How to clean a throttle body

The procedure for cleaning your throttle body is as follows:

Step 1: Make sure to leave enough room around the engine compartment while parking your automobile outside.

Step 2: Remove the ground terminal (negative) from the vehicle's battery to disconnect it safely.

Step 3: Note and label any tiny hoses or air ducts that must be removed to reach the throttle body. You may identify each hose with masking tape or use specialized labeling tape for clarity.

Step 4: Remove the air duct connected to the throttle body. Exercise caution not to disconnect any electrical wires or terminals.

Typically, the air duct is secured with hose clamps, which can be loosened using appropriate hand tools. In some cases, you may need to gently twist and pull the duct to remove it.

Occasionally, both sides of the throttle body connect to air ducts with hose clamps; in such instances, removing one side will expose the throttle body.

Step 5: If you encounter difficulties removing the air ducts, do not proceed with the project; seek assistance from a professional technician.

Step 6: Remove enough air ducting to reveal the throttle body, taking care not to damage any gaskets. The throttle body's appearance will likely be similar to the one shown here. Don rubber gloves and eye protection.

There may be some white exhaust smoke initially. It is also common for the engine control computer to relearn parameters after a battery disconnect.

Step 13: Allow the engine to idle for a minute or two, then take your vehicle for a test drive.
