Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. the contact stated that while parked, the contact discovered that the brake line was leaking. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the rear framing member had rotted and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the failure mileage was 101,000 and the current mileage was 101,300.

Rear brake line had severe corrosion where it attached to the proportional valve. corrosion caused brake fluid to leak and brake failure. *tr

Any speed above 40mph produces a violent shake/wobble from the front end. going down a slope and /or applying the brakes makes the problem worse. this is the second time in 2 years that i have had to replace the rotors, calipers and pads at a considerable cost to myself. both times the symptoms were the same and the cause was the same. the plungers on the right front caliper sticks and causes the pad to maintain contact with the rotor and overheating it causing the rotor to warp. the warp in the rotor produces the shaking which is extremely unsafe. i don't tow or haul heavy loads, i don't drive excessively fast nor do i use excessive braking, still the problem recurs. *tr

Took my 2002 tundra to a local toyota dealer for a second time to inspect frame after being told by an independent licensed mechanic that my frame was perforated/rotted, the rear end housing was leaking, the spare tire hanger was broken,(tire missing), all heat shields were either broken,loose or missing and front brakes were in need of being replaced again. front brake rotors, pads and calipers were replaced 11/09/07. all of this had occurred since 05/06/2010 when the truck was last on his lift. harr toyota performed a frame inspection and verified all of the above failures. they also did the frame crossmember inspection in 01/10 and the truck passed. they specified that the frame failure was @lt rail/trans mt. they also said the rt ft sway bar link was broken, and noticed an exhaust leak. they declared that in spite of the frame failure it was safe to drive just don't do any offroading! so i guess that hitting a pothole would not be advised.! they told me that the brakes were unsafe, and not covered under any recall. i am very upset at the condition/value of my truck. i am also very upset that nhtsa is letting toyota get away with the "warranty enhancement" of replacing the frame only of these trucks. toyota and its dealers denied the rust problem for years. my problem started when the vehicle was still under warranty, and i was blamed for the failure. in the years that toyota has denied a problem with the tundra, the frame rust has infected, most if not all, of the truck. both bumpers are rotting off. the gas tank had to be patched (05/2010) because it was leaking fuel from a rust spot under one of the support straps. toyota will replace other compromised parts at the owners full expense. in my opinion they are using the frame replacement to generate part sales and repair business to help defer costs. nhtsa- please force a more comprehensive recall! !

I have experienced excessive front suspension shaking when the brakes are applied to my 2002 toyota tundra. i have just a little over 100k miles but the shaking is getting worse. i have had my brakes pads changed in accordance with standards, i have rotated my tires as well. *tr

Approx every 3000 miles the rotors warp and have to be replace. it is a dangerous situation if traveling or pulling trailers. i do not do either and very careful with truck. still happens. dealer didn't do the tsb before i bought it with 16,000 miles on it. i don't put many miles on it so it was out of warranty when first had the problem. didn't realize it was a recurring problem until the second time i had to have it fixed. lots of forums on the same problem. no coop from toyota or dealers. *tr

Do your job nhtsa. the 2000-05 tundras have a brake problem. how many complaints do you need to recall an obvious safety problem that toyota has ignored? they are on the ropes now for some of the other problems that they have been ignoring for years. you can act tough and strike now, while they are unable to strike back. *tr

The brakes have a serious brake vibration when applied. it originally only happened when going down long grades but now it happens all of the time. the brakes and rotors have been replaced but that only fixes the issue for about 5k miles. *tr

Front drivers side sway bar link is corroded through. no accident or injury but only because i knew what was going on after i saw the broken link and drove accordingly. after further investigation we find that the brake calipers are corroded beyond salvage and the frame has heavy rust in a number of areas. it is clear that this truck will be worthless in a few years due to the heavy corrosion and we will all be lucky if someone is not killed due to corrosion damage causing something to fall off and cause a wreck. *tr

