Problems with 2005 Toyota Sequoia VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

On average, the 2005 Toyota Sequoia starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 92 894 miles.

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2005 Toyota Sequoia

My vehicle will suddenly accelerate for no reason. this sudden "unintended acceleration of power" comes on with no notice. i have almost hit a person and have been in one car accident as a result. this unintended acceleration problem has occurred about 10 to 12 times. the unintended acceleration has occurred both in stationary & in motion; and both on a city street and highway. turning has not been affected by unintended acceleration. toyota has tested and provided the attached report to me but without any interpretation. my vehicle repair cost because of the unintended acceleration was $4,529.24. toyota still has not responded to this dangerous and life threatening situation. the manufacturer could not duplicate the failure. updated 10/04/2017*js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sequoia. while driving various speeds, the vehicle independently accelerated without warning. the vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer where it was diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was undetermined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. the vin and failure mileage were unknown.

I experienced a problem with engine warning and vsc trac off lights going on. the check engine light also came on. my family and i were on a trip and our sequoia all of a sudden lost power. it slowed down dramatically even though the engine was fine. it was a very dangerous situation because we were on an interstate where the speed is 70 mph. i also experienced all the brakes making a massive grinding noise while going slow into a restaurant. (the brakes have less than 3000 miles on them.) the parking brake light also comes on periodically.

I have vsc trac, vsc off, and check engine. if you give it a lot of fuel, it just sounds like it wants to go, but it doesn't translate into power in the rear end. i use my code reader and it showed codes p1441 and p1444. says i may have: a) faulty vacuum switching valve (vsv) for air injection control circuit, b)faulty air switching valve number 2, or c)faulty vsv for air injection system. this is the second time this happened to my sequoia, and this seems to be a recurring issues for toyota sequoia owners and in fact it is a recurring issues for other models as well. this cost me approximately $2200 last time and now 2 years later it is back for another $2200 to repair. it's all the over the internet about this vsc trac, vsc off, and check engine, it needs to be recalled!

I get constant warning lights for brake, vsc and trac. this is a very common problem with the sequoia. it shuts down those safety features.

Oyota sequoia 2005 engine light on ,vsc off light and trac vsc light on. these complaints are about this problems http://www.automotiveforums.com/t544406-sequoia_vsc_trac_problem.html,http://www.carcomplaints.com/toyota/sequoia/2003/electrical/vsc_trac_lights_are_on.shtml,here are tons of other complaints on this problem and it is not limited to our year model. if all of the complaints were compiled in one area and presented to the ntsb, i'm sure that toyota would be forced to deal with this issue and correct it. its a big issue estimated cost for that around $ 2000 to $ 5000 i don`t know if u investigate or no .i am not going to get this issue repair until i will hear from you .please take it seriously

When turning corners in motion, the traction control light illuminates causing a loss of braking and acceleration. there is now way to control the vehicles acceleration/deceleration until the light goes off. typically last about 3-5 seconds. this happens frequently every time the vehicle is driven.

Was driving and vehicle slowed down to about 35 40 mph and would not accelerate pass 40. was in motion on a city street

While driving at 35 mph, the check engine light, vsc off light, vsc trac light, and the emergency brake light all came on at once, and the vehicle stopped accelerating, and i experienced a dramatic decrease in vehicle power. i drove the vehicle home noticing a drastic change in acceleration as the sequoia would not accelerate normally; it would accelerate at a significantly reduced rate, topping out at 35mph on the flats, 30 mph on an incline, i was able to reach 70mph going down hill on a highway. since that day, during start up, the engine makes a high-pitch vacuum noise, which drops off and normal engine sound returns. all dashboard lights are normal, until 10-15 seconds after start, when the vsc off/vsc trac/brake lights all illuminate, and remain on until the engine is turned off and the poor acceleration and decrease power are now the norm. this is a very dangerous safety issue should this happen to someone accelerating out of an intersection, or needing more power on a highway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the brake warning light illuminated. in addition, the vsc track off and the check engine warning lights illuminated. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 103,000.

