We have classified the 189 complaints from 2002 Toyota Sequoia about ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph the vsc and trac control system activated independently with the warning indicators illuminated. a loud grinding noise emitted from the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. the failure recurred two times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and they were unable to detect a trouble code nor duplicate the failure. the vsc and trac control system wires were disabled. there was a recall associated with the 2003 model under nhtsa campaign id number 10v176000 (electronic stability control , traction control system). the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 128,000.
I was traveling on the highway at approximately 70mph when what sounded to be the right front abs come on jerking my vehicle to the right nearly colliding with the vehicle next to me. immediately after the brake locking up, which lasted for about a second, the vehicle skid control "off" light came on and a loud beeping noise was heard. i parked, shopped, and the lights were off when returning to the vehicle. then the incident happened once more in the five mile drive home from the market on the highway almost causing a vehicle to crash into the rear of mine and pulling me nearly uncontrollably into the wall. *tr
Driving on dry, straight highway when vsc light and trac light come on and beeping started. vehicle starting trying to engage 4wd i think...lots of grinding in the front end and steering shaking. went on for about 2 minutes then stopped. vehicle not easy to control when this happened. has happened multiple times since. taking to mechanic this week. not safe for wife and kids to be driving. *tr
I was driving on a highway around 10:30pm, and all of a sudden i hear grinding noise and vsc/trac light goes on. reduced speed because i felt as though i may lose control of vehicle. vsc/trac light stays on, then goes off. less than 30 minutes later, i hear beeping noise and vsc/trac light comes back on. this same incident has happened a week ago, where i pulled over the side of the road thinking it was a flat because i felt like i was losing control then too, but no flat. trac control issue then too (hearing grinding noise). concerned because it seems i may lose control. *tr
While driving my 2002 toyota sequoia, i pulled into traffic and all of a sudden the truck lost power as cars swerved around me and a violent grinding noise started. a skid control light started flashing. i could feel the grinding on the brake pedal. after a few seconds, the truck beeped and 2 more lights came on. the "trac off" and "vsc" came on. after that the truck drove normal. this has happened multiple times now! i no longer feel safe on the road as this seems to happen at any moment. i have read all about this problem on the internet. many sequoia owners have had these same problems. why will toyota not fix these problems??? what has to happen for them to feel responsible?? *tr
Loyal toyota owner. all of a sudden beeping, grinding noise, vsc/trac light goes on, passenger front brake locks & very difficult to control the vehicle pulling to one side. the speed was estimated at 35-50 mph, dry road conditions. this problem had been noted several times randomly vehicle skid control (vsc) simply engages at normal speeds. it's the exact same problem as the 2003 which the vsc system & components was recalled. disappointed with toyota 2002 not included with recall! unsafe to drive and is dangerous! an accident waiting to happen! *tr
Trac off, vsc trac lights came on as the rear wheel locked up for a sec . loss of power , vehicle pulled hard to the right almost causing collision with 18 wheeler on highway. *tr
While traveling home at normal speed the vsc/trac lights came on and the vehicle began vibrating and making a grinding noise. after stopping on the side of the road, i called my husband and was told to turn the vehicle off and on to possibly reset the vsc/trac. it seemed to work briefly but it started to do it again. after making it home, my husband drove the vehicle initially without any issues. however, he attempted to take the vehicle to the store and the problem started again. he noted audible alerts and the vsc/trac lights illuminating, grinding from what seemed to be the passenger side front tire. he had to pull off to the side of the road; however, found it difficult to control the vehicle. the speed was estimated at 35-40 mph, dry conditions with no obvious road conditions or issues. smoke was observed coming from the passenger front of the vehicle. this problem had been noted several time randomly over the past two years, but has seemingly been resolved by turning the vehicle off and back on. this was the first time that the issue has persisted, and the increased difficulty in steering. *tr
I was driving on the freeway on a dry day, traveling at 65 mph and noticed the trac control, abs, and brake lights all illuminate. i thought this was interesting. as i drove at steady 65mph i noticed the vehicle become unstable, i could feel the rear end being very wish-washy, to the point i had to slow the vehicle down to about 55 mph so that it would feel more stable. i drive this same stretch of freeway often and have never had the truck act like this until the lights became illuminated. i took the truck to my mechanic, they performed some diagnostic testing and did some investigating and found nothing wrong, no tripped codes or anything else pointing to something needing to be replaced. while they worked on the vehicle they had at some point disconnected the battery, resetting the computer, this seemed to solve the problem until last week, 9/23/2013 when the lights same lights illuminated again. this second time i never noticed the rear-end being slippery as i did in the first case. thank goodness. i was on a long trip 600 miles from home. i worried that when these lights are illuminated that if i'm required to do a quick stop or maneuver to avoid something i may end up in a really bad situation. but with the lights being illuminated twice in a year span i'm beginning to think that this could be an ongoing problem. i'm don't like the unpredictability of when the lights illuminate. *tr
