We have classified the 21 complaints from 2006 Toyota Tacoma about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
My 2006 toyota tacoma frame is terribly rusted even though i have had it cleaned and undercoated for beginners. but my main issue is the fact that my leaf springs already need replaced. they have been making creaking noises for several months because they are junk already. but then, the left side leaf spring completely cracked and that's not even effected by the rust. it's very frustrating to pay so much just to try to keep the vehicle body in working order. *tr
I have owned my truck for about 2 1/2 years. the frame of the vehicle has significant rust and rot. there are several holes through the frame due to rot and corrosion which are not normal for a vehicle less than 10 years old. on the drivers side next to the catalytic converter there is a hole. on the drivers side in the rear of the body mount there is a hole as well as on the bottom of the frame where the c channel butts together right below the body mount. the passenger side also has a hole by one of the exhaust hangers about 2"x3". there is significant rust and flaking along the entire frame. the tow hitch has signifiacnt rust and holes as well. about 6 weeks ago in mid june after filing a complaint with toyota and having the service manager at the local dealership, in riverhead ny, look at my frame and submit some pictures to toyota corporate only to be told too bad we aren't replacing frames in ny. i had a gas tank support strap fail while driving home from work, luckily i didn't lose the gas tank and end up in a ball of flames. i also reported this to the dealership and was told i was liable to replace the gas tank straps. there is a limited service campaign to address the issues with these frames but when i log on to the toyota owners website i can not find any mention of such campaign. however there is thread on a tacoma enthusiast site, tacomaworld.com where people are posting and tracking their respective progress with toyota and the issues with their frames. the manager of the service department at my local dealership stated that they are aware of the frame problems however right now toyota is not replacing frames. i spoke to someone at toyota corporate about my particular frame and she stated that they are aware of the issues and my frame meets the criteria to be replaced, however they are going to replace it. so basically toyota told me i'm sol. *js
The vehicle was at the dealership it was purchased from for several safety recalls to be implemented/fixed. i had the service manager of the dealership inspect the frame while up on the lift. the frame of the vehicle was found to be badly rusted with actual holes present in the frame. he told me that this was not a safe vehicle to drive at this point. he said to put nothing in the bed of the truck. *tr
I took my 2006 tacoma to have a 5k service. the service rep told me that i had extensive rust under the carriage and that it need to be fixed asap. he said that it would involve removing the rust and then applying rustproofing. i went online and found numerous complaints about rust issues from other owners and toyota has not issued a recall to correct the problem at no cost to the owner. this has to be dealt wtith asap. i feel that i am driving a truck that is unsafe. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that frame was rusted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
The frame on my 2006 toyota tacoma is rusting through and i'm not happy about it. i believe there was a recall for 2004 and earlier tacoma models. the manufacturer should be held responsible for more recent models with the same defect. how do i get toyota to do the right thing? when i called my dealer they told me there that there was no recall or directive to fix it, therefore they wouldn't! *js
My truck has severe rust in the front frame that appears to be rusting the body from the inside out! i purchased this vehicle new (toyota tacoma 2006) because i believed that toyota was a reputable company who stand by their claims of built to last. i also purchased a full maintenance program to be sure i was taking care of the vehicle properly and faithfully met every service. the dealer never pointed out a rust problem on these services but did on other instances like broken antenna, cloudy fluids etc. when a piece of metal fell off the front underside of the body of the truck, i was horrified to notice severe rust and took it to a local mechanic to get his opinion. when he first looked at truck as i drove in, he said your truck looks great, no rust on upper painted surfaces. when he looked underneath he remarked he had never seen rust so bad on such a new truck! i researched online and found many instances of a voluntary recall on tacoma frames model year 1998-2004) to either be replaced at toyotas cost or buy back, because inferior metal had been used. seems that 2006 models are having the same problem and i have an appt. with my local dealer on 6/5/2014. i am praying they will help me with this issue as i sunk all my savings in this truck. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that while having an oil change, the technician notified him that the frame was completely corroded. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered to spray paint the frame. the failure and current mileage was 75,000.
