Tl* the contact owned a 1999 buick regal. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate without warning. the contact pulled over to observed the vehicle and noticed smoke coming from the hood before the vehicle engulfed into flames. the fire department extinguished the fire. a police or fire report was not filed. the contact did not sustain any injuries. the vehicle was destroyed. the vin was included in the nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not made aware of failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
A clip that holds the accelerator pedal in position fell off. the vehicle would not accelerate until the pedal was returned to its proper position and the clip was replaced. i feel there needs to be a better retention mechanism to hold the accelerator pedal in position. this could be a major safety concern if this failure were to occur during a passing manuever or other circumstances.
