Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2000 Volvo S80

Driving in the city and when trying to stop on a traffic light the brakes became hard and engine was not running well. when i tried to drive off in the green light the speed control of the gas pedal was very chaotic. i got a message of engine system service required. i took the car to the local volvo dealer and he diagnosed a faulty throttle etm asking 2000 $ to replace. after researching i found that there was already a recall on that by volvo and when i asked the dealer he said that this was true but my car was more than 10 years old ( although he could have informed me about that in the first place). he informed me that a software service on the etm of my car was done in 2006 ( after the recall?) but this did not fix the problem as apparently the problem is with the etm design ( faltering potentiometer). this car is very dangerous and it will probably go to the junkyard, but we should be concerned by all volvos remaining on the street with faulty etm's, which the numerous complaints filed at nhtsa show. *tr

I was driving along a busy street, when i came to a stop sign the brakes where hard to push, when i finally stopped the car, you could still fill the car trying to move forward i took my foot of the brakes and the car sped up on it's on reaching close to 40 mph again i was barely able to stop the car do to a stiff brake pedal. i put the car in park and shut it off, once i restarted the car it was sputtering and wouldn't idle correctly every time i put the car in gear it would shut off now i'm getting an error message that says service engine system urgent. *tr

On winding downhill road (1500 ft. drop in 2 miles) car went from 45 to non-optional 20 mph due to failure throttle body. part know to suddenly fail was subject of lawsuit about 2005 which settled in limited time free replacement now expired. should have been a recall as now permits safety issue to continue indefinitely in automobile type/model typically driven decades. note: car when slowed backed up downhill traffic on the decent is the major cause fatal and other accidents in the area, and set stage for out-of-control slowing accidents. alternative of pulling off and requesting tow at least as equally hazardous.

I have a 2000 volvo s 80 and it was sold to me by a dealer this car has so many problems and i feel that when i took the car to volvo they tried to charge me 6400 just to fix the problem like abs sensors, stc sensor , throttle etc i feel its un fair i only had the car for 3days what can i do. *tr

The car throttle is faulty. my car revs to high rpm when idle and at low speeds. it also is in limp mode. when this problem was found and recalled in 2006 i brought the car in for the software upgrade, but the car is still trying to lunge forward at low speeds and revving in idle. i was told by volvo customer care there was nothing they will do for the problem since the software had been upgraded even though the throttle is faulty. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. the contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle independently decelerated to 20 mph and the vehicle would not respond to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was shut off and restarted but the failure was still present. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised that the vehicle probably needed a new computer but the mechanic was not positive that the repair would correct or was causing the failure. the contact then called the manufacturer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) but was informed that the vehicle had previously been repaired according to the recall. the vehicle was not further repaired. the current mileage was approximately 166,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 162,000.

2000 volvo s80. transmission failure with only 109,000 miles. i have always done the required maintenance and service on the vehicle, which included a transmission flush in 2003. i had no prior warnings, no slipping, nothing. the transmission fluid is clean, at the level it is supposed to be at, no leaks, and no warning "check engine" or "transmission" lights came on. my mechanic said that due to the sudden failure with no warning, it is most likely something internal that just broke and that i have to get a new transmission. *tr

I own a 2000 volvo s-80 t6, which i have had nothing but problems with. before i had it, my son owned it and also had problems with it. one is that the vehicle doesn't start, it stalls, and it surges forward or in reverse. all since 2005. just last month i ran into my garage door and several times almost was involved in vehicle crashes due to it either surging forward or dying on me. i read how there is a possible recall on 2001 models, so why does it not include 2000 yrs. does it take an accident with lives lost before anything is done to correct these problems. the vehicle has been taken in to the dealership and i have been told that the problem has been taken care of. so why is it still happening? the last incident happened on january 3rd of 2009, where i ran into my garage, caused from the car surging. the vehicle has been in for the same problem on numerous occasions. *tr

The events that are occurring are that my vehicle will die on me, at times it won't start, and it lunges forward as i start the engine. it is also idling very high. it happens almost daily. i have had my vehicle checked for any recalls, and have had sensors replaced several times. now my vehicle is smelling of gas as i try and start it. i had it repaired on 7/22/09, as the vehicle wouldn't pass smog, at which time apparently they replaced a sensor at that time. *tr

