While driving my cobalt from anywhere between 10mph to 50mph multiple "ding" noises occur. then any number of alert lights come on including; traction control, air bag, check engine, etc... there is a strange clicking noise that comes from somewhere in the dash. also, along with these symptoms the transmission (auto trans) begins to shift very hard both up and down, car shudders as if it is going to stall when it comes to a near stop. the scariest and most dangerous part is that the car has experienced loss of power steering at speed and loss of braking control. sometimes i have spent 5 minutes trying to get my key out of the ignition as well, and must forcefully move the transmission shift knob back and forth until the key turns free. this car is a danger, and despite having multiple recalls it is still unsafe to drive. *tr

I was driving my chevy cobalt on tuesday around 25 mph when something popped up saying power steering, the steering wheel got completely hard and i couldn't turn it. almost got into a car accident while making a left. next day, nothing happened. a day after, it started with the problem again. took my car to the mechanic and he told me that it might be that the pump went bad. this is outrageous and really scary. gm has to do something about it considering i am not the first one to complain about this. *tr

On november 11th, 2013, i was driving my vehicle down my street when all of a sudden, my car reads power steering and the tc light also comes on. the car begins to jerk as if it was going to turn off on its on. i immediately pulled over and turned the car off and waited about 5 minutes before i turned the car back on. when i started the car again the lights went off and the car drove as if nothing happened. on november 24th, 2013, i was leaving work and as i was pulling out of the parking lot into incoming traffic, the wheel all of a sudden just locked up on me and i almost had a serious accident. when i pulled over, the power steering light comes on again but this time so does the transmission light. i drove it to the nearest auto zone to get a diagnostics on it and they informed me that the codes that had showed up were dealer codes and only they could fix the problem. i stopped at the gas station to try and check the power steering fluid on it but there was no dipstick. when i turned the car on again, the power steering light and transmission light both turned off and the car drove as if nothing ever happened. i googled the codes that the gentleman gave me at auto zone and it turns out that there is a recall on my type of vehicle for the same exact issues. i called the dealership to try and get the issue fixed for free, but when i gave the mechanic the last 8 digits of my vin, he stated to me that my car wasn't listed on the list of recalls despite the fact that im having the same issues as the cars that have actually been recalled. i don't know what to do and i fear for my safety as well as the safety of my kids and other drivers. please help me to get this issue reported asap to gm. i love my car but i also love my kids and our lives. *tr

On saturday morning 8/24/13 i got into my car and backed out of the driveway. once i backed out of the driveway and put the car into drive the car started to jerk. i kept driving for about another 50 feet to a stop sign. it jerked to whole way to the stop sign. there i made a u turn to go back home to get my father. he got in the car and we drove back to the same corner and once again it jerked the whole way to the stop sign. so we went back to the house so my dad could get some his shoes on so we could take it to where i bought the car. while he was in the house i turn the car off. when my dad got back in the car and i turn the car back on and drove to the sign the jerking had went away. i drove the car the rest of the day and put around 75 miles on it that day with no other problems. on sunday night 8/25/13 i got into my car to drive into town. i drove about block and the car began to jerk and shake again. i drove about another block and pulled into a parking lot. once i stopped i noticed the power steering light on the dashboard had come on. i turned my car off and sit there for a little while turned it back on and drove in town with no problems the rest of the night. on monday 8/26/13 i drove the car 30 miles back to where i bought it with no problems. their service department has been trying to recreate the problem now for 3 day with no success. *tt

At random times, my 2005 chevy cobalt will pop up a "check engine" light and a "traction control" light, where i lose my power steering, the motor shifts hard into each gear, and the motor runs very rough. also, there are clicking sounds at the shifter, like it is trying to shift into a gear or something. this is a serious hazard and as i've read online, i am not the only one this has happened to. there are thousands of others. this entire car needs to be recalled because no one knows what is doing this! *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt. consumer requests reimbursement for power steering motor recall repairs. *smd the consumer stated the power steering went out on the vehicle. if she turned the vehicle off and back on, the steering would resume normal operation momentarily. the power steering light did illuminate and there was an alert sound. a diagnosis revealed the electronic power steering motor failed. the consumer contacted the dealer, who originally performed the recall, in 2010. they informed her they were no longer required to replace the power steering motor again. the consumer went to another establishment and had the steering motor replaced at a cost of $ 633.11. *jb