2002 toyotas tundra sr5 extended cab: on sunday 8/15/09 brakes failed and i evacuated vehicle because of smoke coming out of engine compartment. vehicle towed to repair shop, mechanic discovered that rack and pinion had rusted through and brake fluid caused the smoke as it burned on the engine block. the break lines did not fail it was a hole in the assembly through which the brake fluid escaped. very serious incident that could have resulted in an accident has it occurred while driving at speed, incident occurred while i was leaving my driveway. i called toyota on 8/21/09 to report failure and find out if there was recall, number called, 800-331-4331 ext 5, ref number for call 0908132654. toyota informed me that there was no recall. i am reporting this incident now, 11/25/09, in light of the recent recall for rusting frame member. my loss a brakes resulted from the corrosion of a component that my mechanic was surprised to see fail. this was a first during his 15 years working as a mechanic. *tr

I have had nothing but problems with my 02 tundra. .the truck shakes violently while braking i have had brakes and rotors replaced 3 times within 4 months i learned about this service bulletin through another website while learning that hundreds if not thousands of people are having the same problem. *tr

2002 toyota tundra front brake severe front end shimmy when braking,caused me to run off road into guard rail. toyota refused to admit to front brake problem when in warranty and now out. well documented problems with these calipers not enough deaths obviously to warrant recall. *tr

My 2002 toyota tundra limited extended cab 4x4, v-8, has a pulsating brake pedal since i took delivery of it on 2/1/02. every year when the truck was taken to the dealership for the pa.state safety inspection & emission inspection, i complained of this problem and on several of my dealer invoices this complaint is noted. at one point i took a tsb,(technical service bulletin) into the service manager and showed him that toyota had a problem with the front brake pads,calipers, and rotors on the tundra trucks,(2000 thru 2005).the original front brake pads,calipers and rotors were too small for this size truck causing the brakes to heat up and warp the rotors. toyota was trying to correct the problem by offering an updated front brake kit, which consisted of larger pads and calipers. i was told by the service manager that my truck already had this updated brake kit installed. this was absolute lie on his part because after reviewing the tsb and looking at the pictures of the old style pads and calipers verses the updated pads and calipers, it was obvious that my tundra had the old style and tsb was dated 9/12/02 and my truck was taken delivery of on 2/01/02. on 7/7/08, i took my tundra to the dealer for inspection and was told by the service manager that my truck needed brake pads and new rotors because of the pulsation caused by rotors. he told me that toyota had a problem with these brakes because they were to small for this size truck. my total bill for the pad,rotor,and inspections came to $498.84. when i told the dealership about the brake tsb on my truck they said it did not qualify for the tsb and there was nothing they could do.. have documented proof that indeed my truck did qualify for the tsb. i called toyota customer assistance and all i got from them was a lot negative attitude and they told me it was a dealer problem. basically, they told me to"go scratch". this brake problem is going to lead to heated brakes that will not stop the truck. *tr

Brakes wear out prematurely and vibrate when applying the brakes. no accident, just defective materials or bad engineering that should be corrected. brakes are too small to adequately stop the vehicle. toyota needs to recall and put larger brakes in to adequately stop the vehicle before accidents happen. *tr

My 2002 toyota tundra had the front brakes replaced 7,000 miles ago. when braking the truck shudders and shakes. i was told that the rotor is warped. the toyota dealer says this is a problem due to me driving hard on the brakes. this is false. i am very easy on the truck. now simultaneously the check engine light went on. the toyota dealer says the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. the cost of the part alone is $1,000.00 all this after i dealt with a problem with this truck in 2005. back then, at 58,000 miles, the engine threw a rod and the entire engine had to be replaced. is this truck a lemon or what? i am not hard on my vehicles. i own a 1994 honda accord that has 250,000 miles. i expected the same from toyota. i am very disappointed in the toyota tundra. why i am having to pay for new brakes 7,000 miles after replacing the front brakes? why is the catalytic converter failing? someone needs to hold toyota accountable for these problems. instead toyota wants to blame the consumer and say the consumer is at fault due the way the consumer is driving. *tr