My 2000 volvo s80 has failed to accelerate properly. in idle, it sometimes works fine, but at other times it idles erratically. several times recently, i've needed to accelerate quickly, but the car hesitated and displayed the check engine light. a few times, i attempted to accelerate anyway, and the light would begin to blink, and the car would still sputter. this created a dangerous situation for me and my family. i had the spark plugs replaced but that did not fix the problem. i learned recently that this is indicative of a failed etm (electronic throttle module), which has been an issue with this model car. *tr

My 2000 s80 t6 stalls in traffic and loses power while driving. whenever i stop at a traffic light, i'll have to step harder on the accelerator in order to avoid the vehicle behind me from hitting my car.sometimes it jerks so bad i feel that engine may fall off.there's no engine light on or anything. i have called volvo and was told the problem is etm but has been replaced on my car according to their records. i have taken the car to the dealership and had different components tested out and fixed but that did not solve the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. the contact noticed that when the vehicle was at a stop, the rpms fluctuated up and down. the contact also noticed that when he did not have the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle would suddenly surge forward. he experienced the failure with what he assumed to be the transmission for a year before taking it to the dealership . the authorized dealer was informed about the failure but the contact was told that the repair costs would be at his expense. he called the manufacturer and was informed that because the vehicle was no longer under warranty, he would be responsible for repair costs. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who cleaned the throttle body. the contact noticed no problems until recently. however, the contact began experiencing the same failure. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000 and the current mileage was approximately 125,000. the consumer stated the vehicle has a defective throttle body that makes the vehicle have an erratic idle when stopped or going very slow. as a result, it would lunge forward. updated 05/12/10.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. the contact experienced two failures listed as recalls for the suspension and vehicle speed control. the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in the recalls. he is very upset with being excluded from the recalls because the failures are identical. while proceeding to make a left turn at approximately 5 mph, the tire detached from the front driver side of the vehicle. the contact felt that this was a very serious safety hazard. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the wheel axle, lower control arm, and upper ball joint were replaced. the contact also observed the failure of the speed control mechanism. while driving between 55-60 mph and applying pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle decelerated and hesitated. this failure occurs only during highway driving. the vehicle has not been repaired for this failure. the recall numbers were unknown. the failure mileage was 53,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

Approximately 6 months ago vehicle began erratic throttle while on speed control (surging). dealer serviced vehicle with software update and temporarily resolved problem. problem has returned as well a spontaneous stalling, and very erratic variance in throttle pedal position and acceleration. stalling has occurred with throttle pedal release entering turn lane - no power steering nor brake boost. dealer has serviced vehicle - cleaned sensors related to throttle position module - with no improvement. wife is refusing to drive vehicle she now refers to as scary. *nm

My 2000 volvo s80 2.9 vehicle started surging then hesitating, back & forth, at all speeds up to 70 mph interstate speeds while cruise control was on and off. when cruise control is on, after about 5-10 miles, cruise control turns itself off & car suddenly starts decelerating. after about 1 week of this, on 6/30/06 performance reduced message appeared. on 6-24-06 engine service required message appeared for a short time. after stopping and turning motor off for about 30 minutes to read owner's manual, started motor again & message has not reappeared. when cruise turns itself off, you cannot turn cruise back on until motor is stopped & restarted, then you can turn cruise control back on for about 5-10 miles then it will go back off. surging and hesitation continues with steady pressure on accelerator (trying to maintain constant speed) and cruise control off. *jb

2000 volvo s-80 t6 , etm part replaced in dec 2004, in conjunction with complaint number 10145678; returned car to dealership on saturday 5/13/06 to have software recall upgrade performed due to same conditions as present in 2004 incident - vehicle stopping unexpectedly in traffic. car since saturday has continued to stop in traffic 5 times, car was returned to service, now the service department is saying the etm is ok , but i may have to pay to have the problem diagnosed- and could be another malfunctioning part that they did not inform me about on last service visit. they are expecting me to pay for part and labor replacement - which i believe is still in conjunction with the malfunction of the etm. my wife and family are afraid to get into this car. *nm