I discovered that the frame on my toyota truck is excessively rusted. it is actually quite unbelievable when you compare the frame to everything else on the underside of the truck. every other component on the underside is in pristine condition but there is hardly an area of the frame that is not rusted. there are some areas that have the classic "potato chip" scaling that has eaten through about 1/2 the original thickness of the metal. the rust appears on both flat surfaces and welds. a quick internet search revealed there seems to be hundreds of others with similar complaints---many are even newer, low mileage sunbelt trucks. i guess it's obvious toyota never addressed the root cause of their frame issues that prompted the previous recall on the 95-04 models. i surmise that root cause is using cheap, inferior, recycled metal to save money. btw, my previous truck was a 1990 toyota that i drove until the body fell off in 2009. after 19 years (that's 19 pennsylvania winters), that frame was spotless with most of the original paint still remaining. in every other respect, i love this truck. however, this frame rust issue is a continuing toyota safety problem --- not to mention the financial aspect as my truck will be dead long before it's time. thank you for your time any aid you can lend to this matter. *tr
My 2006 toyota tacoma has 42,200 miles on it and the frame rotting by the day, due to rust. my truck cannot be driven. the bed creaks and shakes and is very unstable. the brackets holding the leaf springs are nearly disintegrated, deeming my vehicle stranded. toyota will not do anything about it. when i purchased my vehicle from toyota in 2007, i paid for undercoating to protect from rust. upon research, many 2006 tacoma owners that are dealing the same rusting scenario. recently toyota issued a recall on tacoma frames from trucks 1995 - 2004, clearly something is wrong but didn't get resolved with newer models.i have photos of the brackets & frame, which are atrocious. local mechanics and body shops alike have said they haven't seen anything like this on such a new(ish) truck. lem, the toyota representative told me the rust is due to a chemical compound effecting the frame and it's out of their hands. "warranty reviewed photos and determined that it''s surface rust and not perforation corrosion. rust on surface is eating it''s way throughout all metal parts of the vehicle." does chemical compound mean rain water? rain water drips from the back of the bed, through the body onto the brackets. this is the epicenter of the rust problem. earlier in 2012 i had an issue with this same rust, which ate away my bumper. toyota said this wasn't unusual and they wouldn't help me. warranty would not cover it. i complained locally, and wrote a letter to corporate - no response. on 10/9/12 i paid $600.18 for a new bumper - toyota installed. they didn't not address the frame rust at that time.now, 16 months i have a truck that is stuck in my driveway - with rust stains all over the concrete. if i drive somewhere, rather than tow the truck to get fixed, an accident seems imminent. i would like my frame to be replaced or bought back by toyota immediately. thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the frame was completely corroded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician verified the failure and stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 86,000.
On 2/15/2014 i changed the tires on my truck and noticed that the frame is experiencing severe rust nearly everywhere. i took the truck to the local dealership for routine maintenance based on the mileage. at that time i explained to the service department representative at the dealership my concern regarding the amount of rust to the frame and might this become a safety problem leading to a failure. the dealership service department representative told that there is no problem with the frame and the frames will rust but will fine and there is nothing to worry about. *tr
I went to local toyota service and dealer for oil change and tire rotation.once the technician raised truck he inspected frame and found rust and cracks and 2 wholes, 1 on left side frame on inside and 1 on right side inside frame adjacent to front passenger door with a 6in crack running from whole . service manager then called me to bay as soon as tech told him and showed me the rust and crack and wholes he then advised me to call the toyota customer service office 1-800 331-4331 i called and spoke to a rep who then went on to tell me because my truck does not fit the criteria for recall. only tacoma's from 1999-2000 and 2001-2004 are involved recall which if not all or most had the same problem as mine according to blogs.she said that leaves my vehicle out because its a 2006 and to add salt to these wounds my truck is up for safety inspection in march 2014 which is 2 months away and the service manager at local toyota stated it will not pass safety.i am either forced to repair a problem out of my pocket which is an obvious manufacture issue or purchase a new or used vehicle in order to travel to work. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that while having regular maintenance done, he was notified that the frame was fractured. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician verified the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who agreed to replace the frame free of charge. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 123,800 and the current mileage was 129,000.   *tr
I noticed severe rust with holes rusting through the frame of my 2006 toyota tacoma. when i took it to toyota dealer to have it checked the employees there would just shake their heads in disbelief. they told me that they took pictures, and they would send them to corporate. they also told me that it was still safe to drive but they wouldn't give me anything in writing. i am concerned about safety, frame is an important part of a vehicle, and with rust 1/4 of an inch thick flaking off allover the frame with holes rusting through i think i have a good reason. i have never seen such rust even on trucks 10 years older then this one. i did not get any response from toyota corp., and it has been over two months since toyota mechanics looked at it. when you pay over $32, 000 for a truck, the frame should last bit longer before it turns into mud. i was not aware of their previous frame problems with earlier models at the time of purchase. however isn't it negligence when you recall a certain model years, and continue making newer models with the same problem. doesn't anyone control these people. especially when they put so many people in danger. this should give you general idea, because the more i think about it the more i get upset. thank you.
