Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

The "under hood fuse box" was replaced in may 2014 under recall #97am. when the weather turned cold the car began to get hard to start, the engine light came on, and when it turned very cold the car would not start at all. i took the vehicle back to dealer, they cleared the code and said if the code came back they would need to replace the "glow plug control module". when i came home i started searching the "tdi forums" for similar problems. i found others had the same issue and someone found the solution. when the fuse box was replaced, there is a little jumper (vw part number: 3c0-971-249) (cost $5.) that goes in a relay slot (r2) that sends power to a 50 amp fuse (sb27), that sends power to the "glow plug control module" (j179) that sends power to the glow plugs when the engine is below 18 degrees c, allowing the engine to start when cold (and without smoking). ***the problem is that there is no legend provided for the under hood fuse box, so no way to know if something is missing. this is also a safety hazard because if someone would pull a fuse and not pay attention, there is nothing to indicate where or what size of fuse to put back in. this could effect anything from headlights to abs. *tr

My vw jetta tdi had many problems since i purchased it. first, we had problems with the injection system imploding. they asked if we ever put in gasoline instead of diesel. i told them absolutely not. they wanted to charge me $6500 because car was out of warranty but service manager got vw to pay for it because i said i was going to get an attorney. on june 27, 2014 we had with an electrical problem where the battery was draining from a short in the radio modulator. the car had 101,348 miles. they fixed the problem which took 9 days to fix and cost $1238.56. i noticed the radio would stayed on with the key out of the car after that though. then we had the check engine, air bag, abs and traction lights on at 109,452. i took it to my service station on 11/28/2014, but he said the dealer had to program update the software and check the abs module for electrical problem. the dealer said it was the o2 sensor on number 2 cylinder. they found no problems with the air bag, abs module or traction control. they charged me $600. the lights were all off. on january 3, my 17 year old daughter and her girlfriend went to the movies last night with the car. it was lightly raining out. she left the movie theatre around 8:20 pm. she came up to an intersection that was turning red. she applied the brakes and skidded through the intersection hitting another vehicle that was crossing. she was doing about 40 mph. she said the car did not want to stop. she said there where lights on the dashboard when she was driving. people in the other car went to hospital. *tr

Driving down freeway at 61mph, engine turns off. no power steering or brakes while i changed lanes in heavy traffic to get to the shoulder of the road. car would not start and had to tow to the dealership. dealer replaced battery, primed fuel system, gave car back. after five days, check engine light came on, so i took car to dealership. they replaced glow plug control module and gave car back. driving down highway when car again dies, engine turns off without warning. i have to change lanes again with no power steering or brakes to get off the road. towed vehicle to dealership where they say the high pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced. this is a very scary and dangerous problem to have a car turn itself off while driving down the freeway. *tr

2009 jetta tdi sportwagen. during a panic stop to avoid an accident the abs and atc (traction control) dash indicator lights came on solid along with an alarm and the brake indicator light flashing on and off. during this panic stop both rear brakes locked. turning the ignition off and on reset the indicator lights. ten minutes later i attempted to duplicate the incident on a quiet side street by driving at 20 mph and hitting the brakes hard enough to engage the abs. once again the indicator lights came on and alarm sounded. dealer diagnosed problem as failure of the abs controller. research on internet indicated that this is a common problem with 2009 jettas with hundreds of similar occurrences. the part is $1750 plus labor to install brings total to $2200. the abs controller is not a wear item and should not be failing on a car which has 62,400 miles on it. the car has been dealer maintained and serviced since new. this was the first time the abs had been engaged other than during the winter on snow covered roads. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. while the vehicle was idling and attempting to accelerate, the contact heard an abnormal noise and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 57,000.

Fuse f16 melted in engine fuse box disabling all right side lights and turn signals. this is a common complaint and also subject to recall on 2009 tiguans. this is the same problem, a hard-coated fuse should be installed via a recall. *tr

While driving on freeway car completely shut-off. coasted to off-ramp, stopped car and then re-started it. dealer later diagnosed ignition switch problem (intermittent ignition switch faults logged) and recommended replacement of the ignition switch. *tr

Check engine light comes on frequently and when i take to dealer it is always a sensor problem i have also had some electrical issues replacing bulbs frequently. also while driving the shifting lights will all light up prnds, sometimes there is a loss of power. also one of the overhead light seems to have melted due to a high heat source of some kind.