I purchased a 2000 volvo s80 from carmax in feb. 2006. the car only had 26000 miles on it so i thought it was a great deal. i contacted the manufacturer to see if any and all recalls had been performed on the vehicle. they said the only thing needed to be done was to have the electronic throttle module system to be upgraded in the cars computer. on 5-11-06 the volvo dealer performed the upgrade. within one hour of picking up the car it began to rev and surge with the air conditioner on as if the throttle was sticking. after parking it to run an errand i tried to start the car and it would start but then immediately rev up and then die. i had to get it towed to carmax which it was warranted under. now carmax had the vehicle towed to the volvo dealer to have the electronic throttle control worked on. the volvo dealer diagnosed the problem as needing to replace the e.t.c. module, which they did. now i drive the car home on 5-16-06. after two hours of the car sitting at my house i attempt to go somewhere but the car starts and immediately begins to rev like before and then dies. i will attempt to drive the car to the dealer tomorrow 5-17-06 to be fixed again. *nm

My 2000 volvo s80 t6 stalls (typically in junctions) after 120k maintenance service / recall 155 etm software upgrade. the service was performed on 5/12/06 at authorized volvo dealer (128volvo.com). since the service, the car stalled 5 times, and has been to the dealership three more times, without a fixing the problem. the dealer rejects my complains and wants this issue to "happen more frequently before taking action". sudden stalls almost lead me to a traffic accident already at least once; the dealership isn't concerned about traffic safety. *nm

A 2000 volvo s80 t-6 would on occasion change speed and jerk without warning. the problem initially was sporadic but became increasingly worst over a period of three weeks. a volvo dealership checked the vehicle and found the electronic throttle module was bad and needed replacement. repair cost exceed $1,200. ouch. *nm

I have a 2000 volvo s80 t6 with several etm or throttle control failures. i have had ist serviced twice and it continues to fail. my neighbor has the same problem. the vehicle stalls inadvertently and has stranded me in the middle of traffic where i narrowly missed being hit by a tractor trailer. my wife also was almost hit while making a left hand turn and stalling in the middle of an intersection. *nm

I have been having problems with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating as if it's not getting any gas when first beginning to drive it everyday. i have complained about this problem since purchasing this vehicle but the volvo repair shop have not been able to fix the problem and they say they do not know what the problem is. also my check engine light, stc light, and abs light keeps coming on. i have also noticed that when these lights come on my car becomes hard to steer sometimes. after checking into this problem i have found that many other volvo s80 's built around the same time as mine are having the same problems. i have complained about my car suspension making weird noises since having this vehicle and the volvo repair shop says they can not find any thing wrong but when enquiring with others who own volvo s80's, built around the same time as mine, many are saying they are having this problem also. the below information asks for an incident date but the problem with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating and being hard to steer occur often probably over 100 times. *nm

Re: vovlo s80 2000 model year; car independently accellerated while being driven the car surged when in idle, then when put into drive, it suddenly accellerated without my pressing the gas. i was able to stop the car using the brake. when i took my foot off the brake, the car again accellerated. i stopped the car again, and when i took my foot off the brake it accellerated a third time. i turned the car off. as i was in an open parking lot, i turned the car on again to see if the problem was repeatable. the car again surged in ide, then accellerated soon after my putting it in drive. i turned the car off and on again, and the problem repeated a third time. forty-five minutes later, the car was started without incident. it was brought to the volvo dealer, where the mechanics repeatedly tried to duplicate the problem without success. we left the car at the dealership for eight weeks, basically refusing to pick up the car until they found the problem and corrected it. volvo had a specialist look at the car, and the specialist was ultimately able to duplicate the problem. the specialist noted that the car was increasing, instead of decreasing, rpm's as it came to a stop. they cleaned the throttle module and updated the software for the throttle mechanism. we looked into volvo's known problem with this model and found that the electronic throttle module (etm) has frequently failed, causing cars to stall and accellerate unexpectedly. we obtained the service records of our (recently purchased, used) car and found that the etm had already been replaced due to problems reported by the previous owner in 2003. one week ago, when the car stalled. the incident date entered below is approximate, but i can find out the exact date if that would be helpful. *nm

