We have classified the 38 complaints from 2003 Toyota Sequoia about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Received toyota factory recall for corrosion-resistant compound due to excessive frame rust. called local dealer and also factory toyota for appointment. took the vehicle in to the dealership. one day later received phone call that my vehicle was safe and that they had sprayed this coating on the vehicle. i picked up vehicle and this corrosive chemical is dripping of the vehicle and is not drying. concerned for environment and also, i have no idea of how vehicle was inspected assuring that the frame is safe.
Vsc trac vsc off abs warning lights are on, took it to the dealer and had the brake booster replaced the warning lights returned, searching the net many other toyota owners have seen this problem, this should be a recall since braking is a safety issue. *tr
During my work commute this morning the "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights came on at the same time and stayed on. *tr
Vsc traction control & antilock brake light on. vehicle skid on wet surface while making turns at normal speed. *tr
Abs, vcs trac light, brake light on/off. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. the abs and traction control lights illuminated and stayed on. the contact called the manufacturer who advised him to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. the current and failure mileages were approximately 64,000. updated 03/14/12*lj
I have a 2003 toyota sequoia. recently, the abs, vsc and vsc trak lights have come on the dash and stay on. these systems are safety-related in that they control the braking and vehicle control when in an emergency situation. in the event of slippery conditions, the failure of this system would make a bad situation worse, by not allowing the driver to maintain control of the vehicle. *tr
i purchased this vehicle in 2007 with 43,000 miles. since then i have driven 30,000 miles in 4 years. when i first pick this car it looked great. the day i picked it up it had a dent in the back, and the dvd player didnt work and was replaced. there was a water leak that toyota had to repair and remove an odor associated with it. later, i brought it in to have my gas tank level indicator repaired but was told that it was time consuming and basically was advised that the dashboard had to be taken out so, i didnt get it done. i replaced my battery, constantly had my oil changed, as the paint started to peel on my left front fender. tie rods were replaced that had broken, which was covered by the platinum coverage that i purchased for 1000.00. ive had a vsc logic relay replaced and trim repaired that was lifting off. now my coverage on the platinum plan was over 4-10-2010 on the 17th of august my rear window would not go down, about three days later the brake light came on. on the 19th the 4 wheel drive control initiated and when its initiated to go off the center will continue to be engaged, blinking. even till today when the vehicle is started up you have to dis-engage the 4 wheel drive. so i took it to toyota . thats when this final horror began. i had my oil changed (sunday), and the next day (monday) i took it back for service. after they ran a diagnostic trend heres what i was told: the rear window motor was bad and needed replacing even though they know of the problems associated with the rear windows. 690.00 master cylinder assembly.1165.00 ccnter differential.2134.00 serpentine belt and tensioner.492.00
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the abs brake warning light illuminated and the brakes became extremely stiff when depressed. the dealer replaced the vehicle skid control sensor but the failure recurred when leaving the dealer. the contact confirmed that he had experienced the failure once before but no repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were 88,000. updated 6/19/10 *cn updated 07/22/10*jb
I have a 2003 toyota sequoia. the vcs and abs lights have come on. the abs system is not working. the toyota dealer wants $3800 to replace vcs ecu. my vehicle was not covered under the recent recall but it should have been. the brakes currently work but feel different when braking.*tr
Vsc and vsc of lights are oncodes c1223 abs control system malfunction, c1231 steering angle sensor, and c1247 stroke sensor indicates needs the skid control ecu t 2.0 replaced skid control ecu 08/01/2010 check engine light found p0031 af sensor b1s1 t1.0 parts replaced. 6/01/2013 again vsc trac off service engine light on and dealership wants 1400.00 for new computer. *tr
2003 toyota sequoia vehicle skid control system applies brakes while accelerating. vehicle will come to a stop and loose power while accelerating. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. the vsc, trac off, and abs light was illuminated on the instrument control panel. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. the current and failure mileages were 108000.