Major frame rust issue. frame is rusted to the point of perforation. back on 6/23/14 toyota advised spraying the undercarriage, which was done at a dealership repair order #0840463. went back to have the leaf springs fixed due to recall and to have the frame inspected. now the dealership says the frame rust recall expired in march of 2016 and it is out of their hands. need to know how to get toyota to fix the frame since the spraying did not rectify the problem and it continues to get worse.
My 2006 toyota tacoma has developed a significant amount of rust on the frame. i have documented the rust with pictures (can be provided). the rust is beyond normal vehicle wear, which is in fantastic condition otherwise. i contacted my local toyota dealer to schedule an appointment for them to quickly look at it and determine if the rust is a manufacturer issue, since previous tacomas up to 2004 were recalled or bought back due to frame rust. they stated the only way they would look at it would be if i paid a $115 diagnostic fee, and that since it isn't covered under a recall they wouldn't be able to do anything. they didn't offer any other options for me to consider. the toyota frame rust program was identified in 2008, after my vehicle was purchased but not including 2006 tacomas. the frame rust i have is clearly related to the same frame issues from previous years' tacomas. based on extensive online research, 2005-06 tacoma (as well as tundra) owners are complaining at volume about rust issues as well, including their frames breaking in half, significant holes developing, spare tires falling off, and other related safety hazards. i do feel that this is a major safety issue for myself, my family, and others that are driving behind me on the highway. i wash my vehicle every so often and do not drive in adverse conditions. i have my vehicle regularly maintained at the local toyota dealer, who have never said anything about my frame rust being abnormal after their inspections. i am willing to go to great lengths to protect my vehicle investment, my and my family's safety, and ensure the right thing is done. this includes public disclosure on toyota's facebook page, repeated contact with the dealership, and exploring larger profile complaints and petitions. i would like my frame rust fixed (frame repaired, frame replaced, or bought back) by toyota immediately. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated while the vehicle was at the local mechanic for inspection the subframe was found severely corroded. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 25,800. the current mileage was 28,600.
Tl* the contact owns a 1996 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the vehicle was diagnosed by and independent mechanic who discovered that the frame of the vehicle was severely rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact notified the local dealer and was informed that the manufacturer was no longer providing a remedy for the defect. the failure mileage was 220,000.
Frame is continuing to rust at an alarming rate. first reported issue in september. i have not heard anything back from toyota regarding a recall. *tr
Took my toyota tacoma in to have snow tires put on the vehicle, the tech. said the frame had rust holes in it and was unsafe to drive. rust was flaking off all over the frame, this vehicle is only 7 yrs. old they are sending a inspector to see if toyota will pay for a new frame. i have a ford 450 2002 and it's frame is in much better shape. *tr
At about 30 mph, we hit a bump, and the fuel tank strap fell off our toyota tacoma double cab. when we brought the vehicle to the toyota dealer, where we have had the vehicle serviced since purchasing it new in 06, we were told that the frame is perforated due to rust and that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. the dealer suggested we contact toyota, which we did. both the customer service representative and his supervisor told us there is nothing they can do. the supervisor also said there is no one else above her at toyota who takes phone calls. we have been loyal toyota customers, purchasing 8 new toyota vehicles in the last 30 years. we presently have 3 toyotas, and we are appalled that toyota will not remedy this serious safety issue on the tacoma. *tr
Purchased my truck from the dealership and have always taken it in for the oil change with the dealer inspection tickets since it was purchased. in the last inspection i was informed that the brakes needed to be replaced. took it to another shop where the lead mechanic informed me that my car was "unsafe" due to significant rust on the leaf springs and frame area bolts near the leaf springs. i called the dealership to ask how my car had gone through all of these inspections and i had never heard that my vehicle had "unsafe" levels of rust on the undercarriage. i was informed that they do not inspect the undercarriage ( !? ). when i asked for the best course of action, i was informed that a car with rust on the frame should be junked. i cannot believe i spent all that money for what i thought was a quality truck that is unsafe to drive. *tr
At annual inspection mechanic noted rust holes in the frame and corrosion in connections of plates to frame. this is of course a safety hazard that prevents the vehicle from passing inspection. dealer inspected and confirmed the corrosion. we purchased the truck new. we live on a dirt road with no salt use, keep the truck garaged in winter, and do not drive it regularly in winter. it is otherwise a sound and trouble-free vehicle. *tr
The frame on my 2006 toyota tacoma has a rust hole by the trans cross member. the frame is also rusted very badly. i drive 150 miles a day round trip to work and also my family in this vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact received a notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v604000 (suspension). the contact stated that the part needed to remedy the vehicle was unavailable. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. updated 3/24/15*cn the consumer stated the leaf spring on the passenger failed. when it failed, it shot out underneath the vehicle toward the brake and gas lines. the consumer stated while driving, he heard a loud noise coming from under the vehicle. he discovered the heat shield was loose, due to the rusting the problem. updated 09/2/15.*jb updated 9/15/2017*cn
Whiled i was driving i went over a bump in the road. the fan on my truck started making a loud noise. i took the vehicle to a repair shop to be checked. this i when i found out that the frame on my 2005 toyota tacoma was cracked and caving in where the motor mounts attach to the frame. this caused the motor to drop down and the fan started hitting on the shroud. also it pierced a hole in my upper oil pan when the motor dropped down and hit the rack and pinion. upon research there are many many cases of this happening to the 2005 -2006 tacoma trucks. this is clearly a safety issue that toyota refuses to fix.