Every light on the passenger side of the vehicle stopped working. at first this was intermittent but became permanent. i found the problem to be melted fuse (f16) in the engine compartment. *tr

Alternator failed without warning on 2009 jetta with 2.5 liter engine. vehicle had about 64,000 miles on it at time of alternator failure. *tr

Fuse box fuse socket # f16 melted causing right headlight, turn signal, city lights and right marker light to fail. seeing numerous reports of the same thing on the web. *tr

Passenger headlamps, passenger front turn signal and all rear turn signals stopped working. the right signal was not operational. took car to dealer and they indicated the fuse box and the 30 amp fuse ( f16) under the hood had overheated and melted. they are charging me $580.00 to replace the fuse box and fuse. when asked was this a defect and how can this situation be prevented, they said it has happened with other cars. it is something that happens and good thing i brought it in because other major damage to the car could have occurred. my concern is that this defect is a safety issue that could lead to serious consequences. other volkswagen vehicles have been recalled for this same issue (melted fuse box and fuses) and it is not clear why volkswagen isn't extending a recall to all cars that exhibit the same defect. *tr

The electrical wire insulation of the passenger side head light is crumbling and falling off the wires, i noticed when i had to change the light bulb for the second time in less than a month. when i opened the access cover to replace it i saw pieces of the wire insulation all over inside the head light compartment. i'm very afraid and scared that my car will catch on fire due to that manufacturer deficiency of the electrical wire insulation. i sent one message to volkswagen on america yesterday but they have not contacted me to get additional information or provide guidance. i took pictures with my iphone and will provide them upon request, my personal email is [xxx]please advice what can i do to have vw repair that deficiency at no cost to me. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Lost passenger headlamp, passenger front turn signal and all rear turn signals. the fast signal only indicated that the right signal was not operational. we had a near rear collision while making a left turn into traffic. upon investigation it was found that the 30 amp fuse (number f16) in the under hood fuse box was overheated and melted as well as the fuse socket was melted. *tr

Dashboard lights would not work when headlights were turned on, including right/left indicator lights. i brought the car into marten's vw service on 11/20/13 in bethesda md. they reported the fuse box had started to melt and had to be replaced for $580. it is no longer under warranty. this seems to be a flaw that online research has shown. the vw technician said "it is a problem with these cars". he said the new fuse boxes are made differently now. shouldn't this have been a recall item? *tr

Vehicle's airbag warning light illuminates and steering wheel horn no longer operable. fuses located in cabin and engine compartment both okay. *tr

When pulling into work, my airbag light came on along with a message that said "airbag fault!" i have since had this diagnosed as a failed clock spring (located in the steering column), which vw will not replace because the car is over mileage and too old for any kind of goodwill replacement of the part. since this is a critical safety system, i am disappointed that it failed on an effectively new car, when none of the 15-20 year old beaters i've driven have ever had a clock spring failure. *tr

While traveling on rt 287 @ 10:30 pm all of sudden the lights on passenger side went out from front to back of vehicle (headlights, markers, blinkers, and brake light. and then the the other side went out also i found myself in the dark which is a safety concern when you have tractor trailers traveling around you at excessive speeds. which i almost got hit. the next day everything was working again then it went off again. i can only drive this vehicle before sunset. ( there should be recall on this before someone gets killed as it almost happen to me.) if you research this you will notice that others are having same issue. *tt

