We have classified the 62 complaints from 2001 Toyota RAV4 about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
My 2001 silver toyota rav 4 had a sudden unintended acceleration problem when i was decelerating to a complete stop at an already congested intersection with traffic lights. i was applying brake pressure from 20 mph, down to 15,10,5, down to 2 mph, coming to a complete stop, my rav 4 engine suddenly started to rev-up/race wildly and very loud in a matter of 3, or 4-5 seconds (the engine/rpm sounded similar one would hear when you would be accelerating entering a freeway via the entrance ramp). my rav 4 shot forward so fast like it was on some rocket launching pad. my foot was on my brake pedal almost to the car floor and i could not stop the car from moving into the back - and rear ending the car in front of me which was about 10-15 feet in front of me, that was stopped waiting for the light to turn green at the already congested stop light intersection. damage was done to the rear end of the suv door hatch and the attached tire mounted on the back of the suv in front of me. damage on my rav 4 was car hood folding back and up and my front upper and lower section of my bumper and plastic grill area. i immediately reported the unintended acceleration problem to t he toyota motor company the next day and they sent a 3rd party engineering analysis to examine my car. the investigator spent 4-5 hours examining my car and couldn't elaborate his findings but has submitted the information he was able to retrieve, back to the toyota motor co. apparently, my 2001 rav 4 is a first generation model/version and didn't have the elaborate detailed edr devices installed in them, however some other device/devices, could possibly be retrieved? the final report by toyota taken by the 3rd party field engineering analysis will take 3-4 weeks from this report i have posted. a police report was filed (please see the scanned info- for further investigation).
My rav 4 2001 has about 140,000 miles on it and has developed a serious problem. to clarify, a massive acceleration problem is occurring when i've been driving the car for 15 to 20 minutes, then suddenly - while i'm at a stop light, the suv's engine races wildly loud like what you hear at the indy 500... it jerked and felt like it internally controlled my accelerator foot pad! i had to apply a massive amount of pressure on the brake pad before i had a chance to quickly shift my car into park to prevent running over pedestrians and hitting cars in front of me at the stop light! my rav 4 engine was still racing loudly wanting to shoot forward like a rocket! i have had the faulty ecm replacement recall done when toyota issued a warning to have the rav4 ecu unit replaced several years ago. now i'm experiencing this engine racing/acceleration problem with my rav 4. will my local toyota service center charge me for the parts and the labor to fix this defective mechanical problem?
The rav4 would not shift. the transmission needed to be replaced
The ecm on my 2001 rav4 was calibrated in 2008 by a local dealer. under recall 601. in 2008 the car had just over 63000 miles. it now has 124000 and the transmission is hard shifting again.
My wife was driving car and it started doing strange changes with the transmission, such as slipping between gear changes and jerking movements. at one point, she told me getting on freway on ramp was a hazard, because of irratic behavior of transmission!!
The automatic transmission is shifting irratically, sometimes it will take off slowly until the gear engages. sometimes there is a clunking sound as the transmission shifts gears.
My 2001 toyota rav4 has 63192 miles on it. it began exhibiting transmission/acceleration problems yesterday while driving my granddaughter from school, about a 2 mile round trip on city street traveling approximately 35-40mph. the car refused to pick up speed and began to jerk due to shifting/missing gears, all by its self. the car has an automatic transmission so should not exhibit these problems. i found out today that this was a known problem to toyota and there was a voluntary recall that i had no knowledge off. i contacted toyota and they refuse to assist with rectifying this problem saying the date for the recall has passed, but i was never notified of said recall to begin with. the problem just started and although the vehicle is 15 yo, it has always been immaculately maintained and serviced and only has 63k miles on it so should not be having any transmission issues. i want toyota to rectify this problem as it is a problem with their module and not due to the age or condition of the car. there have been many reports of this same issue with this exact vehicle year and model and toyota has knowledge of these issues. the car is not safe to drive and this should be addressed by toyota and fixed immediately. in an article found online, toyota admitted to this manufacturer defect and despite the defect, toyota did not offer any special warranty coverage. instead, the bulletin said repairs would be covered under the federal emissions warranty of 80,000 miles or eight years from the time the vehicle was sold. but this is not an issue with the age of the vehicle and it has less than 80k miles on it, and it is due to a manufacturer defect which should be covered.
