As i was driving 55-65 mph on the highway, the check hybrid system alert came on, and all of a sudden i lost power. i was able to make it home but going up hill it would not go faster than 35 mph, and 40-50 mph on flat ground. this happened on a busy highway where the average speed is 55-65 mph
When driving at higher speeds than 40 mph, my check engine light, and check my hybrid system light is turned on. when it turned on, i was unable to accelerate, however i was able to pull over, and restart my car. i have recently come in to get a software update for the factory recall related to the issue. however my inverter has been damaged as well. on this website it states if my inverter is damaged related to the recall, it will be repaired free of charge. however the toyota dealership charged me for diagnostic, and requested payment for the replacement of my inverter. i also have given toyota a call as well, they have stated that the recall only will consist of a software update. i was unable to get anyone from toyota to help me with my repair of my inverter thus far.
Exsesive oil consumption. need to add oil ( 2 quarts or more) between oil changes
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while operating the vehicle, the 'check hybrid system' warning indicator displayed and the vehicle stalled. moments later, the vehicle restarted, but the warning indicator remained illuminated. the failure occurred on multiple occasions. the cause of the failure was not determined. fred anderson toyota (9101 glenwood ave, raliegh, nc) was notified. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 207,000.
Driving with cruse control set at 72 mph, driving on 4 lane interstate. master warning light came on along with the following warnings "check hybrid system" & "check pcs system", all dash lights lit up. engine stalled unexpectedly and resulted in no power when pushing gas pedal. steering was not compromised. was able to cross 3 lanes on the interstate to the shoulder with no power and the car decelerating rapidly, again with no prior warning of any issues. turned car off and restarted, was able to drive approx. 25 feet before the engine shut off unexpectedly again leading to a complete loss of power. breaking and steering were affected after restarting the car.
My car got stall on the road, it had a problem related with the hybred system. i took it to the toyota dealer and they said it was in a recall list. so they fixed but they damaged the suspension of my car and now they don't want to fix it. my car is making a noise when i move the steering wheel and also when i brake. my car wasn't making such noise before the stall on the road. i am frustrated with all this problems in my car.
Took prius in for coil replacement and was told the cooling fan was failing and there was a leak from the water pump. coolant level was not to the low point at anytime and was checked and refilled if not full, the temp warning has not come on. i am now being told that a head gasket is blown and that i need a new engine. the car is not even at 200k and has had all routine maintence and recalls completed.
While the vehicle was in motion, the engine started shaking, the steering and brakes locked up and the engine ceased up as the car shut off. got error code p3190 for poor engine power, and then a day later everything was normal. this is the 2nd time this has happened while driving, the first time was in a 2002 prius.
Had to replace my head gasket
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact's spouse was able to pull the vehicle over safely. the contact's spouse turned the off and restarted the engine, and was able to drive home. all the warning indicators were illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to penske toyota of covina (1800 e garvey ave s, west covina, ca 91791, (626) 859-7400) to be repaired. the cause of the failure was not disclosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 27,000.
I have been experiencing the safety risks outlined in the following manufacturer recall number: j1v nhtsa recall number: 18v684 i have been dealing with this issue for the past 2 - 3 years and unknowingly may have been spending hundreds of dollars on repairs that may not have needed to be replaced. currently, my car is not running as i experienced a stall (11/09/2018) while exiting the freeway at a high speed with the screen reading "check hybrid system" and the dash lit up with the yellow triangle and exclamation point. i am not able to accelerate during the stall, brakes are working. this has happened to me countless times, almost always on the freeway or exiting and while traveling at a high speed. sometimes the vehicle would start back up after a few minutes of being turned off. this particular time (11/09/2018), i coasted the vehicle to a safe spot and the vehicle engine never turned on again. i towed the vehicle to my residence and then to my mechanic. i am only able to put the vehicle in neutral. the motor will not come on at all and the screen reads "check hybrid system". the car had over 1/4 tank of gas at the time. i currently use my vehicle for my livelihood doing independent delivery services such as instacart, doordash, postmates etc. since there is yet to be a remedy for this situation i want to know what my options are to get back the money i've spent or compensation for this vehicle since it is not usable and unable to be fixed by the manufacturer in a timely manner. i can provide documentation in regards to repairs made as well as visits to toyota in which they were unaware of the issue.
