Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2012 Toyota Camry

I have a 2012 toyota camry. while making a turn the car loses acceleration. if the turn is long, as in a cloverleaf exit, the vehicle will almost stop. pressing the gas has no effect. the vehicle will lag until it almost stops or until you come out of the turn. from what i find on the internet, this is a common problem with 2012 and later toyota camrys but dealers stonewall about it. i hope you get enough complaints on this to issue a recall.

Accelerating from a stop the vehicle will sometimes move about 10 feet and then hesitate for about 1 to 2 seconds. it will then accelerate normally. the intermittent hesitation could be dangerous.

The car will randomly stop accelerating when depressing the gas pedal. you can then lift up and press back down and it normally will respond again. this is very dangerous in traffic.

On 5/24/18 at 1435 in chicago il, my 2012 toyota camry fully accelerated through ongoing traffic after lightly depressing the pedal to move forward the brakes did not work and i had to maneuver through oncoming traffic into a grass area across the street to slow down but coming down on the other side hitting another vehicle. chicago police dept report #jb-282363

Delay in shifting on low speeds bettween 20 and 50 mph.the car shuttters when accelerating or coming to stop

I was in an accident driving on a city street due to the vehicle accelerating, i slowed down then put my foot on the pedal. the car took off i slammed on my brakes but still hit the vehicle in front of me. i have told the dealer more than once about the vehicle stalling and accelerating. i had front end damage to my bumper and hood. the vehicle i crashed into back bumper was also dented.

As i am accelerating between 20-50 mph the car shudders. i called my local toyota dealership and they want to charge me a diagnostic fee of $140 just to see if that is the problem. my son has a 2014 and my daughter has a 2015 and all have the same exact problem. i have 110,000 miles on my car, my son 80,000 and my daughter 70,000 miles. this should be a recall since we all have the same exact problem. i am afraid as we are accelerating to enter the freeway and the car is stalling we might get hit from behind. its definitely a safety issue!

When accelerating car hesitate for a couple of seconds then take off while taking my kids to school and also driving to work on the highway i feel very unsafe with my kids in car. *tr

Tirs go down backed seat belt don't work speed don't work well

The car hesitates for three to five seconds after decelerating, or when turning a corner, taking my foot off the pedal and then trying to accelerate again. brought to dealer and they updated the software and told me there isn't any problems with the care. they lie. over 200 people have reported this problem with toyotas on one site alone.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. while driving at approximately 5 mph and attempting to park, the accelerator pedal was lightly depressed and the vehicle suddenly accelerated and caused the contact to hit a traffic pole. the contact applied force to the brake pedal and the vehicle continued to surge forward. a police report was not filed and no injuries were reported. the vehicle was towed to dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

When left foot is momentarily left on brake while depressing accelerator with right foot acceleration begins then stops for several seconds causing a real safety issue. toyota admitted they have a program built into the camry to offset "sudden acceleration" issue. so, they admitted they eliminated a major issue while creating another issue. toyota's logic is ridiculous. they are idiots!!!

I've been having issues for a few months now with my 2012 camry not accelerating when i press on the gas pedal. this usually happens when i turn a corner & most recently has happened many times while driving on a straight road down a city street. i could be going about 25-35 mph, press the brake to slow down but then when i press on the gas pedal to pick up speed again, the car will stall meaning it doesn't accelerate at all & just coasts. i've had other people drive my car & the same thing has happened to them while driving. i have had cars almost run into the back of my car because of this & i have children with one of them being only 2 years old & they have been in the car with me at times when this happens. i have notified toyota of the problem many times but they just keep telling me that it's normal & that they can't find anything wrong. they also mentioned that the computer software is experiencing some type of delay or something to that effect & that could be the problem. i purchased my camry brand new in 2012 & i have always kept the service current on my car. of course toyota has proof of that in their system. i need for them to acknowledge this issue & correct it before myself, my children or someone else gets severely hurt or lose our lives or cause someone else to lose their life. this is a very scary situation to be in especially while in high speed traffic. i will continue to make toyota aware of the problem until something is done.

