2009 toyota corolla. consumer writes in regards to water pump pulley disengagement and need for third set of tires on vehicle. *smd the consumer stated he heard a noise coming from under the hood, followed by a sound of something hitting the highway. he gradually slowed down and pulled to the side of the road, raised the hood and discovered the flywheel for the water pump sitting on top of the engine. he walked back up the highway in an attempt to locate what fell from the vehicle. he gathered what he found and was loose under the hood, and had the vehicle towed to the nearest service center and had a new water pump installed. while at the service center, the brakes were serviced and a new set of tires were recommended because they were cupping. the consumer took the vehicle to another establishment to have the tires inspected. firestone, informed the consumer the left front and rear tow was out of alignment and they adjusted the left front to correct it, but informed him, they could not make any adjustment for the rear, as there was no guarantee given that the alignment issue was the cause of the cupping. within a week of having the new water pump installed, the consumer began to hear a clicking sound from under the hood, so he took the vehicle back to the repair shop, to determine the cause of the clicking sound. an inspection revealed the a/c compressor needed to be replaced.

I have had this corolla for about 3 years, average about 700 miles per week - drive it daily. i have had no significant issues with it until the past month or so in which i have experienced two "sudden acceleration" events. in both cases i was traveling at a very low speed, about 10 mph or so in parking lots. while coasting / braking with my foot on the brake pedal, suddenly it was as if the brake pedal turned into an accelerator pedal! i felt all of the back-pressure the brake pedal normally has leave and it went almost completely down to the floor. at the very same instant the engine revved and began to accelerate and the car "leaped" forward. in both cases this lasted only a few seconds then things went back to normal. there were no indicator lights on the panel warning of anything wrong. in both cases my foot was clearly on the brake pedal and nowhere near the accelerator pedal. i visually inspected the floor mat and there was absolutely no interference between it and the accelerator pedal. this car has already had all of toyota's "recall" remedies applied to it and could be easily ascertained by examining the maintenance records at butler toyota of macon, georgia. i would like it if someone could examine the car's computer (not the toyota people for obvious reasons)to see if these events were recorded or not. until now i have liked this car very much in every way. however, considering all of the recent reports and now my personal experiences twice i am very much concerned about the car's safety. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated while the oil was being changed by an authorized dealer, he was informed that the power steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated the front passenger side wheel was shaking and the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,000. updated 03/21/2012 *bf

I bought this car used with 18,000 miles on it in july of 2010. and i have all service done at a toyota dealer. at 25,975 miles, replaced the front brakes, machined rotors, brake fluid flush, cleaned and adjusted rear brakes(1/28/12). (brake pedal felt soft). at 37,966 miles , replaced the front brakes again(12/21/12). pads lasted 11,991 miles! at 55,662 miles, replaced the front brakes, machined rotors again(2/20/2014). pads lasted 17,696 miles! since i do mainly highway driving, i feel that there is a defect associated with the front brake abnormal wear. also, at 50,548 replaced #2 steering shaft assembly. at, 50,691 replaced alternator. at 55,662 replaced water pump, coolant and drive belt. *tr

2009 toyota corolla. consumer states issues with screeching noise *tgw the consumer stated the noise would occur, when she started the vehicle, followed by the battery light illuminating. the battery light would eventually go off and then the vehicle would make the screeching noise again. the problem started intermittently in october and one day it completely drained the battery. the battery was replaced and the issue continued, becoming more frequent. when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, they informed her the problem was the drive belt, which was replaced. the noise continued and a hot burning smell appeared after the screeching noise. the consumer went to get a second opinion and was informed the problem was the clutch pulley in which a recall had been issued, but not for her model. the consumer then went back to the dealer with the new information and was told she needed a new alternator. the consumer also stated there was an issue with the vehicle idling in a strange manner. the vehicle randomly vibrated and idled very low when stopping at a red light or stop sign. *jb

Bought used 2009 toyota corolla (5 speed manual clutch) vehicle in mid 2011. noticed that the gas pedal, brake and clutch are oddly very close, and gas pedal seems to stick, which seems to cause error in shifting/ acceleration/ de-acceleration, especially when using in between gears. not sure what that is all about, or whether or not there has been a prior complaint about this or recall, but i think it should be brought to the attention and fixed by toyota for safety reasons. *tr