I have a 2003 toyota sequoia that has been regularly serviced at a toyota dealership and has had no abs brake issues until this incident. abruptly as i was driving, all the vsc/trac lights on the dashboard came on, there was a grinding noise under the car and the car came to a halt. i took the car to the dealer the next day (as it happened on a sunday) and was told this was a known defect in sequoias, but as the car was past it's warranty period it would cost me $1800 to fix. if this is a known defect that has the capability of causing a serious accident because of the abruptness of the issue while driving, i don't understand why this is not a recall issue. will it take someone having a fatal crash because of this to get some action on this issue? *tr
The dash vsc trac & abs skid control warning lights on my 2003 toyota sequoia 2wd have been on constantly for a period of time. they first appeared when i started my engine before i even placed the vehicle in drive. this is my second such failure of this system. the first occurrence was just weeks after the factory warranty expired. the original estimate to repair was about $2100. after some complaining, the dealer split the cost with me. this should be recalled by the manufacturer or, by government intervention due to the severity of the defect and the potential for accidents and/or death resulting from the defective computer system causing the vehicle to lock up and lose power. *tr
Tl*the contact owns 2003 toyota sequoia. while driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions and applying pressure to the brake pedal there was a grinding noise and the vehicle began shaking. the vehicle began pulling to the right and failed to slow down. the entire warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the driver applied continuous force to the brake pedal in order to decrease the speed of the vehicle. an authorized dealer stated that the failure was contributed to the anti-lock brake system. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction. the contact had concerns of the safety hazard. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 110,000. the current mileage was 116,000.
My abs, vehicle skid control and trac control system has failed. trouble codes indicate system failure and will require new abs, trac and anti skid ecu. i have not had the repair done yet. i am concerned about the safety without these features. i am aware that there are several people having this same issue. *tr
I have had an issue with my 2003 toyota sequoia. the abs and vsc trac lights came on. i have searched online to find out about this problem and have found it to be a habitual problem. on the morning of may 24 i had a collision with a deer. all four brakes locked up and i went into a skid and hit the deer. the things that i have read is its a electrical problem but it is not. toyota has an issue here that puts its owners in an unsafe situation. this needs to be fixed. if there were habitual seat belt issues or airbag issues this would be taken care of. this is a major safety issue because i though i had working abs brakes and due to some kind of design failure i did not. *tr
Vehicle traction control, vehicle skid control, anti brake system lights come on when i first turn the car on. the brakes are nearly impossible to push in. after car is warmed up for 15 minutes seem to work fine. the dealership wants me to spend over $1000 for new part. *tr
While driving vehicle in heavy traffic, the vsc trac lights illuminated and power was lost. according to dealer, bill wright toyota, it will cost me approximately $1600 to conduct repairs which require an ecu change, even though this is a common problem and is mentioned several technical service bulletins issued by toyota motor corporation. when i questioned the immediate need for this repair, i was told that failure to have repairs effected presents a safety hazard. *tr
While driving along at city street speeds, during dry weather, on paved roads, my vsc trac and trac off lights come on. no other warning lights come on. then a buzzer sounds for about 3 seconds. then at the same time, a strange grinding sound comes from underneath the car, and the brakes seem to start working for no reason. i quickly pull over, turn off the car. i check the outside of the car and see no indication of running over anything. i then start the car and all the lights are back to normal (off). this happens about 2-3 times a month, for about a month or 2 now. i have not been able to determine any problems. *tr
My vsc/abs/skid is constantly on now and before it was only intermittently and now it is also making a disengaged sound. so i went to the dealer and they said i need to replace my skid control computer which will cost me about $1600 plus labor. this is too steep for me. the reason why i bought toyota because of their dependability. i'm really disappointed on how the dealer and the manufacturer handling this problem. there should another reason why vsc/abs/skid would malfunction. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. while driving between 5-10 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a noise and felt excessive vibration when the brake pedal was depressed. the failure occurs whenever the vehicle is in operation. the traction control and vsc warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the failure was related to the anti-skid computer system and recommended that it be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 63,000.