Tl* the contact owned a 2012 toyota camry. while driving 32 mph, the brakes were applied and the vehicle accelerated rapidly without warning. the contact stated that she could not stop the vehicle and crashed into a trailer. the vehicle was destroyed. the air bags did not deploy. the contact sustained a fractured sternum and her husband had contusions in his rib cage. medical attention was required. a police report was filed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 37,000. updated 1/15/16 *cn

Vehicle now at dealership for irregular acceleration patterns, and random hesitation. can start off at light and vehicle does not respond normally, and then takes off. this is scary while in an intersection. dealership says they can't find anything and blaming me. i've read many instances on line with same problem. how do i handle this before there's an accident? this is dangerous. i've since been advised of problems also with this dealership.

I was driving on xpressway just pulling onto it,push down on gas to get speed and pedal was pushed all the way to the floor and my camry would not go any faster then 40 i let up and tried again and still 40, then all at once it started going faster and faster

3/31/2015 7:05 am after i pressed the gas pedal to turn in my driveway, the car just took off. i braked and it would not stop. i ran into the right front corner of my garage, through my neighbors front yard on the right of my house. as i sped through my neighbors yard i mowed down a small tree. i then crossed the street and went over the sidewalk and stopped short of the subdivision lake. the air bag did not deploy. *tr

Toyota camry 2012 and 2013 which i have when there is an elevation and there is a signal.immediatly when you take you leg out of brake . the car immediately start rolling back soo fast. i missed hitting the car behind number of occasions by pressing gas quickly. i have showed this problum to dealer they said it is common problum. the car should not go too fast back in a small alivation which is not safe .

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. the contact mentioned that the failure previously occurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 22,000.

Bought this car used just over a month ago. made a 1 hour trip yesterday with our 2 children. sudden unexpected acceleration caused me to almost wreck twice as i was entering the city we were visiting. one would've been serious due to location. both times occurred when i was decelerating to go around sharp turns by letting off the gas, but not using break. prior to entering town, the cruise had been set, but was turned off before issue occurred. i've been a loyal toyota owner for nearly 2 decades. we've owned 6 diff toyotas (tundra, tacoma, prius, 2 camrys, and a lexus ls 400) and have never experienced anything but great quality. unfortunately, the issue i experienced yesterday, with the negligent manner in which it seems toyota has handled these complaints from other owners, is serious enough to cause me to reconsider ever owning another toyota. if it can't be resolved (which it seems it can't), i'd really like to get my money back and get a different car now, since i've only owned this car about 6 weeks. very disappointed in my long time favorite auto manufacturer. very disappointed! i would welcome discussion on this matter. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. when parking the vehicle, it accelerated unintentionally without warning. as a result, the contact crashed the vehicle into a building and the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained neck, back and knee injuries that required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 43,000. the vin was not available. ....updated 01/12/15*bf updated 01/15/15*jb