In august 2005, we took our vehicle in for routine maintenance at 67500 miles. i am the primary driver of this vehicle and had noticed some problems which were discussed with the service department. this vehicle had stalled at parking lot speeds and it had been sputtering at take-off. my husband presented the service department with a publication from the highway safety board which discussed a problem with the throttle body on the volvo s80. as we were having the same problems described in this publication, my husband asked the service department to replace the throttle body on our vehicle. the service department was aware of the problem but as volvo had not issued a recall, they were not authorized to replace this without the volvo warranty company reviewing this issue with our vehicle. the warranty company did examine our vehicle, but declined to replace the throttle body at that time. on december 11, 2005 my family (husband and two children, ages 2 and 10 months) were traveling home to the atlanta area from nashville, tennessee. while driving this vehicle, i noticed that it began to accelerate and decelerate and then completely lost power. we were traveling on i-75 south at interstate highway speeds and were able to get to the shoulder of the road when this happened. unfortunately, we had to pull over onto the left shoulder as the two right lanes were in a construction zone. we were then endangered by traffic merging to the left which in some cases attempted to pass on the left shoulder. we had to have the car towed to nalley volvo in marietta, georgia which was approximately 34 miles from where we originally broke down. as this happened on a sunday evening and no rental car businesses were opened, we then had to get a taxi to take us the rest of the way to our home. on monday morning, my husband spoke with the service department about what had happened. the problem was diagnosed as a defective throttle body. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while stopping at a red light the vehicle stalled with no warning. the engine was restarted and again stalled. the vehicle was towed to a local dealership where the vehicle was inspected. the dealer determined that the throttle body needed cleaning and the software updated. after the repairs were made the vehicle was sold.*ak

I just bought a 2000 s80 volvo with 125k miles on it and it has been surging up and down when i slow down and sometimes while i driving down the interstate. just the last couple of days while slowing to turn into work it died nearly causing another car to rear end me. i has has also died a couple of more times today, luckily on a side street, both times while slowing down. i can see my tachometer surging up and down with the engine almost stalling out everytime i stop. i have been told this may be in part to a faulty throttle control modlue. please check into this for me as i am getting afraid of driving my car for fear of an accident. *nm

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2000 volvo s80 had repairs done on 11/10/05 for the electronic throttle module. he originally had the repair completed on 11/10/05. the contact stated that the recall was repaired again on 02/09/07, and he still hasdthe same problems with the vehicle. the dealership informed him that he would have to be fully responsible for the cost of the repairs himself. the contact will be filling a complaint with the manufacturer on 2/20/07, and will be sending in information needed for reimbursement for the 1st repair. the failure mileage was 7800, and the current mileage was 101000.*ak

My car started accelerating by itself. it would start to chug like it was going to cut off. there was little acceleration when i did give it the gas. i took it to the volvo dealer in milwaukee and had it fixed. the cost was just under $979.73. *jb

A 2000 volvo s80 throttle control module failed causing the car to suddenly decelerate. *nm

Several occurrences of vehicle stalling in traffic, restarting, but not staying started. vehicle surging at idle. after taken to shop (towed), we now have had our fourth electronic throttle body replaced in last 28 months. the dealership has also replaced the maf sensor and has cleaned the throttle on two occasions. my portion of repairs have already exceeded $2,770. dealership has acknowledged this is a known problem. they continue to "fix" the problem with the same replacement part. *jb

dt: the consumer stated that while driving at low speeds the vehicle would surge. this would also happen when stopping or when vehicle was in reverse. the check engine light illuminated, and the message read check exhaust system. the contact took the vehicle to a service dealer to be repaired. the dealer replaced the throttle body and the mass airflow. the replacements appeared to have corrected the problem. *ak (12/07/05) there were also times when the vehicle would nearly stall and have to be placed in neutral. *sc

I own a my 2000 volvo s80 2.9. upon driving in town the car suddenly lost acceleration and engine started shaking. the message reader prompted me to stop and restart the engine. well i did, in the turning lane, but it did not help. i pulled out of the cross section "shaking". my mechanic says the onboard computer prompts him to a faulty engine throttle module. well this car has only 48000 miles on it. on the same note: on my 1999 s70 glt at around 60000 miles the same part had to be replaced, because it shut down the cruise control time-to-time. *nm

200 s80 was accelerating spontaneously and lunging forward. the car crashed into a garage wall while coasting into a parking space, and the accelerator was not depressed. the electronic throttle module was replaced. the volvo dealership mechanic could not get the computer error code, or appreciate the symptoms when he test drove the vehicle, and had to call my local mechanic (who identified the faulty etm) for help. volvo will now reimburse all customers who paid for throttle module repair/replacement in the past. i found this out only after i went to my dealership's service department and lodged a complaint about the etm repair. *nm