Well, there was a very loud rattle noise when starting engine (cold engine) i took car to puente hills, ca toyota dealership as they told me it was a camshaft gear assembly known issue in the toyotas 2009. they charged me about $179.00 for labor as the car was still under warranty. the problem continued and goes away once in a while, but continues after all. i just took car back to same dealer, as they told me that it will cost about $872.15 to fix problem. i would like to know if there's a recall or any other legal remedies i could take in this matter. *tr

When i stopped at a stop sign, it stalled and has done so on several more occasions since. i also had a problem on the freeway when i was going about 65 mph and it pulled back like it was going to stop but then finally went back up to speed. i just bought the car on 8/31/11 from a car dealer. i went on the toyota owners website to register the next day and noticed that the previous owner had a stalling problem as well and had it looked at and nothing was found. *tr

I was currently on 1 and 9 north of jersey city nj. i was on a stop light and when it turned green, the car did not accelerate as much as it was suppose to when you press on gas pedal. it was literally moving 5 miles per hour. i was pressing the gas pedal for the car to go but it was still not even moving up. i turned on the hazards and pulled over. then the check engine light came on. i turned off the car first. i checked the gas tank and the engine but i couldn't find anything wrong with it. the check engine light was lit until the next day. i brought it to the car dealership and they said they are not 100% sure what is wrong with it but they disconnected the alarm wire to see if that was the problem. the second problem of this car is when you press on the brake, it still moves a little bit. when you start going and pressing on the gas pedal, you have to press on it harder for it to go but it gases up than it normally does. i have recently saw the previous owners receipts for its car service and he had the same problem. he always had to fix the accelerator but until now, it is still the same and still needs to be fixed. i don't know what to do and where to go to fix this problem.

2009 toyota corolla 4 cylinder engine automatic transmission. when you press the accelerator pedal in the 2,000 rpm range there is an audible whistle coming from the engine. in the lower rpms there is no unusual sound and that same goes for the higher rpms, but every time the rpm needle goes through the 2,000 rpm it whistles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the vehicle began to lose engine power and the vehicle would not respond to the contact's attempts to accelerate. the vehicle then stalled as the contact coasted off the roadway. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, however the check engine warning indicator was illuminated. the vehicle resumed normal for a short period of time before the failure recurred. the failure would recur intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed the contact that the failure was related to the engine harness. the contact did not feel safe driving the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 40,161.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla le. while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and drove over a curb. the vehicle proceeded to accelerate yet the contact was able to stop the unintended acceleration. on a separate occasion while reversing, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was unable to get the vehicle into gear until he had someone manually push the vehicle. the vehicle was repaired yet the failure persisted. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 9,000 and the current mileage was 10,000. updated 10/13/10*bf updated 10/19/10

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that whenever the brakes were applied from 5 mph or more, the vehicle would vibrate abnormally. the contact stated the vehicle would act as if it were attempting to stall. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 12,600.

2009 toyota corolla. consumer states several problems with vehicle *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle maintained speed of travel even after his foot was removed from the accelerator pedal. travel speed decreased only after the vehicles regular brake had been removed. there was a spike in the rpm under normal driving conditions without change in pressure applied to the accelerator pedal. also, there was erratic idling while the vehicle was in park without the consumer touching the accelerator pedal. the consumer continued to experience problems with the accelerator pedal after the recall was performed. *jb

Batesville, in, 6 pm, dry, level ground started after 2 hr. standing, exited lot to stop sign, braked; engine raced against brake, slowed when shifted d-n-d with brake applied. after two blocks, at red signal, did it again. eight subsequent occurrences, most recent involving " redlining" of the tachometer and inability to retard by the means given above. four of these have occurred in the past seven weeks. present mileage 16,677. *tr

Car would not start. towed to dealer. car started @ dealer. advisor said the same thing has happened to five other cars in the last 30 days. *tr