Vehicle skid control simply engages at normal speeds and normal driving conditions. hard grinding, pulling to the right or left and almost no braking. yes, they recalled 2003 to 05 but not 2002? why? it's the exact same problem. someone will be injured at some point and in fact, there are some accounts of injury. in my family's case, this has happened while driving about 8 times since we purchased this from a private dealer and after we had a certified mechanic check it out. this is on toyota. please investigate this. this is total negligence and disregard for individual safety. *tr
My 2002 sequoia was going 68mph when, for no reason, the vsc (veh.stability control) indicator lite began flashing.the truck pulled left, the brakes seemed to be applying unevenly, and there was a grinding noise.i nearly had an accident and pulled over. shut engine off for 5 minutes, restarted, and truck drove normal (vsc lite was out).did same thing the next day at 55mph. my research showed that 2003 sequoias did the same thing, and atoyota recall of 2003 models(50,000) were fixed by toyota. i spoke to[xxx] of toyota customer experience center, who refused to help me.why is my truck treated any different than the 2003 model doing the same thing !!?? is my safety not important too? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
2002 toyota sequoia. consumer writes in regards to a safety concern involving the vsc/trac system *tgw the consumer stated the vsc/trac did not operate properly and caused the vehicle to be unstable. the consumer stated a recall was issued for the 2003 model and the 2002 model should have been included as well.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving between 20 and 35 mph, the stability control system activated independently without warning. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, turned off the engine, and waited a few minutes. the contact restarted the vehicle and the stability control reset back to normal. the vehicle was taken to mossy toyota (located at 4555 mission bay dr, san diego, ca 92109) where it was diagnosed that the ecu software needed to updated or replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. ...updated 11/21/17 *bf *tr
It seems electronic control system thinks vehicle is out of control when it is not. vsc activates in random conditions at random times at speeds between 30-65 mph. vehicle experiences lose of power, pulling to one side and inadequate braking. vehicle becomes unsafe to drive and is dangerous! a recall on the vsc system & components for this vehicle is in order. *tr
When driving at highway speed, in dry conditions, the vehicle skid control (vsc) and traction control system (trac) warning lights suddenly began flashing and beeping. the steering wheel began difficult to control and a loud grinding noise came from the brake pedal as the abs system was activated. this made for a very dangerous situation as the vehicle was very difficult to control in heavy traffic! after about five seconds, the grinding/abs activation and warning beeps stopped, but the warning lights stayed illuminated. when taking the next highway offramp and applying the brakes, the warning lights and grinding started again and this time it almost caused an accident when the braking was overridden by the abs! only after turning the car off and restarting did the warning lights turn off. the 2003 sequoia was recalled for this same problem. the 2002 sequoia should also be recalled. does there have to be accidents and fatalities before this will happen?? toyota needs to take responsibility for this dangerous defect. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vsc warning light illuminated on the instrument panel as the front end of the vehicle tilted forward abnormally. in addition, the front passenger side tire shook violently. the vehicle was moved off the roadway and later restarted, as it functioned properly. the vehicle was then taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the tires needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the contact was then advised that a censor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 166,000.
Normally happens at low speed while accelerating. the skidding car symbol flashes, a warning beeper beeps several times, there is a noticeable swerve to the right accompanied by a grinding noise. the, trac off and the vsc off, lights come on and i am able to continue merrily on my way unannoyed, there is no apparent reduction in braking ability or steering control. i just have the "idiot" lights on the dash until i turn off the ignition. when i next drive the vehicle i am very wary until it happens again, maybe immediately, or 10 to 20 miles. but it always happens. the dealer says a new yaw rate sensor and vsc ecu will fix it. about $1800.00 above the $105.00 already paid for the diagnostic fee. what really gets my "goat" is: there is a recall for the "early" 2003 models for this same problem.
