The Toyota RAV4's throttle valve is an element responsible for feeding air into those combustion chambers of the engine, making sure that fuel-air mixture is just right. Hit that gas pedal, and the throttle opens up, welcoming more fuel into the cylinders. The way that throttle valve acts is all about that mix of air and fuel.
Now, during this throttle’s lifetime, it's gonna collect some dirt and dust – the kind that gets in there with the air.

And soon enough, this junk starts sticking to the body, messing with the way things should work. If that throttle gets real dirty, the RAV4’s gonna let you know. Here are the signs of a throttle body in need of a good scrub:
If these symptoms are all adding up and it’s been a while since your last cleaning, might be about time to do it again.
You won’t need anything fancy, just what’s probably lying around your garage.
Here’s the lineup:
Give that throttle valve a good clean every 75,000 miles (121,000 km) or so. Ain’t no hard rules, but a little TLC keeps your RAV4 purring. Start noticing anything strange? Could be cleaning time.
There's more than one road to take when cleaning this throttle valve. You can do it with or without yanking that unit out of the RAV4.
This way I'm showing you might save you a little sweat, but if it's looking real nasty, you might wanna take it all apart and clean every last piece.

First off, disconnect that negative terminal from the battery. It's a must-do to shut off the power to your Toyota RAV4 and keep any nasty shocks at bay.
Now, disconnect the air supply hose that runs from the air filter to the throttle. It might be clamped on, or they might've used something else – just make sure you detach it before pulling it off.

You'll find various wires and pipes hooked up to the throttle valve, with sensors and coolant flowing through 'em. Be careful when you disconnect those pipes, and keep 'em upright. Plug 'em with a spark plug to keep any spills from happening.
Once you're done cleaning the throttle on that RAV4, everything's gotta go back where it came from. You don't wanna mix up all those wires, so make sure you label and mark everything you disconnect. It'll make putting things back together a whole lot easier.
Time for a little magic with the throttle cleaner. Spray it on and let it work for a few minutes. If there's some real tough grime, give it 3-5 minutes to do its thing.
Grab a brush (easy now, nothing too stiff), rag, or cotton swab, and get to cleaning that throttle. If the grime's giving you a hard time, just repeat the process until it's shining like new.
Once you've got that throttle body all cleaned up, it's time to put everything back in its place. Double-check your work to make sure there's no strange noises or any other signs something's off. And just like that, your RAV4's throttle body is good as new!
If you've got one of those newer Toyota RAV4s with an electronic throttle (yeah, that's right, it's actuated by an electronic pulse, not a cable), there's a fancy throttle position sensor that's keepin' track of where that throttle blade's at. Before you even start the engine, that blade's sittin' pretty at a 90-degree angle.
It snugly fits against the walls up top and down below, making sure no extra air sneaks in. But here's the thing, over time, dirt's gonna start building up on the walls or on the blade itself. That dirt keeps the throttle from closing all the way, and it gets stuck.
The sensor reads this stuck position, and the Toyota RAV4's computer "thinks" this is the new normal.
In other words, the throttle blade's neutral position becomes its reference point, even with that dirt layer. It's normal, it's how it's made, and it's all to keep the engine running smooth.

But, if you go ahead and clean all that dirt off the throttle body and get it looking like new, the RAV4's computer might not get it.
It's got no way of knowing that nothing's stopping the throttle blade from closing all the way. It'll still "think" there's dirt there and keep the blade where it remembered it. This ends up creating a gap, allowing air to pass through, and that's a problem.
So, the Toyota's computer will "think" the throttle pedal's being pushed when it ain't, letting more air into the cylinders through that new gap.
And that, my friend, ain't good for the engine. It'll feel the strain, especially at idle, when instead of cruising at 800 rpm, it's rearing up to 1500–2000 rpm. That's a one-way ticket to overheating and wear and tear.
So, after giving that throttle valve a good cleaning, you'll want to recalibrate that blade to where it should be.
The procedure for adapting that throttle valve? It's pretty much the same for many Toyota RAV4 models.
Just warm up the engine to the right temperature, shut it off, and wait a few seconds. Turn the ignition on, wait another few ticks, then press that throttle pedal 5 times for 5 seconds and let go.
If that doesn't get it done, check your RAV4's owner's manual. It'll tell you how your system's programmed.
Look, taking care of your RAV4's throttle body is no joke. It keeps that blade clean and gap-free.
But hey, patience and a steady hand are key. Do it right, and you'll have that Toyota RAV4 purring like a kitten. Happy driving!
