Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2002 Buick Regal

I was traveling on the expressway at 70 mph and i set the cruise control the vehicle was accelerating up a hill and then continued to accelerate to about 90 mph before i noticed what was really happening. it took a lot of effort to get the vehicle stopped and when i put the vehicle in neutral it kept the throttle open and was revving the engine. when i got the vehicle in park and popped the hood to check throttle cables it finally released and started to idle normal again.(the cruise control system was shut off as soon as i noticed the problem but did not change the way the car was acting.) *js