The traction control light came on, the car started jerking really bad. the check engine light came on, and the "power steering" started flashing on my dashboard. my power steering went out, i was unable to steer the car. i had the car towed to the dealership, they could not get it to duplicate the problem. exactly one week later, it did it again, once again i had it towed to the dealer. they had the car for 2 weeks and could not get it to duplicate the problem. so, once again i have the car back, lets see how long it takes to screw up this time. *tr

I was driving down the hill and my car made a "ding noise" three times and on the display it said power steering at which time it made a clicking noise and i could barely turn the steering wheel, i made it about 3 feet with the car "bucking" and was able to pull into the nearest parking lot and sat there and turned my car off and then turned it on the steering wheel would only turn slightly and my car would not reverse. this happened about 3 years ago and i had it fixed for $800 and now it's happening again. i am fearful that this car is not safe to drive and i don;t know what is wrong with my power steering. i had a new engine put in last year and all this for a car that is only 7 yrs old. i don't have the money to keep replacing parts and i am concerned that this is not a safe car for myself and my children. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that nhtsa campaign number 10v073000 (steering) was performed however, the vehicle stalled numerous times after the repairs. additionally, the vehicle exhibited an abnormal and sporadic clicking noise. the instrument panel lights were abnormally dim and the transmission exhibited a loud noise. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 39,000.

I was driving down the road and the power steering gave out. i had this replaced in 2010 and it has already given out. i called the customer service line and they said it was my problem unless i went to the dealership and got another diagnostic test done on the car which was my responsibility. i was unaware of the first recall and was charged 100 deductible. i figured since i was there getting my car serviced i would get other things fixed. *tr

While traveling about 30-40 mph, lost control of car, could not steer, crashed through trees, car totaled. air bags did not deploy. *js

Vehicle has a rattle and vibration at highways speeds from 50-80. steering is very loose and rattling sound is loud. also, at slow speeds and going over bumps there is a clunking sound in the steering column and rattling noise from wheel. *tr

I was almost killed in this car when my steering froze up on the highway. i couldn't turn my wheel. thank god i was able to make it to the side of the road, but was very dangerous & scary. long story short i had it checked out and was told it needs a new steering assist motor which was recalled back in 2010. my dealership claims they fixed it back in 2010 when the recall was issued. they claim to have the paperwork (actually only 1/2 of the paper work). if it was fixed it isn't working now and i was almost killed. this was a recall and i don't think i should have to pay $500. to get it fixed. i have complained to gm & spoke to [xxx] at your company and got nowhere! in fact [xxx] sided with the dealership. i would like this fixed at no expense to myself. if his issue is not resolved i am going to my local tv show and also to my state senator ron blumenfeld who will indeed resolve this issue if you are at all familiar with channel 8 and mr blumenfeld. i can't believe you would jeopardize someone's safety over the almighty dollar! i should not have to pay $115. just to get it looked at and then another $500 to replaced the motor....yet again!! i look forward to hearing back from you. i am copying this letter to [xxx] as well as my attorney. also, terryville chevy, where i bought the car has been totally unhelpful and refusing to help me without money. it is a 2005 chevy cobalt. Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated while accelerating from a complete stop, there was a loss of power steering and the warning indicator illuminated. the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

