The drivers side seat belt gets twisted with retraction & gets stuck in the extended position causing a safety concern

Seat belt will not retract like it should. this happens too often. not just in my car.

I own a 2005 toyota sienna van and have been bragging on it to everyone except for one big problem that has haunted me since 2016. the problem is that it has faulty seat belts that were installed in this van and they were recalled. it took forever to convince adams of lee's summit to replace them because they didn't do it every time. my husband [xxx] fought with [xxx] of lee's summit dealership on several occasions trying to get the original recall performed because the seatbelts would not do it every time. in the mean time i was forced to carry a small screwdriver a forced to sit in parking lots in danger as i fought to try and untangle the crossover of the seatbelt. than after many trips they finally replaced the seatbelts. within a year the post height adjustment broke on the drivers side and it broke in the up tallest position wear my 6' 2' husband needs it. i am a 5'5' women with disabilities and having to constantly fight with these seatbelts to go to my doctors appointments is horrible. so now it sits across my throat, very painful and unsafe. he has taken back to the dealer two times and they refuse to honor their work or part. first time on 05/02/2017 which was less than a year after it was replaced, noted as body/interior repair order. they refused to repair it. second time we brought it up again at an oil change on 7/3/2018 they also refused. they were paid to install it under warranty it should come with some type of a warranty with this installation. seatbelts are designed to be worn across our legs and across our shoulder, not our neck. i feel something needs to be done for my safety. you attention to this problem would be greatly appreciate. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Front driver and passenger seat belts constantly folding over and getting stuck in retracting mechanism. this happens whether van is stationary or driving. pull out seat belt to buckle, it gets folded and stuck on the way back in. then it won't go in or out.

Seat belts won't be able to retract. it is getting worse and worse.

I made an appointment and showed up 15 minutes early at 11:15am for my appointment at a the toyota service center on 4th avenue in san francisco. i have two recalls issues on my 2005 sienna (shift lock solenoid and corrosion of the spare tire carrier) and this super annoying and unsafe locking of my front seat belts both on the driver and passenger side. the seat belt issue should be covered under a warranty enhancement - zf2. it took them 5 hours to fix both recall but they refuse to fix my seat belt issue. at first, they said they couldn't replicate the issue. i drove off and what do you know, the seat beat got stuck again! i drove back to the service center and show my service person. he jerked the seat belt left and right to loosen it and then said this "just happens" and there is nothing they can do about it. he said the warranty enhancement was for the retractor mechanism and not for the folding seatbelt issue. i said, this is obviously a defect in the design of the seatbelt holder/attachment and toyota should fix it. was told, "nope, sorry, can't help you." i was so mad. wasted a whole day and didn't get the most important issue to me fixed. toyota is no longer caring about its customer.

Front passenger side seat belt jammed and won't retract. it happens so often even after de-assembled it and put back together

The door check was replaced by toyota for previous owner.the door welds are broke and pops and the door check has broken plastic.toyota replaced the spark plugs, but just the front. front were denso and back were ngk. local dealer says they do not mix plugs. local dealer says they will inspect the shifter and leave it when the recall says they will replace it. on the dash , it was also fixed by the dealer because it melted. i was told by local dealer i had until 2024 to get it fixed when actually it goes out in 2017. i am being misled on purpose so they do not have to fix their problems. no one is watching them and letting them do what ever they want no matter you spend over $40,000 plus for their trash they will not stand behind. if their is a factory defect it should be an automatic recall because they cannot be trusted to do the right thing. lets wake up and help the people being taken advantage of. it happened when toyota put a new door check in it.they have the records and it was on my carfax. i bought it like it is being told the dealer would honor their letter. they refused to fix it and i am still waiting on the dash. they do not have any and time will run out before they get to mine just like the door. it swings wide open nothing to stop it. the shifter i will just live with it because if they can't be trusted to change all your plugs ,can you trust them to do any work to your toyota vehicles.do not buy toyotas because they do not care about you, just selling their cheap cars!

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated that the front driver side seat belt would not retract. the seat belt was fully extended and would not retract; therefore, it did not safely guard the occupant in the seat. the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 47,000.

Driver and passenger seat belts are not retracting properly when fasten. as a result, the seat belt has too much slack and this will not protect the occupants from an accident or bodily injury. the drivers belt also has become frayed.

The passenger side middle seat seatbelt will not retract. it is fully extended, will not retract and therefore does not safely guard the person sitting in this seat. the failure of the seat belt has effectively removed the use of one seat of a seven-passenger van. it is now a six-passenger van. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a fracture across the dashboard. in addition, the contact stated that front passenger side seat belt failed to remain buckled. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a roller needed to be replaced. the dashboard failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 89,000. updated 1/19/16 ln *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. while the vehicle was parked, the mid rear seat belts failed to retract when in use. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that only the front seat belts were covered under a warranty. the failure mileage was unknown.