Intermittent electrical problems from undetermined source for last year, ended up losing all lights on passenger side of car, and some lights/light function on driver's side, including brake lights, turn signals, headlights etc. random security alarm going off without being able to turn it off, brake warning lights, traction control issues. after a quick internet search i became aware that this is a very common problem and known vw issue, and found f16 fuse to be melted along with a portion of the fuse box. called the only vw dealer in the city 10/23/14 and was told i had two safety recalls on my car, one for an ecm software update and one for this electrical issue, neither of which i was notified of, yet have been notified to have the "diesel only" sticker installed, and haven't moved since long before i purchased the car. dealer is not able to look at my vehicle until 10/27/14 and cannot provide a loaner car since volkswagen won't reimburse them for that cost. called volkswagen customer service and spoke with doug, only to be told they could not authorize rental car reimbursement, and i would need to either shoulder that expense myself or continue driving the car in it's current state. informed him that the car was not safe to be driven with the lighting issues, and fuse f16 being tied into abs as well, was told he couldn't help me. if they had done the correct thing, i wouldn't be left in an unsafe car to transport my family, due to their engineering design negligence. *tr

I started my vehicle when i got a light bulb failure light on my dash, after investigating all affected bulbs which were all on the right side of the vehicle i looked at the fuses. come to find out there are two spots in the fuse box that are 30 amps and were melted but not blown. the fuse box itself has been melted as well. i replaced the fuses and about one year later it happened again. i jiggled the fuses that were melted and the lights started to work again. *tr

The fuse box melted causing failure to many of the vehicles functions. had i been moving or in a crash - i would have been unable to unlock doors, open windows etc. they fuse box issues started with shorting out the headlights (another safety issue). vw refuses to acknowledge the severity of this issue. i know this has happened with many other owners as well. i am very disappointed and concerned for my safety as well as others. *tr

Exterior right headlamp and right turn signal stopped working, discovered that fuse had melted in fuse box, fuse changed, worked for approximately 2 months then fuse blew again. have changed fuses 4 times, but keeps going out. *tr

The rear doors on my 2009 volkswagen jetta tdi don't lock - with the lock inside the door or the key fob. this is a major safety concern as i drive through the city everyday and anyone could just get in my car or rob me. i researched it online to try and solve the issue myself, but it seems like a difficult/expensive fix, and there are numerous posts online about other jetta tdi's locks malfunctioning. volkswagen has not issued a recall, but this seems to be a very common problem with their vehicles. *tr

Rear driver side door will not lock. the door can not be locked with the remote or manually. this is a very serious safety issue. have also noticed that the alarm will not beep when armed with the remote. *jb

Seat belt warning light and chime come on and off randomly even when the seat belt is engaged. this occurs when the vehicle is both in motion and at a standstill. *tr

Since purchasing this vehicle, i have been having issues with the interior cabin light and the door locks on the driver side. i took it to the dealer to have it looked at and they told me this was a "known" problem with the door locks and if the door lock was not fixed, my doors would continue to lock and unlock on their own. it will cost $495 to fix. if this is a know issue, why doesn't vw fix it! there is an obvious safety factor if the doors can lock and unlock on their own! *tr

Door locks began to malfunction. locks will not lock or release with key fob or door locking mechanism. this problems was identified by the service tech at the dealership as normal and a regular replacement for model years 2006-2010. *tr

I had just left my vw dealership it have an unrelated issues looked at, i had a service that wed. i pulled out of the dealership drove about a mile and my car flashed so kind of warning. i turned around to go back to the dealership and it died. i was less than a mile away from getting on the interstate where i would have been traveling at 70 mph. *tr

We were driving on a two lane highway. the cruise control was set. out of nowhere the car just quit. the gauges went to zero. the car didn't have power. we coasted until we found a clearing where we could pull off the road. we were able to apply the brakes to come to a complete stop. we were very lucky we were able to coast far enough to find a spot to pull off. there was not an emergency lane on the road. the closest town was 18 miles away. we put the car in park and tried to start it without any luck. after awhile it did turn back on and we were able to drive to the dealership. *tr

Melting fuse box...lights on one side of car stop working. all of them. very obvious fire danger. fuse box has been replaced once and now needs to be replaced again after only 6 weeks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure occurred three different times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

Car door locks not working / erratic. when i bought the car from the dealer in santa cruz, california in 2012, they did not tell me the rear right passenger door did not automatically lock, nor could it be locked from inside. i had to manually lock it from the side, and now it stays locked all the time unless i pull the inside lever. then, an year later, the other (left) passenger side started never locking too, and most of the time i have to manually lock the driver door with the key. the front right passenger door still works fine, as do all the alarms. the dealer says it will cost me $1400 to fix.

