Car purchased new and serviced at toyota dealership every 10,000 miles using 0-20w synthetic oil. at around 106,000 miles i noticed the display flashing something but could not, at that time, read what the warning was. it seemed to happen going around curves, turning etc. finally, at maybe 107,000 miles, the warning stayed on long enough to see the low oil warning. took the car in at 108,000 (no oil on dipstick at that point) and the service department checked for leaks and found none. i was lightly admonished by service for driving without oil. fair enough, i thought at the time. i was slightly chagrined as i have always religiously had my oil changed (or changed it myself) on all my cars at the recommended intervals with no signs of a problem. the toyota service department recommended that i monitor oil usage. i did, and to my surprise 2,500 hundred miles later, i had to add a full quart. then 1950 miles later, another quart. yesterday, another quart at 1048 miles. very disappointed as the car has been without problems until now. have not discussed this with the dealership, but am not encouraged by the tenor of comments posted here regarding toyota stepping up and accepting responsibility. i see no need, at this point, to pay to have an oil consumption test done by the dealership as the car is obviously using an excessive amount of oil.
I just tested all years from 2010 to 2011 prius, those prius burns a lot of oil at every 2,000 miles. i did fill it (at 4.4 quarts of oil) correctly it but prius ate over 3 quarts in 2000 miles. like many of people have been reports this on priuschat.com and etc online forums. i hate to spend my money to buy motor oils! why this prius excessive oil consumption? "what did this happen?" i just purchased 2010 prius on oct. 2016. and i tested it. it still oil consumption. toyota dealer can't do anything for motor oil. since it happened, i still check oil level at every 2,000 miles and put it some motor oil in it until it reach to 5,000 miles for synthetic oil change.
Excessive oil consumption. this problem is identical to the hundreds i have read on the exact same vehicle. it is already well documented by owners.
Excessive oil consumption. the car is consuming 1 quart of oil every 1,200 miles and has failed an oil consumption test performed by the dealer.
Over the past three weeks i have noticed the check major system light flickering when turning to the left or right or coming to a sudden stop. i took my car in for the 80,000 mile check and told the service technician what i had seen. he told me he could tell me what the issue was without looking at the car. he said the car was burning excessive oil, the issue has been reported to toyota and he would file a case with them for me. he also told me the cost was about $3000 to fix the problem, that i may or may not hear back from toyota about this. when they finished servicing my car the technician told me they had added extra oil to top it off. this is the first toyota i have owned. i bought it new and have never had an issue with it. i have taken it in for every maintenance check. i was disappointed that toyota knows about this issue and has done nothing to notify owners of the issue.
Toyota refuses to provide any documentation or tsb explaining why 2010- 4 cyl. (2zrfxe) sc20hr11 90919-01253 was superseded by sc16hr11 90919-01275 spark plug
My toyota prius has not been identified as one of the models in this class action law suit, but approximately four months ago, at 110,000 miles, my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, causing me to have to fill it every 1,200 miles. i take it in for maintenance to the same person at the same dealership since i have owned the car new. i was notified of this problem with the piston rings with the other toyota models and that some of the prius models have also had this issue. this has me very concerned that other owners have been left out of this suit. considering there are millions of prius owners that have stood behind toyota and the prius as the top hybrid on the market, there needs to be something done about this. toyota oil consumption defect class action lawsuit is april lax, et al. v. toyota motor corporation, et al., case no. 14-cv-01490, in the u.s. district court for the northern district of california.
I have had our pruis for a while now and i loved the car. now the car is a nightmare and a danger. the engine is burning oil at an alarming rate and couldn't figure out why. we are having to put oil in it every couple of days . it did stall once, so i checked everything i could and then noticed there was hardly any oil on dip stick after change oil a couple of days before. the dealership doesn't tell you anything about the hazardous or recalls for the car. they just tell you to get another oil change. its recommended every 3,000-5,000 miles but every 1,000 miles is ridiculous plus extremely expensive if you add it up. we cant afford to have the engine rebuilt either. toyota needs to do something about this problem. i cant believe they know of the problem and don't care about their customers' safety. i also read some other complaints and issues with the oil burning off causing harmful gases. my wife was back and forth to the doctor for throat issues. i believe it was the car all long, hundreds in doctor bills for their lack of humanity. so here we go again, another visit to the dealership. i want this problem fixed by toyota. we might have to take legal action.