On 4 occasions dash light indicating vsc and brake problem appeared. each time the braking of the 2003 toyota sequoia was compromised. each time the truck was brought to toyota service center for repair. each toyota said they could not replicate the problem but replaced skid computer anyway. 8/20/08 problem recurred with dash brake indicator light coming on. braking again compromised, heard loud "clunking sound" coming from car while driving. immediately brought to scottsdale toyota service center. again, said they could not replicate problem and returned car with no repair. called toyota customer service and filed a complaint. toyota indicated complaint is now on record. problem with dash brake light coming on and braking diminished recurred again 8/27/08. after shutting engine off, indicator no longer lit and braking back to normal. i fear for both my safety and my families. simple google search indicates a large number of sequoia owners are having the same problem. *tr
03 toyota sequoia. vsc, abs, parking brake light came on. at 52,000 miles while driving. yaw sensor defective. *tr
The abs and skid control lights are on in my 2003 toyota sequoia. the dealer states that the skid control computer needs to be replaced. so right now, there is no skid control or abs available on my car because of this computer is bad. toyota will not do anything about it and i have filed a complaint case 200810010613. this is a safety issue. *tr
2003 toyota skid control computer, i am writing to request that a formal complaint be filed to toyota. i recently took my car into my local toyota dealership because of a few lights that we on in my dash. the specific lights were the vsc, vsc off and the abs lights. after doing some research i see that this is a fairly common problem with toyota and their skid control computers. the problem is that it is not covered under the powertrain warranty and is a very expensive part to have replaced. my quote was for $1800 excluding tax. i purchased the vehicle with 47,000 miles and was offered an extended warranty up to 60,000, but it was a very expensive extended warranty so i decided to pass. the manufactures warranty for my car was 55,000 miles i believe and the lights came on at 55,500 miles....of course. i sincerely hope that there can be some sort of resolve for this such as a recall of the skid control computer or changing this issue to be covered under the power train section of the warranty as it is unfair for there to be so many people to be having the same problem around the same mileage and some of those people have serious consequences to the computers malfunction such as accidents and possible death. please take whatever action necessary to solve this unnecessary issue. *tr
Vehicle traction control, vehicle skid control, anti brake system lights have come on causing concerns of safety for my family. *tr
Traction control light, skid control light, abs light and check engine light all just came on while driving down the road. no previous problem noted. *tr
I purchased a 2003 toyota sequoia in november 2007. it has been at the dealer for the same problem 5 times. they just had a "rep" to come to this location to test the vehicle and they cannot find the problem. this problem has caused me to almost get in an accident as well as my wife. the skid control light will flash after making a turn (under normal conditions, going very slow) and the vehicle will not allow you to accelerate for 2 to 3 seconds. this problem occurs intermittently. it may go a week or 2 without occurring (depending on how much it is driven), and then the problem will surface. they replaced the main computer module, but the bottom line is that the problem still exist and this could become a serious matter for my family. it is not my fault that the problem does not occur when the dealership checks it or that an error code does not show up. the problem is there and something should be done about this. *tr
Toyota sequoia 2003, vtrac and abs lights came up on the dash during a very wet interstate trek to michigan from california. had no cruise control before this, the cruise control failed the year before during the same wet trek across country! the toyota dealer in saginaw michigan told us that the computer controlling the vtrac and abs was displaying fault codes and needed to be replaced, cost $1200. this is a 5 year old vehicle with 70k miles on it now (the fault happened around 66k miles) which is now much harder to handle under heavy braking, which we need more and more with the low quality drivers out there. if the gas prices weren't so high, this truck would be out of here here, but we can't afford to sell it for the current value, and buy another vehicle, so this suv will now be limited to trips where we need the storage/towing capacity. so, even though we have 2 cars, we only really have 1 1/2 now. *tr
Toyota sequoia vsc abs problem on this 2003 sequoia the abs brakes intermittently come on without warning, and with out the driver braking. this has happened only at slow speeds thus far. the vsc indicator lights also come on. *tr