Have been experiencing harsh shifting for the last week or so but the most debilitating transmission problem occurred on 6/5/2015 while driving 35 mph. i ended up driving directly home using "low" gear because i was afraid of damaging the car further. i am the original owner of this car and purchased it new in 2001. 7 years after purchase, back on 3/10/2008, it was serviced by toyota under a "special service campaign" where they reprogrammed the ecm under warranty. i imagine it was for the harsh shifting problem (see t-sb-0156-10). it has obviously come back 7 years later. programming only good for 7 years?
Vehicle shifts very harshly and jerks. i suspect it has something to do with the transmission and the electronic control module.
Harsh shift between 2 and 3, probably due to ecm failing
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle failed to shift gears without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the ecm computer module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 147,295.
I bought a toyota rav4 two weeks ago, and saw there was a recall on the engine control module, but assumed that toyota would replace it if mine needed replaced. my vehicle's ecm had been reprogrammed, so i assumed it would be fine. i was wrong. after about a week, my vehicle started shifting harshly, and i had to crawl along a busy expressway with my four-way lights on with cars flying past me. and i had to limp through intersections, then immediately stop my car from lurching forward -- what if a person had been walking across the intersection?? toyota says my vehicle's too old to be covered under the recall to replace the ecm. absolutely appalling. if their first recall obviously didn't work, owners should not have to pay for a huge mistake toyota made. it is only fair that this is covered for the lifetime of the car. it is not fair for people like myself who have to buy a used car. i don't know how this hasn't been investigated yet. it is obviously a safety issue seeing as the car crawls through busy intersections and someone could easily hit you. or you could be trying to merge onto a highway and the car could refuse to accelerate and a car could hit you then. or if it's a snowy or icy day and you try to climb a hill, you could easily not make it up the hill and roll backwards into the car behind you. or the transmission could go out altogether suddenly, seeing as this is a known risk when the car starts shifting harshly. we should not have to wait for someone to die or be seriously injured before there is a recall for the lifetime of the vehicle for this huge problem. it is only by the grace of god that i haven't been injured or anyone else around me. *tr
I purchased my 2001 toyota rav4 in july 2012,. now 2 years later and still owe a good amount on my car i am having the same issues with the ecm as the others. i called toyota and there is nothing they can do to assist people that are purchasing these cars that have not been taken care of. this issues i am dealing with include the transmission slipping and revving higher, or the loss of power when going from a complete stop. toyota helped the owners, with an " extended warranty" 10 years / 150000 miles. that is all good but the warranty was from the first date. basically from day 1. that is not fair to the people who purchase these cars second hand with no knowledge of the issues. this is a huge safety issue and could case an accident cause you don't know when it is going to happen. *tr
We were almost hit at a street light. upon accelerating our car the engine died due the transmission or malfunction of the electric control module. we were lucky if the person behind had not slammed on brakes we would have been hit. also the car has problems with shifting while drive on freeway. we always now stay in the slow lane because we fear to pass,
I was driving along and came to a stop. when i started to go, my rav had no power, then it lurched and almost stopped. i had to nurse it-slowly accelerate-in order for it to move. every time i stopped and started it did this. once it made a noise like a hard shift from the rear of the car. i had to put my emergency flashers on to drive it safely, and drove to a transmission shop. in speaking with them, they said that toyota has a known recall on this situation! the computer locks up the transmission. they called toyota and gave them my vin, it has not been replaced. its going to cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000 to fix, depending on if the transmission is actually messed up or if it is the computer causing the problem. he has to pull the transmission to check it first. if it is the computer they said about $1000. who do i contact to get reimbursed for this recall? when i put my vin number in your site, it says there are no known recalls. the internet says differently. i need help! *tr