In 2016 about the 130,000+ mile mark on my vehicle, i started complaining about my car consuming oil. the dealer findlay toyota assured me that it had to do with the heat and was normal. i was lead to believe the paper i signed after the work was complete has to do with the maintenance being done, no one mentioned it meant all my concerns were acknowledged. the days continued and even in during colder months of the year of 2016, i again notified the dealership of my car eating oil and it was nowhere to be found. again i complained and it was not annotated or written anywhere in their files. it was not until 26,000 miles plus more that they finally acknowledged my issue and took their time to search for the cause. in the month of march 2017, one individual from toyota actually took his time and did a full check, instead of the usual its hot here and that eats your oil excuse, he give me an answer which lead to me having concerns about toyota dealerships, he said the pistons had a leak and it was burning up my oil. i called toyota and found out my car had a recall for this issue but here is the catch, my car would have to be under 150,000 miles, which it was under when i started to first complain. now that i am over that mileage and was never notified, great dealerships tell you when you take your car for any maintenance about recalls, they say it sup to me to fix this issue they knew these cars have. since they never wrote down any of my complains, there is no proof of me complaining. this car burns oil moving or sitting as long as the pistons are moving. where has the honesty and professionalism of findlay toyota. what is my next step i ask the reader?
2010 toyota prius suddenly lost power while driving at speed. my wife was able to pull over, and after a few minutes the car again appeared to be operating normally. this has now happened twice while driving on an interstate. after the first occurrence the toyota dealership said they could find no computer codes that indicated any problem. now it's six months later, and the same thing happened again.
Used 2 qts of oil for every 1500 miles. there are no leaking of oil found under engine
Oil warning system came on 4-20-16. oil change not due for another 1000 miles. garage changed oil at 95188 miles. less than 4 months later on aug. 9,2016, oil warning system came on. i watched as 3 quarts of oil were added at mileage 99712, 4524 miles later. prius is using 1 quart of oil for every 1500 miles.
Excess oil consumption at 93,000 miles. the toyota dealer has told me that it will cost $13,000 to replace the engine and that is my only option.
Car is burning excessive amounts of oil. dealer told me (over phone) that triangle was from taking corners too fast (dealer has since said this was inaccurate info). oil change for life (every 10k miles) at dealer and no one has ever notified me that car is using oil. 6,000 miles after last oil change, over 3 1/2 quarts of oil used. i nearly locked up the engine. car is not leaking oil. car sometimes smells of oil after starting. toyota has extended warranty for certain models for this same problem, but not for prius. my car has 117,000 miles and this problem has been going on for at least the last 25,000 miles (based upon orange warning triangle). according to dealer, problem is with rings (which is the recall for other toyota cars). also, according to dealer, this is a real problem for other prius owners with 100,000+ miles. i consider this very dangerous to safe operation of vehicle and fumes from burnt oil.
Excessive oil consumption starting at 100,000 which worsened. i now have to put a quart of oil every 750-1000 miles in my 2010 prius. no one at toyota will admit this is a problem, albeit there are an extreme amount of these complaints online through different blogs and web sites. really, we toyota owners bought this car to decrease our carbon footprint...ironic, right?
I along with an alarming amount of others have experienced the 2010 prius begin to burn oil at an alarmingly high rate around 60-80k miles. this is accompanied with an emission into the cabin of noxious fumes during high oil burn rate (heavier acceleration) moments. we have all been told by the dealerships that this is "normal". this has led to burning over a quart of oil every 1000 miles, headaches from the fumes, and now i have found out there is substantial soot buildup in the engine resulting from the oil burning requiring very costly repairs. toyota refuses to do anything to help or even acknowledge the costly issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. each time the vehicle was driven, it shook, stalled, and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. in addition, the contact had to depress the brake pedal with excessive pressure for the brake lights to illuminate. also, the horn failed to function. the vehicle was taken to south bay toyota (located at 18416 s western ave, gardena, ca 90248, (310) 323-7800), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was later taken to autonation toyota cerritos (located at 18700 studebaker rd, cerritos, ca 90703, (562) 802-4000), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the repair fees. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Check hybrid system car shuts off and can not restart, tried system reset per manual but would not clear hybrid. towed to dealer, dtc code p3004-800, tech said this was the only code, had recall eoe reflash 04-14-2014 ipm extended 15 years. car was in motion per wife. (it had been raining) the dtc p3004-800 power cable malfunction
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle stalled. the check engine and general warning lights illuminated. the contact coasted over to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the water pump failed and needed to be replaced. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 12v536000 (engine and engine cooling, hybrid propulsion system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
Burning oil issue. front head light short circuit or burned out. leather seat separated twice.
