Problems with 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Around october of 2009, the temperature gauge in my 2005 chevy cavalier started acting funny. my car was not overheating i had it checked. over the course of the next couple of months the gauge needle started going all the way to the right into the speedometer thus effecting the speedometer's accuracy in telling me how fast i am going. the needle now rests below the 0 mph mark on the speedometer. at the time i did not have the funds to get it fixed. now just yesterday august 1, 2010 the gas gauge started acting funny, which i started noticing about a month ago. now the needle is resting in the temp gauge area so i have no idea how much gas i have. to me all these sound like safety issues to me.. not knowing how hot your car is running! not knowing how fast you are going! and not knowing how much gas you have. i did some research and turns out i am not the first chevrolet cavalier consumer with this problem. their have been recalls for tahoes, silverados, ect but not for cavalier which has the same thing happening that these vehicles have had. i am taking it tomorrow to have the whole instrument panel cluster replaced at the gm dealership and it will cost me $500 approximately. this is unacceptable for something that is clearly not my fault if multiple vehicles are having the same problem. and what happens if the same thing happens again because chevrolet puts faulty equipment in their vehicles and doesn't take responsibility for it and tries to call it normal wear and tear?? i will have to pay 500 again to have it repaired again. i want to know what kind of wear and tear causes this problem to occur. *tr

Defective speedometer instrument cluster, speedometer malfunctioning when vehicle is in operation , speedometer will indicate various speeds like 110, 100. 70, mph or stuck in a mph position when vehicle is not in operation with engine off. *tr

Speedometer defective, needle sticking at various speeds when vehicle is moving. ( 100 , 70, 64, 59 mph) really don't know what the actual speed of vehicle is when vehicle is begin driven. needle moves at anything and sticks in position even after vehicle engine is turned off. vehicle was taken to general motors repair shop on 10/06/09 , the diagnosis was a defective speedometer cluster. checked with general mirrors corporation , they have not issued a safety recall on this vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet cavalier and my speedometer and gas gauge have gone crazy, this repair is upwards of about $600 and i just went online to figure out what i could do and found a website called carcomplaints.com where 30 other people had the same if not similar issue with the 2004-2005 cavalier, there was rumor of a recall after the car stimulus event, but now i need to get my car inspected and cannot because of this issue. i have used a gps to monitor my speed, thank god for those and so have several other people, but i believe this is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed. *tr

2005 chevrolet cavalier instrument panel has serious problems temperature gauge shows the car is over heating and interferes with the speedometer also the speedometer will show 110mph while sitting in park or while doing 65mph drop and show no speed. also the front of the dash cracks out and can produce sharp pieces that can cut through the skin easily. also the steering has the same problem as the 2005 cobalts at low speeds sometimes the car is very hard to turn. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy cavalier with a faulty cluster that controls instrument panel. i now can smell what seems to be electrical burning. many other owners have this problem also. gm needs to do a recall on this problem. my gas & temp gauages never work & speedometer is only working part time. i bought this car brand new in 2004 & within 3 months the motor had to be replaced due to factory defect. 6 months later, the clutch. this vehicle has major problems! i was completely surprised to find that there are many others with the exact same problem with their gauage & it is my understanding costs between 600 to 800 dollars to fix! my car only has 46,000 miles on it. yes, it is a headache to deal with trying to keep up with your gas mileage but now i fear that something is always burning in my car! gm, as i understand, fixed a similar problem with some pick up trucks but won't touch the cavalier. this needs to be addressed! i am afraid to drive my car for fear it could burst into flames!! i implore you to please make gm accountable for their products. this is obviously a common problem that is truly a factory defect on their part. consumers should not have to pay for their mistakes!! *tw

2005 chevy cavalier. about a year ago my temperature gauge started malfunctioning. the indicator needle would go off it's gauge and interfere with the speedometer needle. i took it in and had the temp sensor replaced and it seem ed to fix it till a week later the same thing happened. my mechanic thought it might be a faulty sensor so he replaced that. same thing happened.. i was then told that the instrument cluster would have to be replaced for about $500-$700. i've done research on this problem and it seems to be a wide spread problem with this vehicle. now the speedometer is malfunctioning. it was indicating 110 mph while i was doing about 45mph. other times it has read 45 when i was doing about 60 mph. ( i timed myself by mile markers...1 mile in 1 minute = 60 mph. not only has this raised my chance of speeding tickets but i feel it is a real safety issue. people will be going much faster than their speedometer indicates. gm has recalled truck models with the same problem but not the cavalier. my guess is that gm does not make that model anymore but they still make the trucks. i am very uncomfortable driving this car now and to get it fixed would be a gamble in itself. they would probably put the same poorly designed and manufactured panel back in. this is just not right. i would appreciate some feedback on this matter. my vehicle is not safe to drive due to poor gm quality. please help. thank you. *tr