Last year i purchased a 2002 toyota tundra. nothing but trouble with the front brakes and rotors. burt toyota, the dealership where it was purchased, acts like nothing is wrong and will do nothing about it. now, i have learned that this is a problem with most, if not all, tundras. they make larger rotors and brakes for the front at the cost of $2000 with labor. why should toyota not be responsible for such an critical part of the vehicle? do we need a few deaths before people look further into this tundra nightmare? to date, 16 months, i have spent money on shocks, drums, rotors, brake pads, alignments, tires, balancing of tires, and my time sitting on my butt waiting for the work to get done, only to find nothing has changed. now i see the tundra forms of complaints of the same problems that go on forever. why is toyota not held liable for this? please help us! *tr

I have had a problem with the brakes on my 2002 toyota tundra pulsating upon brake application since about 12k miles i have had the rotors turned, installed slotted rotors but nothing seems to work. i am at the end of my rope. these brakes shake so violently that they are starting to scare me to even use the truck. *tr

Vehicle purchased 5/2002. brakes pulsating & vibration while braking have resurfaced numerous times, had front rotors replaced and then resurfaced again after the replacement, yet the pulsating and vibrations continue to recur approx 3-6 miles after any repair work. problem seems to be rear drum and front discs not working cohesively. front discs have all the breaking burden. no failures yet or injuries because we are so worried that we brake far ahead of time to ensure we stop on time with all the vibration and shimmying going on. *jb

When applying brakes at speeds above 50 mph a shaking occurs in the front brakes, stopping distance is increased and controllability is harder to maintain. took vehicle to toyota dealer in town, and he said the brake system needed overhauling, and that there were two technical service bulletins br004-02 and br003-2 detailing the problem and fix. due to the fact that the truck was out of warranty, it would cost. *ak

2002 and 2003 toyota tundra brakes warp every 10,000 miles. i have owned a 2002 toyota tundra since it was new. at 35,000 miles, i began to experience a brake problem with violent shaking of the front end. my normal mechanic told me that it was warped front break rotors and they would have to be ground down flat. i did this and then experienced the same problem at approximately 45,000, 55,000 and 65,000 miles. i am now nearing 75,000 miles and the vibration is starting. i only drive about 10,000 miles a year and have had heavy loads on the truck about 5 times in the last 8 years. my mechanic showed me a set of instructions that mechanics had for upgrading toyota tundra breaks because of a design problem with undersized front disc brakes and drum brakes in the back after my last brake job. i contacted my toyota dealer and was told that brakes are generally covered and are considered routine maintenance. however, they were aware that the brakes on the 2002 -2003 tundras had a design problem and did not hold up properly. they continued that the brakes had been upgraded with a labor only charge for anyone who contacted them within the first 3 years or 36,000 miles. they also stated that this brake upgrade kit was no longer available as a kit and i would have to purchase the parts separately if i wanted to fix the problem. the cost of the parts is over $2000 without labor. the toyota 800 number told me i had no options because brakes are routine maintenance, period. currently, my only plan is to continue to have my rotors turned every 10,000 miles until i need new ones. hopefully other tundra owners will do the same or their safety will be greatly compromised. my front end suspension is also showing wear. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the brake system has a design flaw. he can depress the brake pedal as hard as possible but the rear brakes do not engage. this failure causes the front brakes to overwork and damage several rotors. the contact changed the brake pads four times in almost four years. the brakes fail more at higher speeds (55 mph) and it is more difficult to stop the vehicle when the road is wet. the current mileage is 88,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.

