Recently reported EXTERIOR LIGHTING problems on 2006 Audi A4

Vehicle is equipped with adaptive headlights. when i turn the passenger side low beam goes out.

The headlights will flicker on and off, and have to be manually turned off and turned back on. repairs and replacements of lights did not solve the problem. complete removal of the xenon ballast and sealing the ballast seemed to correct the problem, and seems to be a defect in the manufacture of the ballast that causes moisture to invade, and short the headlights out.

2006 audi a4 quattro, a very annoying situation it also affects safety while driving in dark; i ignored it for few months as it got worst decided to take it in. they suggested to replace both igniters (xenon ballast) and bulbs. my audi dealer said that audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem. since my car was just out of warranty it would be about $1600. this problem is intermittent. it has been occurring a lot recently with the cold weather. i can't tell for sure whether it is temperature related. this is a common problem and most importantly a major safety

I get a "right dipped headlight" message and my right headlight goes out. i can correct the issue by turning the headlights off and back on but this is not safe after dark. the car has been doing this with increasing frequency especially over the past year. it occurs more when it's raining and more after dark-when you most need the headlights. it will cost me about $1600 to get the headlights replaced but apparently there is no guarantee that this will fix the issue. i have in no way damaged the headlights. we are the original owners of this car. this situation has been occurring for several years.

The left headlight drops and goes out intermittently

When driving at night right low beam will flicker and then go out. i get a warning icon referencing "right dipped headlight". if i turn the headlight switch from auto position to off position and then turn back to auto, the light will come back on. it will then stay on for a while and typically goes out again after some random time period causing me to repeat the process. i don't like doing this traveling at high speeds at night since i have to disable my headlights to get everything working again. i took it to the audi dealer and they did their guided fault tests and found no faults. they "believe" the igniter is faulty which is a $625 part plus labor to replace. i didn't go ahead with their suggestion since they could not guarantee that it would fix the problem. i'm reporting this since i believe a number of audi owners have had the same problem and audi doesn't seem to have a bulletin out on this to local dealerships and plus i believe it is a safety issue. i plan to call audi of america to see if they have any fix for this.

My headlights flicker while driving mostly the left but does intermittently go from left to right. unable to drive car at night. i just bought the car from drive time and the issue started as soon as i left the dealership

I was driving on highway at night going at 70 mph and suddenly i received left dip light warning and after 2 minutes received right dip light warning. i quickly have to reset the light after which both left and right lights came up. after some 20-30 min it happened again.there ere high chances of fatal crash at 70 mph on a highway at night. i was lucky enough to escape this. this issue is intermittent but extremely dangerous for safety of passengers.

Headlights will flicker / turn off intermittently when braking or traveling over small bumps resulting in a loss of vision at night. this will sometimes give the error "dipped headlight" and cause the headlight to turn off and remain off until it is reset.

The left headlight flickers and turns off. changing the bulb did not fix the problem and neither did changing the ballast. i found that there was a settled class action lawsuit however they said that the lawsuit extended the warranty for headlights to 5 years. the lawsuit was settled in 2013 and my car is a 2006 model so i am not sure how it could ever help me.

Headlight failure, right dipped headlight. intermittent problem seems to be related to slow speed and or vibration. multiple service visits at audi dealer, problem not resolved.

The driver side head light stop working

Headlights spontaneously go out while driving. sometimes just the left, sometimes just the right, sometimes both. the dash reads "right headlight dipped" or "left headlight dipped". to correct the error one must turn headlights completely off and then on again resulting in a few seconds of darkness. obviously this is very dangerous at night at highway speeds. there is no apparent repair for this problem and from extensive research seems to be a design issue. *tr

The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 quattro has a head light problem as follows: 1. the left headlight flickers 2. it then turns itself off 3. the message "left dipped headlight" appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. this problem happens every time i need to turn on my head lights, i took to dealer, they are not sure what part might be bad, so they recommend to replace almost all parts involve with that, and its costly. i checked on line to find a solution, i figured out it's not only me, there are hundreds of audi drivers having the same problem in here and even in europe. *tr

When i drive my car with the headlights on one randomly turns off and then i get a display in the dash that's says "left headlight dipped" this also happens to the right side. i have to turn the knob kn the dashboard on the off position and turn them back on the on position and they start working again. this is ridiculous and unsafe. please help. also my engine is burning oil very fast i just had an oil change and drove the car for 80 miles and the dip stick already shows half way full. i had the head gasket and vacuum pump gasket replaced but it still hasn't fixed the problem. *tr