My prius is burning an excessive amount of oil. more than a quart every 1000 miles.
2010 toyota prius, 84,000 miles: experienced loss of oil, took to dealer who topped off and asked me to return. returned at 85,790 miles after further loss of oil (down two quarts). the toyota mechanic had to call toyota, who stated they knew of the problem. the pcv sticks open, resulting in oil being sprayed where it doesn't belong. repair, which includes replacement of several parts, estimated at $629.00. the toyota service tech was not confident the repair would not be needed again, and blamed use of ethanol in gasoline as the culprit. however, ethanol has been in use since well before this model was released on the market. toyota knows it has a problem, but has not issued a recall.
Resolution to excessive oil use: switch from factory recommended 0w-20 full synthetic to mobile 1 high mileage 5w-30 full synthetic.
My car is consuming about 1 quart of oil every thousand miles, sometimes even more. i have always got the oil replaced in a very timely manner and with only around 118,000 miles on it, this is very troubling. my dealership is aware of this problem and they have charged me upwards of $4,000 to replace the head gasket and the oil pan gasket saying it would solve the problem, which it didn't. they did the oil compression check with no sign of where the oil was going as there were no additional leaks according to them. they refuse to think this is a problem, which i think is a blatant lie. they know that this shouldn't be the case and want me to get the engine rebuilt for an additional $4,500, which is ridiculous for a car with such low mileage. i want toyota to fix this problem now. i am very concerned about my safety as i have to constantly keep adding oil, which is wrong!
At 92,000 miles my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, i made multiple trips to the dealership, they did multiple tesst and continued to maintain(per toyota corporate) that i was within toyota guidelines. this causes me to fill oil every 400-600 miles to be safe and i have found it completely devoid of oil many times.i understand from the dealership that some of the prius models have also had this issue and have been showing up at the dealership but the company has refused to correct the problem. this has me concerned - there needs to be something done about this excessive oil consumption as my engine could completely cease at any time causing a massive safety hazard. i have all the records and formal complaint to toyota on file. i have tried to work with them in good faith until now.
Excessive oil consumption, 2-3 qt per 5000 miles.
Excessive use of oil began at 80,000 miles. dealership said that it was normal for my model and if i kept an eye on it and kept oil in it everything would be ok. i do not get a warning light. one time i had to put over 3 quarts into it--no warning. i now check it every 800 miles and must put a quart of oil in about every 1000 miles.
Waiting for reply from toyota: increased oil consumption past 100k miles normal for a 2010 toyota prius at 1 quart per 2000 miles? oil soot wiped from exhaust pipe. yellow low oil warning light and beep sounds when making hard turns. on june 1, 2015 at 101131 miles, oil level was down 2 quarts and requested an oil change and filter from dealer. about 2000 miles later on june 26, 2015 at 103300 miles, 1 quart of 5-30 sae mobile 1 full synthetic oil for high mileage cars was added to top off.
Vehicle suddenly has excessive oil consumption at around 110000. serviced at dealer since new, no leaks. need to add oil every 1k miles. when service light came on, dipstick was dry.
The engine is burning oil at an alarming rate: over a quart in less than 1200 miles. the problem began before the odometer turned 100,000 miles.