Was driving on the interstate in the left hand lane. tried to merge into the right hand lane and noticed a car in my blind spot so i went back into the left lane. however, my vsc/abs lights went on, the car beeped, made a heavy grinding noise, and then, with much force, veered hard to the right. i tried to steer it back to the left hand lane, the other drivers saw me wrestling with my steering wheel and the car started to fishtail so fortunately they stayed well behind me. the car became impossible to control and steer and braking did not help. despite my best efforts to control the car, apply the brakes, steer out of the skidding and fishtailing, my car then went over into the right lane, over to the shoulder, and then the wheel sunk into the grass next to the shoulder where the vehicle rolled over several times. my son and i were airlifted to the trauma unit. i suffered 2 broken vertebrae in the c area of my neck and a compressed disc in the t region of my spine, concussion, cuts, bruises, glass embedded near my eye, as well as a splenic aneurysm. my son had a concussion, wound on the head that required stitches, cuts, bruises and a sprained ankle. my son and i were both unconscious at the accident scene.my two daughters had minor cuts, sprains, and bruises. we were fortunate to have come out of this alive and not to have hit anyone else. i am still in a neck brace and undergoing medical treatment. toyota needs to recall this model as soon as possible. we could have all been killed. unfortunately, my car was totaled and there was no black box in this model. i will never buy a car from toyota again. however, for the safety of others, i do hope they recall this model as i would hate for others to suffer what we had to suffer, or worse. *tr updated 10/19/12 *cn updated 10/23/2012 *js
While driving during normal dry conditions, vsc alarm started to go off followed by loss of control of brakes. was able to pull over without incident and at about 10 mph the alarm shutoff and the amber trac off light and vsc trac light annunciated and all driving conditions were normal again. i'm guessing at this point the system was disabled in the trac off mode. i'm in the process of bringing the car to the dealer for a diagnostic however i've read numerous items online of people having this problem and toyota doesn't seem to help (recall). it is quite expensive also. *tr
We just bought this 2002 toyota sequoia to use for towing as well as to carry our family around in. we had our choice between an expedition, a tahoe and this sequoia. knowing the reliability of a toyota we were confident this was a good choice for our family. we have had the car approximately 3 weeks and as my husband was towing a full loaded trailer down a major interstate the vsc light flashed on and off a few times. thinking it was probably nothing he came home, mentioned it to me and started looking up information. what we found was incredible! this seems to be a huge problem that toyota is unwilling to acknowledge or fix or even have a fix for. later that day my husband was pulling into the driveway, suddenly the vsc trac light came back on, the car made a loud beeping noise and abruptly lurched to the right! immediately after coming in, i started calling toyota dealerships. i was told this was a common problem however it could cost up to $4500 to fix! the service adviser then went on to tell me step by step what they would do to fix the problem. first, by changing the yaw rate sensor than the skid control computer and if that didn't work the steering sensor, than the brake booster and finally the master cylinder. however, i then learned that "maybe" after doing all these repairs that it "might" fix the problem! we then drove the car to our mechanic, which is quite a ways away, and as we were nearing our destination (i was driving this time) i was pressing the brake to slow down in traffic and all of a sudden the car lurched to the right, the lights started flicking on again and the car made a beeping noise! the mechanic said the car was pulling several different codes so he wasn't sure what was wrong with it and it would be trial and error to fix it. toyota--you know something is wrong. fix it before someone gets hurt! *js
Started the vehicle and the vsc and the trac off lights illuminated and would not turn off. took to authorized toyota service center. was indicated that this is a common issue with toyota sequoia and that there has been a service recall on 2003 models but not for 2002. appears to be a common problem across model years. *js
My 2002 sequoia keeps making a grinding noise when i hit the gas from a stop light and the stability control keeps coming on and there is a loss of power and i cant do nothing until he stability control quits what its doing. point blank toyota needs to do something with all these 2002 sequoias and there failing traction control system. there are peoples lives at stake and i've done had all the wheel sensors cleaned and the system reset and the problem is still there. what if it was your kids that had to drive an uncontrollable vehicle you would do everything you could to see what the problem was or if it can be fixed. were spending lots of money fixing these sequoias and it needs to stop. all im asking is please just to consider recalling these dangerous vehicles. *tr
Vsc light, trac off light and check engine light all came on at the same time. i took vehicle to autozone and they checked the computer with the result error 5 cylinder misfire, for the check engine light, the other 2 warning lights they could not give me any advice on. *tr
I have a sequoia 2002. no previous history of big mechanical or electrical problems. recently i experience an incident were i lost control of the vehicle while driving in the highway. the mechanic told me i have a problem with the yaw rate sensor and that it was very costly to repair. i have found out that this is a common problem that many sequoia owners have experience. i understand my vehicle is way past warranty period but let me tell you, in security issues warranties does not expires and toyota should provide for repairs or recall or whatever resources they have to correct this problem. *tr
Driving at 60 mph the vsc lights came on and the vehicle went to the right by itself.i slow down, and then the skid traction lights came on and a loud noise was coming out of the front....i think that if i was driving faster i could of have an accident...the same thing happened yesterday... *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that vehicle stability control light abnormally illuminated, causing the vehicle to decelerate independently. the contact stated that he turned the vehicle stability control off but it re-engaged independently as the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 77,000.