Power window failure, windows stuck, replaced window motor 2 times, failure again, unable to open or close windows, gas gauge and speedometer not working. *tr

When my gauges won't work i punch the dash right behind the steering wheel & voila, they jump to attention. my speedometer does hang up slightly < & the car overheats slightly in heavy traffic. 2 coolant changes in 100,000 miles have had no effect. dexcool is not good, as it will gel. recommend draining immediately for all. *tr

We bought our '05 cavalier used in the fall of 2008, thinking it was a solid, reliable vehicle for our young family. it didn't take long (date i posted was approximate, based on when i know for sure it was doing it's thing) for the gauges to start acting up. from then on, it reads like it's overheating on a regular basis (going all the way to the red sometimes), despite the cooling system, thermostat, etc. being fine. also, the gas and odometer gauges act up, typically when the temp gauge does. they move around all crazy and stick sometimes. i find i often have to remove the fuse to the gauges to reset them, though this tends to require sitting for as much as 5 minutes. all this just to be able to discern how fast your going is ridiculous. with all the complaints i've read on the '05 cavs doing this, you think chevy would fix the issue...it's a potential safety hazard to have your gauges mess up that bad. *tr

Speedometer is inoperative. started by being intermittent with a random zero speed (50 mph when car stopped). would go up from there when car moved. intermittently it would work ok. now it is completely inoperative. been out of order for several months. apparently if this is fixed by a dealer it is $500-800. *tr

In dec 2008, temperature gauge starting reading hot but read normal a few days later. it became erratic for about a week then started pointing to the right of hot and kept moving further clockwise until it was in the 6 o'clock position and stayed that way for a couple months. now (mar 2009) it is in the 4 o'clock position and prevents the speedometer needle from moving past it. within a few moments driving, the speedometer needle then drops back to 0 until the car slows below the speed where the temperature needle stopped it. upon re-accelerating the speedometer needle attempts to operate somewhat normally until it is stopped again by the temperature needle. then it drops back to 0 after a few moments. many other people say they eventually experience failure of all gauges in the cluster. a recall needs to be issued before someone gets killed because a driver loses control after loss of power due to a condition that could have been prevented if the gauges worked properly (out of gas, excessive temperature etc.) everyone is encouraged to submit their own complaint at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and sign up with mycarstats.com to track this issue. *tr

All the gauges on my 2005 chevrolet cavalier have stopped working. the fuel gage was the first to stop working, followed by the rest of the gauges. the speedometer no longer works and it is a safety issue because i have no idea what speed i am going, how much fuel i have, if the engine is overheating, etc. i have searched online and have found multiple reports of the same problem. chevrolet has recalled other vehicles for this exact problem, so obviously it is an issue they can correct. i have waited to hear about a recall, but now that my speedometer has failed i can not wait any longer. *tr

The speedometer has gone haywire. it gets stuck at the far right end showing over 110 mph when i'm driving only 20 mph. when completely stopped, it will show 60 to 70 mph as the speed. once in a great while, it will work for a few minutes or so. i do not know how fast i am actually going and this is a very real safety hazard. i've been told i might have to replace my dash and this could be very costly- i have only 26,000 miles on my 2005 cavalier, have owned for less than 4 years, and have 2 years yet to pay on my loan. *tr

Speedometer is no longer working correctly, it now comes to rest anywhere from 30-60 when car is not moving, it does increase as speed increases but does not decrease at the same rate, causing the speedometer to register above the limit of the dial. horn does not work via the steering wheel, the horn does sound with locking and panic buttons. dealer informed me that this is not covered under warranty and that there are no recalls for speedometer, and that the cost would be $650 he was able to tell me this without looking up any information, sounds to me like they have replaced quite a few instrument panels recently. *tr

The tach in the instrument cluster is not displaying the correct engine speed. the engine can be turning 800-900 rpm at idle and the tachometer is showing 0 rpm or below. as engine speed increases, the tach needle does increase normally but the reading is still invalid. this problem seems to be intermittent in frequency which makes the tachometer a very unreliable source of information for the driver. *tr