Right after i purchased the car i started having problems, especially with the lights. my right headlight would consistently turn off, then some time later come back on. this would happen periodically, but the worst is when i am driving 60mph+ at night and lose all my lights. running lights, headlights, high beams, fog lights, all of it. this happens consistently every week. about a month after purchase my right headlight went out and never came back on. i received an error on my dash that states "right dipped headlight." i checked it out and decided to change the bulb. well, i did and that didn't work. i looked up more into it online and it's quite an expensive fix, and it's not guaranteed to even work. my headlight is out and about every week sometimes multiple times a week my lights completely go out unexpectedly. this is a huge problem with lots of people i discovered on google. *tr

August 2014, driving at night, highway speeds (65mph+) both left and right headlights flickered and went out, no illumination. took several tries to reset by light control switch. would reset, then flicker and both headlights out. very dangerous situation, was close to home and able to get there ok. vehicle is in at service for repair. *tr

Headlight went out caused light to come on. *tr

I was driving and had the right headlight go out. the fault indicator stated that the right dipped headlight had a fault, then that the bulb was bad. i kept driving, as i thought that i could see well enough with the left light. after a while, the light came back on. shortly after that, the same thing happened with the left dipped headlight. again, i kept driving, as i thought that i could see well enough with the right light. shortly after that, i entered the interstate, and increased my speed to about 65 mph, and drove in the middle lane as i anticipated going to the left side when the road split in about three miles and then exiting shortly afterward. then both lights went out. i had to signal to go to the right side of the road, through two lanes of fairly heavy traffic, and stopped. luckily, another driver who had noticed that i was having problems offered to drive slowly in front of me to allow me to continue until i could get off the highway. i thought that i would be able to drive slowly on off-highway streets to get home, but both lights came back on. since that time, i have had three other similar incidents. i am afraid to drive the car on the highway at night. *tr

Both headlights keep going out at random times. sometimes it says right dipped headlight and sometimes left dipped headlight and sometimes both. *tr

I was driving on i-45 s to houston and at 9 pm, i tried turning my front fog light on as it was getting foggy occasionally. i was at 75 mph speed on right lane, all of a sudden all lights went out, i immediately pulled over to the median and after playing around some kind of light came back, drove to nearest exit to gas station about a mile further and checked all lights, it was working fine now. i have read similar kind of complaint here and not sure if it is getting attention. does death has to occur before nhsta and audi listen to this problem. 75 mph in interstate at night without lights on, can you imagine my situation. it can easily cause death and damage. fix this problem because it is not bulb issue, it is manufacturer defect. *tr

Headlight flickers then goes out. when car is restarted the light works but then goes out when driving again. *jb

The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 has a safety issue and is a very dangerous problem: 1. the left headlight flickers 2. it then turns itself off 3. the message "left dipped headlight" appears if i turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few seconds to minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. this problem is intermittent. a number of other drivers seem to have this problem as well as evidenced by the comments on several other forums and speaking with the audi dealer. i was told no "campaign" has been issued. *tr

Left headlight/parking light dipped. extremely unreliable signal. flickered the bulb and shut off. if you switch off the light and restart, it is on for a minute and again the same. *tr

Both headlights shut off at any time. error message says left/right dipped headlamp. it seems like a design/engineering flaw. this is a dangerous safety issue, especially at night. this could result in death, injury, and monetary fines from the police. there should be an immediate recall to fix the problem. *tr

The front headlights keep flickering on and off while driving.audi: there are two separate conditions that both occur in vehicles with bi-xenon, with or without adaptive lighting (afs): one xenon light on either side sporadically flickers or flashes and goes out. when headlamps are turned off and on again or at ignition cycle, the headlamps may function properly or exhibit the same behavior; one xenon light on one side fails permanently. *tr