The frame on my 2006 tacoma is showing moderate rust after 78,000 miles. i don't live in a cold weather state. i've probably only driven it on salted roads for a couple of weeks in maybe 2 of the winters i've owned it. the rust is worst above where the rear leaf springs are, but basically the entire frame shows sign of rusting. the tacoma is terrible compared to the ford f-250 that we've had for the same amount of time with more than 40,000 extra miles. the ford barely has any rust at all. i'm worried that within 2 years that my frame will have holes in it, and the truck will not be safe to drive. *tr
The truck was taken to a service garage for the required annual state of maine safety inspection. the results disclosed severe rusting of the frame, engine mounts, and cab mounts. because there were no perforations in the frame, the vehicle passed inspection. the mechanic advised that the truck is in imminent need of frame replacement. *tr
Frame on my 2006 tacoma is rusting/rotting out(almost a hole beside the transmission). toyota will not assist. i have pic's available. *tr
Dreaded toyota frame rust, the frame is rusting extensively and i am worried it will rust through. there have been numerous complaints but no action so far. rust, rust, rust...if it is a toyota, it will rust. *tr
Took truck into dealer for service and was informed that the frame had rusted to the point that there was now a hole in it. contacted toyota via phone and email and was told on both occasions that there was not a "program" in place to assist owners with this problem. previous replacement program covered tacomas made from 1998-2004 that exhibited the same issues, premature rusting/corrosion of the trucks' fames. my limited research has shown numerous cases where the frames of the truck corrodes to the point that it is unsafe to drive. please see forum at this link for other examples http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/toyota/tacoma/frame. obviously this is a defect with the most important part of the truck and one that toyota has been made aware of numerous times, but refuses to address. it is my believe that they should assist their customers by replacing the frames that have deteriorated prematurely. after talking with toyota and multiple dealers, i have no where else to turn for assistance. any help you can be would be greatly appreciated. *tr
Brought my tacoma in for regular maintenance. mechanic pointed out that there is severe rot/rust on the frame. there is severe flaking in several different areas. the most affected part is the front driver's side. *tr
There is excessive frame rust throughout the chassis. waiting on a recall for 2006+ models. rust is flaking off in large chips. happy with my truck otherwise, but will never buy another toyota if this does not get remedied. *tr
I brought car in for routine oil change. mechanic called me in to show me the extreme rust under the frame. it is flaking off in chunks and almost rusted through in some parts. mechanic informed me that this was not normal and i should contact toyota for possible recall information. i contacted toyota, but have not heard back for over one month. *tr
While changing the oil on my 2006 toyota tacoma, i notices significant rust on the frame of my truck. i scraped at some and chunks fell off revealing a weakened frame. my spare has not been able to hold air and upon inspection the entire metal area that holds the tire in place is rusted. the mileage is under 90k i would like to have this documented as i have been reading other complaints from 2006 tacoma owners they are experiencing the same problem as myself. this car is as a family vehicle as utilize it in camping, canoeing and other outdoor activities. thank you *tr
Vehicle frame: approximately one to two years ago began to notice excessive rust on vehicle frame. corrosion is significantly more than what would be expected for a vehicle less than eight years old. parts attached to frame also excessively corroded. concerned for overall safety and integrity of vehicle at this point. suspension and leaf springs point of contact with frame are corroded. all nuts/bolts attached to frame are also excessively rusted and corroded. vehicle has approximately 75000 miles. it was purchased as a long term vehicle. i expected a new vehicle to have a longevity of more than eight years. according to toyota the vehicle is beyond warranty and there will be no action taken on their part. a small amount of rust on a vehicle this age is expected however this corrosion is reaching the point of a catastrophic failure. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the frame was rusted and extremely thin in some areas. the contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that the frame was not under warranty. the failure and the current mileages were 103,000. *tr