I own a 2000 volvo s80 2.9 - vin: [xxx]. i had purchased the vehicle new from bridgewater volvo in nj on aug 15, 2000. i have 49,100 miles on the car and i have maintained the vehicle impeccably in the last 5 years of ownership. two weeks ago the car started stalling and the message display read "reduced performance". my wife uses the car to commute to work and the stalling of the car on the highways put her into a potentially dangerous situation. she was able to safely pullover and the car would re-start again every time it stalled. she finally got home and after the second day of the problems she left it in the garage and used the second car for commuting. she then took it to the volvo dealer in edison nj. volvo of edison diagnosed the problem and here is the direct qoute from their bill - "performance reduced light fault trace ecm 91a7 and abs 00b1-found internal fault in etm and brake pedal position sensor replace and download etm and brake pedal position sensor" since the car is no longer under warranty i had to pay the following amounts: parts - throttle body, gasket & sensor = $655.42 labor - $472.50 taxes = $67.68 total = $1,195.60 i called volvo customer service to complain about the pre-mature failures and their response was there is nothing they can do about it. i also stated that i am dissatisfied with their product quality and i may not consider buying another volvo product. the customer service rep told me that in that case volvo may not even consider reviewing my case as i may not consider buying another volvo. in addition to the above problem last year i had a cooling fan failure which was covered under warranty just before it expired. now i have never ever received a recall notice from volvo on any problems. i understand that there was a recall on the front suspension ball joints and i do not know if volvo during the routine service visits ever applied the recall fix. *nm updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of ...

I have a 2000 volvo s80 2.9 sedan. about one year ago, the car stalled as i was driving the vehicle. there was no warning sign it simply lost power and stalled. i was able to use the emergency brake to come to a stop and avoid and accident (at the time i had a 4 year old and a 2 year old in the car). the incident occurred close to my home, so after a brief period, i was able to start the car again and get it home. the next day it seemed fine and the dealership recommended an engine cleaner additive. about six month later the same thing happened to my wife after and she was also almost in an accident. she were able get the car started and get it home. after that the car seemed to surge from time to time. the dealer told me it was called "surging" and recommended a $ 1,600.00 repair job. i declined. today once again, the car, for no reason, stalled. i became aware the others have had this issue. i am submitting this complaint because my concern is that the vehicle may not be safe. *nm

Dt: while driving vehicle stalled and shut down at all speeds due to throttle module failure. it was replaced in february 2004, but currently problem recurred. *ak

The vehicle was not idling properly. while stopped at a stop light, the engine would speed up and slow down. when starting to move from a stop, the car would lurch forward as the engine speed increased. this resulted in numerous close calls of me having to stop suddenly before hitting the car in front of me, also increasing the chance of being hit from behind from cars as i stopped suddenly. the volvo dealer replaced the electronic throttle module as well as the mass air sensor to correct the problem. this is similar to the other complaints that have been reported about the etm on the volvo. *jb

Dt: the contact complained about throttle failure. the rpms will increase when the contact lets off the accelerator pedal. when the rpms decrease the engine will stall. the problem occurred ever time the contact drove the vehicle and at a variety of speeds. the manufacturer told him they knew what the problem was and how to fix it. the repairs have not been made. *ak

In mid 2005, i started having problems with my volvo s80 (yr 2000) idling at stop lights. the idle would fluctuate from 400 to 1100 rpms. at times this would cause my car to die. while it was a nuisance at stop lights, it started to fluctuate at higher rpms and three times while on the interstate going approximately 55 mph the car died and i have to put in neutral and restart while in rush hour traffic. i took to service place and they did a diagnostic, and removed and cleaned the throttle body before replacement. the following codes were found in the ecm 9160, 9150, 904c 903f 9040 and 130a. after they reset the faults and removed and cleaned the throttle body, they test drove the car and the same idle and (and it died) problems existed. they replaced the throttle body actuator assy, upgrade engine management software to work with new actuator. since they have replaced the electronic throttle body i have had zero idling problems to date. i have all copied of my paperwork if needed. *jb

As with a number of other postings on this site, i have a 2000 volvo s80 t6 and had a failure of the throttle body unit at about 72,000 miles on the car. i was traveling on the interstate in atlanta when i got the warning message that performance had been reduced. i called the volvo dealer, they stated to turn the car off and back on and the problem may correct itself. (they did say that i needed to bring the car in for them to look at.) the problem then was fixed for about 80 miles before i had failure again and had to have the car towed. they replaced the part and said it was not covered as a part of the "certified pre-owned" warranty. *nm
