flicker, the low fuel message will flash despite there being gas in the car, the power steering is completely inoperable, the speedometer rests on zero at all times, various warning lights are always illuminated and the car struggles to get out of second gear (it is an automatic.) the dealership service center gave diagnostic codes indicating possible issues with the body control module and electronic control module and stated that it wasn't covered under the recall, but that the power steering motor had again gone out, but they would not fix it. the car has stalled numerous times on -ramps to highways and in intersections and has become too dangerous to drive, but chevrolet has refused to acknowledge the problem and only technical service bulletins exist, though they will now acknowledge them when asked, as though the problem is not a dangerous one. the entire electrical system of the car is faulty and should be recalled as it is a major safety concern. *tr

The power steering light came on and became hard to steer. luckily i was able to pull over and stop as there was no one else on the highway at the time. i've there was a recall on the part but when i called the dealer they seem to think they have already fixed the problem but i will bring it in tomorrow. after reading all the stories about this model its a wonder gm has done nothing about it. i will have to pay almost 100 dollar for them to just look at the car. lords only knows what its going to take for them to attempt to repair it for good. i'm not really sure its worth fixing but who can just go out and buy a new car because gm sold junk in the first place. *tr
When pulling out of our drive way this morning, the car suddenly began to jerk, i thought it was nothing. then as i pulled to the stop sign, the car then jerked again and somewhat slowed down and the low brake fluid lights began to flash and a dinging noise came on as well. i immediately turned the car back into our driveway but barely could because the steering wheel was so stiff it would hardly budge. *tr
Power steering stops working and then starts working sometimes when driving. power steering pump was changed by chevrolet dealer in march, 2011. by may, 2011, same problem of power steering working erratically resumed. dealer looked at it again on 9/30/11 and was unable to fix. on october 18, 2011, a near accident occurred when the power steering started working during a sharp turn at 25 mph while entering an on ramp. the force it takes to turn the wheel at that speed is estimated at 30 lbs and while applying that force in the sharp turn and the power steering suddenly started working, resulting in my making a significant turn to the right and almost running off the ramp and down a 15' embankment. the vehicle is too hazardous to drive. *tr
I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt, the power steering and traction control lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle then began to jerk and become difficult to drive. the vehicle had to be towed to an authorized dealer and repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system); but the dealer told me that there no recall for my vehicle, apparently they was base on the vehicle vin # instead of model/made/year of the car. the dealer told me i need to replace steering column which will cost me close to $1000 w/part, labor & taxes. pickup my car on the same day late afternoon, was able to drive home with no incident. however, the failure recurred the next day, again towed the car back to the dealership, the manufacturer was aware of the failure. the vehicle was awaiting further inspection at the dealership, in the meantime i'm driving the rental that was provided by the dealership. this is mfg defected problem, i should not have to paid to fix the steering column. *tr
This incident occurred at about 9:30pm on the night of 9/21/11. the failure of the air bags and steering occurred on nj state route 78 west, about 50 feet before the ramp to route 31. there was no traffic congestion on the road, and visibility was good. i was fully awake, and was familiar with driving this route on a daily basis. while i was driving my 2005 chevrolet cobalt home from college, my vehicle lost power steering right before i got onto the ramp. keep in mind that my vehicle was traveling completely straight at the time when the power steering light came on, and about half a second later my vehicle began spinning to the right. before i could slow down or straighten the car, my vehicle had rotated almost a full 90 degrees to the right. at this point the ramp had started, and thus to avoid hitting the guard rail on the right side of the road i made a strong effort to turn the wheel to the left and straighten my car. i succeeded in turning the wheel to the left, and thus straightened my car out until my car then started to spin to the left, and bounced off of the guard rail on the left side of the ramp at approximately 40mph. a couple seconds elapsed from when the power steering light came on, to when my car hit the guard rail. after the car bounced off of the guard rail, it continued to spin for another 270 degrees, and came to rest on the narrow shoulder, parallel to the road. the air bag did not deploy, and after i shut the car off and turned it back on, the power steering warning light had disappeared entirely. although i drove the car off of the ramp, as i was instructed to by police, the car was totaled due to significant damage to the front of the body and frame of the vehicle. after the incident i discovered the previous recall on the power steering motor, however when i checked with the dealer, their records indicated that the recall was fulfilled. *tt
My 05 chevy cobalt was driving on the high way going about 70mph switch lanes and my power steering got out of control and got into a wreck hit some one beside me. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing a recurring failure in which the power steering would fail and cause the steering wheel to seize. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle was initially repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
Bought the car on 08/03/2011 with 40,933 miles on it. the steering column was defective at the time of purchase (found out after the fact). had that repaired at local chevy dealership between 8/13/2011 and 8/16/2011(i can't find the receipt for the mileage at time of repair). on 8/18/2011, recall replaced steering motor failed. the only reason we made it home without a wreck was that we were exiting the heavily traffic urban area heading for our rural home. am currently refusing to drive the car again and seeking resolution tomorrow morning. it is my opinion that the steering in this vehicle will never be reliable. total of 3 steering fails on this car in 41,581 total miles.