I have a 2010 toyota prius, it overheated and the red light or the warning temperature light never turned on, so now i the car has a cracked cylinder head, that means i have to replace the engine.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle shook and smoke emitted through the vents of the vehicle coming from the engine. the contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and later taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system) and went to toyota of downtown la (located at 1901 s figueroa st, los angeles, ca 90007, (213) 354-9999) without the vehicle and was informed that the part was not available. the contact was informed that the part was not available for the repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 97,400.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and the check pcs and check hybrid system warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to ourisman toyota chantilly (4135 auto park cir, chantilly, va 20151) where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 127,735.
Vehicle stall when hybrid system kicks in and shake, very dangerous considering the car is quiet.
Recall notice eoe was performed on my 2010 prius to correct an invertor problem. a software update was performed. according to my dealer at capistrano toyota as well as other dealers this was just a bandaid and not a true fix. the owner of capistrano toyota as well as other toyota dealers have written to toyota that the invertor needs to be replaced. the dealer h,s had many cars come back after the software fix and had to have the invertor changed. if the invertor fails while driving, the car can possibly just stop running or slow down to 15 miles. this will be very dangerous and possibly deadly.
Vehicle has lost power on the freeway multiple times forcing me to pull over. in one instance i was almost rear ended by a semi. the vehicle will show a temperature warning and will then shut down and read, "check hybrid system". the toyota dealership claims it needs a new engine. this is a well known issue and will go in front of a judge in january. i have contacted toyota about this and they tell me it is out of warranty and not eligible for the warranty enhancement. this should have been an unlimited mileage recall but toyota refuses to do anything about it. this happened again this morning to my wife who was on a freeway where the speed limit is 70mph. this is an extremely dangerous error and i would hate to see someone die because their car stops on the freeway. this vehicle has also had severay p0401 codes, there is an warranty enhancement for this as well but limited to 150k miles. i was told by the toyota dealership it was also a culprit for a blown head gasket.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving various speeds for approximately 250 miles, the vehicle lost two quarts of oil. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 148,785.
Excess oil consumption, used 2 quarts of oil before next oil change, toyota's don't consume oil the way this car does , i've never owned a car with this problem using so much oil. the burnt oil is going to eventually build up causing more issues in the combustion chambers and smog devices .
The vehicle was in a parking lot. upon starting the car, the dash displayed "check hybrid system" and the vehicle could not accelerate above 25 miles per hour.
While driving our 2010 toyota prius ii on the interstate we began noticing a burning smell. then, the abs light illuminated on the dashboard. we pulled onto an off ramp and as we slowed the vehicle down smoke began coming from under the hood. we drove very slowly down the road and the smoke became more prevalent. we turned on a side street and my husband put the vehicle in park, got out, walked to the front, and noticed that the passenger front head lamp was melted and there was a flame. we quickly got our family out of the car (2 kids in carseats in the back). we moved away from the vehicle and the flames become larger and larger. we called 911 and the hood was engulfed in flames by the time the firefighters arrived. they were able to put the fire out quickly, so it did not spread into the front cabin or rear of the vehicle. we had not had any recent work done and the vehicle was fully operational until the time of the fire. we had not been experiencing any problems prior to this incident.
The vehicle was having issue with the steering locked up when turning with motion about 20+mph. the hybrid system is not as advertised the 50mpg in any way as it only gets average about 35mpg. the vehicle has 87000 miles and the old symptoms from second generation followed suit with it. the dash went totally off when weather is cold and suddenly turned back on when it gets warm. i had driven a few miles without the dash on and it was a bad experience since i cannot figure out the speed or what is going on. the steering is the major issue as we dare not to drive the car and the technicians from the dealer said nothing wrong with the vehicle but third party technicians recommend to take to toyota for recall.u turns are the worse that locked the steering and the car almost come to a stop with beeping alarms.
