Retrofitting CarPlay & Android Auto in VW Jetta - Replacing Car Radio & Headunit Upgrade

Depending on the vehicle's age, it is often worthwhile to install a new VW Jetta car radio (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) - suitable devices for your series can be found after the general notes & tips.

Is it worth retrofitting Apple CarPlay & Android Auto in the VW Jetta?

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are modern interfaces to smartphones that allow the integration of a variety of smartphone functions directly into your vehicle's infotainment system. They offer significant advantages for drivers:

  • Increased safety factor: By integrating smartphone functions into the vehicle's infotainment system, the driver can use their device more safely, without taking attention from the road or hands off the steering wheel.
  • Improved navigation: Both systems provide access to navigation apps and map data from Google or Apple, which are often more current and accurate than the integrated navigation solutions of most vehicles.
  • Voice support: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support the voice assistant Google Assistant or Siri, so drivers can make calls, write text messages, select music, and do much more while driving.
  • Media playback: Both systems provide access to various music and audiobook apps like Audible, Spotify, Google Play Music, Apple Music, and more.
  • Compatibility: Since Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are compatible with various smartphones, drivers can choose their preferred system and are not limited to a specific phone model or operating system.
  • Software Updates: Since both systems are regularly updated, users benefit from new features, improvements, and security updates, without having to buy additional hardware or upgrade the vehicle infotainment system.
  • User-friendliness: The user interfaces of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed for user-friendliness and offer a familiar layout that is similar to the one on the respective smartphones. This makes handling easier for drivers who are already familiar with their smartphone.

How do I retrofit CarPlay or Android Auto in the VW Jetta?

There are always several options for retrofitting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which we would like to explain below - depending on your budget or vehicle model and equipment, you can then choose the most convenient option for you.

  • A retrofit via the manufacturer: If you drive a newer vehicle, numerous manufacturers offer retrofitting of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto - depending on the equipment, this sometimes only involves activation or a software update, but often the infotainment system needs to be upgraded. The costs are in a range between a few hundred (software update) and several thousand dollars (conversion measures with new hardware).
  • Retrofitting on your own (installation of new hardware): This method is usually much cheaper than a retrofit by the manufacturer. A new radio or display is ordered from a selection of devices (see below), which can be installed in your VW Jetta. Many of our readers carry out this installation themselves - even if you make use of the service of an independent workshop, you are still financially below the first option (retrofitting via the manufacturer).

Our recommendation: For newer vehicles, first check whether so-called activation is possible for a low to mid three-digit amount from the manufacturer. If this is not the case, we always recommend the second option.

You often also have a wide range of choices when it comes to devices and can adapt the retrofitting to your individual budget.

Frequently Asked Questions about Android Auto / Apple CarPlay Retrofit

This depends on the type of transmission supported by your vehicle or retrofitted radio. Modern systems already support the wireless function, while with older versions, it is necessary to use a suitable cable.

Do I have access to vehicle data and other functions?

If CarPlay is retrofitted or activated by the manufacturer, you often still have access to other vehicle data (consumption, driving time, etc.). This is usually not the case with retrofitted radio models.

Which smartphones are compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?

Apple CarPlay is usually compatible with iPhone 5 and newer models, as long as they run on the latest iOS. For Android Auto, your smartphone should have at least Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or a newer version.
