Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2000 Toyota Tundra

I own a 2000 toyota tundra pickup and have had a vibration in the braking system. i have had 4 repairs on the brakes at 6,139, 49,535, 58,302 and 61,277 miles. toyota has produced several service bulletins on how to repair the brakes (br001-01, br006-00, br004-02) were all done on this truck. toyota refuses to inform consumers or offer a recall on this common problem. i am out $1255 in repairs and toyotas last response to me was : "toyota's final stand is to not offer further assistance on this matter." *nm

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and have had problems with the brakes pulsating when applying the brakes under normal driving conditions. i'm the second owner of the truck and have had the rotors replaced and brakes completely overhauled twice in approximately 30,000 miles. after noticing many complaints of other tundra owners on the internet and finding out that toyota has released a tsb to correct the problem (but will only fix at their cost if the truck is under 36,000 mile warranty), i decided to send in this complaint. my truck like many other people will experience severe shaking when applying the brakes. after they fix the brakes for about $450 a shot the problem is temporarily corrected until a few thousand miles and the pulsating returns. the dealership realizes it's a problem, but to apply the correct fix, it's another $2000. for $450 you can fix the problem again, temporarily. they say the problem is not a safety issue, but it's common sense that if your brakes are not gripping properly, it will be a safety concern. why does someone have to be killed or injured to get someone to take action for toyota to stand behind this problem? several people on the internet have mentioned that they have had accidents due to this same brake problem. the fact that toyota has issued a tsb points to the fact that they know that the original brake system is a problem. what can consumers do to get toyota to stand behind this problem?

My 2000 toyota tundra sr5 was purchased in aug 2000. in june 2005, the dealer noticed excessive rust on the frame and other parts of the underbody. my car is only used a few times per month on the weekend and only has 16,000 miles. the brakes needed to be replaced in 2006, the dealer noted excessive rust again on the calipers. *tr the consumer was informed the rust condition was due to improper metal preparation during factory build. updated 11/16/09

2000 toyota tundra experiencing problems with brake rotors.*mr when braking the front end of the vehicle vibrated. the dealer esurfaced the rotrs but the vibration returned. *nm

Terrible vibration as i was braking from front of vehicle, toyota tundra 2000). brought truck to dealer during warranty, they turned the rotors and charged me. at 34,000 miles prior to warranty expiring they suggested same - turned rotors, and they indicated this was a normal problem. you just have to turn the rotors. now, they admit there was a problem, and a service bulletin was issued. but since the truck is out of warranty they could not help, and will not work out a concession with toyota.*ak

I have a 2000 toyota tundra. when applying brakes, particularly when exiting the freeway, the truck shakes violently as if there were an earth quake. it's like nothing else and could not be from operator error. i've recently replaced the pads and the rotors and bled the system but to no avail. the truck still shakes dangerously when slowing, however gently, from speeds in excess of approximately 40 mph. *nm

I purchased my 2000 toyota tundra limited 4wd in sept. of 2000 with 5,500 miles on it. at approx. 10,000 mi. i experienced severe vibration of the front end when braking. the dealer turned the front rotors and replaced the pads. the same problem occurred again at 15,000 mi. this time the dealer repaired the front and rear brakes according to a tsb that had been issued. i thought my problems were over but in jan.'05 i nearly had an accident on the freeway that had it occurred would surely have resulted in loss of life or lives. i was traveling at 70 mph, allowing proper stopping distance when another vehicle cut in front of me and then slammed on their brakes. in turn i was forced to brake with full force. upon doing so, the anti-lock brakes took over and it took all the strength i had just to maintain control because of the violent shaking of the entire truck. after this near accident my truck has the vibration problem during braking again. i now have 43,000 mi. on my truck and being out of warranty the dealer says it will cost me $1700+ to correct the problem. what a poor engineering design toyota has in the tundra when a $30,000 truck has repeated brake problem while in warranty and now, after the warranty has expired, applying the brakes hard 1 time results in my having to spend nearly 1/15th of the total cost of the vehicle to repair a problem toyota has known exist in the tundra. i feel very strongly that toyota should be forced through a recall to remedy this design flaw. *jb