In stop and go traffic at launch vehicle abs engaged without warning repeatedly with loud grinding noises and the abs light, traction light and vehicle stability control light all came up. stopped vehicle, turned off engine, waited a few minutes and all lights were gone upon restart. however this problem worsened considerably and more often through the october and november 2011 months, to the point of occurring every time the vehicle is driven as the date of this writing, december 3rd 2011. new worsened symptoms now include flashing vsc (vehicle stability control) at launch from a stop, which cuts engine power and compromises accurate steering. sometimes the abs, trac and vsc lights come up immediately, sometimes only after repeated intrusive activations of abs/trac/vsc. all these warning lights also stayed on once for two entire days after leaving the vehicle rest overnight. all these dangerous random interventions of the abs/trac/vsc electronics started after the front rotors and pads were changed by a professional mechanic (a1-unity body, 1420 howe st in vancouver, bc, canada). the vehicle was federally and provincially inspected for canadian importation by the same mechanic before these problems started to happen. it was deemed to be in exceptional mechanical and working condition for its age and mileage. however the vehicle is now longer safe to drive because of this abs/trac/vsc defect, despite it being otherwise perfectly drivable. toyota must issue the same recalls that they posted for defective trac and vsc for the 2003 year sequoia models for the 2002 sequoia models. sequoia vehicles haven't received any hardware or software updates as far as abs/trac/vsc systems are concerned between 2001 and 2003, proof being that subsequent model years from 2001 all experience the same defects for the same reasons. 2001-2002 sequoia vsc recalls need to be issued now! *tr
The abs light is on constantly even though the vehicle has not suffered any incidents, the vsc/track light is on sometimes it lasts up to one week until i disconnect the negative cable of the battery, recently the security light started flashing constantly, i don't know much about cars and is already altering my blood pressure. *tr
The vsc off indicator light along with the vsc and skid light and buzzer activates. this causes the skid control to activate front brakes on one side with a grinding noise and the steering wheel to pull hard to one side. i'm concerned this may cause an accident !
The vsc/trac activation and system warning lights came on while the system intermittently activated, locking up/letting go of the right rear tire while on dry level pavement and driving forward. i took it to a shop, which found a problem in a steering sensor, "the computer" and possibly a wheel sensor. they suggested that the system be disabled until it could be troubleshoot in more detail. i had them disable it so that it could be driven without the danger of a wheel locking up on the highway. it is still disabled, with dash system warning lights on during operation. *tr
On august 13, 2011 while traveling on i-75 south of atlanta a vehicle left the road & attempted to return and over corrected, he struck our sequoia with such force in the rear driver side passenger door that the rear of the our sequoia immediately turned sideways and we begin to flip. after flipping we landed on the passenger side and slid approx 1/4 of a mile before coming to resting place in the median on the passengers side. my wife &13 year old son were severely injured, myself and my other 2 sons sustained injuries but none were life threatening. neither my wife's nor my sons seat belt locked and once the windows blew out my son was dragged down the interstate causing severe injuries to his head, back, arm and leg. my wife sustained worse injuries, her arm 6 inches & 6 inches below her elbow was cut off. none of the side curtain airbags deployed and neither seatbelt "fired" properly allowing my wife and son to sustain life altering injuries. no one doubts that if the safety features we paid additional $ for had functioned properly, the outcome could have been much better. soon after the accident i contacted toyota to have the incident investigated. an "independent" investigator read the vehicle edr (blackbox) soon thereafter i received a letter stating that toyota had no responsibility. when i called and spoke to the toyota rep that signed the letter, he was immediately on the defensive. he yelled and tried using intimidation techniques to get me to "go away". my wife is now permanently disabled and unable to work as an rn. i have owned 7 toyota vehicles & paid extra for the side curtain airbags, we as consumers have been deceived by toyota selling us on safety and reliability. i will never own another toyota. i take every opportunity to tell other perspective car purchasers my story & the failure of toyota to take care of their loyal owners. buyer beware. *tr
Same problem like everyone else, traction control, vsc, brake light, and abs light on. dealership says no recall but they recalled all 2003 models for the same issue. abs computer module. part# 89541-0c050. vehicle lights are off when vehicle is started, after 2-3 miles all the lights come on then the car is hard to handle due to traction control making the car unstabable. also with abs light on, braking is very bad. constant fight to keep the vehicle straight during braking. *tt