The front passenger side seat belt is twisted and won't retract. it provides no protection and will not work in a crash. this is an ongoing problem with all seat belts in this car. *tr please get this recalled before someone is hurt.

The driver seat belt will not retract causing it to be completely useless.

The driver side and passenger side seatbelts keep getting folded over and stuck while trying to retract. they stop retracting and get jammed. sometimes the jam can be worked out, but once it had to go to the dealer and be taken apart. i am concerned that in an accident the seatbelt will fail since it can't properly hold when retracting or being pulled out. *tr

So, far nothing has happened, but my seat belt on driver side gets folded over and will not release and so you can't put the belt on, i did take to toyota a while back and they found nothing wrong, but it doesn't happen all the time, but from time to time it will curl over and you can't move the belt to put it on. with a lot of effort you can finally uncurl it. i have been in places where you stop go shop and come out and there you are struggling to get the belt on so you can buckle up and be on your way. thank you! The driver side, front passenger and back passenger seat belts have all folded over so that they would not retract after being used. this required repair to make the seat belts usable again. in the event of a crash the seat belts may not work. *tr

The front seat belts are jamming and getting folded, thus creating a severe driving hazard. (unable to use seat belts). *tr

Driver side seat belt jammed for the 8th time. dealer or i unjammed it but dealer stated next time i would need to pay for a replacement. toyota should be responsible for design defects!!! *tr

I purchased my van in november of 2012. my husband has a toyota tundra that we purchased new in 2004 and it has over 300,000 miles on it. when my buick stopped running, i knew that i wanted a toyota van. we have a physically challenged daughter so when we go anywhere we have to take the walker and her wheelchair with us. apx. 3 months ago the sliding door on the passenger side began to not open every time. it gradually got worse and finally stopped completely! we just used the driver side door and crawled in and out. after a while the sliding door on the driver side did the same thing. now neither door will work!!! after reading other post on different sites, i realized that i am not alone. come on toyota, get it together!!! i love my van but i really need the doors to open!!! *tr

While putting on the seat belt on the driver's side, the seat belt wound not extend out of its holder to allow the belt to click into its holster. i would have to pull it multiple times or jiggle the holder on the side wall of the van to get it to work. it does not allow the driver to be belted. it has happened multiple times since the start date. *tr

front seat belts are jamming and getting folded and thus creating a driving hazard. this is happening almost every other week. we have to untangle and again this happen. sometime we will be driving without seat belt properly fasten. *tr

When pulling the driver side seat belt in order to buckle, the belt folded slightly at the point of exit from the body panel, causing it to become stuck and unable to retract. after attempting to fix for half an hour, we were unable to return belt to proper position and had to drive home without a functioning driver seat belt. this has happened several times now, but this is the first time we were unable to get it fixed in a reasonable time. seems to be a design issue. *tr

Front lh seatbelt jammed. won't retracted after pulling. *tr

Driver's side seat belt jams in the retractor and is extremely difficult to free, often making it unusable. *tr

Door popping when opening and closing due to broken door weld. secondly when the passenger side seat belt becomes fully extended it binds and gets caught and the shoulder belt will not retract back into the door. *tr

Online search revealed ongoing problem by other owners of front seat belt jamming. this is about the 3rd or 4th time it has happened to me.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna . the contact stated that the driver side seat belt would not retract and became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they stated that the spring was causing the seat belt not to retract and mechanism needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 71,000.

A/c went out april 2012. blows hot air. according to online forums this happens a lot in sienna's - 2004 to 2006 models. we have 5 children in the vehicle and cannot take them very far even with the windows down or they could possibly get heatstroke. they are sweated wet by the time we get from point a to point b. we open all windows and the rear ones that only open 2 inches as well. forum link where i found this info (same issue as our sienna) is http://www.toyotafans.net/2004-sienna-ac-problems-t2523-st20.htm -the seat belts in our sienna lock up, found the recall on this site so will be taking it to the dealer for that. not just the middle row seat belts though. it is rear seatbelts as well as front driver and passenger seat belts. -the tail light works when it decides to. sometimes it is off so we get pulled over - until the police officer taps it, and it decides to come back on. on a side note - the left speaker system does not function either unless it wants to. same as the tail light. one minute it is off (most of the time) and the next minute the sound is blaring. *tr

the driver's seatbelt will not retract and will not work in a crash. it has doubled over and is pulled all the way out. offers no protection. serious design flaw that will lead to injury !!!! *tr

The passenger and drivers side seat belts get stuck constantly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated the front driver and passenger side seat belt webbing failed to retract. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician informed the contact that the seat belt retractor bezel assembly would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue but provided no assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 34,000. the vin was unavailable.