Headlights flicker and sometimes emit a warning that states "tipped headlight" which triggers the car to immediately turn the affected headlight off--this can occur while the car is parked or in motion. it usually happens to me when i am driving, but there is no pattern and it seems to be getting worse. the only way to fix it is to turn the headlights off and then back on, which is very dangerous!!! there is currently a class action lawsuit against audi where they will refund a portion of your repairs for the faulty hid headlights on the 2006 audi a4, but audi still claims that they are not liable and not at fault (http://www.hidheadlightsettlement.com/). please force audi to recall this headlight problem--i should not have to pay my local dealer close to a thousand dollars for something that is obviously defective and should be recalled due to safety reasons (the class action suit only refunds repairs prior to august 2013 and won't even cover the entire cost). there are a lot of 2006 audi a4's out there with this problem--the complaints are all over multiple message boards, and there were obviously enough people out there with this problem or the class action suit would not have been approved. *tr

The vehicle for the past several months has had head lamp problems. i will be driving along and all of a sudden one of the headlamps will flicker and then go out. a warning on the dash will say left (or right) headlamp dipped. the only way to alter the situation is to turn the headlamp off and then back on at speed. this is a very dangerous situation. the dealer has said they cannot duplicate the situation and therefore cannot fix it. an internet search revealed that many audi a4 owners have been experiencing the same problem on a regular basis. it is beyond belief that audi, a manufacturer that prides itself on safety, has not investigated this problem and come up with a fix. i believe a recall should be initiated and audi should be required to fix this very dangerous problem/defect. *tr

After the headlights were activated, the left hand light flickered then went out. the display area gave me a warning that the headlight bulb was out. it happens each night and is remedied by deactivating the headlights then turning them on again. i had both headlights changed in june, but the right hand headlight does the same now. *tr

In regards to hid headlights on 2006 audi a4 models and speaks to my exact frustration & non-action taken by audi to resolve this issue as i feel it is the manufacturers responsibility and not that of the owners. several years ago when i first purchased this audi, one of my headlights would occasionally flicker while i was driving, & then produce an error code: "left dipped headlight." the problem eventually went away.the bulbs still produce light, but while driving both headlights will flicker,"right dipped headlight" and "left dipped headlight". one way to get the lights to start working again is to turn them off and on which is extremely dangerous and causes me to pull over for the safety of myself and others. the bulbs are somewhat new and all the headlight parts are oem, and this becomes extremely dangerous as it will happen while i'm driving at night in the dark. i understand from online blogs that several other 2006 audi a4 owners have the same problem, which ties back to the headlight assembly. i feel strongly that nhtsa should look into this issue given that headlights are an important function of a car while and this is a serious hazard for both the driver and other drivers when driving in the dark. i have recently serviced my car and felt i had no choice but to take this matter into my own hands and have faith that the audi dealer service will resolve this. although, i have taken it there several times before, and they said they had no issues with the headlamps and could not recreate the problem. today, they seem to have figured it out but it will be very costly. i strongly believe audi as a manufacturer should be responsible for some sort of recall or reimbursement for any services done regarding the hid headlamps as it is obviously not an isolated incident. thank you for your consideration. *tr

Upon initial start of the vehicle, just about every start, the left headlight will flicker and then shut off and show a left dipped headlight on the display. shutting off the lights and turning them back on allows the bulb to turn on again, but the flickering keeps happening until the light warms up then it stops. the bulb will repeatedly flicker and shut off causing a serious safety concern. *tr

2006 audi a4 dipped headlight / flicker / problem. left headlight will flicker and go out, happens at random, at speeds from 0 to 70 mph. audi dealer said the gas level in the headlamp is low, recommended not to repair at this time, to address, turn lights off and back on when it occurs. have had to do this multiple times within a 10 minute period to keep the headlamp on. *tr

Several years ago when i first purchased this audi, one of my headlights would occasionally flicker while i was driving, and then produce an error code: "left dipped headlight." the problem eventually went away. now, two years later, with the bulbs still producing light, while driving both headlights will flicker, generally when associated with a bumpy road, and then will suddenly turn off, producing two error codes "right dipped headlight" and "left dipped headlight". the bulbs are somewhat new and all the headlight parts are oem, and this becomes extremely dangerous as it will happen while i'm driving at night in the dark. i understand from online blogs that several other 2006 audi a4 owners have the same problem, which ties back to the headlight assembly. i feel strongly that nhtsa should look into this issue given that headlights are an important function of a car while and this is a serious hazard for both the driver and other drivers when driving in the dark. thank you for your consideration. *tr