On 9/24/14, while traveling home from a neighborhood park, i was hit by a truck on the driver side. i was going down a slight hill and was going to turn right at the intersection. i'm not sure exactly what happened prior to impact but my turn signal was on, i was going to turn right and i was breaking. suddenly, i heard this loud crash, when i looked to my left, i saw my driver's side mirror being pushed into my door, then i saw the truck. my car did not stop. i was going apprx 15 to 25 miles per hour maybe, and again i was traveling slightly downhill and would have been making a turn. i think my car was continuing to move forward in the seconds before impact. once i was hit, my car continued to move, seemingly faster. at that point i was very much aware that my car was not stopping and the breaks were not working. amazingly, i was able to navigate the corner (without being hit by anyone coming from the opposite direction) and turn the car into a parking lot (with no control of the breaks). in front of me in the parking lot, which is not a big lot, my car continued heading in the direction of a building there. i could not stop the car and was forced to put it into park, hoping that would stop the car. it did. however, the airbags did not deploy. the police were called, a ticket was issued to me stating that i drove without due care and caution. my insurance and toyota hotline have been contacted. the process is just beginning and i will not know the full extent of the damages until the "black box" is inspected. this has been very upsetting and could have resulted in a much more serious outcome. i thought toyota's acceleration problems had been dealt with. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. while driving at approximately 25 mph, the accelerator pedal was lightly depressed and the vehicle suddenly accelerated and caused the contact to crash into the rear of another vehicle. the contact applied force to the brake pedal and the vehicle continued to surge forward. a police report was filed and no injuries were reported. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on two separate occasions where the failure was unable to be determined, but stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the dealer updated the software for the computer and provided a usb with technical diagnosis information. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Pulling into a parking space, i pushed the break, and the car lunged forward. it accelerated, i pushed the break again, looking to make sure my foot was on the break. it was. the car drove over a parking space barrier and crashed into a fence, knocking down the fence, and ultimately stopping the car. *js

2012 toyota camry. consumer writes in regards to vehicle brakes malfunction. *smd the consumer stated his wife was unable to stop the vehicle after pushing the brake pedal, which went all the way to the floor. *jb updated 07/21/14

I was at a stop light and as soon as the light turned green, i pressed on the accelerator but to no avail. the car did not move as usual, so i moved my foot off the accelerator. once my foot was off the gas pedal, the car took a certain spring and unintended acceleration. i was taking by surprised and quickly acted to control the vehicle to safety. i will be reporting this incident to toyota of north america and will wait for them to instruct me as to what to do. safety is a great concern to me and my family and hope that toyota does the right thing and makes sure to provide us an answer and repairs our vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the contact also mentioned that the vehicle failed to respond deceleration attempts. the contact crashed into a nearby tree. upon impact, the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained injuries to the face and chest area. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 14,000.

This complaint is similar to complaint #10545567. the camry experiences spurious or intermittent acceleration hesitation and sometimes stalls when acceleration is needed. this is a potentially dangerous condition especially in when entering a highway or accelerating onto an interstate. dealer has been notified several times about the situation, but because this is an intermittent condition, the dealer doesn't see it and claims cannot diagnose the condition. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph into a residential garage, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed through the garage door. a police report was not filed and no injuries were reported. the vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 22,000.

I bought this vehicle on september 2012 just for my usual commute of 20 miles per day. the first few months just about 1000 miles on the odometer i started to experience stalling anytime i slow down on traffic or turning. i thought because it new vehicle but it keep on until my first oil change about 5000 miles when i complained to the dealership; there is no any code and i was referred back to the dealership that i bought; second oil change no problem found. now it stalls almost any time that i am driving it, i did open a case (case #: 1309201533) with toyota north america, and i got call from their regional representative today that because there is no code, toyota cannot resolve the problem because there is no any code to diagnostic. i am afraid, this will cause an accident to me and my family because i have nine and seven years old who always sit at the back, and if the car was to stall us on highway, it will be a serious disaster for my family. please, i will like toyota to take the vehicle with a complete diagnostics or replace it completely as i am paying for it as at now. thank you *js

2012 toyota camry. daughter wrote in on behalf of mother. consumer was unable to stop the vehicle, by pressing on the brake. *ss the driver of the vehicle was unable to stop, as she approached a stop sign. the driver eventually crashed into a fence. *jb

A friend and me were on a trip to marksville, la, and i put my cruise control on, going about 70 miles per hour down the interstate 20, and all of a sudden it just took off. it scared us so bad i didn't use it anymore during the trip. will, this month my husband and me were going to sheveport, la and i had the cruise control on again and all of a sudden it just took off like a jet. i pressed on the brake and it quit. my husband asked me what i was doing putting on the gas like that. i told him i didn't do it and told him about the time before. so we didn't use this cruise control anymore during this trip. i'm writing to you about this problem in case something could happen that might cause death, just in case if i hit the brake and it doesn't work i'll have this in writing.. for you and my family. you never know. have you had any more complaints about the cruise control? *tr