2009 toyota corolla car was recalled for brake problem. when i have the below problem, the brakes will not stop the car. engine revs up for no reason when the car is stopped. in my case, all engine speed ups occurred when i was stopped, and my foot was on the brake. it has happened about 10 times since i have owned the car. the last time it occurred, i was stopped at a stop sign, and the engine sped up and forced me into the intersection, where i ran into the side of a pickup. the engine has sped up when i first started the car, and the car was in park, and my foot on the brake. toyota has looked at my car and said there is nothing wrong with it. toyota said that i had an after market floor mat on the drivers side and that is a no/no. when the engine sped up with me driving, there was no mat on the driver side floor, except the toyota mat and it was restrained by the clips. do car manufactures ever look at comments made my their customers? in my case, i was told no. *tr

When i start the car the engine noise alternated between high and low. the rpm was fluctuating a lot even though the car was only being heated. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving approximately 15 to 20 mph while making a left turn the vehicle stalled. he was able to coast onto the emergency lane. he restarted the vehicle and it began to function normally. he drove approximately 5 miles and the vehicle stalled again. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer at least seven times. he called the dealer a couple of weeks ago and they advised him that he would have to pay for a diagnostic test. while driving approximate 65 mph with the cruise control activated the vehicle began to accelerate. he engaged the brake pedal and the vehicle slowed down. he took his vehicle to the dealer for a recall repair and they did not replace the floor mats. the contact was unable to provide a vin. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 50,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while the contact was driving approximately 20 mph coming to a complete stop, there was a rough and extremely low engine idle. the failure was sporadic. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure and stated that there was no remedy for the experienced failure. the failure mileage was 10,021. updated 05/25/10*bf the consumer stated the check engine light illuminated and the oxygen sensor had to be replaced. updated 05/27/10.*jb updated 07/14/2010.*lj updated 07/14/10*jb

I am the owner of 2009 toyota corolla. i have to press my brake pedal hard and almost all the way down to make my car to stop. i called my dealership about the problem but the dealership want to charge me $89 to look at it. i called toyota customer service line but got no result. i am also smelling burning odor coming from my vents when i turn the heat on. i called the dealership and all they want is to charge me money to look at my problem. *tr

My daughter and son-in-law while driving in their 09 toyota corolla, experienced uncontrolled acceleration; on a straight piece of dry pavement, causing the vehicle to shoot into the oncoming lane (a condition known as torsional steering by some) on a 2 way traffic road striking a car in the oncoming lane and thus causing a major accident. there were only slight injuries. though the wheels were pointed straight ahead, the car veered left as the car uncontrollably sped up. my son-in-law states that his foot was not on the pedal. the action initiated after he depressed the pedal to accelerate along with other traffic. the car was repair by the insurance but still has the original problem. it has only done it the time that the car was involved in the accident and my daughter and son in law have been reluctant to use it since the accident so thus we have not had the experience recur. yes the original part is available and still on the vehicle, though toyota is scheduled to either repair it or replace it soon. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla which was purchased brand new. immediately after the vehicle was purchased while driving home the dealer at speeds of less than 60 mph, there was minimal resistance in the steering wheel. he had to continue moving the steering wheel six inches back and forth and from left to right in order to keep the wheel straight while driving. the manufacturer was contacted and advised him that there were no recalls for the failure. he experienced the "loose" feeling in the steering wheel intermittently every time he drove the vehicle, especially in windy weather conditions. there were no repairs made to the vehicle. the manufacturer would not offer any assistance. the failure mileage was 50 and the current mileage was 33,500. updated 04/13/10. *lj the check engine light illuminated on four ocassionss. the dealer found a small leak in the evap system. updated 10/12/10

I own a 2009 toyota corolla that has had numerous incidents of not starting. the vehicle will not start after sitting for a period of time, however, it will start after numerous attempts to do so. this vehicle was purchased brand new in april 2008. i have had this vehicle in the shop on three separate occasions with this same issue and they tell me they cannot find a cause for this. this has also happened four other times that i did not take the vehicle to the garage since they informed me they could not fix it if it would not repeat the behavior. the occurrence is very sporadic and there is no way to know when it will happen again. the last time it was in the garage they placed a fuel additive in the gas tank to fix the problem... still no resolve. *tr