This submission is an addendum to the report that i submitted on aug 15, 2011; reference number 10419491 with the attachments that include the police report, may statement and photos. i submitted my report two days after the accident. now, after reading the news articles and the gm statements regarding the faulty ignition switch, it is apparent that what i thought was a steering malfunction (per the recalls i received and the statements made to me by gm representatives) was clearly the ignition switch. while driving down the freeway at 60 mph my dash lights turned on, i immediately lost steering control (i could not turn my steering wheel) and swerved had to the left crashing into the guard rail. the accident report shows my skid marks across three traffic lanes that clearly indicate that my abs system also was not working. my airbags did not deploy even though my front end was crushed and the car totaled. nothing on my car worked because the ignition switch had turned off. my original report should indicate that my car suffered an ignition switch malfunction that caused the accident. i was belted in so after being released from the hospital emergency room (i was taken by ambulance from the crash site) i was diagnosed with a cervical sprain, multiple cuts and bruises, sprained ankle and knee. my head impacted the windshield even though i had my seat belt on. *tr
The 05 cobalt, regularly serviced by the dealer where it was bought crashed after going out of control when the ignition switched off on the interstate at 60 mph. the steering locked, the abs did not function, when it crashed into the guard rail the air bags did not deploy. the only warning was the dash warning lights all lighting up and the alarm sounds. the one second or so did not allow any chance to the driver to react before the crash. after the accident, when the dealer was contacted, we were advised to contact the gm person. the gm person was friendly and nice, but very firm in stating that we needed to have proof that the car failed, rather the driver at the wheel. the cars computer was not analyzed because the wrecking yard demanded over $700 to tow the car out of the wrecking yard so any investigator could look over the car. gm told us that it was our problem to pay the bill to allow their investigator to look at the car. we did not have the money. after reading numerous comments on the nhtsa site and blogs, people never heard a word from gm after they retrieved the computer. the salient point is that many of the over a thousand complaints about the cobalt and other similar gm cars that identified the power steering as the problem that caused a crash are wrong. the power steering was not the cause of the crash. the problem was that the ignition switch turned off. the gm recalls about the power steering problem hide the fact that the ignition switches were turning off while the car was moving down the road. we know that the lack of power assist only affect the car at a stop or very slow speeds. experienced drivers do not crash their car into guard rails, ditches, trees or other car simply because the power assist fails. that story is what gm has been selling in the past few years. *tr

Chevy cobalt have had power steering motor replaced twice, still no power steering, now dealership says it needs a new steering column for 1000.00,which i cant afford, have had to replace computer module for motor, replace rims that were out of round, head lights bulbs come loose and don't work , loses power and the car feels like it has run into a wall it jerks so hard, steering locks up without notice, key gets stuck in ignition. all of these have happened to my fine chevy product, when is chevy going to do something about it. *tr