I own a 2000 toyota tundra sr5 model. i am experiencing extreme shuddering in the whole vehicle when applying brakes. this problem was relevant six months and i took it to precision toyota and they eleviated the problem. now it is doing it. *ak again. my rotors are warped (with new balanced tires). i have been researching the internet and have foud that this shaking is prevalent in 200-2002 toyota tundras. i understand that toyota can solve the problem but expects the consumer to pay for a defect that toyota knows about, installing larger calipers.

2000 toyota tundra limited: i purchased my vehicle when it only had 34,000 miles on it. i now have 98,000 miles on my truck and i have always had brake problems, shaking, pulsating. i have replaced my rotors before and shortly after the same problem was back in no time. i am wondering if there is a recall on the brakes for this particular model. if not there should be. i have been on numerous discussion boards and people still with factory warranties and all or barely over have had there brakes overhauled at no charge. *tr

Bought truck in may at 59,000 miles. service on brakes and rotors done at 55,000. truck now has 68,000 miles on it. severe vibration when braking. took to dealership rotors severly warped. $534.41 to repair. 9,000 miles is not many miles for rotors to warp!*ak

I have major vibration when applying my brakes on the 2000 toyota tundra. i have had 2 brake jobs done, resurfacing rotors, new pads. the problem reapeared after about 2 weeks. went back to brake shop and they said there is nothing they can do other than to continue to resurface or replace rotors, calipers, and pads. they also infromed me that they are aware of toyota service bulletins but, unless you are within the manufacturers warranty, the dealer will not fix the problem. if toyota acknowledges a defect in parts/design, how come they are not being held accountable for these repairs on vehicles that were manufactured prior to the bulletin releases? please, help us tundra owners who have been left out in the cold!*ak

The brake on my 2000 toyota tundra shake violently when applied. the rear drums were replaced along with new shoes and the front rotors were turned with new pads at 26,894 miles under warranty and at 60,000 i have had to have both reworked again. your organization should demand a recall for this problem.*ak

Brake rotors warp and cause severe vibrations. seems they were not designed for a truck this heavy.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the brake lines were repaired at the owners expense about 5 years ago. recently he noticed the brake light warning light illuminated on the instrumental control panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the frame along with the brake lines were replaced because of corrosion. the failure mileage was 50000. the current mileage was 74000. updated 11/04/09. *lj the sway bar link was replaced. updated 11/06/09.*jb

Front brake rotors are severely warped after just moderate use. this causes the vehicle to vibrate violently when stopping. when slowing from high speeds, this leads to loss of control of vehicle. new calipers, brake pads, rotors, and probably bearigs will be required to repair.*ak

While driving at any speed vehicle vibrated when applying the brakes. dealer was notified, and floor manager admitted there was a problem with this vehicle, also, indicated there was a technical service bulletin on this problem. *ak

I own a toyota tundra, 2000, v8, extended cab. one recurring problem is the poor performance of the front brake system. i have 72k miles on the truck and have replaced the brakes, and had the rotors turned 3 times, average every 20k miles. dealer claims this is not a warranty issue and dealer claims no evidence of a design problem. i have viewed hundreds of similar complaints. second issue, recent event. after a 4 hour drive the truck shut down. restarted truck in park and has a rough idle. as soon as the truck is in gear, truck shuts off. required towing. after sitting for 24hours, truck operates fine. several mechanics claim torque converter problem. toyota deal will not fix anything since truck has returned to normal operation. in addition, intermittent slippage of transmission during acceleration between 30 and 40mph. again, dealer claims nothing can be done since dealer cannot confirm problems. this again indicates a transmission problem. dealer is team toyota in langhorne, pa

Brake rotors have needed replacing several times since new because they warp. poor design flaw. o2 sensor replaced under warranty at close to 58k miles, then 2 more o2 sensors went out @ 103k miles. very expensive to replace... cost me $435. *ak i have complained to 2 different dealers that my front left wheel may have a bad wheel bearing, but they say they can't find anything wrong. all i know is it constantly squeaks and it has nothing to do with the brakes because the noise does not change when you apply the brakes or drive along down the road at slow or highway speeds.