I was driving approximately 35 mph and all of a sudden the car stalled and stated, "check hybrid system". stopped the car right away called my insurance company for emergency road service and had the car towed to a toyota facility where they diagnosed the problem as a failed inverter, which is part of the hybrid system. this is a safety issue and must be addressed. if i had been on a freeway or in heavy traffic, i could see this being a very dangerous scenario. *tr
On march 4th 2015 at 8:00 am, my wife was trying to change a parking spot into another about 50 feet away in the same church parking lot. she started the engine and the car was put on drive. within a fraction of a second, the car accelerated beyond control. she could not steer or stop the car. the car jumped a curb, hit a light pool and landed on a grassy area. tire marks reveal that the car experienced a sudden rush of acceleration beyond control 'unintended acceleration.' my wife is still under doctor's observation. the car front right; bumper, tire, fender, door, "a" pillar, and other parts were damaged. the car was towed to daytona toyota and is still there since march 4th 2015. on march 6th 2015 a report was electronically filed with toyota motor sales, u.s.a., inc. on march 20th 2015, a "cdr" crash data retrieval was taken. the car has not been repaired. even if the car is repairable, i would hesitate to drive it, let my wife drive it or with clear conscious sell it to any other human being. please help us to mitigate the situation. *tr
Burning oil 1 quart every 1000 miles. oil consumption. piston issue. requires piston rings replacement. smell burning oil in air vents. cost of repair at $7,000 per toyota. toyota says oil consumption within normal limits. this is wrong. request toyota to repair vehicle and toyota to pay for repairs.
on february 27, 2015, our house burned in the middle of the night while we were asleep. the fire started in the near vicinity of the right front headlight of the 2010 toyota prius. the car had been serviced just before the fire on february 25, 2015 at the local toyota dealership. the car was off at the time and the key was not in the car at the time of the fire. while we were sleeping, the car evidently caught fire spontaneously at approximately 2 a.m. while it was parked in the garage. the garage door was closed. by the time we woke up, the garage was fully engulfed in flames. we were able to escape the fire. however, our house was too severely damaged (fire, smoke and water) after the fire to be livable, and it is currently being rebuilt. our family of four (husband, wife and two children, 15 and almost 11 years old) is currently living in a rental house. we lost all three of our cars (the other cars were a dodge durango and a honda accord) and a majority of our possessions. damages are estimated to be likely in excess of $500,000 including house, cars, damage to landscaping, personal property, furniture, clothing, etc. our homeowner's insurance is seeking a subrogation claim against toyota for the expenses incurred regarding our claim. the prius is scheduled to have a deconstructive exam soon with multiple parties present and is currently being held as evidence.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 45 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to be pulled over. the vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operation. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000.
Motor consumes excess oil. must add several quarts in between scheduled oil changes. occasionally when first started, the motor will stall or sputter.
Vehicle was being driven when a smell of smoke was detected. upon stopping, smoke came from the engine compartment. within 3 minutes the vehicle started on fire, extending to the roll up garage door. the fire burned the engine compartment, passenger area, garage door and siding before the fire department extinguished. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the vehicle was burning oil excessively and the service vehicle warning indicator was illuminated. there was also an abnormal rattling noise when idling. the vehicle was taken to labadie toyota (located at 909 n euclid ave bay city, mi 48706) where it was diagnosed that the piston rings needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 1707100976, but did not offer assistance. the failure mileage was 296,000.
About a mile after having entered the freeway as i was merging towards the carpool lane the car shut off in the number three lane.the dashboard displayed the message, "check hybrid system", and would not respond. my speed was approximately 65 mph when this occurred. i immediately pressed on the brake but the car was not slowing down as it normally does. when i finally got over to the number 1 lane, i entered the emergency lane but was still having trouble coming to a stop. i brushed up against the freeway wall in order to come to a complete stop. after switching the car off and attempting to restart it, i would get no respond and all the dashboard indicators would remain on with the "check hybrid system" displayed. this incident was terrifying as i was driving with my two year old daughter and two other occupants. the car should have displayed a warning and not simply stalled out. if this incident had taken place a few minutes later, i would have been in the hov lane and could have resulted in a devastating accident. *tr
The hybrid inverter assembly failed when i tried to accelerate from a stop onto a rural highway. this occurred approximately two months after receiving the motor generator ecu and power management ecu software update that was intended to prevent this type of failure.i was notified of this update/recall in late march 2014 and had the update completed at a authorized toyota service center. *tr