I bought a toyota sequoia 2005 back in 2005 at rice toyota dealer in greensboro . today , when i was driving on the street and turned on the left light signal with less than 15 mph while using the brake, i heard a very loud grinding noise and that instantly i saw all 3 signs ( trac off, vsc trac, brake ) on at the same time. i am almost out of breath and scared to death. the signs (trac off, vsc trac, brake ) once in a while appeared in the past and disappeared by themselve and i did not have any serious problems in the past , but today the car just acted like a dead car at that momentarily. i was so scared and scared. *tr

Within the first two weeks, after purchasing the vehicle, the "brake" light, "vsc trac" light, and "trac off" light came on and there was a terrible grinding sound when attempting to stop. it was very hard to stop but luckily i was in a parking lot when it happened the first time. the "brake" light has continued to come on multiple times per week since may of 2015 and the other two lights still come on occasionally. in fact, on my 800 foot drive back from picking up my lunch today, the "brake" light was on. each time the other 2 come on, it causes the breaks to grind and it is very hard to stop. there was just over 120,000 miles on the vehicle at purchase. i have read numerous forums online stating issues with this model, 2004, and 2003 models for the same issue but toyota has refused to do a recall and expects customers to pay for something is obviously an issue throughout these particular models. i think something needs to be done about this issue. i believe it is a safety concern toyota needs to be responsible for!!!

When slowing to a stop, my sequoia periodically grinds when braking and the vsc sensor, abs sensor and trac sensor light turn on and stay on. *tr

When accelerating from low speed or stops the sequoia activates the vsc and the traction control system and refuses to accelerate. happens consistently but not consistently enough to know when to expect it. the traction control/skid control light activates for around 5 seconds and then vehicle returns to normal operation. it can be nerveracking. from all my investigation it seems identical to the problems that led to the 2003 sequoia recall. i do believe that this is a significant safety issue. again from my research this is a very common problem among many model years of sequoias. *tr

Vsc trac, abs and brake alerts light up on dash board, noise when vehicle is initially turned on, the noise disappears after a few minutes but the alerts stay on. the vehicle also loses power (but the engine keeps running, just no power to accelerate) if i make a quick turn, loss of power lasts for a few seconds then turns back on. *tr

Trac off, vsc trac ,engine light came on...trouble code was p1444 (secondary air injection system switching value stuck)...vehicle had problems accelerating. repairman indicated that the air injection pump/check values needed to be replaced and very expensive. based on other reports it appears that this is a frequent occurrence and vehicles shutting down on interstates. others have said that toyota knows about this but won't issue an extended warranty, but offers for newer vehicles . owned several toyotas before this...this could be a deal breaker for future toyotas. *tr

The vsc trac, vsc off and abs light would come on and then reset when i turn off & restart the vehicle. i called the toyota dealer i take my car to for maintenance and they said to bring it in when the lights turn on again. i did some research and waited for the lights to come back on. the lights came on today & i took it into the dealer. they said the master cylinder and skid ecu was bad & needed to be replaced. they quoted me $1900 plus labor. this is an extremely common problem with the sequoia's and i am very surprised & disappointed that there hasn't been a recall done for this problem. *tr

Vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights... all on, all at once. this has happened several times now. it comes on for a couple of days and then resets itself no codes found. this time it came on again and limited the speed to about 35mph while my wife was driving on a major highway. she was able to get it back home safely thank goodness. i have been reading about similar cases for this model and do not know what to do.please help. we have just had it serviced about a month ago for timing belt replacement etc. this is my wife's primary vehicle and i can't afford to put any more money in this. is there a recall for this with so many cases of the same issue i have read about? *tr