Recently the check engine dashboard light on our 2001 toyota rav4 came on. i took the vehicle to an auto parts store that offered a free diagnostic check; it indicated troubleshooting code p0770; the technician explained that the transmission tries to simultaneously shift into 2nd and 3rd gears due to faulty signals from the ecm (electronic control module) that regulates the transmission. this explanation seemed consistent with the cars behavior (not climbing even a small hill and having to restart it) and numerous accounts we've read online that suggest the ecm defect remedied for a while by a recall in 2007 and evidently a few years after that by a class action suit no longer in effect is still an ongoing problem. we towed the rav to our closest authorized toyota repair facility, then explicitly asked if they would check both the ecm and transmission. the service rep gave a $4200 transmission replacement estimate, but made no mention of the ecm module, even though i specifically asked about this. 1) toyota should extend their recall on the ecm modules indefinitely and pay for both ecm and transmission replacement, since this is a fundamental design defect and a significant safety issue. if the circuitry in the ecm were to malfunction at high speeds it might cause fatalities or serious injuries. 2) the specific toyota dealer should have included the ecm in their estimates and made greater efforts to work with toyota to remedy this specific situation and all affected vehicles in general, for the safety and welfare of their customers. it would appear that this dealerships service department intentionally diverted attention from the ecm defect and its liability to avoid the expense and complicity involved in what would seem to be a legitimate on-going safety issue. *tr
Ecm was replaced in 2007. no problems at that time. in may 2014 brakes plus misdiagnosed problem and fixed almost everything possible. check engine light never went on until the day before the problem. transmission started acting up and when i went to pass a person on a bicycle slipped into neutral. then it jumped back and forth like trying to go from one gear to another, with nothing happening. i could have been hit by a truck at this point, but avoided. took the rav back to brakes plus. they said it was the transmission. would cost $4500-5000 repair. they never even checked the diagnosis - which when we took to auto zone (which will read the problem as ecm). then towed the car to the dealer. they said the transmission is "smoke." called the toyota rep and only got a case number. of course the car is 13 years old and we have had it 12. it is at 175,000 miles. we can't put another $4,500 in this car. the ecm should not have gone out again. the check engine light should have gone on in may from what we assess considering the problems we experienced at that time. i would not advise anyone to purchase a 2001-2003 rav4. i am not sure i'd every purchase another toyota. it looks like toyota has stuck us with a nearly $5000 repair if we want a new trans. and we just put $2,700 into it in may. *tr
Vehicle accelerated by itself while driving at 45mph. i had to use both brakes to stop the car and experienced a harsh shift condition while trying to shift to park. dealership checked it out and stated that the ecm has been reprogrammed in 2007 and they were unable to duplicate anything at this time because no warning light came on during the incident even though i reminded them about the class action lawsuit for 2001-2003 model year rav4s. *tr
Sudden issue of erratic shifting and acceleration. the ecm was replaced. hopefully the transmission has been spared. i've researched online and uncovered many many similar complaints. i understand there was an extended warranty, however, i am still not covered as the car is over 10 years old. *tr
My 2001 toyota rav4 had the same problem that was covered in toyota's extended warranty and recall for this make and model. according to a july 10, 2010 article online at thecarconnection.com it is an issue with the automatic transmission and electronic control module. the issue, which affects around 235,500 vehicles, can lead to a damaged, rough-shifting transmission. while the rav4 for those model years was originally covered for five years or 60,000 miles on power train components, toyota is extending coverage to ten years or 150,000 miles. the auto maker is also offering to reimburse current or former owners for repairs already made. for me, the problem did not appear until near the very end of the coverage date. it was mis-diagnosed and when problem was finally identified, i was told it was outside the warranty window and toyota would not cover the repair. this issue is well known to toyota and widely documented. the consumer stated the vehicle was not picking up speed as quickly. updated 11/10/14
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated while driving various speeds on an icy and snow covered road, the transmission slipped gears without any warning. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. the technician informed that the electronic control module was faulty. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
Car had no spark when cranking, my mechanic checked and traced the problem to the car's main engine and transmission computer (ecm), i ordered a used ecm for the same vehicle, car started but transmission was shifting was very abnormal, shifting was harsh making a loud thump when put into drive or reverse and starting off on third gear. the damage on the transmission was already done so i went and ordered a transmission and a new ecm since i found out that all ecm's had been updated due to all ecm's being damaged from factory. a lawsuit took place back 2012 in the case that was entitled milligan v. toyota motor sales u.s.a in which toyota acknowledged that the problem existed toyota has ever since extended their warranty to 170,000 miles, even when they know the problem is there they still won't recall these vehicles for proper repairs. *tr
Traveling at 30 mph or less the vehicle will stumble. this is a road hazard as traveling through an intersection the vehicle could have an incident whereby the ensuing traffic could cause a crash.this is a manufacturer defect that involves the ecu(electronic control module) that is the computer which controls the transmission. the problem is verified by toyota as they extended the warranty for this vehicle for this problem that is 10 years or 150,000 miles. the vehicle age is beyond the 10 year limit. therefore,i wish to pursue a recall for this problem. thank you. *tr