I have a 2003 toyota sequoia limited 4x4. i have a problem with vsc/ trac light come and goes. i went to dealer when the car was under bumper to bumper warranty, dealer told me that i have low brake fluid causing that problem. but car was driven less than 20,000 miles at that time. now car is out of warranty and i found out i have problem with computers controlling vsc. and it will cost me alot. i have found that lots of sequoia having similar problem as mine. i like to know what has to be done for this matter. the car now little under 40,000 miles. *tr
Abs, vsc, and trac lights illuminated on engine start and will not extinguish. dealer ran codes, claims faulty master cylinder pressure sensor, stroke sensor, yaw rate sensor, and skid ecu: $2777.50. vehicle mileage 69872. at approx 48k miles similar event with addition of engine light, replaced o2 sensor and resolved. much experience with aircraft abs tells me very unlikely all sensors and computers fail simultaneous but dealer sticking to script, claims first ever seen this type problem. *tr
Vsc/abs skid control ecu failure on 2003 sequoia @ 56,410 miles (orignal owner). ecu failure is a known issue by every toyota sequoia owner, but toyota claims it's limited. this failure requires that vsc/abs skid control ecu / yaw rate sensor be replaced. the repair cost was $794.20 for part and labor at the local toyota dealer. now, considering the severity of the defect and number of complaints on this site i'm very suprized not to see a recall notice to date. *tr
On going problems with vsc. 2003 (41,000 miles) toyota sequoia has been to the dealership 3 times now for the vsc activating and brakes engaging while turning a corner in normal, dry conditions. from 3 mph to more than 15+ mph the vsc engages and brakes are applied. very dangerous! dealership has fixed problem each of the 3 times. car warranty is now over and problem persists. dealership says for $1500. they will replace the vsc computer...utter non-sense!!! very upset that toyota continues to hide from this problem. while researching on line i have easily found hundreds of similar cases and complaints.....please do something!!!!!! *tr
Failure of skid control ecu. failure initially intermittent, but e-brake light stays on to identify the problem. intermittent problem not identifiable, but failure prevents skid control from working. *tr
2003 toyota sequoia with inadequate brakes. consumer states that he needs to stay further back from other vehicles. he also states that the rotors were warped a second time a week after having them machined. *kb the consumer stated the problem exacerbated when he would tow a small utility trailer. the consumer stated he was aware that a tsb had been issued which stated the brakes were too small for the weight of the vehicle. *jb
Toyota has a widespread problem with their vsc system. my dealer wants $1800 to fix what toyota knows is a huge widespread problem for toyota tundra/sequoia. this is ridiculous and toyota needs to replace the vsc computer and engine control computer (ecc) for free. what a bunch of non-sense! *tr
Abs brake system failure. 2003 toyota sequoia. *jb
Vsc/abs skid control ecu failure. the dealership is saying that my 2003 toyota sequoia limited 2 wd 53,500 miles needs a new abs computer at a cost of $3,600. approximately 2 years ago i had the exact same thing happen, the car actually froze up and the dealership had it towed to their location to fix it, they said it was the third member and replaced that. now the same thing is happening and they won't do anything. *tr
The brakes on my 2003 toyota sequoia are obviously undersized for the vehicle weight. although factory equipped for towing, this is exasperated when pulling a trailer. there is no way i can stop if following at the recommended interval and the person in front of me stops hard. i have had to veer onto the shoulder numerous times to avoid a rear-end collision, and i maintain a greater distance than is suggested between my vehicle and the vehicle in front of me. i feel this should be a safety recall. toyota has admitted a design flaw by issuing a technical service bulletin on how to install larger brakes on this vehicle. *tr
2003 toyota sequoia (2wd) without warning the vsc/trac system engaged while turning on dry pavement causing a loss in acceleration. this was the initial incident which was followed by multiple other incidents at random intervals. incidents occurred while making both left and right turns from a turning or stopping position. trac off "button" does not disengage the system as indicated in the owner's manual from a low speed. local dealership ran diagnostic test and recommended new tires/brakes but could not identify any "problems" with the vsc system other than the vsc system had engaged. after 4 new tires and new rear brakes were installed service tech drove vehicle and experienced the issue. he recommended documenting when the incidents occurred and under what circumstances in order to determine repair options. the vsc system continues to engage randomly causing a loss in acceleration when this occurs and is dangerous if driver has need to pull into traffic in instances such as turning onto major roadways. *tr