My wife's chevrolet cobalt was part of the power steering motor recall and received the repair on may 26, 2010. the car functioned normally until march 31 of 2013 when the cobalt, with only 17, 321 miles, was brought to the local chevrolet dealership after my wife experienced a failure of the power steering. next i accompanied my wife to the parking lot where it had been parked and discovered that upon re-starting, the car functioned normally. the check engine light however was on. we took the car to the dealership on feb. 1, 2013 where the power steering problem and check engine light was discussed. the technicians indicated that they could find nothing wrong with the power steering, simply stating that, "'it works now!" on friday march 8, 2013, the power steering message appeared on the speedometer, a chime sounded, and the power steering went out. i managed to drive the car home and park it. the steering was very hard to operate, as the power steering was not functioning. if my wife had been driving, i seriously doubt whether she would have been able to control the car. during this same incident the engine ran extremely rough and almost died several times. this car simply is not safe. the recall repair was not successful suggesting that general motors had its dealers perform on the cobalt was not the correct one. (was it the most economical for g.m.?). since that time we have driven less than 500 miles and it is now fourteen months later! we are afraid to drive this car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that both the traction control and power steering warning indicators illuminated until the engine was turned off. there was also a complete loss of power steering and the transmission began to down shift independently. the contact was able to continue to drive with excessive force being applied to the steering wheel. the failures would recur sporadically. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering). the failure recurred one year after the recall remedy was performed. the vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000. the vin was unavailable.

When starting up the vehicle, the check engine and traction lights are lit up. the gauges fluctuate, as well as the temperture reading blinks. loud clicking sounds can be heard coming from the shift selector. the steering wheel will not turn due to loss of power steering. after shutting off vehicle, the ignition will not release keys for about 15-20 seconds. have also lost power steering on freeway at speeds of 70 mph. have attempted to have gm and the dealership resolve the issue, first by having the recalled parts replaced. problem is recurring for third time, after being "handled" by the dealership the last two times. a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem. *tr

After having gm replace my power steering motor in march 2013, the power steering failed again as i was driving on the freeway. luckily i managed to maintain control of the vehicle and drive to safety. dealership then diagnosed the problem as being the transmission control module, costing me $607 to fix. a year and 6 months later, my power steering is failing yet again. i call the dealership and they say i can drive it into the dealership as soon as possible. it seems the chevrolet does not understand that this problem has killed people. after expressing my concern for my personal safety (as well as others on the road) the dealership said i could get it towed at my own expense. i'm sorry, this is the second time general motors will "attempt" to fix my cars problem and it is at my expense? i beg the national highway traffic administration to have gm take these vehicles off the road and compensate owners. i am truly afraid for my safety every time i get into my car. had i been able to afford a new one, i would have - but not everyone has that privilege. please, too many people have already lost their lives. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the power steering warning lamp illuminated as the vehicle stalled. the contact mentioned that once she was able to restart the vehicle it hesitated and started shaking violently. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 117,600 and the current mileage was 117,631.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the power steering malfunctioned and the power steering warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 127,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the power steering assist failed and the contact lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a ditch. there were no injuries. the vehicle had been previously repaired for the power steering assist under recall nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). the vehicle was not taken to the dealer after the crash. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 174,000.

After having taken my car into the chevrolet dealer for a power steering failure the car acted up again. they replaced the power steering motor however after about 1 hour of driving the cruise control disengaged and the power steering message came on the display. the gauges started going crazy and the check engine light would flash on and off as well as the parking brake light. at lower speeds there was a clicking sound from under the automatic transmission box and the car jerked when changing gears. this is extremely dangerous as driving on the free way at those speeds can lead to fatalities. i am extremely thankful nothing happened. general motors needs to get this right as clearly replacing the power steering motor is not the solution to the problem! *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt begins to shake while driving on the freeway. i can feel the vibration starting through the floor board and eventually the whole front end begins to shake. the steering wheel violently shakes from front to back(versus side to side) and the vehicle is hard to control. i always have to pull over or get off the freeway. it feels like the whole front end is going to fall apart. after coming to a complete stop i can continue to drive without any problems. this began almost 6 months ago. i have had my car looked at several times and each time i take it and someone test drives it they cannot find a problem. they have done inspections of brakes, tires ( rebalance and rotate, checked front end alignment, checked steerage and linkage and they find nothing wrong. they also tell me that my car is in great condition. but it continues to shake all the time. sometimes it won't happen for a week or two, sometimes it happens two or three times a week. . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact started the ignition, and a sudden loss in the power steering assist occurred. the vehicle was restarted numerous times before operating normally. in june 2012, the vehicle was repaired for the defect under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering: electric power assist system). the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 22,162. updated 02/20/13*lj the consumer stated the power assist fails while driving. no p.s. warning lights except when driving. the dealer stated no warranty on recall repairs. updated 2/20/2013 *js