I was driving about 30 mile per hour when my brake started to vibrate violently. after carefully inspected, i found that three studs were broken, two from the front left and one from the front right. a friend of mine, an auto mechanic, said that the studs might have been broken due to uneven wear of the rotors and loosen of the nuts. well, i have been complaining about my rotors warping too fast to the dealer, but i was told that brake system is not covered by the warranty. i brought this problem up several time, but the same thing answer was given to me. recently, i went back to the dealer and told the service manager about the incident. there i found out that all the complaints i made to the service department were not documented. i was told that they only documented if work orders were written. that means i have to pay them to document. the manager said he may considered replacing my brake system if the problem was documented before. toyota has heard and read hundreds of complaints about this brake problem. this problem is a safety issue and it should not be ignored. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the front disc rotors are defective. the rotors overheat and warp. the vehicle has been repaired twice. the first time the rotors were replaced. the second time the rotors were turned. when the brakes are applied the whole front end vibrates. the dealer informed the contact there was a service bulletin out to correct the problem which consists of replacing the current rotors with bigger ones, but the repair only applied to vehicles under warranty, therefore no repairs were made.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. the vehicle was purchased in july of 2008. approximately six months later, the contact noticed that the brakes would pulsate when pressure was applied to the brake pedal. the vehicle was driven to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under recall. the mechanic also stated that the ball joints and rotors needed to be replaced. in addition, the ball joints were repaired due to a safety recall, but not the rotors. after the repairs were made, the vehicle was driven to a local repair shop where the rotors and brake pads were repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not under recall for the rotors; therefore, they were not liable for the repairs. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the current mileage was 108,000 and failure mileage was 86,000.

Front brake rotors continually warp on 2002 toyota tundra. have had rotors surfaced two times and replaced pads three times. brought this up to dealer during warranty period and was informed that this was not a warranty issue. *tr

My brakes have had squealing and since the vehicle was purchased. i was told it was dirty rotors and it couldn't be fixed. at about 12,000 miles it began to vibrate when braking. i was told the brakes were showing some wear, but it was normal. at the 15k mile check i again reported the vibration. again i was told it was normal wear. now at 23,000 miles i learned of a tsb issued for the vibration problem on my vehicle. when i took the vehicle to the dealer i was told i need a brake job, but the tsb only covers vehicles under 36,000m and 3 ears. my vehicle is over 3 years so i am told the tsb does not apply. *jb

About two months after purchase. the vehicle would shake when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer; a service technician said the rear drums were probably out-of-round. drums were resurfaced and brakes were good - for about two more months. problem recurred - taken back to dealer. shoes replaced. brakes good for 2 more months. problem recurred - dealer wouldn't do anything since out of warranty. taken to an independent shop where drums and rotors were machined. brakes were good for about two more months. truck again shakes when brakes are applied. the problem is ongoing. *jb

I have a 2002 toyota tundra, access cab. starting at approx. 30,000 miles, the brakes began to vibrate when applied. condition has progressively worsened, and now the truck front end shimmies considerably when applying the brakes. this creates a dangerous condition, particularly when driving down hill or in traffic. *nm

Consumer complaint regarding 2002 toyota tundra. the vehicle makes noise when turning left. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that five of the lug nuts were loose due to stress. 5 of the lugs were left loose. one stud broke and one lug nut was holding the wheel in place. *ts the consumer noticed that the tire were worn and asked the service manager to have them checked. it was determined that they were indeed worm and the tires were replaced. after the tires were replaced the consumer notice a problem with the front end that was not there prior to the tire replacement. the dealer replaced all 6 lug nuts, 1 stud and cap which was installed incorrectly. the brakes were replaced at 20000 miles and 90000 miles. about 6000 miles after the last brake service the consumer notice a pulsation when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they replaced the rotors. *nm

From day one when i purchased my toyota tundra on 9/30/02 i have had a problem with the brakes. i brought the truck back 2 days later to tell the salesman that i felt that the brakes "shuttered" when the vehicle was driven in city traffic conditions and braking distance was increased the more that i drove the vehicle. they checked the truck that day and i was told that it was fine. now, almost 3 years later with only 27,000 miles the brakes are worn and the rotors have to be replaced. the dealer says that the brakes are not covered but they might replace the rotors. i see that there is a history with the rotors warping and causing the pads to fail prematurely. i don't understand how toyota can sit back with a blind eye when clearly there is a problem with the braking system. *nm

Purchased 2002 toyota tundra nov 2001. jan 2004 vehicle would shake badly when brakes applied at 40+ mph. was told needed brakes replaced/rotors turned. needed rotors turned again dec 2004 and again june 2005. now aug 2005 same problem. with fast stops on freeway this shaking causes control problems which is a safety issue.*jb

I own a 2002 toyata tundra. i, like many, as i am now finding out, am plaged by the same braking problems that so many are experiencing. before the 36,000 mi warranty went out i took the rruck to my dealer and they said that there was a service bulletin on the brakes. they replaced rotors, and calipers. after a while the same vibrating came back again. i took it back again and they turned the rotors and said that fixed the problem. since the warranty has run out , i have replaced the rotors twice and new pads every time. i love my truck but there is no dobt that they have a problem. i just need a solution, along with so many other tundra owners!!