I was driving my car as usual to church on sunday 7/29/2007 when i noticed my check engine light, the trac off light and the vsc lights were on after reading the owners manual i determined that the car needed to be taken to toyota. i took the car in and was told that the repair was not covered and it would cost me almost 2500.00 to repair. when talking to the associate, he explained to me that the systems that had gone bad had to do with the way the vehicle will be controlled while driving and the anti-lock brakes. when i questioned him about the safety of driving the vehicle he told me that people had been driving without those units for years and my breaks may lock up but don't try to stop while going fast. i informed him that toyota had replaced the computer board for my breaks earlier (brake lights still coming on) and asked if it was possible that these things were going bad at the same time. he said it was not. i feel that this is a safety hazard to me and my family and should be taken care of. in trying to find some kind of solution to this problem, i read on tundra solutions where others have had this same problem. i was also told that both will need to be replaced at the same time. 2500.00 is a lot of money for a single parent. nothing was done to correct this problem. what do i do? *tr
My vsc/trac sensor has been going on and off and every time i needed to have it check, the problem never appears. except for today, the light has stayed on and my mechanic was able to diagnosed and verified it with toyota's tsb as a defective vsc/trac ecu and he recommended that i take it to a dealer for the replacement and installation of the new ecu. several tsb's are posted on the nhtsa website regarding this problem for my vehicle year and make. my complaint is, i feel that it is unacceptable that a computer device that plays a vital role in the safety performance of the vehicle should not have failed within 5 years, especially for a considerable cost to have it replace after the warranty period. toyota should have at least sent out notices to the owners regarding this potential problem. *jb
I am another victim of the ongoing problem for 2003 toyota sequoia, vcs traction control light on. so this past weekend being on a trip the light come on and we took it to the dealership and gaves us a surprise repair $1,448.50 for part 89541-0c062 and 896300c011 $751.54 so with labor some in the 2,500 dls. so i told the service guy what was the risk of driving this unit like that. in my own words is like having an 1980's suburban. my husband did a research on the internet on tundrasulutions etc. and there are a lot of cases of this problem arousing around 40,000 miles or less. we have a 4 year old son and we are "scared" to drive this truck without of any of the safety features now i was told that the traction control computer and the main computer needed to replace and that this will disable abs and traction controls. so this means that i have a 1980 suburban. we are very upset because we call toyota and they can't do anything about it, they refer me to the dealership service manager that probably can offer me a discount outside warranty. we need nhtsa to start investigating this issue there are thousands of users that already paid for this repair that don't even know how to file a complaint. don't let this issue get out of hand, please don't waint until there are people hurt. my truck is worth around 14,000 the repair is 2500 the repair is 18% worth of the whole vehicle. toyota knows about this problem if they sell a car with defective parts they should replace it. *tr
The trac off and vsc trac light are on on my 2003 toyota sequoia with only 46,422 miles. skid control will kick in even when driving less than 5 mph. engine also stalled once out on busy street as skid control kicked in. dealer diagnostic indicated bad skid control computer so abs and skid features will not function properly. this seems to be a common problem with 2001-2002 and early 2003 toyota sequoia. *tr
2003 toyota sequoia with 64000 miles. vsc/abd lights came on and did come off. the brakes failed on one occasion and quickly came back, but made metal grinding noise. car was brought to dealer, and was out of warranty. i wa s being told o replace the computer system. they said since there was a tsb, that they might be able to cover 1/2 the cost. there should be a recall on this problem. *ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the abs/dsc warning light intermittently illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer assured the contact that the issue was nothing to worry about and was not a big deal. the issue was later discovered to be a communication error between the skid control and the ecm. the service dealer stated that the ecm should be replaced; however, the steering angle on the vehicle was also off and a re-calibration was performed. afterwards, while driving between 30-40 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and heard a loud thumping noise. she felt vibrations coming from the brake pedal. while slowing down and switching from braking to acceleration, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and coasted momentarily until reaching full acceleration. the failure mileage was 83,106 and current mileage was 99,000.
My 2003 toyota sequoia has had multiple failures of it abs ecu translate. the abs ecu translate has been replaced twice and had been into the dealership six times without a resolution to the problem. the brake warning light has come on mutiple times.*jb