My car completely shut down in traffic, engine, steering, transmission all quit and i was almost in a horrific accident as i could not control the car or get out of anyone's way. the check hybrid warning light was also on. it was towed and the garage said it was a software update that i was not made aware of that caused complete failure.
My 2010 prius has relatively low mileage - approximately 44,000 miles. it has been routinely maintained at the dealership where it was purchased new. i just replaced the tires a couple of months ago, and the only issues have been the takata airbag recall & the need to replace air filters more frequently than may be normal because i do not have a garage so it is parked outside in a driveway where exposure to pollen & debris from trees is excessive. after a significant wind & rain storm wednesday night, the engine rattled & made unusual noises for several seconds when i started the car. then, the "check engine" light came on. i checked the manual, which said not to drive & to call a dealership immediately, which i did. i was told it was not safe to drive & it should be towed to the dealership. i waited until the following morning & started it again to verify the check engine light before having it towed. after i was at the dealership for 3 hours, the service guy told me that when he started it, the car run fine, the check engine light was off, & they were not sure what caused the problem, but their diagnostic evaluation showed a problem with an oil leak in the head gasket. i was quoted a cost of approx. $1500 to open it up, fix the leak, & check for any other problems. i gave the go-ahead, but am wondering if this is symptomatic of a greater problem that will be repeated. i am waiting to hear back from the dealership after the repair today. my goal is to drive the vehicle until it has 100,000 miles or so & then trade in for the newer model. did i make the right decision? do i have a lemon? is this a common problem with the 2010 model? is it reparable, or could the engine now be warped and irreparable?
I was aware the check engine light and alarm came on when i would make right or left hand turns. took my vehicle in for a check. was told there "was no oil on the dipstick" so had my oil changed on 2/21/2018 and my mileage was 72704. they did an oil consumption test at this time. when i returned at 73696 miles to have phase two of the test checked, the oil was at "full level". now at 77,250 miles and am having to add oil again. stopped at toyota service on 6/01/2018 for them to check the warning light. vehicle was low on oil again. they topped off the oil at no charge. thank you! when asked what else could be done about this problem, i was told i could replace the engine. not going to happen with my 2010 prius. not due for an oil change for quite some time. guess i will check and add oil as needed in the interim.
Our prius has been losing power. it has 68k miles and we are the original owners. driving at hwy speeds we noticed we have to push hard down on the gas just to get the car to maintain highway speeds. hills are even worse. we are also still waiting on the parts to fix our headlights. over the years i have changed the low beam bulbs at least 6 times! when are the parts coming?
At about 125k miles, my prius nearly ran out of oil between services, and i religiously service my vehicle. i burned 1 to 2 quarts between services since. at 272,408 miles, i just paid $5751.59 for a complete engine rebuild... rest of car is in great shape. oil consumption problems were known by the dealerships, but i was given no recourse except dealing with it. latest issue..check engine light on, misfire on cylinders 1 and 4 (progressing to all), horrific knocking noise with sound of rushing water upon start-up. eventually, (once the cylinders fired significantly) the engine could run satisfactorily for the remainder of the drive... until the next start. early on i read that toyota knew of the under-engineered motor of the 2010s, but i have not received anything announcing a recall or care to fix their engineering issue. i have my service records to validate the care i've given to my car. the date of the engine rebuild is what i will provide as to when this happened, but the oil consumption began years ago.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the vehicle made an abnormal pounding noise and the check engine indicator illuminated. additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was linked to odometer fraud. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (toyota of hollywood, 6000 hollywood blvd, hollywood, ca 90026), but the cause of the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was taken to toyota of downtown la (1901 s figueroa st, los angeles, ca 90007) where it was diagnosed that the engine was misfiring and an engine compression test was needed to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 91,984.
Car loosing oil i add every 500 miles one liter of oil
Engine loosing oil and i have to add oil every 5 days
At about 100,000 miles engine began using excessive amounts of oil, exceeding 1 quart per 1000 miles. toyota knows this is a problem, and even has a tsb on it: tsb 0168-16, yet refuses to take responsibility.