While driving my vehicle on the highway to work, my brake warning light on the dash came on. i pulled over cut the truck off then back on, the light was gone. the next day driving home from work, it was pouring down rain and the brake warning light came on again, along with the trac and vsc warning lights. i was only driving about 25 mph since i was in the city and not on the highway yet. i pulled over cut the truck off and then back on, the lights were out, but within another mile they were back on. i avoided the highway since my brakes were having problems and it was pouring rain. the next day they were off so i drove back to work but when i was on the way home they all came back on, this time it was the afternoon and not raining so i took it to the toyota dealership. they ran the codes and said my codes were c1247 stroke sensor and c136 master press sensor - they said this was part of a skid control ecm that controlled my antilock braking system! very scary to think my brakes were not functioning properly. i was told it could be fixed for $1042.82 and may also need to replace the master cylinder at $715.85. when i looked up the problem online i found that this was very common failure with 2003-05 models and that toyota had already recalled the 2003 problem. my service tech said that he was not aware this was a common problem, although there is a service bulletin out for it. i was very scared to drive, but the tech said that my brakes still worked but that the anti lock braking system will not stop "on a dime" but will skid or slide. when i asked to speak to the service manager (all were on vacation) i spoke with the lead tech on shift, who told me alot of what i read online was junk and there was no recall on my 2005 sequoia but he gave me a number to toyota complaint department:1-800-331-4331. i have not driven my vehicle since taking it home that day. *tr

Abs system would engage as vsc skid control light and brake light appears. system would reset after ignition was turned off and restarted. mishap occurred several times on dry, smooth road surface at a low rate of speed with minimal pressure on brake pedal. i took car to dealer for repair. they replaced skid control ecu. car repeated symptoms on my way home. i took it back to the dealer. they replaced brake booster. car is working normally now. *tr

My vsc, trac off, check engine light and the exclamation sing all came on for the first time since i bought my sequoia, and it started jerking and when i set my foot on the break it starts to pull, as i got on the interstate my sequoia accelerated itself the rpm when up to # 5 it really scared me i have to take it this morning to toyota to have it checked, i do travel with my children alot and that is a safety concern for me. *tr

The vsc trac light is on , and engine light too. *tr

Vsc and abs lights are going on after horrible shuttering sound from front of vehicle. my wife has experienced this four times on a major highway and we are concerned about safety. i had recently experienced this last weekend. there is a sudden loss of control of the vehicle being aware of the emergency brake is the only way to stop this vehicle.toyota has many complaints about this and they need to recall this problem before someone gets rear ended on a highway. *tr

We noticed that our frame had severe rust last winter. (2/14) we always did the regular recommended maintenance. we purchased this new in '05. i'm sure others haven't reported this as they haven't looked for this problem not expecting it from such an expensive vehicle that you would expect to be very reliable. we did put in a claim to toyota last february and we were told that it wasn't a problem that they had many complaints on. i know there were recalls in the past with toyota vehicles that had the tubular frames. this also has a tubular frame. we also have the same problem with vsc and tracking that many others on this site have complained about. *tr

Trac off, vsc trac , abs and parking brake lights all came on and stayed on while driving. vehicle has been doing this intermittently for about a month now on a regular basis. has done it over the past couple years but maybe once every several months. resets after vehicle is turned off. looked up issue on internet and was surprised to find all the posts about this issue and the lack of toyota to recall whatever is causing this issue. *tr

While driving home on interstate 15 in california brake pedal would not depress. after several hard foot applications pedal finally engaged. this is after months of service on this vehicle for brake problems starting with spongy and inconsistent pedal and vcs, abs and brake lights coming on and staying on. dealership replaced on board computer, brake booster, brake master cylinder, brake pads and problem still there. i am the original owner and bought this vehicle new. this is a serious problem and just a matter of time before an accident occurs. this vehicle is now back in the shop once again. *tr

Car had very little power when pressing gas pedal. took to toyota dealership where they indicated the "air injection pump" required replacement. i performed the required repair and it was $3,000. i've also seen this is a common problem with this model vehicle. *tr

Driving vehicle and abs activates and stalls vehicle not allowing for acceleration pulsating the brakes and leaving me in the middle of the road for about 30/45 seconds. it has happen twice already same thing both times. *tr

I was told the vehicle control and stability system was off. and is a common issue with this year make and model. vsc and trac off light keeps coming on. also secondarily valve stuck closed. p1445 & p1442 codes. also another known issue for this vehicle year make and model. toyota is aware but won't fix after certain miles. *tr

While applying the brakes there is a grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle with a shudder and the vsc, trac off and brake lights come on and stay on. this has happened several times recently. also the brake light will come on at random times. everything resets when the ignition is turned off. when the vehicle shudders it does not seem to be slowing down. i have checked the toyota web site and they do not show any recalls. also i have checked on-line and there are several people that seem to be having the same problem. this is a very unsafe problem and i feel that toyota needs to fix this with a recall. they are aware of the problem and it is very expensive fix. *tr