This compliant is applicable to toyota tundra trucks ~2000 to 2003 models. a very strong brake vibration felt through-out the vehicle coming down mountain passes (i live in colorado). even with the appropriate down-shifting the brake vibration is frightening causing the driver to wonder if the vehicle will be able to be slowed after a while. this is a known defect to toyota motor corp and is addressed in the toyota service bulletin br004-02 and is only addressed upon complaint by the customer and then again only at no charge if the vehicle is within the warranty limitations. the fix is a design change in the form of repalcement of the front caliper assembly and the front rotors. the rear drums might also have to be replaced with drums of greater mass and rigidity, according to the tsb br004-02

Dt:contact complained about brake problems. when the brake were applied they were spongy and it required extended time/distance for the car to stop. the brakes have been replaced several times every 3-4,000 miles. the front and rear brakes were changed in 3/2005. *ak *nm

We bought a used 2002 toyota tundra on 6-16-2005 that had 45,134 miles on it. it now has 109,000 miles on it . when we first bought the truck from the dealership, the brakes were replaced before we took it home because we noticed a vibration. since then, we have replaced the brakes, pads, etc. twice. we now have to have the vehicle service again because while driving the truck shakes violently at around 40 mph and braking literally shakes the entire truck. it seems highly unreasonable to have to replace the braking system 4 times in three years of ownership. i believe that there is a serious defect in the braking system in the 2002 toyota tundra that could lead to accidents causing injury or death. when will toyota recall these vehicles due to manufacturing defects in their braking system? i am starting the incident date as of the date of purchase since that is when we first had the brakes replaced. i now have to pay more money to have the entire truck braking system corrected again so that we do not end up in harms way. toyota needs to step up and review all the complaints that have been filed about this complain. something is wrong with the braking system in this vehicle. *tr

1.excessive break vibration during stoping. thought to at first related to tire balance. 2.front brake rotors warped from heat buildup and improper ventilation. 3.contacted local toyota service department. advised of (toyota tsb #br004-02 brake upgrade) authorizing replacement of: dust shields, front rotors, calipers,pads,rear drums,and pads. toyota refuses to repair with mileage being 41,000 as truck is not in warrenty. toyota would like to repair for $1803.25. toyota would not comment on why i was not advised of this problem before warrenty expired. as of now, have contacted toyota southeast and issue not resolved. tundra will now have to be repaired out- o-f pocket, as break failure is imminent, and safety is compromised. independent mechanic suggest replacing rotors with performace cooling disc and ceramic pads to minimize warping.

I own a 2002 tundra that has the brake vibration (warped rotors) problem now at 50,000 miles. the truck had 20,000 miles when the problem first surfaced and then took it to the dealer and got fixed, but the problem off course started again around 40,000 miles and when i contacted the dealer they told me that toyota will only cover the problem till 36,000 miles. this is a universal problem for this model. *jb

While driving 70 mph, the transmission stalled. the vehicle was towed. dealership repaired the problem. *ak the driver heard and felt a loud bump in the rear of the vehicle. the engine continued to run but the vehicle would not move when the consumer applied the gas pedal. there was rear end grease leaking from the right side rear showing on the wheel and tire. the mechanic stated that there was no connection between the rear brake, rear end leaking grease, the drive shaft and the failure of the transmission. the brakes were a major problem, the cruise control never kept speed or smooth, the left lower front ball joint had a catastrophic failure that caused the entire wheel, brake line and all essential components on the left side of the vehicle to come loose. the consumer requested reimbursement. *sc the brakes were a problem on the vehicle, and the drums were replaced. *jb