I had been driving the car and had experienced the loss of power described in recent articles as being an inverter problem (that was the subject of a software update by toyota that may not have fixed the issue). after experiencing this issue several times, my autobody shop recommended replacing the throttle body as the diagnostic codes were not 100% clear what the problem was. i have replaced the throttle body and not had the issue since, but i thought i would report this just in case this is related to the inverter issue. the issue i had was exactly as described -- driving the car, then suddenly losing power and practically unable to move the vehicle (i was able to drive it maybe 3 mph with no power steering, barely got out of an intersection in front of oncoming traffic one time it happened). this happened at various times, always while moving, both on the highway and on city streets, straight/turning. the only time it didn't seem to happen was when stationary. this is the article i read that compelled me to contact nthsa: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-dealership-refuses-to-sell-certain-toyota-prius-models-over-safety-issues/
Vehicle shakes for about 30 to 45 seconds and produce a foul smell inside the cabin it happens off and on and dealer refuse to fix the problem.
My 2010 toyota prius was impeccably maintained by desert toyota of tucson, all service records kept. oil was changed every 5,000 miles rather than the dealer-recommended 10,000. this was my 4th toyota and i expected it, like my other toyotas, to have no significant problems for years. but suddenly in 2017, when the engine turned over 107,000 miles (thus making it out of warranty), i happened to check the oil (several thousand miles before the next service was due) and found it near the bottom of the dipstick. it was fortunate that i checked it because i was able to add oil and save the engine. the car performed as before, but continued to burn about a quart of motor oil every 1000 to 1500 miles. there was no evidence of either smoke from the exhaust, or oil stains underneath the car. my service person at desert merely shrugged and said this kind of thing happened occasionally, offered no remedy or contact with the toyota rep. i began to search the internet, finding that there have been thousands of 2010 toyota priuses with this problem. i have kept the car on the road but am awaiting a reimbursed remedy from toyota, possibly through a class action suit. this oil leakage poses incalculable safety risks to the environment in pollution and unpredictable occurrences. toyota owners do not expect a $5000 engine repair on a $25,000 car within 7 years of purchase, nor should they be responsible for a toyota defect which conveniently occurs when the car is just out of engjine warranty.
The car is consuming oil at unreasonable rates.
Engine burning excessive amount of oil. car has been regularly serviced. last night, i noticed that the oil reservoir level was so low, the dip stick did not even register it. i had to add 2.5 quarts of oil before it started reading the oil level again.
Excessive oil consumption
My 2010 prius with 167,000 has begun burning engine oil at a rate of about 1 quart per thousand miles. 9 weeks after my last oil change and the engine was down 3 quarts of oil. mpg has gone down slightly during this time and no check engine light or low oil pressure warning lights came on.
Water leaking from engine cowel getting into ignition coils which is causing engine to shudder and stop sometimes too. seems to be a known toyota issue yet not being rectified by manufacturer. seals seem to allow water to get into the ignition coils hence the issue. vehicle is stationary when first observed then shuddering and misfiring occurring as vehicle is being driven also leading to loss of power as its being driven which is quite dangerous on highways.
The engine is now burning oil and must be replaced. toyota is quoting me over 3,000 in parts.
This afternoon, my wife was driving down a two lane, paved street at about 25 mph. the street has a slight decline and she began to apply the breaks to slow down slightly. just a second or two later, she hit a small bump in the road and the car accelerated (while she had her foot on the break) for a fraction of a second. we didn't hear the sound of the engine revving. thankfully, there were no other cars on the road at this time and there was time to press the break again. based on looking around online, many people have reported similar issues (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2010/02/toyota-adds-2010-prius-braking-problem-to-the-list-recall-possible/index.htm).
Excessive oil consumption led to engine failure and replacement cost of approximately $5000.00 also excessive oil cost to constantly fill oil over the years. i purchased the vehicle new. and got stuck with it as i was going through divorce and not working it was unfortunately cheaper to pay for a used engine replacement through toyota. i have saved all receipts in hopes of recuperating money in the future
When i am coming to a stop (braking normally) and hit a bump, the car surges slightly and the brakes become less responsive. it feels like i'm fighting the engine as it accelerates and i'm trying to brake against it. releasing the brake and attempting again seems to be a solution, but i often don't have time before reaching the intersection i'm approaching. this consistently happens in two places in my daily commute with a slight buckle in the road approaching an intersection on city streets and county roads.