The vehicle is a toyota sequoia 2002 2 wheel drive, and i have had three incidents so far. the first time was driving in the high way at a steady speed of 65 mph when the car all of the sudden jerked to the left and a beeping went off and the track off and vsc track came on. the problem is that there is no warning at all and it just happen in a matter of seconds. my concern is that i use this vehicle just when my family is with me. i wonder if accidents with fatalities need to occur before somebody do something about it. *tr
i have experienced chilling and dangerous malfunctions of the abs, vsc/track system in my (owned since new) 2002 sequoia. the "vsc/vsc track" lights illuminate and a disconnect alarm (beeping tone) is initiated. the system failure pulls the car abruptly off course. immediate correction must be made to stay on the road. this has happened several times within the past 6 months with the system automatically re-setting itself after turning off the key and re-starting the engine. today's incident was the most violent and the system does not re-set. probably a good thing. looking at user complaints on the internet causes one to wonder why the public has not been protected by the nhtsa requiring a recall. my experience has been toyota dealerships are turning their backs on this issue. for safety sake, this should not be ignored!! i find it hard to believe that we can spend time and money to preserve a salamander in this country and yet ignore a highway safety issue such as this. the complaints on this issue have been many and around for a while. so many of us out here are reaching out to you for help. please help by considering a recall on these vehicles. very truly yours,...an experienced auto mechanic, licensed and experienced (a&p) aircraft mechanic, gulfstream 550 safety & standards pilot. *tr
Takata recall we have had the vehicle skid control problem for a couple of years now.we are only owners of this vehicle since we purchase it. the lights comes on with a jerk of a movement to engage thevrc control lights on.
My 2002 toyota sequoia has a defective sensor for the vsc, brake system. i see where the 2003 sequoia is covered, but not the 2002's. please tell me why this is the case, when the same problem is occurring. *tr
I have owned my 2002 toyota sequoia since january of 2002. since then we have had numerous problems with the brakes and now the vsc/abs skid control. for starters the front brake pads and rotors had to be changed and re-surfaced with approximately 30,000 miles on the vehicle. then the same thing again with approximately 60,000 miles. before the second repair i did some research and saw there was a tsb for larger calipers and rotors on the vehicle. this is a classic case of cost cutting and under-engineering to increase profit margins. i went to my local toyota dealership and ask for the repair to be done by toyota at their expense. they would not do this for me. now with approximately 99,000 miles on the car i have a failure of the vsc/abs skid control. this is going to be a very expensive repair. i want toyota to finally own up to my situation. the vsc/abs problem is very frequent among my year model and deserves a recall. once this system is de-activated by failure the sequoia becomes less manuverable and more dangerous to its occupants and all those cars it shares the road with. please join me and do what you can to make toyota make both the underpowered rotors and calipers and the abs skid control system mandatory recall items for the 02 sequoia. *tr
Noticed problem with vehicle traction when driving at low speed in wet or snowy weather. problem with acceleration and traction when accelerating. heard a ratcheting sound and no traction when trying to accelerate from a stopped position on a wet road. after some research it sounds very similar to earlier recall with nhtsa campaign id: 10v17600 for toyota sequoia vehicles manufactured between april 1, 2002 through april 17, 2003. called toyota service line on 11/9/2010 and they informed us that this recall doesn't apply to our vehicle since our vehicle was apparently manufactured on 3/8/2002 (a few weeks earlier than the recall covers). we live in a very dry climate with very little to no precipitation but noticed it again after rainfall. filed a case# [xxx]on 12/10/13 with toyota with no response. please help! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Vsc/abs/skid light comes on intermittently, at differing speeds, at random intervals, accompanied by grinding noise and braking action. during some of these random occurrences, especially when driving at highway speeds, the action can pull the car quickly and forcefully to the right and on a few occasions this has almost resulted in loss of control. i read on edmunds.com and other sites (including http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1gen-sequoia/76829-file-complaint-nhtsa-regarding-vsc-abs/) that this is a well-known, and well documented problem! why haven't you mandated a recall for this dangerous situation????!!! i'm concerned that my wife may be driving down the interstate and the problem will suddenly and violently pull the car to the right, and she will hit another car or lose control and crash. how many crashes, injuries, and, heaven forbid, deaths, will have to happen before you act? *tr