Shaking while braking that doesn't go away after continuous brake work

The dealer replaced the disc and pads and 22,000 miles. at 32,000 miles the rotors, disc and pads were replaced by the dealership again. the consumer will send a letter providing additional information on this matter. *jb the problem recurred at 70000, the dealer admitted that the brakes were not designed properly. *nm

I am the original owner of a 2000 toyota tundra sr5 access cab 4x4 with 34,700 miles on it. at approximately 30,000 miles, i began noticing moderate pulsation/vibration when applying brakes, especially from speeds over 50 mph. at 34,000 miles, i took the vehicle to a midas shop in phoenix, az, who told me i had 60%+ wear left on my brakes before they needed replacing, but suggested that machining the brake rotors would eliminate said vibration. this was done, but two weeks later the vibration returned. as this seemed very unusual to me, i began investigating and found that there seem to be thousands of complaints from other tundra owners describing the exact same problem i am experiencing. also discovered was the fact that toyota has issued numerous technical service bulletins on this problem which indirectly indicate that it produced the vehicle with brakes that were not strong enough to hold up to the heat generated on this vehicle. some customers are having their brake components replaced with better ones at no charge. comparatively, toyota service departments in my area have been very uncooperative. at best, they are replacing some parts, but require that i pay the labor. i believe this is a fundamental design flaw as opposed to a minor inconvenience, as brakes that do not hold up under normal wear pose a major safety concern. also, consumers should not have to pay to have manufacturers' hazardous design defects fixed, regardless of warranty period. *jb

The front end of the vehicle shimmied when the brakes were applied. no grinding noise was heard. the manufacturer has a tsb for this problem but they refuse to fix the consumer's vehicle because it is out of warranty. *mr *nm

2000 toyota tundra brakes shake violently. dealer admits there is a manufacturing problem, but will do nothing to fix it. fix for me to take care of it is around 2000.00 after looking online, i have found several hundred identical issues.

I own a 2000 tundra with severe brake problems. i bought my tundra used with 38,000 miles from the dealer. since i've had it i put 67,000 miles on it, and 2 set of rotars, and have to resureface them ever 5,000 to 10,000 miles. i believe toyota should be responsible for the cost of the upgrade which is $1,700.00, also reimbursement of all cost associated with brake problems. there are so many other complaints about this problem i don't know why there is no recall. it is pathetic to think that someone will have to die before the goverment or toyota recalls all tundra's with bad brakes. *ak

While driving consumer applied the brakes and a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the driver's side wheel. consumer drove vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that calipers and abs brakes were not in compliance with this vehicle. mechanic replaced the calipers and abs brakes. *ak

Shaking when brakes are applied and dealer refuses to correct the problem under warraznty, even though the first identical problem was supposedly fixed while the vehicle was under warranty.*ak

Brake problems on 2000 tundra ; this vehicle was purchased new, by myself, in april, 2000. on 5-31-01, at 21,506 miles, i took the vehicle to the dealership for warranty work on the brakes. i had complained of vibrations while braking. the dealership told me they had many such complaints regarding this vehicle. they installed a kit which transferred some of the braking load from the front wheels to the rear, thus reducing the tendency of the rotors to overheat and warp, it was explained to me. they also replaced the pads and shoes, and turned the rotors. the brakes were satisfactory until i had a normal brake-job on 7-14-03, at 62,040 miles, which i had performed at a goodyear shop in lake havasu city, az. the rotors were turned, (for the second time, counting the warentee work) and new pads were installed. by mid-november, at around 65,500 miles, i noticed a pulsating, "grinding" sound eminating from the front end at low speed, which would go away when the brakes were applied. by the end of december, at 67,000 miles, a major vibration has developed in the front end of the vehicle when the brakes are applied. it is so pronounced that i am hesitent to operate the vehicle out of town. from perusing the internet, it is apparent that many tundra drivers are having the same problem; it would seem that a design flaw exists in the braking system of this otherwise fine automobile. i ask that this agency look into the matter and mandate corrective action on the part of toyota, if deemed proper. thank you. alan k. whitney officer, arizona highway patrol (ret.) *ak