While driving straight down the street, i heard a grinding sound and all of the vsc trac warning lights came on. after stopping and restarting the car, the car behaved normal again. this is the second occurrence. i'm presuming that the grinding noise might be the brakes pulsating. it is not safe for the brakes to automatically apply themselves during safe driving conditions. *tr

After cranking the car and driving for a few minutes, the following lights on the dashboard appeared: vsc off / vsc trac / check engine light. i entered the on ramp to the interstate and could not accelerate past 40 mph. had to pull over and let the car "reset". attempted to re-enter the interstate and the flow of traffic but car would not accelerate beyond 40 mph and i had my 3 small children in the vehicle. very terrifying experience. drove to a dealership that advised me a secondary hose had to be replaced on the engine. later determined that toyota released a technical bulletin and are aware of this issue but will not issue a recall. it is an extremely costly part to fix. parts alone are $3200. *tr

Loss of abs system, vsc & traction control on interstate at high rate of speed barely avoided collisions. unsafe. vsc/abs/e brake light all on. *tr

My vsc, trac and brake light all came on all of sudden with a large boom sound. the car stalled on me in an intersection. the lights go off once car is turned off and then after turning car back on they will come on about 5 minutes after driving. car loses power every so often now. dealer said it needs a new computer. *tr

Vsc, trac, abs and brake lights would all come on a once. they would usually reset after on the next start. it has progressed over the past year to the lights staying on most of the time and only occasionally resetting to off. i have no abs or stability control due to this malfunction. even with the lights on, there were no codes on system when i went to the dealer. they recommend replacing the skid control ecu which is very expensive. this seems to be a very common problem. *tr

My vsc trac, vsc off comes on all the time and don't go away. this appears to be a manufacture issue. *tr

The brake light constantly goes on and off. trac off, vsc trac and check engine lights all come on. a loud rattling noise coming from the front end of vehicle and vibration the engine will not accelerate randomly while driving and the trac control light goes on at the same time. *tr

When backing out of garage and applying brakes, the abs motor was heard and then the brake light came on. then the vsc trac, vsc off and abs lights came on. the brake pedal felt mushy so a visit to dealer was made. the concern was addressed with service, and they came back with : "test drove car and inspected brakes. found dtc's c1223, c1244, c1247, c1310. provided estimate for updated skid control ecu @ $905 + tax". as the customer, i declined to schedule. then during a past winter storm, backing out of driveway again, the same thing occurred. very concerned that this braking system is defected in any wet/snowy/ice weather. i have had to divert to driving my 1998 honda accord in snow instead of the sequoia. i am very concerned driving this sequoia with my kids in car and braking at anytime. i feel an updated software/logic in ecu or an updated skid control ecu is valid enough to say they have a known issue that is 'safety' related, and toyota should buck up covering this as warranty. i have contacted toyota motor sales, usa, inc. and my case is filed at their headquarter office under my name and file #[xxx]. they stated their is no customer compliance issued recall/bulletin or warranty available to cover my concern due to its age and mileage. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Slowing down to turn the vsc trac< trac off < check engine<brake lights come on. this has happened three times and i temporarily lose control of braking and excelleration. this is dangerous and nearly caused me to enter traffic in an intersection. *tr

While driving, the brake warning light, vsc off light, and vsc trac light all came on. pulled over and shut engine off. restarted the car and lights were initially off but came right back on as soon as i started driving. had advance auto parts hook computer to it, and it isn't throwing a code at all. *tr

The brake light constantly goes on and off. trac off, vsc trac and check engine lights all come on. a loud rattling noise coming from the front end of vehicle and vibration when starting up the vehicle. engine will not accelerate randomly while driving and the trac control light goes on at the same time. i first experienced this while going up a mountain and needed to turn around because my vehicle started to decelerate even with the gas completely floored. i noticed that there are a lot of complaints for the same issue. is toyota waiting for a death to happen before they do something. this is a family vehicle and i'm transporting my 2 and 5 year old. something needs to be done about this before something tragic happens!! *tr