I have been having the same problem with my 02' sequoia. at first the vsc trac light/ vsc off would come on & go off after turning engine off. then it started staying on along w/ abs light & brake. all the lights continue to stay on. my vehicle only has 126,800 miles which i consider less to be having an issue at this time. i'm a mother of three in which this is my primary vehicle that carries my precious cargo. i really do think that toyota should issue some kind of recall in regards to this matter, it clearly looks likes this is a problem w/ other sequoia owners & they need to stand behind there products. especially when it involves the safety of lives. it would be great if someone could help me w/ this matter. *tr
2002 toyota sequoia while driving at moderate speeds (40 - 50mph) abruptly pulls to the right, vsc traction lights come on, hear a grinding noise. after about 3 seconds the grinding noise stopped on 2 occasions and the pull to the right stops and seems fine. vsc traction lights stay on. dealer diagnosed the problem as the skid control computer or ecu - 650.00 and the yaw rate sensor 401.00. has occurred 4 times in the last 2 weeks. there is a recall on the 2003 sequoia electronic stability control system but not the 2002. there appear to be quite a few complaints about both of the parts that are mentioned above. very dangerous driving situation when it occurs. *tr
Toyota sequoia 2002 sr5(21,000mls) while accelerating onto the highway from a rolling position the vehicle develops a bucking and will not accelerate tracking light comes on and the wheels seem to be binding you are now creating a safety issue, you are now on the highway everyone is braking trying to avoid crashing into you, after a few seconds it stops as if it never happened, but the tracking light stays on. to get it off you have to stop switch off the vehicle then start again. this problem occurs never when you are traveling over 30 mls per hr. but often from a slow to a higher speed which is very dangerous when entering the highway i become very nervous. *tr
To start, i want to stress that i do not understand why there is no recall for this problem. the vsc trac, abs, skid control and brake lights all came on and stayed on as of the above date. prior to that date, the vsc trac and skid lights would come on for no reason, but would go off upon turning off and restarting the car. when the lights came on and stayed on, i read the owner's manual and based on that information, was worried the brakes would not work, so i called the dealer. when i spoke to someone in the dealer's repair shop about the problem before i brought the car in, he said that the warning lights meant that my abs system was gone and it would cost $2,000 to fix. he said that it was not covered by warranty or a recall. so, i took it to the nearest auto repair shop to my home, that i had used previously. they checked the warning lights with the computer diagnostic and could not find anything wrong. then, i took it to the dealer, and they checked the warning lights and said that the problem was low voltage with the battery. i had recently bought a new battery, so i took the car back to the first place, which checked the battery and said it was fine. so i received conflicting messages from the dealer. however, since other owners with my year/model toyota have had safety problems with the same issue and toyota has the same problem with the 2003 model and they have issued a recall, i believe it is a safety issue. i can't understand why no recall has been issued for the 2002 year. please look at all of the complaints about this exact issue from so many consumers (and i'm sure plenty of others who did not take the time to report it) and act before someone is seriously injured or killed!!!!!! *tr
2002 toyota sequoia vsc/ traction control system started to malfunction in june 2011 vehicle has 128,000 miles. took it to the dealership and they said that it needs a new yaw rate sensor @800.00dollars. also that there is a chance that this doesn't fix the problem the suv may need an ecu at a cost of an additional 900.00. that's crazy!!!! this has happened at all different range of speeds. happening more often lately and seems very dangerous when activates and makes the vehicle unstable. *tr
Trac light/vsc lights came on while driving down the road. then the car pulled to the right and a grinding noise sounding like the anti-locking brake mechanism is activating. this is an extremely dangerous malfunction. i've seen that the 2003 model has a recall out for the same thing, and after seeing many others having this same occurrence with the 2002 model, they should expand the date range to cover the 2002 as well! it happened twice this weekend and it's happened 4-5 times previous to this recent incident (one earlier incident had my stepdaughter driving the sequoia and the power shut completely off while driving!). the mechanics told us they couldn't pull any related codes the first time we took it in. we need to take this in again immediately, but why should i have to pay the full price when this is obviously a defective part they've created? i was traveling at 70 mph on interstate-10 the first time it happened this past weekend and in-town at a slower speed (40 mph) the second incident. luckily nobody was in the lane next to me or i'd have hit them for sure! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle began to veer to the right and made a growling noise. the vsc and the traction control lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact pulled over and read the owner's manual which indicated that it was fine to continue driving. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the vsc, ecu and an unknown sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 67,786. the current mileage was approximately 68,200.