I was driving home from a dallas cowboy game with my grandson on a rural road. the car suddenly lost power and lights starting flashing. it almost came to a sudden stop. i had no steering control for a short period. the enginewarning light continued to flash. i was able to drive home at about 25 miles per hour. i called the dealer in abilene texas and was told to have the car toed. they could not or would not tell me what had happen. they did tell me that they got it to repeat what i had happen, but did not know what caused it. if this had happened sooner while on a busy highway, i believe there could have been a serious accident. i believe this is a computer problem with the cas. the car only had 5000 miles and i was not compensated for the towing as promised. *tr

Approaching red light, car in neutral, right foot depressing brake, left resting on clutch, and car was slowing down when engine revved (watched tachometer needle jump). as engine revved i checked to make sure that right foot was not near gas pedal (wasn't). this was second occurrence of the engine revving when gas pedal was not engaged. apparently there is a recall for this defect. i am not an automotive engineer. gas pedal will be modified by dealer within the week, but both times my feet were not near the pedal when the rpm's increased. *tr

2009 corolla devoled a shuddering or stalling when depressing clutch coming to a stop which also drops rpms from 900 to a little under 800 when car stops causing the car to run rough and this drop happens all the time but it may drop slow or fast not the same every time this problem started at 5000 miles with oil consumption problem associated by toyota reflashing ecm per tcb which one week later check engine light comes on #3cly cde showing miss fire tech erased code missing any diagnosis care still acting up gulf state toyota tech says erase ecm still not changed dealer cant find code don't know how to fix . last visit to dealer was 2-10-2010 dealer champion toyota houston t713-943-7780 service mgr and gen mgr car ran fine until oilconsumption and reflashing ecm car has 7139 miles on it i am not pleased and wonder if you know what you are doing!!!!!! *tr

Very often, my 2009 corolla will have a very low idle, the car acts as it is going to stall. it shudders, the tach drops low, but then will come back up. it happens several times per week when i am either backing up or going from a stop into first gear. i have driven only manual transmissions for over 26 years, and this is the first vehicle i have owned that this has happened with. i fear i will be hit from behind, or t-boned when the car acts as if it wants to stall. it never has stalled, but it frightens us. as i mentioned, the car shudders, shakes when this happens to us. we feel it may have something to do with a low idle problem, either with the electronics or software. we have taken it back to the dealer a few times, but it's the famous "can not duplicate" answer. we only drive this vehicle usually from april to late october. we live in the snowbelt of ohio and drive our 4x4 jeep nov. through march. i also drive a 2001 manual transmission honda civic, with never theses issues. i can't give incident dates, this happens frequently during each week, ever since i took delivery of this car in march, 2008. again, this is a 2009 corolla s. *tr

Oil consumption problems on 2009 corolla made first oil change at 3111 miles now 5031 miles oil is barely showing 2000 miles in 7 months where is the oil i feel toyota has fudged by using 0w-20 to 5w-20 to pass cafe standards for fuel mileage or they have ring problems a new car should not lose this much oil something is wrong and i don't want to see car damaged by there engineering failure. *tr

When driving on i-355, many dashboard lights went up and car temperature is very high too. it is a brand new toyota corolla (<2000 miles). had to tow it to the dealer and was told that a rodent chewed up ac and coolant tubes. never heard of it. what a lousy design or parts that attract rodents. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while the contact was driving approximately 15 mph making a left turn, the engine completely stalled. the engine warning indicator illuminated. the engine would not restart. the vehicle was coasted to an authorized dealer where the engine coil was replaced. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on three different times for the identical engine failure and they were unable to locate a problem. however, during the three failure occurrences the vehicle would restart after numerous attempts. the technician stated the replacement of the starter and ignition could possibly correct the failure. the parts were unavailable at the time of the complaint. the vehicle would be repaired upon the parts arrival date. the failure mileage was approximately 16,000.