Not sure exactly when it happened, but it has been occurring for years now. i have spent thousands of dollars in diagnostics, parts, and labor trying to fix the mystery problem! i'm fed up! it seems to happen randomly and fix itself randomly. sometimes it lasts a couple days and sometimes longer than a couple weeks. the problem: my car will lose power steering, it starts shifting really hard and the gauges inside get all screwed. occasionally when it happens it just won't shift at all. it will stay in first gear. the inside gauges: the speedometer will bounce all over the place, never staying still. the radio will also get loud and quiet by itself. the power locks would frantically go up and down themselves, until i took out the spark plug for those. it is very difficult to drive when the power steering goes out, not like cars that were built without it in the first place. the very hard shifting cannot be good for the car and is dangerous when i am driving during winter months or rainy weather. i live in michigan and it snows a lot. even the chevy dealership can't tell me what is wrong and i have paid to have numerous parts replaced that have not fixed the problem. i've read other boards online with people having the same issue. i just cannot afford to keep paying to not get the problem fixed. i hate driving such an unreliable car with two young children, four years and 10 months. it happened multiple times when my little one was a newborn. felt like i was giving the poor baby whiplash when the car switched gears. it's an automatic so there is nothing i can do about it. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt. i was driving and all of a sudden my steering wheel wouldn't turn back. i took it to my mechanic and he told me that it was the power steering module...there was no power going to it. i took the car in last june because i got a recall letter for the electric power steering module. i was told to take it to the chevrolet dealer. so i did. i told them it was the power steering module not getting power. they took the car replaced the electric module..told me they took it for ride and the power steering module burned out the power steering electric module and that i would need another $800 some odd dollars. i told them i don't have that kind of money. they said then there was nothing they could do. they charged me $363.00 and told me the car was very very unsafe to drive..but yet they let me drive it off of the lot like that in the same condition. they said they did not connect the power steering module back to the power electric steering module so it wouldn't burn it out. i told them maybe that wasn't the problem. if the electric power steering module was replaced in june..it wasn't even a year before it was no good. of course the warranty was over. i called the customer service office and demanded my money back. i'm out $363.00 and nothing is fixed. i have the same problem. i told them they need to do a recall on the power steering modules. i wish that you would investigate this problem. as i was reading on the autoguide.com..there are alot of people out there with the same problem. they didn't care that i could have an accident or kill someone else. all that mattered is that i did not have the money. by the way the part was supposedly $140.00 but the labor was $230.00. i will never by another gm car. i don't trust them or the dealers. please do a recall before someone gets seriously hurt. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while accelerating from a stop the contact heard a loud banging noise in the steering column. the contact stopped the vehicle and began to turn the steering wheel and heard a popping noise. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 65,000. updated 12/19/11
Last year, my 05 cobalt experienced power steering failure and concurrent hard shifting between gears upon power steering notice of failure. i took my car in to the dealer to be fixed in accordance with the associated recall. last week, one year later, i have experienced the same exact problems again. the car will chime and report "power steering failure". if driving above 15 mph, there isn't much to notice regarding power steering, however, if changing speed requires your car to shift up or down to a different gear, the car will jerk ("hiccup") heavily, as if an inexperienced driver was trying to drive a car with a manual transmission. the car has 46,000 miles on it and this is clearly not my problem. please insist that gm issue a recall with a real remedy for this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering failed. the contact noticed the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.