1. second row seat belt locked tight to passenger (unable to loosen) during steady speed as well when in standby. need to unlatch and fullly retract in order to extend it out again. 2. rack and pinion starts leaking power steering fluid and starts generating noise when making a turn. 3. passenger side slide door fails to open from inside and by remote. further research confirmed failure of lock release actuator. *tr

2005 sienna middle row passenger side seatbelt is stuck and will not retract. *tr

The driver side seat belt stuck in a position and not operational on my toyota sienna 2005 mini van. this one did not work smoothly from long time ago, and eventually, it stuck with the belt folded. not sure what to do. any suggestion. since it is a safety kind of issue. is it a common problem? Driver's side seat belt won't retract, it gets jammed and twisted. complaint to dealer about it while the vehicle was under warranty, they never found anything. i just recently took it for service and complaint again about seat belt, this time found a problem but it will cost me almost $500 to fix it because vehicle is not longer under warranty. i have read in the internet about this problem and there are quite a few thousand people going through the same situation. *tr

Middle row driver side seatbelt failure and passenger side sliding door power failure. *tr

The seat belt keeps twisting and sticking, must take all trim off to fix, time consuming and very frustrating, also safety item, occurs on a regular basis, should be a recall, or free fix at dealership. *tr

2005 sienna van (toyota) - front driver side seat belt will not retract. does not work creating a severe safety problem. *tr

Middle row seat belt fails to retract, cannot pull it all the way out to "lock" it and have it retract as i have to according to my child seat rules. *tr

2005 toyota sienna power doors are failing. today i could not get my kids out as both doors failed to open. the drivers side door opens about 4-6 inches and it make a loud noise and closes again. the passenger door has failed about a year after we bought the vehicle and the dealer replaced the electric motor. also seat belts get stuck and you are not able to retract them, dealer said it was normal for seatbelt to get stuck when it folds in incorrectly. very unsafe situations as we have our kids in the vehicle most of the time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact was attempting to secure the driver side seat belt but it would not release and was difficult for the contact to pull. the contact stated the failure was the exact same as nhtsa recall campaign id number: 05v327000 (seat belts) which he had repaired under the recall four years prior to the failure. there vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. the current and failure mileages were 101,000. updated 8/2/10 *cn the consumer stated toyota made the necessary repairs. updated 08/24/10*jb updated 08/30/10*jb

2005 toyota sienna was rear-ended on 6/10/10. passenger seat belt did not restrain the passenger. passenger's body was thrown very near the dash. resulted in damage to sternum and neck. we are requesting toyota replace the passenger belt. we are encountering resistance from toyota to repair this safety defect. driver's seat belt did restrain driver. *tr

Middle row passenger side shoulder strap does not retract; problem is recurrent. lap belt works properly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated that the driver's seat belt would not retract from the pretensioner, causing the seat belt to become tangled. the contact was unable to utilize the seat belt due to the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer was able to untangle the seat belt. the dealer advised the contact that they were unable to determine a remedy for the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000. updated 6/15/12 *cn

The shoulder portion of driver and front passenger side seat belts binds in top bezel. when this happens the belts do not properly restrain the driver and/or front seat passenger increasing the risk of personal injury in an accident. jams happen occasionally and i have been able to clear them with manual manipulation of strap webbing at the bezel. however, repair is required to assure continued safe operation. *tr

Front passenger side latching device (female unit) for seat belt stopped latching. dealership replaced at out of pocket cost to vehicle owner. in over 50 years of driving numerous cars and trucks, i have never had a seat belt that would not latch..no matter how old the vehicle. this is definitely a safety issue and should be covered with a recall. (a service tech even told me they have replaced others at their dealership....one last week.). *tr

Driver seat belt is constantly getting "stuck". it won't move or release as it should. *tr

When pulling front seat belts to hook them, they will frequently fold over and become stuck in the bezel if you don't remember to be very careful and cannot easily be moved further or retracted without considerable effort. it must be "worked" back into its storage area. one needs to get out of the vehicle and work it back into the bezel with a slotted screwdriver or some other tool. i have just driven without the seat belt when its raining hard or very cold. toyota hq says they will not help with the problem and we are on our own. haven't priced what it will cost to have the whole mechanism replaced. design or quality of bezel material is the problem but toyota says sorry, take care of it yourself if its a problem for you. *tr