Just purchased this vehicle in september of 2013 with only 95,000 miles. two days after purchase, the check engine light came on. dealer said it was the catalytic converter. so it was replaced at a cost of over $600. then two days later, the check engine light came back on. dealer said it was the o2 sensor, that bill was nearly $350. now for the icing on the cake. four days after that repair, i was pulling out of my driveway to go to work and the vehicle did not want to shift in to gear, lunged forward and i nearly ran over some children at a bus stop! the dealer said the issue is with the ecm and possibly the transmission. the ecm was replaced at nearly $1100 and the problem still exists! dealer said next step is to replace transmission. that cost is $5700 and i can't afford it. there are so many complaints about this vehicle for similar problems. why can't the government mandate that toyota has to stand behind this problem? children were nearly ran over because of this problem and toyota will not do a [xxx] thing about it. very sad. *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Was entering a limited access highway and wanted to merge onto highway. when i pressed down on gas pedal to speed up, the car hesitated, lurched forward, stopped, and then shifted harshly once again. i had thought i gave myself plenty of room to enter but because of the possible transmission problem, my car almost ended in a car wreck - an approaching car had to take drastic moves in order to avoid hitting my car. i then found out that toyota knew about this problem with their ecms ruining these cars transmissions - something i was not aware, nor notified about. when i called them up - their toyota customer service line, i found out they still had my old address from 2005! even though i've been going to my local toyota dealership for years and they had my latest data. toyota says they can do nothing to help with a possible $6,000 bill. my car is only worth about $8k if that. their negligence caused these problems, and almost caused a serious accident and human injury and/or death. *tr
I am newly employed with the post office so i need my car. i was out driving my route when all of a sudden it was lagging a little when i went to take off. then when i was able to get some speed between boxes it was like it slipped into neutral and then jerked really hard and kicked into gear, i took it to a mechanic and also the dealership. after i took it to the mechanic i found out that there was a bulletin put out in 2010 about the same exact issue, so i called the dealership and made an appointment. they told me the same thing the mechanic did and that my car wasn't covered under the bulletin because it was outside the 10 year or 150,000 mile range. i cannot afford to have to pay this out of pocket and i need my car. the estimate that i got was $1536 from toyota and then there is the possibility that i might have to have the transmission changed too. this is crazy especially seeing as toyota knows about the issue and notified some people but not all rav4 owners. i am out there driving my car and could pull out at the wrong time and get hit because of the fact that there is no pick up and go in this car anymore. i love my car and need my car. *tr
Ecm/transmission failure...called toyota..refused help..owned vehicle over 10 years...known defect that toyota has not addressed properly...need to replace ecm and transmission out of pocket because of their defective production. *tr
Ecm/transmission failure at 129000 miles. cant say much more than has already been said by so many others. out of pocket expense of about 3500.00. in the shop now but as i read these i'm wondering if i should be fixing it as it seems to reoccur. no help from toyota and they wanted over 5000.00 to fix it. received no notification from toyota. missed the warranty by 9000 miles. seems if you own one its just a matter of time and it will happen....stand behind your product toyota!!!!! *tr
I have a 2001 rav4 that in 2010 had a problem with the gear and the dealer change the reman transaxle assembly but know i can't drive the car because the car need a new transmission and some other part and the dealer would not fix it when the know that the car had all these problem when i bough the car for 28,000 dollars they were happy if these is the way that toyota get rich stealing from people that believe that they are buying a good product. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the vehicle shifted very hard and jerked. the contact also stated that the vehicle accelerated very slowly. in addition, the contact mentioned that the failure also occurred when accelerating from a complete stop. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and it was confirmed that there was an internal failure and that the transmission and transmission control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 82,045.
Harsh vehicle jerking with bad automatic shifting/acceleration. used emergency lights and narrowly avoided accident with badly performing vehicle. problem is diagnosed as failed ecm. *tr manufacturer is aware of this issue (toyota document t-sb-0156-10) but did not inform owners. ecm failure in my car caused a very dangerous driving situation. this could have been easily avoided by pro-actively replacing the factory installed ecm if i had been given the t-sb-0156-10 information. i was driving with my 2 and 4 year old daughters at the time. this part failure is a recurring problem for this car. please have toyota notify owners before this happens to them. thanks.