In october of 2012 i purchased a 2006 toyota tacoma from interstate toyota in airmont, ny. the vehicle had 79,000 miles on it, had and had passed the toyota 160 point / certified pre-owned inspection. prior to the purchase i asked about missing rear wheel molding, non functioning outside temperature gauge and what looked like rust on the frame. the vehicle was brought into their shop and put on a lift. the molding was repaired, the guage ordered and shipped to my home, and i was assured by my salesman, justin goetz, that the rust was merely surface rust, and that the vehicle wouldn't have passed the 160 point inspection had it been more then just simple surface rust. i was happy with my truck and purchased it with their platinum warranty coverage using toyota financial. several weeks ago the a/c stopped working. i got an appointment at my local dealership, shore toyota, in pleasantville nj to have it fixed. i asked that the a/c be checked, and that the frame be checked as a mechanic that performed my last oil change had noted concern about frame rust to me. shore toyota replaced the a/c clutch (covered under warranty), and proceeded to tell me that "the vehicle should not be driven and taken off the road immediately as the vehicle is not safe to drive!!" i was informed that the frame was severely rusted out with perferations holes on the left & right side rails. i was told that there was no way this vehicle could have passed a 160 point inspection because it would take much longer then 8 to 9 months for so much rot to occur. i was floored!! i just wanted my a/c fixed. i never could have imagined that my $20,000+ truck was a junker.....that i'd been had. toyota corp said there were no recalls and nothing they could do about it at this time. i wish i could include the pics i have of the frame.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the casing for the spare tire was rusted. the contact could not use the crank to remove the spare. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the frame was severely rusted. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated the frame was extremely corroded. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000. *tr
My 2006 toyota tacoma frame has rusted apart in four places. two repair facilities deemed it unsafe to drive. i am devastated!!! please help. i have heard of many, many cases of this and toyota should be held liable. my truck only had 60,000 miles when the problem began, now it has 90,000 and is undrivable. please help! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the frame became fractured. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. the mechanic stated that the frame would have to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. *tr
During some under body inspections prior to performing some brake repair, i noticed a crack in the rear drivers side frame in front of the shock mount. i contacted the local dealership and they confirmed a perforation and crack across bottom portion of c-channel in frame. the denied any responsibility and claimed the crack was due to severe offroading, which is absolutely incorrect. i asked them to prove that theory and they could not. they would only provide a reference number and that i could contact their legal department. i am now stuck with a 6-ish year old vehicle that cannot be driven. *tr
On 5/18/13, while preparing to service this truck, i found that the front frame crossmember had severe rust damage. on further inspection, i saw that the mount for the lower control arm on the frame had completely disintegrated; there was very little metal left to hold the control arm in place. this was on the left side of the vehicle. i checked the same mount on the right side and found that it too had rust perforation, though not as bad as the other side. i also found that the frame rail itself had rusted completely through on the left side. i decided to park the truck. after talking with two local mechanics, who both agreed that this truck was definitely not safe to drive, i contacted toyota corporate in california. i was told by three different toyota representatives that this truck was not covered by any recall, and that my only option was to have it repaired at my expense. i am well aware that toyota has had severe frame rust issues, and i strongly feel that they should extend their recall to include other model years. i am currently left stranded with a mechanically sound seven year old truck which i cannot drive! *tr
The underside of my truck has so much rust that the spare wheel and tire will not hold air. i notified toyota customer service and was told they couldn't do any thing about it because the warranty had expired. i expect the tire and wheel to fall out and cause an accident at any time.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the bottom of the vehicle was completely corroded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician stated that the vehicle was not treated with the anti corrosion material. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 39,000. *tr
The frame on my 2006 double cab tacoma is severely rusted. huge metal flakes with quarter size thickness is flaking off the main frame & all cross members. there is a hole that has developed under the truck bed in the frame. i took the truck to a toyota dealer and they looked at the frame and said it was very rusty but right now there was not anything they could do to help because toyota had not issued any official "recall" or "tsb" for frame repair for 2006 models. i called the toyota customer line. the lady took all my information and concern, but informed me that at this time i was on my own to have any frame work repaired. i feel the toyota corporation should stand behind the 2005+ years tacoma frame rust issues as they have with the 2001-04 model. it is obvious that the severe frame rust issue did not end with the 2004 model tacoma. *tr
Severe frame rust caused vehicle to fail inspection. had hole repaired by certified welder, to allow it to pass inspection. he noted a number of other spots which will go bad in next 1-3 years. *tr
Frame has rusted through. truck will no longer pass pa state inspection. had welding done to repair but there are numerous other areas on frame with severe rust. would like to see this addressed by toyota before it causes a crash. *tr