After starting the cobalt or even if i am driving down the interstate at 70 mph, the t/c lights, brake lights, power steering lights all light up on the dash. the speedometer and rpm gauges start going crazy. the radio will also go in and out. usually on the interstate, the car will continue to drive, which is very scary. but if i am in town or slowing down to stop, the car will cut off. then after i crank it again and start to move, the transmission changes gears really rough and feels like it is going to fall out. the only thing i have found to fix this (after weeks at different dealerships) is to turn the car off and flip the key on and off several(20 plus) times. *tr
Electric power steering assist stopped functioning. driving on highway, driver info center message "power steering" displayed. no steering assist. parked vehicle for short time and assist returned. drove for short period and assist again ceased to function. have not been to dealer yet to fix the problem. *tr
The power steering failed in my 2005 cobalt. i took it to the dealer where they replaced a recalled power steering motor. they just called me and told me that didn't fix my power steering failure and i will be charged for any farther work being done. they obviously admit having a problem with their power steering system but what they replaced didn't fix my problem. *tr
My 2005 chevy cobalt has been having some issues with a knocking sound while driving. almost sounds as if something was loose and hitting something else is the only way i know to describe it. people who have drove in my car thought it was bad shocks or struts, but those have been checked and working fine. it makes the noise while driving, hitting normal bumps in the road, etc. i had a mechanic look at it and he replaced some lower arm bushings in the front end. but that did not fix the problem. he looked at a service bulletin and narrowed my problem down to two things. one being the electric motor in the steering column. this part was supposedly replaced by my local dealer when chevy put out a recall on it. the other part was the steering gear that turns the wheel. he said this could cost up to $500 to replace and didn't want to take a chance and that not be it. i did not have the money to replace it any way. he said he did not see a safety issue driving the car as is for now. but i wanted to report the problem in case others with this vehicle are having the same issues so a recall can be done. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized while driving at various speeds. the gauges on the instrument panel also displayed inaccurate readings whenever the failure occurred. the contact stated that she had to wait long periods of time before the steering wheel returned to normal functioning ability. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the failure was common for the make and model. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact also stated that prior to the failures, the vehicle was repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). the failure mileage was unknown. the vin was unavailable.
Car loses power steering randomly, dealer wont recognize recall. will be turning and car will all of a sudden lose the power steering causing my car to jerk and i need to correct. *tr
The car was taken in on 6/3/10 as a part of the recall of the electric power motor. prior to that time there had been two incidents where all of a sudden the steering column would lock, the car would shut off and after stopping, and restarting the car would start. we thought the problem was solved. the week of february 15, 2011 two incidents happened with my daughter 21 years old in the car. the first was after she hit a small pot hole, the steering column locked she pulled over restarted the car. the same week she was driving on i-94 at 60 miles per hour the steering column locked, she was able to get to side of the road, and restart the car. on february 22 or 23, 2011 we took the car in to george matick chevrolet to ask them to check the recall work because it was the same problem. the representatives there said that we had to pay $95.00 for an inspection. they indicated that there was no problem with the recall work that they did, and more then likely it was an ignition switch that would have to be replaced and the cost for that would be approximately $500.00 i would not pay for an inspection because this is exactly the same problem that we had previously and this is extremely dangerous as you can not tell when or how it will happen. the inspection of the recall work that they did was simply sitting behind the wheel of the car and attesting that there was no problem. i took the car to my normal mechanic who did a diagnostic and he could find nothing wrong and said we would have to wait until it failed again. the problem is that someone can get killed with this. this recall did not solve this problem or the motor i received in the car is still defective. i would like a definitive answer to this problem before someone gets hurt. the consumer stated her daughter hit a pot hole and the steering went out. she was able to pull over and restart the vehicle. the consumer stated it appeared the recall issued by g.m was not effective. updated 06/23/11

I took my car to a chevy dealer for safety recall 10023 after i was driving home from work and i heard beeping and the 'power steering' appeared in the console. once the power steering light came on, the gears had a slamming sound and the car would only drive 10 mph at max speed. the day i picked it up, the same thing happened a mile away from the dealer but this time i heard the clicking sound the brake will make when you take the car out of park, shook the entire car when the gears shifted, drove only 10 mph and felt like it would stall if i came to a complete stop. i pulled it over in a parking lot and immediately had it towed back to the dealer who, the next day after looking at the car again, told me he could find nothing wrong with the car. fed up with this dealer, i took it to a local garage to have it inspected, again nothing. i do not feel safe driving this car at all now. i don't understand how there can be so many persistent problems with this car, yet no mechanics can say there is an issue. the power steering light should only come on when there is a serious problem, and for one to not be detected is very frustrating. i have been without a car for nearly 2 weeks now and have gotten no closer to feeling safe with me or my family inside of it.