The power steering message was on and the car ran like a dog and shifted roughly and traction control light was luminated and had no power is similar to all other accounts on this year and model? i need to know if gm is going to fix it and if it happens again am i going to loose control of the car? i understand it has a recall on it but considering the miles i have on it are they going to honor the recall? i don't have money to fix it so i don't know what to do if it happens again? i never seen or had anything like this before and i have always had gm products form oldsmobile, pontiac and mostly chevys i need reliable transporting on my job please tell me gm make this right by me [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

In the first incident, the power steering on my 2005 cobalt suddenly failed while accelerating up to highway speeds making it very difficult to turn. the power steering failure lasted until the vehicle was shut off after reaching my destination. the next day the power steering failed suddenly again twice and the failure would last until the vehicle was shut off. it's the same problem listed in recall #10v073000, but according to chevy, my vehicle isn't one included in the recall. *tr

My car was in the recall for power steering and i had the dealership replace the parts. i believe the recall was in 2010. within the last year i had the power steering motor replaced because it was doing the same thing it was doing before the recall. i lose power steering and the car jerks intermittently. there is no warning and it happens at all speeds. i was told to pull off to the side of the road, turn the car off and it should fix itself. unfortunately, the car started doing the same thing tonight. i am horrified that this is still happening and feel like the car is a death trap. i don't feel safe driving it and especially not with my children in the car. i plan on taking this issue up with chevrolet again, in the hopes that they should pay for it. please contact me for further information, i feel very strongly that this car should be recalled again for this issue. *tr

tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 34 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated, the speed decreased to zero and the tachometer increased to 4,000 rpms. the locks on the door started going up and down and the vehicle became difficult to steer. the contact stopped and turned the vehicle off. after the vehicle was started, the failure was resolved. the failure recurred six times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that the vehicle had too many fault codes to be diagnosed properly. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. the vin was unavailable. the current and failure mileage was 136,000.

I was driver and the wheel get stuck. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering: electronic power assist system) in may of 2010. the contact stated that the repaired failed and the power steering assist failed, causing the steering wheel to become extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was not further repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

The 2005 chevy cobalt, as well as possibly every other model year cobalt has more problems than just the power steering motor failures. the speedometer no longer works in my vehicle, the low-fuel warning pops up no matter how much gas is in the car, the engine warning light illuminates, as well as the anti-theft light, battery light (the battery is brand new) and just about every light on the dashboard. though this isn't a big problem, the radio locks itself and cannot be used until the car is turned off and turned back on. the car struggles to get out of first gear and has stalled repeatedly at red lights and on ramps to the highway. i have had the power steering recall repair done twice and when i took the car back to the dealership in may because the power steering warning had popped up again and the power steering stopped working, they said it was not the power steering and they sent me home in my stalling, jumping car with no power steering. speaking to a chevy customer service representative, they told me to go have the car diagnosed (they did run a scan at the dealership and came up with codes u2107, u2100 and u2105) and that i should be responsible for the cost. i asked why they didn't suggest this at the dealership, and was never given an answer other than a repeated i should be held responsible and it's probably a bad ecm or bcm. the car is out of warranty and chevy offered 50% of the repair cost, but how is this a problem that i caused and should be responsible for at all? this car is incredibly unsafe to drive and i have read a number of similar complaints for this vehicle online. gm must be held responsible for their faulty vehicles. the power steering recall did not take care of everyone's problems and the customers should not be held responsible for the manufacturer's failure. *tr