I was driving home and right headlight started flickering, almost like a strobe light then all of a sudden the light goes out then comes back on by its self. then goes back off and stays off so i pull off the road. i look at the light and it is still out. i turn my lights off then back on and it works like new, but it keeps happening. this is very dangerous. what happens if both light goes out and this happens, its the manufacturer fault not mine. there should be a recall or do something about this before someone gets hurts, or lose their life. *tr

While driving at night, at highway speed, the driver side headlight dipped/lowered. the headlight went dark then turned off. at the same time the passenger side light started to flicker, and seemed like it was about to fail also. i immediately pulled to the side if the road, as i could not see the road. after some trouble shooting i turned off the headlight switch and turned is back on and the drivers headlight returned to normal. the passenger side still flickers and vibrates. this appears to be a major safety concern as my headlights went off at night. *tr

First, is was only the right headlight, but now it's both. the problem is the lights would flicker then turn off. after the lights turn off even the high beams won't turn on. the headlights turn back on when the lights are turned off and then on again. *tr

Having a huge issue with my 2006 audi a4 2006 s-line us spec, i keep getting headlight dipped on the left and right headlight and this happens 4 to 5 time on my drive to and from work. i'm stationed in germany and have to use the auto bahn and sometimes drive around 100mph with traffic and when my headlights go out its very dangerous not only for myself but the other drivers. this issue is happening to loads of audi drivers. the xenon bulbs have been replaced once and they still have the same issue and the bulbs are not cheap and not the issue like audi says. the audi dealership had no idea what was wrong with my lights until i was able to take a picture of the left and right headlight out on the dash. they said to replace the light bulbs which i have already done and don't want to get ripped off. audi needs to have this issue fixed asap before it kills someone. *tr

The left headlight dips occasionally, without warning, randomly. then you have to turn off the lights to hopefully correct/reset the headlight. it's clearly a safety hazard. *tr

The xenon hid headlights on my 2006 audi a4 are constantly flickering and going out. i've tried turning them off an on several times and no luck, they continue to go out. sometimes both headlights will go out at once, essentially limiting my visibility.this has been going on for over 20,000 miles and no solution from audi has been given so it is essential that this issue be resolved through a recall, considering several people are experiencing the same issue. it is a serious safety issue and it is extremely frustrating. *kb

The right dipped headlight flickered and then went out. turning the lights on and off, restores the right headlight, but is a little dangerous at speed. this is a problem and in bad weather very dangerous. *tr

The car was parked overnight. once the temperature reach approximately 40 degrees, the brake lights activated, but deactivated when the car was started and i pressed the brake pedal. over the course of a few months, this malfunction completely drained my battery. *tr

When car hits a bump or dip in the road, the right front self-leveling headlight system sticks and shuts off the headlight, and show a "right dipped headlight" message on dash. stopping the car, shutting off the lights, and restarting usually resets the lights but it usually happened again soon after. this frequent occurrence is a safety issue suddenly being without one headlight driving at night. *tr

Flickering headlights. headlights flicker or fail, especially in cold weather. numerous people on internet have complained about this same problem and the dealers charge ridiculous prices for attempts to fix it. clearly, there is a flaw in design from audi and also a big safety issue. please help. thank you. *tr

The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 quattro regularly flickers, then turns itself off, then indicates a "left dipped headlight" along with an indicator that the light bulb has failed. this has happened on several occasions, intermittently. if i turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. i have taken it into the audi dealership, and they have said that audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem. *tr

I started the car and both headlights were flickering. i proceeded to drive down the street and they continued to flicker for approximately 1 mile causing decreased visibility. *tr

The left xenon hid headlights on my 2006 audi a4 is constantly flickering and going out. you need to turn it on and off several times for it to stay on, but only for a short period of time. very annoying and dangerous. sometimes both headlights will go out at once, essentially limiting my visibility. as stated in other complaints filed, this is a serious safety issue and it is extremely frustrating. *tr

My headlights seems to be turning on and then off. sometimes it will say " left dipped headlight " and the headlight failure picture will go up. sometimes its " right dipped headlight ". sometimes both headlights go out. the audi tech's. can't seem to resolve the issue and it's starting to cost me money. i feel that this is a safety issue as i don't have the visibility i should at night plus i am distracted as i have to turn the headlight switch on and off until it works. *tr

The headlight (left or right) will suddenly flicker and then go out. if i turn off the lights and then turn them on again, the problem will correct itself. *tr

Left & right dipped headlight headlamp. happens daily. it's a saftey concern when driving at night. *tr