Ever since i purchased my 2009 toyota corolla i have noticed steering difficult. i read blogs at the time and it seemed from what i read, that this was just a draw back of the car, so i let it go. i feel i need to report it now. the steering feels way to responsive to even the slightest hand movement of the wheel, or bump in the road. because the suspension on this model is so stiff, a bump in the road can cause my hand to move a tiny bit, resulting in the car moving much more than one would expect from little movement. the best way to sum up the problem is this; it is near impossible to just go straight, or hold the wheel still for a second. you have to constantly move slightly to the right or the left just to keep in the middle of your lane. going around curves smoothly is difficult as well. if it is windy this problem is 10 fold, and down right dangerous. i have already skidded off a snowy highway because the car so easily fish tailed while trying to correct my steering. luckily there was no damage, had there been vehicle in the lane next to mine, there would have been a horrific crash. in my 17 years of driving i have never fish tailed before. the alignment and tires have been checked and are fine. i had the brake recall done before the above mentioned incident. there doesn't feel to be an alignment issue. the car does not pull. the steering just seems far too sensitive, this combined with it's odd aerodynamic response, and bumpy ride make the steering feel very unsafe at times. even when it doesn't feel dangerous, it is tiring to have to constantly adjust the wheel right and left just to keep it in lane. i've never had a steering issue like this with any other car. there is also the overwhelming smell of sulfur in the passenger cabin several times a week, seems the catalytic converter doesn't handle it well. took it to a dealer for the sulfur issue and they said that's normal. makes me light headed at times, on top of just stinking up my new car. *tr

Our 2007 toyota corolla has a failure in the air conditioning system. after the winter, the a/c was turned on and it would not cool. freon was put into the system and it cooled down again. however, a hissing noise was coming from the car after putting in the freon. turns out there is a leak in the air conditioner's condenser. the tsb on the 2003 - 3005 corolla indicated there was a problem with the air conditioning system. supposedly, toyota corrected this problem on future corolla's, but evidently there is still a problem with it. we are having the condenser replaced. *tr

Bought brand new (3miles) corolla le on friday, jan 2, 2009. on jan 5, while making a turn into a parking lot, the car completely "froze": no steering, no acceleration, no braking possible. all dashboard lights came on. i came to a stop (luckily, the parking lot was semi-empty); turned off the ignition, restarted the car. all dashboard lights were off- but the "check engine" stayed on. called the dealer who recommended bringing the car to service for a check. drove there (7 miles)- the "check engine" light remained on the whole time. the mechanic said that "the engine light doesn't come on". was given the car back (after road test by the mechanic and, presumably, a computerized check) and told that "there is nothing wrong with the car". feel completely unsafe driving the vehicle now. *tr

Excessive oil consumption ( 1qt. per 1k) for 09 toyota corolla. *tr

Vehicle stalling when making a quick deceleration from over 40mph to 15mph or to a complete stop. engine dies, check engine light comes on, and electrical continues to function. car restarts with no problem. this has occurred 2ce in the past 2 days, once the engine was cold, within 2 miles of start, the other occurred when engine was warm after driving 10 miles on highway, and slowing down quickly to pass through electronic toll booth. toyota dealer checked vehicle, could not duplicate, nor did the system store any codes or event conditions. *tr

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla in march 2008. since the purchase i've had an issue of a rotten egg sulfur odor emitting from the emissions exhaust system and into the car cabin. the problem has known to occur while accelerating the gas pedal and coming to an idle or stop. it occurs during town driving, inclines, highways speeds, and upon starting vehicle. i have returned the car to the dealer 4 times for this issue. the dealer from whom i purchased the vehicle stated they couldn't find or duplicate the issue. toyota tech performed evaluation of components related to fuel trim and possible related performance. the dealer stated they found no bulletins or related issue with the toyota tech data system. i was also informed to try another brand of gas.. i took the car to a second dealer after discovering engine consumed 3 quarts of oil. they performed a tsb0145-08 2zrfe engine oil consumption reflash concerning the ecm. i was informed that this may resolve the sulfur rotten egg odor or that the catalytic converter needed a break-in period. during the winter of 2010 the rotten egg odor had become worse. to be more specific the vehicle cabin area filled with an intense rotten egg odor after restarting the car upon driving up an incline. i took the car in for service with the same complaint and they performed a repeated technical service bulletin for excessive oil consumption. they stated exhaust system seemed ok.. toyota recommended a different grade of gas. i was informed by the service advisor that gasoline contains more sulphites in the winter and may be the cause.. since purchasing this car i was diagnosed with a lymphoma cancer a year later to be exact. this has been an on going issue. i've tried several brand gasolines and grades as they recommended. i've been in remission from the cancer for a year now and no longer driving the car for the fear that the car is a hazard to my health. also, i have prior lung condition called copd. *tr