October 11, 2012. on or about october 8 2012 i began having hesitation and jumping into gear as i am driving my 2001 rav4. this happens mainly when accelerating from a stop sign/light. i am aware there has been a recall on many 2001 rav4 vehicles. i bought my rav4 from carmax in north attleboro mass on april 19 2012. so, i have not even had my vehicle for 5 months yet. on thursday october 11 2012 i took my rav4 back to carmax in attleboro with my complaint--i will be leaving the vehicle with them on friday october 12 2012 so they can diagnose the transmission and the tcm (the transmission module which has had the recall). if it is found that my rav4 is one of many under this recall, i will hope that toyota will honor its' commitment and fix my rav. i do hope that lodging this complaint with you will help me in this plight, as i do not have the money to fix this problem and nor should i have to as to the above, and due to the fact that is was a recall with toyota. thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the transmission was exhibiting behaviors of a manual transmission when it was an automatic. the engine rpms would increase excessively before shifting and then the transmission would fail. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was told that the engine control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 200,000.
Apparently there was a tsb issued on this and a customer care ticket issued and a recall but being as my car is 11 years old and 137,000 it falls outside of the parameters toyota set of 10 years or 150,000 miles toyota will not fix this problem that will cost upwards of $4000!! i cannot understand how a problem that they acknowledge will happen has happened and they don't want to fix it. i don't know what else to do. *tr
When attempting to accelerate from a stop, the car stalls. automatic transmission does not hold on to a gear and when a gear is finally engaged, the car jerks violently forward. this is extremely frightening; i thought i was going to be hit because i stall in dangerous situations. trying to enter a fast paced road is highly risking the chance of being read ended, and at times i would attempt to accelerate from a stop light only to crawl into the intersection and sit in horror. sometimes higher gear would judder the car. apparently toyota knows the ecm is faulty and damages the transmission, but the actions they took on this matter were too late and barely caring. i was not notified of the danger. i had to come into the dealership to learn and by then my car is already out of warranty and my car is in no working order. no proper steps were taken to warn drivers of this hazard. the warranty they provide is incapable and restrictive of addressing the faulty ecm that will inevitably put unwary drivers in danger. i am still trying to learn more about this matter but toyota representatives insist i pay out of pocket for a defect that would have been solved by a recall years ago. *tr
The transmission suddenly began slipping and jerking when accelerating from a stop or while in low gear and shifting from a low speed. i became aware of the ecm problem known to occur in my make and model of toyota upon calling the dealership; however, i am being told that the warranty only covers ten years from the date of purchase (i purchased my car 11 years ago) despite the fact it is known that the ecm, the computer that controls the transmission, is defective and causes transmission problems. this is a dangerous problem as the car will not accelerate and the transmission slips. it is difficult to understand how toyota cannot ethically cover this knowing it is defective and is probable to cause owners problems in the future, regardless if it's 8, 10, or 12 years down the line. *tr

My vehicle was experiencing harsh shifting and hard engagement. i took it to the dealer today and was told the ecm needed to be replaced. i did some internet research and discovered toyota received thousands of complaints regarding this issue as far back as 2006 in the 2001-2003 models. they extended the warranty to 10 years and 150, 000 miles. however, my vehicle is 6 months beyond the date (only 103,000 miles). i contacted toyota and they will not pay for any repairs. in addition, i discovered that owners had issues with the replaced emc unit within 2 years-causing transmission failure or repeated ecm failure. i questioned toyota as to why this was not a recall issue. they couldn't tell me. if it had been a recall issue, toyota would be responsible for the repair and not me. in addition, how do i know that once i have my car repaired today, that i won't have the same issue or worse in 2 years--like many other customers? toyota should be required to make this a recall issue--especially since there are thousands of people with this issue. *tr
Failed to speed up when i was merging into traffic. *tr
Transmission slippage/failure did not allow me to accelerate to highway speeds on an on-ramp. *tr
Automatic transmission sometimes hesitates when shifting and sometimes starts in 3rd gear instead of 1st. check engine light came on a week ago, similar to when shifting problems began. *kb