3 incidents in the last 90days, each one while the vehicle was in motion between 15-40mph with 5 passengers and in traffic. on each occasion, the brakes suddenly engaged, causing a loud bang/thunk sound followed by a severe shake in the vehicle. speed & control was drastically reduced to the point of being uncontrollable. within seconds, the vsc trac, vsc off, brake and maintenance lamps illuminated. vehicle was very difficult to drive, as if the brakes were fully engaged. after pulling over, we shutdown the vehicle and let it sit a short period of time, on restarting, all lamps were on, the vehicle was drive-able however, the brakes we still being applied but slightly allowing the vehicle to move but on release of the accelerator, the vehicle slowed rapidly. after dropping off vehicle to a local non-dealer service center on each of the first 2 incidents, the codes were no-longer active and the shop indicated that nothing could be done unless the codes were active again. research indicates the 2003-04 had skid control computer recall, reflashing/reprogramming the computer but only a tsb was issued on the 2005 model year. after the third incident, the most severe, we went to a toyota dealer. they confirmed the recall & the tsb. in discussions with the service advisor's and technicians, they both reported that they have had numerous 2005 models with the same issue. the dealer informed us that the skid control computer will need to be replaced at a total cost of $1100. however, numerous posts on online blogs & forums indicate the problem persists even after the skid control computer was replaced. we are lucky that this event did not result is an accident as we were in traffic and vehicles behind us would not expect our vehicle to suddenly brake causing them crash into us at full speed. this is a severe known safety issue and toyota should issue a recall. *tr

Vsc trac, vsc off and abs lights all come on at once. i took the vehicle to my mechanic and he couldn't pull the code as it was off by the time i got there. brakes had good pad left. the light came on 3 times today and went off just as unexpectedly. *tr

The vsc, trak light and abs lights came on which in turn made the check engine light come on. they stay on continually. at first no code could be found. then dealer stated that the ecu had to be replaced as well as air pump - both totalling over $3000. this is not the only sequoia to have this happen. other years have been recalled so why not the 2005 - or any other year since it seems to be an issue. i emailed and talked to toyota. they have not heard of this problem and can not help with it's solution. last toyota i'll have. *tr

Vsc off light keeps appearing on and off. antilock braking is disable when the light comes on. *tr

My 2005 toyota sequoia had the vsc light come on. we took it to the dealer who said that it was a code for the secondary air injection valve sticking open, but he also told us that they have replaced the valves before and it ended up being the pump. when pulling into traffic the vehicle went into "limp"mode which was very close to causing an accident with my wife and three children in the car. after reading about so many other people with the same problem, it would seem that toyota should be willing to fix this issue before someone is injured or killed in an accident. i now have a car that is not safe to drive. *tr

2005 toyota sequoia sr5. my vsc trac light, abs, brake, lights come on periodically for no reason. i have read many others have the same problem. *tr

Vsc (vehicle skid control), trac (traction control), brake lights came on. this is a 2005 model year toyota sequoia with approximately 41,000 miles on the odometer. vehicle has never been in an accident and has been garaged since new. dealer says computer needs replaced, approximately $1,000 to replace. vsc/trac/brake light problems are well documented in 1st generation sequoias (2001-2007 model years). read about problems on www.tundrasolutions.com. *tr

At around 51,000 miles the abs and vsc light came on. lights went out 2 days later. it would come on intermittently about every other month for about 2 days then go out. took it to my mechanic and he found no codes stored. now it has 100,00 miles and the light stays on. took it to a toyota dealer and was told the skid control ecu needs replaced. was told it was a common problem for my year sequoia. i was told then that when the lights are on, the functions do not work. i feel this has been a safety issue that toyota has been aware of but has done nothing to correct. *tr

2005 2wd toyota sequoia limited has the following warning lights on while the engine is running: vsc, trac-off, abs, engine light. the vehicle will stall if you try to accelerate, and it will not go over 50 mph, as if having no power. my sequoia is a real safety problem on the road. until toyota stand behind their products, they are just a pathetic car company with bogus quality image. *tr