I turned my car on, and the airbag warning light came on. the owner's manual states to take it immediately to a dealer. i did so, as quickly as possible, for computer diagnostics. i was told the pods system had failed on my passenger side. my passenger airbag does not turn on when i have a passenger in the car. vw told me they would not pay for the part because i was out of warranty, due to mileage. however, i was also told that wear and tear on a vehicle does not impact the functioning of the airbags. now, vw has a nationwide backorder of the part to repair my vehicle, with no indication of when i will be able to repair my vehicle. as of now, my vehicle is unsafe for passengers. according to the driver's manual, airbag failures may also reduce the effectiveness of the restraint system in the event of a crash. for the price of this vehicle, i would not expect the airbags to fail, ever, let alone in barely three years. *tr

My car caught fire today.car was parked while i was at the doctors, girl came into the office asked if anyone had a white car and that it was on fire. we called 911. the fire department put out the fire. yesterday i received a recall notice and i called the dealership today to set up a date to get it fixed. i asked if it was safe to drive. i guess it wasn't. the fire dept. thinks it might be electrical but the recall was for fuel injectors. the dealership sent out a flatbed to tow the car back to there garage. not sure how it will turn out. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact was driving 25 mph during rainy weather when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to pull to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to a dealer. the dealer ran a diagnostic test and but did not show any defect codes. the contact took the vehicle to another dealer where the dealer found the defect and advised that a faulty sensor caused the vehicle to stall. the dealer replaced the sensor but did not explain to the contact how the sensor caused the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000. updated 11/25/11 *bf updated 11/30/11

I picked the car up from the dealer on friday sept. 30 for repairs from the earlier incident and drove the car approximately 95 miles. on sat. oct 1 i drove 5 miles and as i turned into my drive way the car shut off in the same manner as before, the doors unlocked and the dash board lights went black. only this time it did not restart after waiting. i had the car towed to the dealer again, and this time it was a faulty climate control switch in the electrical unit. i contacted vw america again about the issues with the car. see compliant #10428913. i expressed my issues the safety of the car and that the car was suddenly shutting off. vw america covered the cost of the second repairs but not the first. *tr

I was traveling along the outer loop of 495 beltway in the right center lane at approximately 7:15am when the car suddenly shut off. the doors locks clicked unlock and the dash lights went black. the car drifted to the shoulder of the road. after about 5 minutes the car started and i drove 1/2 mile and shut off again in the same manner. the car was towed to volkswagen of waldorf where they cited a electronic control unit in the steering column was faulty. *tr

First incident in july 2011 but same ongoing issue and at the dealership at least 8 times in 11 months. currently at the dealership again for almost 3 weeks now. its always the same "symptoms" but always told its another problem..... as follows: -sputters and jerks -exhaust or gas fumes overcome the car -engine revs but the car wont move, then jolts forward. -stalls when trying to start, it jerks violently making a putting noise as if it can't get fuel then dies. -there's a beeping noise coming from something in the engine when it stalls that no one seems to know what it is. i have replaced: -intake manifold -all fuel sensors -low pressure fuel pump -high pressure fuel pump -melted fuses with unknown cause -two batteries -other smaller items related to fuel system. *jb

I noticed first that the alarm will not chirp when activated however the lights will flicker. as a result it was the rear driver side door will not lock. after the rain season the problem went away. it did happen every year till it stops working all together. i found out by other owners that it is a common problem and that i was lucky that the lock was jammed unlock, if it was jammed locked it was unable to repair without damaging the door. i feel if so many owners are having the same problem in a fairly new car it seems a manufacturing defect and not wear and tear. *tr