I purchased a new 2005 chevy cavalier, and around 60,000 miles i started having problems with the speedometer sticking going down the highway, i would look down and speedometer is reading over 110 mph, when i turned the car off the speedometer would read 70 mph, this happened every once in a while. this is dangerous as you never know what your actual speed is. it would go back to zero after a few days. after dealing with this for a few months, i noticed the other day that my fuel gauge is doing the same thing, when the fuel needle went clear to the right of full, it had my temp gauge needle hung up. knowing that none of my gauges now appear to be working correctly i took it to our local dealership yesterday to be put on the computer to see what the problem was(told to do so by gm, to see if there was anything they could do to help with the repair cost). they told me that it was the programming in the dash cluster had been knocked out of whack, and that they had reprogrammed the dash cluster and everything was fine, said a high voltage surge had caused the disruption. i drove the car out of town today and when i parked the car in the driveway my speedometer is reading 70mph and my fuel gauge is stuck at 3/4 of a tank. cost me $113 for nothing yesterday. it is a wonder that no one has been in a wreck or injured from having to pull to the side of a highway because they ran out of fuel or realized something is wrong with their gauges. general motors has known about this issue for along time and refuses to do a recall on these bad cluster panels. i am being told to replace the cluster panel will cost me at least $550. i will call gm tomorrow and tell them reprogramming did not fix the problem, but they already know this, because the representative from gm called today to see what the problem was and my husband told him, he said that reprogramming doesn't fix the cluster problem. gm needs to fix this problem, it is defective parts. *tr

First the tachometer redlined about 2 years ago. mechanic said it's not really an important instrument so ignore it (it sticks constantly now). however, beginning of 2009, the temperature gauge started reading hot and sticking. about november the speedometer joined in and is sticking.*tr

The instrument gauges in our 05 cavalier are not working properly. the speedometer will sometimes fall from the car speed of 65 down to 0 and swing back up to 65 again. the other instrument gauges have started doing the same. we have had many safety issues with the power windows from the first day we bought this car. the drivers side window has no power at all. there is a 5 inch gap at the top, and sometimes the window will fall down even further when driving on the highway. i have done research on the web and found that this is a very common problem with the 05 chevy cavaliers. i previously asked gm to help me fix this drivers side window hazard, but they wanted me to be the one to take action. others that i have spoken with on the web have had the motors replaced by an authorized dealer at no cost. all of my web browsing & researching of this matter was consistent. the motors are defective. and the cost of the window motor plus labor was over $500.00 per window. that doesn't include fixing any electrical problems that may be wrong. i asked for our drivers side window to be repaired by chevrolet so that we could drive in safety with no sudden distractions or hazards. recently, the rear drivers side window has started moving up & down very slowly and we are afraid it is also going to need repair. *tr

Have 2005 cavalier with 59,000. started having problems with speedometer at about 51,000 miles. speedometer would come to rest anywhere from 30 to 110 when care is not moving. then it would show 80 or so mph when i was only going around 20 to 25. it is now stopped at pegged all the way over . then the tack started acting up, it would move all over the gauge. it too is now holding at 1000 rpm even when i am going around 70 mph. now the fuel gauge is all over the place too. all this within about 10,000 miles. what next, is the temp gauge going to go hay wire?????? i have talked with repair shop and they have told me that chevrolet has been having this problem with their gauges for around three years , since 2002 model. if this is such a wide spread problem, why hasn't chevrolet done a recall on the replace of the gauge cluster. or are they only looking to make a profit from the innocent customers who have the misfortune to have bought a cavalier. the chevy dealer told me that they have replace quite a few of these problems. this repair is not cheap, dealership wanted around $600 dollars to fix the problem. i tried putting of the repair since i could almost judge how fast i was going. that was till i got a ticket. now that the gas gauge is going hay wire, looks like i will have to fork out the money to fix this problem before i run out of gas some where on the highway, or my wife runs out of gas in some bad neighbor. sure don't want any problems like that. why doesn't chevy do a recall since they know about this problem and have know about it for a long long time. chevrolet is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth. i am a sixty one year old male and have always drove a chevy. but maybe, just maybe i might have to change my way of thinking about the chevy build tuff.??????? get chevrolet off their rears and lets fix this problem and make your customers happy. *tr