I've had two toyota prius in my lifetime, a 2005 and a 2010 toyota prius, both have had the same issue where the engine would eat up all of my oil, i would have an oil change done and less than 2 weeks later i would have to check the oil gauge rod and find that the oil levels were below the bottom line, almost empty! the engine would be burning oil at such an alarming rate that i would repeatedly bring the vehicle to toyota for oil changes. i'm very unsatisfied with my toyota priuses. my car is currently at 166,384 miles and the engine cylinder has now given way and also the hybrid battery. i've gone only to toyota dealerships to have pristine consecutive service and no third party repair facilities have provided service. i am located in souther california in san diego. i have spoken to many other toyota prius owners and if you do a google search online as of (04/10/17) "toyota prius engine oil consumption" you'll find many forums with "excessive consumption" from many other users. once you reach past the 140,000 mile mark, your car is pretty much done. consider buying a new one. toyota priuses and their engineers have to come up with a way to satisfy current and future prius owners as many of us will find that there will be many problems and issues down the road.
2010 toyota prius failed an oil engine consumption test at 98,000 miles. it burned 3 quarts in 1,100 miles. toyota has service bulletin issued in november 2016 to cover this car but inherently, it isn't covered. i have service records that this was happening in june 2015 at 82000 miles, before i bought the car in sept 2016. toyota will only cover half of $3000 cost of repair. issue appears to be widespread, across many models from what i've read online and experienced in the dealership. toyota's failure to address this situation when it has been happening for years is highly alarming, considering it affects a major part of the engine.
On picking up my prius after routine maintenance, i was told that it was 3 quarts low in engine oil. i was stunned as i had had no warning of low oil pressure or loss of performance. the dealer is conducting an "oil consumption test" to measure how much oil will be consumed in 1200 miles. the estimated repair cost was $2000, but my husband who is very knowledgeable about engines doesn't believe the suggested repair will fix the problem. i have only recently become aware that this is a prevalent problem with late model toyotas, not just prius. the customer service agent and the service tech we spoke with were cagey when asked how frequently they have seen this problem. i believe toyota is very aware of the issue, but are willfully not addressing a remedy.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact took the vehicle to toyota of west plains (1902 porter wagoner blvd, west plains, mo 65775) for a scheduled oil change before a road trip. upon returning from the road trip, it was discovered that there was no oil in the vehicle and the number two head cylinder was burned out. the vehicle was towed to the same dealer and repaired at the vehicle owner's expense. after the repair, the ecu power management board malfunctioned and the dealer refused to reimburse the contact for the repairs. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that there would be no reimbursement for the repairs because the recall had expired. the vin tool found no recalls for the vehicle. the recall information was not provided. the failure mileage was 111,226.
This car uses alot of oil in general use. i put in 4 quarts about every 2 months
Oil consumption terrible. need to add 1 qt of oil every 1,100 miles. engine is burning a ton of oil.
Excessive oil consumption after having my oil changed at the dealership at 100k miles, i left on a cross-country trip. during the trip, the low oil pressure signal flashed on my dashboard. upon pulling over and checking the oil, i found there was no oil in the engine at all. i added 4 quarts checking the level in increments with the dipstick, and continued. i had to add an additional quart of oil to the engine over the following week, until returning home. upon returning, the dealership refused to accept any responsibility for the issue and informed me that i needed new pistons and rings. they did not inform me that this is a recurring issue with my generation of prius and were quite firm that it was not their problem. there is not reason that a toyota with 100,000 mile on it should randomly start burning excessive amounts of oil within a few thousand miles of an oil and filter change. all of the maintenance is performed at the dealership at the specified intervals, and i would expect that toyota would stand behind a toyota that is maintained per toyota specifications. *tr