I have a 2011 rav 4 with 151,000 miles on it. i had my transmission fluid flushed when i got my oil changed in early june of 2011. my transmission starting "jumping" in early august of 2011 when in almost any gear. the problem came on very suddenly with no warning signs. the day it happened, i called my local toyota dealership who has done all of my servicing and asked if it could have possibly had to do with the flushing of the system two months prior and if there had been any recalls on my vehicle for this sort of problem. they said that it was unlikely to have anything to do with the flushing and no, there had been no recalls that they were aware of. i was referred over to a transmission shop that rebuilds transmissions and got it into the shop that very next morning. the shop rebuilt my transmission and charged me over $3000 to do so. when i picked my vehicle up and drove it, it jumped when only driven half of a block. the transmission shop owner suggested i drive it a little bit more and take it from zero to 60 mph on the interstate. i did so but two days later, my transmission failed to accelerate when i pulled out into traffic, which was extremely frightening seeing that i am five months pregnant, and it also began to jump again, in almost any gear after it finally accelerated. i took it back to the transmission shop and after three days, they determined that it must be the ecm. they replaced this for me and charged me another $600 to do so. once again, when i picked my vehicle up and drove it, it jumped when only driven half a block. i am beyond broke and frustrated that a) toyota sent out no notifications to owners of this year and model warning owners of the potential dangers associated with a failed ecm and b) that even with a new ecm and rebuilt transmission, that my transmission is still not operating as it should. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the electronic control module malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to stall in the middle of the road. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where a diagnostic test was performed and the dealer stated that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. the contact also stated that the faulty transmission was a known issue with this year, make and model. the failure mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the accelerator pedal failed to respond and a loud popping noise was heard. after numerous attempts, the vehicle began to operate normally and was driven to the side of the road. the identical failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and they stated that the computer module and transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle remained at the dealer for repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000. ..updated 09/19/11 *bf there consumer stated there was an ongoing harsh shift. at times, the transmission had an ongoing sluggish/slip. according to the service invoice from the dealer, the transmission had an internal wear and tear malfunction. the fluid was very dirty. the dealer recommended a transmission replacement. updated 12/30/11
I noticed vehicle was not accelerating or going into proper gear. i was alarmed when i couldn't pick up speed turning left. engine light lit when i got home. i spoke to toyota today about the known ecu issue with 2001-2003 rav4s. my car was serviced in 2007 when there was a recall but they will not address the issue now since the warranty expired. i am very disappointed with toyota not addressing the ecu/ecm issue to a satisfactory manner. this is a safety issue that toyota should show more concern over. *kb
Started having problems with my 2001 toyota rav4. it seems to happen mostly after i have come to complete stop and try to accelerate. it will start to move and then automatic transmission will not shift and it stops accelerating. i have almost been hit from behind several times. also check engine light has been on for two years. dealership told me it was due to needing new catalytic converter, which i found out later had already been replaced once in 2005. after searching for info online i found out about safety recall for the engine control module (ecm), this has been replaced, and engine light is now off, but transmission is bad. and toyota is not taking any responsibility for ruined transmission. *tr
The transmission will not accelerate and then something suddenly "kicks in" and the truck will go- nearly been rear-ended numerous times- this is a big safety issue- told it's going to be a $4,000 transmission replacement- only 102k miles, like new. also, at traffic lights, won't accelerate and people get ticked and need to pass and can't- numerous online complaints- add this. unacceptable for toyota. *kb
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. while the contact was driving 35 mph, the engine warning light illuminated, and the transmission began to exhibit severe hesitation in a jerking motion. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and confirmed that the transmission, ecm module and a faulty trans axle needed to be replaced. the contact discovered there was a prior voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer pertaining to the ecm module; however, the contact did not receive notification of the recall. the manufacturer stated that the recall expired in january 2011 and they were unable to provide further assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 136,000.
My 18 year old has a 2001 rave 4 the mechanic says that the ecu has trashed the transmission so now she needs both to be replaced. i have found many complaints on line about this problem and most likely not many people know to contact this agency or this would have been addressed by now. please refer to the toyota service bulletin march 3, 2006. toyota is aware of the issue! this problem has the potential to cause an accident due to lose of power or stalling of the vehicle. my daughter has been very fortunate not to be in an accident due to this ecu /transmission problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 toyota rav4. the contact stated while driving 35 mph his automatic transmission failed. the transmission had also previously malfunctioned. the vehicle will be taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 85,000.