Was traveling about 65 mph on route 11 in ct when red lights come on and car slows to 20 mph.pulle to side of road and called aaa/towed to hartford toyota in hartford ct. first told it was a hybrid battery then told it was the inverter which they said is on back order. now i,m getting the run around from the main office in california.. brought car in for a recall on software update in feb 2014 and from what i read this may cause the invert to fail thanks for your attention in this matter. *tr
Two occurrences. was driving 65 mph when suddenly car began to lose power. was unable to regain any power but was able to coast to stop on shoulder. pressed the on/off button to off. waited a few seconds and pushed it on. was then able to drive again. however about 3 miles later at 25 mph the same thing happened. both situations occurred during a turn with an uphill grade. first time the grade change was v.gradual the second time much more abrupt. no such problems the previous year we have owned the car. dealer said no codes were found during a scan. *tr
2010 prius 2. multiple occasions of complete loss of engine power and stalling at various speeds. coasted to the side of the road and restarted/rebooted car. all interior lights stayed on but the engine was off. dealer could not replicate the problem and could find no faults. *tr
I am writing due to having had my 2010 toyota prius self accelerate while driving on four occasions. this began occurring after i took my vehicle to toyota of clermont, florida for a routine service on 3/31/2014. while the vehicle was there, the dealership also performed a recall on the vehicle. this recall is referenced as: tech(s) : 20799 recall eoe motor generator and power management update perform software update for mg ecu and power management ecu agg09a 0.7 as of 8/5/2014 my vehicle has had unintended acceleration on 4 occasions. in 3 of the 4 i know it has occurred as i released the brake. this release is confirmed by the fact that it is necessary to reapply the brake to stop the acceleration. the 4th occurrence may also have occurred after a brake release. i have attempted to resolve this problem via both my local toyota dealer and toyota customer experience center at 1 800 331-4331. i am being told the problem is operator error. i have done the research to see if this is even possible. for me to apply the brake and fuel simultaneously would be both extremely difficult and very obvious. additionally if this diagnosis were correct the vehicle would stop accelerating when the brake was released. in fact the vehicle accelerates when the brake is released not while the brake is depressed. *tr
Serious oil consumption. took it to three different toyota dealerships and they all have said the oil consumption is within normal limits. have to add oil every1000 miles. i never had to add oil to a car and this my third toyota. the third dealership even told me to trade it in and get a new one. i have seen others complain about this on carcomplaints.com. toyota should pay to repair the positions/engine.
On monday february 24th 2014 my 2010 toyota prius, hybrid inverter failed while i was driving and my car suddenly stopped on the road. i looked on the instrument panel and the check hybrid system was illuminated. the car would not start. i decided to call a toll truck company to take me to the nearest toyota dealer. once i arrived the service advisor informed me, the 2010 toyota prius has two active safety recalls. i was never notified. the two safety recalls are the hybrid inverter & brake booster pump assembly. today is thursday february 27th 2014 and the toyota dealer has failed to repair and return my car. the toyota dealer stated this is a safety recall, they need permission from toyota headquarters to approve parts. i pleaded with the toyota dealer to provide me with a vehicle, while i wait, they refused. *tr
Driving the car at 40 mph went it suddenly stopped. was able to coast to the side of the road. found out today that the water pump caused the inverter to become non-working which caused the engine to shut down. very dangerous. lucky i was not on the interstate. *tr
I was driving 15 mph and all of a sudden the car stalled and stated, "check hybrid system". stopped the care right away called aaa and took it to a toyota facility where they diagnosed the problem as a failed inverter, which is part of the hybrid system. this is a safety issue and must be addressed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, the engine stalled without warning. upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally but the failure later recurred. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where the volt battery was replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 49,312. ..updated 10/30/13 *bf updated 10/31/13*lj the consumer stated the dealership did not put the engine guard on the vehicle properly, the engine cover detached, the tires went flat frequently, lights needed to be replaced, and the battery completely powered off. a separate dealership informed the consumer that the vehicle was defective. the consumer stated that the second time the vehicle shut down was at 60 mph the vehicle powered off 10 within 10 minutes on the same day during rush hour. updated 11/4/2013 *js the consumer stated the vehicle powered off twice while driving on the highway. the first time it happened, she was driving 15 mph and the second time it happened she was driving 60 mph and she lost power all together.
Driving on the highway in albany, ny area, slowed down to go through tollbooth as i began to accelerate to continue on highway, check hybrid light came on and engine abruptly stopped. i was able to coast the car from left lane over to the breakdown lane. turned off car and was unable to restart. toyota dealership found that the power inverter had failed and needed to be replaced. error codes listed by dealer: p0a94 dc/dc converter performance. *tr