My traction lights have been on and have remained on for several years now. my husband says my panel looks like a christmas tree. i have contacted the dealership to see if there was a recall but was advised there is not. i haven't had any issues, until this past weekend, other than not realizing i had engaged my emergency brake since the light constantly stays on. i nearly wrecked this weekend. it was dark and raining. i had to apply the brakes to miss another car, the brakes locked up and started sliding out of control. luckily i was able to get it stopped in time to avoid another accident. my traction control doesn't work either, i guess it went out when all the other control lights went out. i just wonder if the airbags work, hope i don't have to find out the hard way. i keep reading numerous complaints on the 2002 model but haven't seen a recall. appears there was a recall on the 2003 model for the same issues. my steering column is broken. i had it checked out several years ago. apparently the main metal component is broken and therefore my gears engagement doesn't light up when i am in drive. if someone else drives my car, they don't know what gear it's in. i ready many complaints about the same but no recall. my rear hatch handle has broken 2 times now within a year of the other which costs me $100 to repair each time. it appears to be cheaply made and plastic and it can't be repaired without a lot of labor to dismantle the rear door plate on the inside to install a new handle. my main concern is the electronic stability control system. *tr
About a year ago, i started to experience problems that's related to the vehicle stability control (vsc) system on my 2002 toyota sequoia. the problem occurs intermittently and when it does occurs, it happens during initial acceleration. during this time, the vsc light would start blinking and i would not be able to accelerate. braking would require tremendous force applied to activate it. there was at least one incident where the vsc activated during highway driving, but that incident lasted approximately 5 or so seconds. however, it did require that i suddenly apply the brake and started pumping it for the vsc to de-activate. due to the intermittent nature, i took the vehicle to a local repair shop for diagnostic and they did find that error codes were present relating to the vsc. though the problem could not be pinpointed on the initial visit to the repair shop. subsequent occurrences prompted me to bring the vehicle back to the repair shop for further diagnostic. eventually it was recommended to me to replace the "speed sensors" which i authorized. after the replacement, the problem tend to have gone away. recently, i started to intermittently experience a similar problem with vsc light blinking briefly whenever i pull out of a drive way performing at least an 80 degree turn. this time around the problem isn't as severe and is very infrequent. i would say in a week of commuting, i would experience it maybe once or twice. of course this is compared to previous incidents where i was experiencing the vsc problem almost half the time. earlier this week, i read there was a 2003 toyota sequoia recall which has the exact symptom and problem i've been experiencing on my 2002 sequoia. i strongly urge the nhtsa to recommend toyota to include the recall for 2002 sequoia model year as well. thank you for your attention and time! *tr
A couple of years back while driving at highway speed the 2002 toyota sequoia i was driving suddenly had the esc engage with out warning the brakes engaged and the suv made a grinding noise and the vsc trac light lit up... i took it to my dealer and $4000 later it was repaired: the repairs included replacing the abs computer and new brakes and rotors....now its june 2012 and its doing it again but now it engages randomly regardless of speed or terrain... i have done some research on my vehicle and have found out that toyota has issued a recall on the same problem but only on the year models 2003-2005...i called my dealer to report the problem and they confirmed my year model is not included in the recall... this is unacceptable please get toyota to own up to its responsibility and repair the defect...i never should have paid for the repair the first time but there is no way in [xxx] i am paying again for the same defect.... *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