Vibration occurs when front brakes are engaged. *ak

Problems with the brake indicator lamp on the dash turning on when apply brakes. the indicator light becomes active when the weather reaches a temperature of 32 degree or lower. i reported this problem to a toyota dealer when the vehicle was under warranty. toyota found no problem at the time of service. *nlm

There has been a consistent problem with the front brakes in my 2000 toyota tundra. they go out approximately every 20,000-25,000 miles and they also get mushy for no discernible reason. there has been a technical service bulletin issued on this problem stating that there is a design problem dictating the replacement of the entire front brake assembly including the calipers back plate etc. the total for this work is over $1100.00. my mechanic stated that if it were an american car this would have been recalled and the work done at the auto companies expense... i purchased this truck new and the expense of replacing the brakes so often is a financial burden to me and i definitely cannot afford $1100.00 to have the brakes replaced. they should have been done right in the first place. is there anything that can be done about this? thank you, [xxx]. *la information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Toyota tundra brakes pulsate and the whole truck vibrates when stopping. dealer is unable to fix the problem.*ak

I too have the same braking problems as every one else. i now have 65,000 miles and have had rotors turned once and just installed new front rotors. also replaced front and rear brakes. now toyota say the will do the tsb for a $200.00 deductible. i want it done for nothing. i won't stop until they do it right. *la

My 2000 toyota tundra has a recurring brake issues that have been ignored by the dealership in nc, as well as corporate toyota. i have had the front rotors machined in the past while the intermittent rear brake lock up has been chalked up as "unable to reproduce" by the dealer. so, to this day it has gone unrepaired. at this time, toyota tells me that all of my braking components need to be replaced; however, they will only pay for 50% of the costs ($2500.00), since my warranty has now expired even though i have only 34,000 miles on my truck. the tundra's brakes have been well documented as having severe problems, but a recall has not been issued. i feel this truck is unsafe and i will not subject my family members to such a vehicle. *la

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and i am experiencing extreme braking vibration. the vehicle was sold as "factory certified." the pads have been replaced and the rotors turned. toyota and the dealership have been contacted on several occasions, both have stated that since my vehicle is beyond the mileage limits for the service bulletins that i had no recourse. my vehicle does fall within the range (vin number) for the toyota service bulletin. how can your organization, in good faith, continue to ignore a problem that is directly related to the safe operation of the vehicle? this is not a manufacturing issue, it is a safety issue! *la

Pulsating brakes, that the manufacturer will not correct. *la

We own a 2000 tundra. we recently took it to the shop because the truck would shake when applying the brakes. the mechanic turned the rotors and replaced the pads. after about a week the shaking was back. we took it back to the same shop and the mechanic said this is a common problem he experiences with tundras. we are very weary about driving this vehicle as we use it primarily to drive our children from place to place. e've read similar complaints about the brakes on the tundras. it's unfortunate that someone has to die before a decision is made to fix this problem.*ak