I have a vw 2009 jetta 2.0t wolfsburg series, and it has been happening stallings from nothing. a lot of times when i start the car, it stalls by itself from nothing and sometimes would not start again. yesteday my wife was driving on the highway, and sudderly the car started to loose power unitl she was running at 20 milles per hour, when from nothing again. the car started running normally again. after she got home i took the car for a ride, and, one more time nothing happened. she drives the car for the most of time, but i had stalled with me, but i was able to restart the car right way. howerver, losing power on the highway is a new event, and i think is "very dangerous". i had been at the vw dealership that i bought the car, wich is reeves imports at tampa, florida. when we took the car there for the scheduled maintenance, they were not able to find out what happened with the car. in fact, the car works perfectly, but it concerns me a lot that we have a car that can stall from nothing. i am aware that nthsa have received a lot of complains about these events, and i am pretty sure that vw knows about the problem, but it does make me worry, when nobody does nothing about that situation. what do they want happen? a event that can cause an accident with fatal victims?. i think the government has to take care that situation for the safety of the people that had purchased that vehicle. *tr

My jetta gli stalled on me while i was on the highway in 5th gear. the epc warning light came on prior to the car stalling. i was unable to start the car after. *tr

2009 vw jetta. consumer states problem with engine line *tgw the consumer stated the engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. *jb

Hoses for the sunroof drains not sealed properly. water leaks into passenger compartment. fills spare tire well, rusting the jack and tools making it hard to use if needed. water also runs down a pillar (where there is an airbag) and then over (soaking) the fuse box on the side of the dashboard. then it runs down the plastic trims and leaks onto the feet of the driver soaking the floor mat. the wet fuse box and airbag seems dangerous. date first noted and mileage are guesses. i know of many other jetta sportwagens that have this issue. *tr

Car had been operating normally all service performed and no notification from dealership. on 10/26/2010 was driving at posted speed limit on alhambra blvd in pleasant hill/martinez ca. was coming down slight hill and touched accelerator to climb slight grad when the engine just stalled and shut down. there was no warning. car could not be restarted. there was a small noise from the engine compartment and a shutter as the mechanical power steering failed when the engine stalled. the car was put on a flat bed by martinez pd and taken to a local shop where nothing was done except call the dealership. the dealership, dorito bro in walnut creek ca, required the car be flat bedded to them. the car was taken to the dealer ship on 10/27/2010 the dealership then informed me that the battery was shot and they could not even trouble shoot the problem with out a replacement battery. there had been no battery failure prior to this incident. the battery was replaced and the dealership could not tell what was wrong with the car. on 10/28/2010 they believed it was the fuel pump. the pump was replaced on 11/1/2010 and the car could still not be started. the dealership as of 11/2/2010 has opened up another tech ticket to try to resolve the problem. 11/3/2010 was informed by dealership that the fuel pump needed new bolts because the old bolts can not be reused due to the sensitive nature of the tdi motor. i asked if the fuel pump failed and contaminated the engine dealership said no. *tr

Shortly after purchase, car began to fill with water. not directly from the sun roof but from a disconnected or damaged drain hose. causing serious mold & electrical problems. vw has reluctantly looked into the problem, replaced parts, but only made it worse. and the car is now undrivable. *tr

From the first week i owned this brand new jetta tdi sportswagon (with a manual transmission) it would periodically "faulter" or momentarily lose power at about 38 mph. i drive quite a bit and the problem would occur randomly, perhaps every other day. i've yet to be able to duplicate the problem by recreating the driving conditions, but it always happens at the same speed, right after upshifting. i notified the dealership about the problem right away and they checked it out when i brought it in for it's first service appointment. as expected, the technician was unable to recreate the problem after a short test drive. this vehicle now has over 45,000 miles and the faultering continues to occur every few days.

2009 and possibly 2010 volkswagen jetta windshield wiper system stopped working when the brake was applied and only restarted when the brake pedal was released. updated 02-26-2010. *bf updated ivoq 06/01/10 vehicle taken to dealer 4 times for corrective action and system is not repaired. dealer told me that vw engineering stated that this is proper operation of the system and no repairs are needed. dealers employees are aware of the safety hazard associated with lack of proper operation and state that they acknowledged the problem and that it is not in proper working order. *tr