2005 chevy cavalier 2.2l, 33k miles, shortly after purchasing my car the speedometer stopped working. my mechanic told me the gauge cluster was faulty after replacing the speed sensor. i of course called the dealer and they forwarded me to chevy customer support. i told them about the problem and they denied any help with the issue and told me to take it to a shop. i was not pleased with this but i came to accept it and scheduled time and tried to set aside around 400$ for the repair. before i could get paid and take my car into the shop i exited an off ramp or exit ramp that was 30mph limit. i had been following a car to work so i'm not speeding hoping that they are not, and i began to slow down for the turn and began to exit but at this point i really didn't know how fast i was going but i thought i had slowed to what i thought was 30mph but i ended up taking the turn too fast and slammed into and up over a curve and into a wall which deployed the air bags and shattered the windows out on my passenger side. i unfortunately got cut up pretty bad by the glass on the left side of my face leaving me scarred. i feel lucky to be alive. i have read online about the speedometer problem and i've read over 100 out of the 1000s of complaints/reports of people loosing the speedometer shortly after purchasing their 2005 chevy cavalier and many of them report feeling scared or uneasy about driving their cars and i don't blame them. i feel the car is dangerous with out a speedometer or any vehicle for that matter and i feel truly sorry for people who simply can't afford the 400$ - 600$ repair to fix this and are forced to drive with the fear and anxiety of not knowing how fast they are going. i could have died and believe people probably have died as a result of this but i doubt there have been any investigations regarding the functionality of the speedometer or gauge cluster before the wrecks. please help. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cavalier. while driving approximately 35 to 55 mph on normal road conditions; pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal and there was an unintended increase in the acceleration. the engine revved extremely high which caused the abs, engine, and traction control warning light indicators to illuminate on the instrument control panel intermittently. immediately after applying pressure to the brake pedal, the vehicle began driving normally. an independent mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the front driver and passenger power window mechanism also failed without warning. the window motor was replaced; however, when the window was activated the response time was slow which may have caused the window shield wipers to malfunction. the speed odometer and rpm gauges displayed inaccurate readings which could be related to the vehicle intermittently exhibiting reduce engine power. the contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. the vehicle has not been repaired. the contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 49,000 and the current mileage was 74,400.

Having several problems with cluster. first had problems with the temperature gauge. sometimes would not budge from cold even after driving 30 miles. then speedometer completely messed up. sometimes it would work, but usually it would show that i was driving 110 mph. finally i just replaced the entire cluster board. worked properly for one day, but broke again next day. at least the temperature is accurate. but i have to depend on my gps daily to know how fast i'm driving. occasionally it works properly, but only for a short period of time. and here recently my odometer is going crazy. actual mileage is accurate, but trip mileage continually resets itself and often appears on its own, without me pushing the button. sometimes flashes on and off for no reason, even after car has been turned off. *tr

First the gas gauge went hay-wire, when it's full the gauge could say empty or it could be at about half a tank past full. then the speedometer went. usually hangs down at the bottom of the dial. now the rpm gauge is starting to go. some times it just keeps going higher and higher, other times it will hardly register anything. *tr

I saw that my reverse tail lights were not lighting up when i put the car in reverse. i took it to the dealer where i bought the car michael automotive in fresno ca and they told me i would have to pay them $110 to have it diagnosed even though my car has less then 30,000 miles on it and bought it brand new less then 2 years ago. due to the fact that it was in a minor fender bender. i told them it was not even rear-ended and it could not be the cause of the problem and they insisted it might be and to pay them. i took it to an independent electrical shop and they concluded that it was a switch board under the dash and in no way could have been hurt due to a minor wreck. i told the dealer this and he still refuse to fix it under my warranty. i had the repair done at an independent shop, and now chev. will not reimburse me for the work, because they told me not having those lights "is not a safety concern" i think very much otherwise and every light on a car that tells other drivers my intentions is very important! *tr

I purchased a 2005 chevy cavalier in october 2005. my car was purchased with bad or no shocks and within the first 1 to 2 years my trunk interior light blew off the wire sounding like a bomb. then my driver rear door was not able to open (due to the linkages). shortly after that the passenger rear door would not shut because the latch stuck (had to bungy strap it) then got it fixed to shut then it would not open (due to linkages) both front doors are messed up as well. ( drvier side difficult to open and poassenger side does not always catch when you shut it). my radio does not shut off when driver door is open like it should. my interior bulb had to be taken out due to never shutting off after doors were closed. my driver window makes noise when opening it.(manual window crank). my guages do not work properly either. i contacted gm and they said to take my car in to have it checked out and repaired but i can not afford the work to be done, the price for a rental, or to miss work. i had the car for 6.5 years (almost) but the age of the car should have ntohing to do with everything going wrong with the linkages and electrical. passengers have to crawl over the front seat to get into the back. any information is appreciated. best way to contact me is email and i will respond if a number is left. i need answers to what can be donefinancially i can not afford anything. i believe that i may have been sold a lemon. i had to replace my trunk latch due to it not wanting to close. *tt