I have a horrible vibration problem when braking. this is caused by toyota releasing brake calipers that are too small. i have had my brake pads replaced several times, my rotors replaced, and there the problem will go away for about a week or two. then the problem comes right back. technicians have suggested that i replace the calipers for larger calipers. this issue is caused by toyota's design flaw, not my use of the truck. toyota should recal the brake calipers for 2000 tundras. they obviously know there is a problem as they have released several tsbs regarding this and they fixed the problem on the 2001 model. it's rediculous that you have to wait for someone to get injured before toyota will act on this. other complaint numbers logged regarding this are...566414 722135* 725801* 733474 739412 741099 742504 747783 747799 747802 747812 747815 747856 747859 747957 748143 748274 749042 749623 750085 751434 751551 751920 752164 752286 752739 752954 753085 753123 753140 753149 753155 753161 758565 761583 761833 763426 764214 764502 764958 767217 767230 767230 767332 767551 767755 767802 768683 785848 876163 877876 878199 879056 889900 890452 891102 894413 895595 898132 8001404 8001405 8004531 8012641 8015166 8015336 8015783 8019793 8020132 8023285 8023731 9003696 9005100 10008294 10008537 10008997 10014041 10016493 10017735 10018348 10018539 10018678 10020562.*ak please help push this if you can.

Repeated problems with brake vibration on 2000 toyota tundra. repairs completed per tsb's by toyota dealership in 2001 under warranty. brake vibration problem returned less than 15,000 miles later. this is a very serious problem that affects the performance of the brakes. this should be a recall effort by toyota before someone is injured due to brake failure. *la

I have a severe vibration in the vehicle when braking from 30 mph or higher. i had the brakes replaced and rotors resurfaced. the vibration reappears within a matter of days. an ase mechanic did all the work and used original toyota parts. the last time i took the vehicle for repair, i was advised that my calipers were the culprit and that it would cost nearly $1,000 to replace them. i took the vehicle to my dealer for warranty service on this item since the truck had under 60,000 miles. the dealer stated that the warranty had expired and that i would need to pay for complete system replacement. i have never owned a vehicle where the brake system needed replacement with 50,000 miles. my research has revealed many other people with the same problem. i believe this to be a major safety concern that needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed due to brake failure. *jb

Letter to toyota: we just had our daughter's 2000 tundra in for brake service at the dealer. the brakes have a vibration and are in need of replacement. the dealer has said that toyota would replace the brakes if: 1) we live in a mountainous region (we do) and 2) the truck has less than 36,000 miles (55,700). dealer wanted $2000+ for updated front calipers and wheel bearings. ouch! our dealer also said that toyota has acknowleged that the brakes on these vehicles were under-designed for mountain driving. my daughter has experienced a severe shaking problem when applying the brakes. to make matters worse, my daughter is an avid snowboarder and regularly travels over mountain passes in winter to ski areas. we are scared to death to have her drive this truck anymore. clearly this is not a warranty issue but is a design problem and should be repaired by toyota regardless of mileage. handling your mistake in this manner is not acceptable to those of us who purchased your vehicle in good faith in fact, we have purchase 3 toyotas in the past four years and i can assure you, this is our last. weak customer support! response: for further clarification, a tsb is a how-to guide for toyota dealerships that explains repair procedures, required tools, etc.; no funding is attached to tsbs; that is, the issuance of a tsb does not mean that toyota funds the cost of the performance of the repair or procedure described in the tsb. we regret that that you remain dissatisfied with toyota's position. please accept our apologies for this situation and for any inconvenience you may have been caused; your comments will remain on file at our national headquarters. as you have been made aware, the responsibility for repair costs remains with the owner of the vehicle once the warranty has expired. as toyota has provided its final position in this matter, there is no further action to be taken by toyota. how's that for a canned reply??? *ph

There is a problem with the brakes on my 2000 toyota tundra sr5 access cab 4x4. i have had a vibration when attempting to stop for several months before having the rotors resurfaced. now, less than 5,000 miles later my truck is almost uncontrollable when stopping from highway speeds (50 mph+). according to several posts on the internet, this is not an isolated problem. i would like to add my complaint to any that have been submitted before this problem takes a life.*ak

I have a 2000 toyota tundra with only 29,900 miles. i have experienced severe vibration upon braking. braking distance has increased tremendously. i have become aware that this premature wear on the braking system is common with this vehicle and believe that a recall should be implemented in order to replace the brake system at no charge to the consumer.*ak