I was pulling my car onto the carport from driveway, which is at same level, with foot on brake. the car accelerated independently with the car surging forward and the rpm increasing as i was crashing through the carport, fence, patio, two four-wheelers, the concrete patio stairs, propane bbq grill and a wheel barrel. i had my foot on the brake as hard as i could, and it did not stop and the motor continue to race; i thought the engine was going to explode. after all the debris which was in front of the car and under it, it couldn't go any further but the wheels where still spinning and the engine was still racing. if it had not been for my husband who seen it and heard it, he yelled at me " turn off the engine" i don" know what else the car would have destroyed. the car missed running over my husband and the house by a couple of feet. *tr

Yesterday i was pulling into my sisters driveway which is on a downslope incline and my car seemed to accelerate to the point that i has to stomp on the brakes very hard to stop the car. she has a carport in which her car was parked and i thought i was going to crash into the carport and her car. it was very frightening and it has never happened before. i have an appointment tomorrow to take the car to the toyota dealership. it happened so fast and so unexpected i'm not sure what really happened, only what i felt like happened. i heard a scrubbing noise as i was pushing on the break pedal and i thought maybe pushing on the brake so hard had caused that. thank-you for your attention on this matter. *tr

This happens while driving at any speeds. i was driving at 20mph and needed to pick up speed to make a pass and the car just kept on revving and the speed did not increase at all and when it finally picked up speed, it was a hard jerk. it has been happening more often. another incident at a yield sign heading into the highway. as i was entering the highway, i hit brake to slow down and had to gas up to get into the lane and the car just didn't move. i stepped on the gas pedal and the car didn't move. i already changed the torque converter within the warranty but the problem still exist. as of right now, the car is out of warranty. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would decelerate instead and without warning. the contact stated that he would have to pump the accelerator pedal a few times before the vehicle would respond. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the contact was advised that they were unable to replicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 1,000. the current mileage was approximately 3,500. the vin was unavailable. ...updated 04-03-13 *bf

Driving daughters to school in 2012 camry v6 stopped at a yield and the camry accelerated beyond 1500 rpm and i had to press extremely hard on the brakes to keep the camry stopped. camry lunged forward at least two feet. *tr

I have a toyota camry se 2012 (4-cyl) which i bought on 08/29/2012. on 12/31/2012 (the road was clear and dry, it was a cloudy day, no rain, snow, ice on the road) while starting to accelerate from a stop light, turning into a lane, after i stopped pressing the gas pedal, the car kept getting faster and faster (the gas pedal didn't get stuck and my foot wasn't on it), when i started to turn into a lane, the driver's side wheel locked up and to avoid a crash i had to turn the wheel to the other side, i ended up doing a diagonal skid into the other lane, i was able to get the car to stop and straighten it out and keep going. since the driver's side wheel locked up the car jerked me pretty hard and my neck and arm started to hurt since then and i am scheduled to take physical therapy. i took it to the dealer i bought it from for service (from 1/2/2013 - 1/10/2013) and after i picked it up i've been having the rpm sticking at 1.3 all the time so now it's worse than when i had it last. the car doesn't feel safe to drive and i don't want to put my life or other people's lives at risk. after calling toyota and explaining all of this they told me to go to the dealer and the dealer says that toyota is the one that can do whatever they want, the dealer's only resolution is to accept the car as a trade in and roll over the residual value into a loan for another car, but it isn't my fault so i shouldn't have to pay more in payments for a car and i shouldn't have to be paying for a car that's not safe for me or my family to drive. before the incident on 12/31/2012 i had taken it in to the dealer for the same reason, but i thought it was that the tires weren't gripping on dry asphalt, the dealer topped off the air and said it was fine, but the car kept doing the same thing and i didn't realize it was accelerating on it's own until what happened on 12/31/2012. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry. the contact stated that while stopped with a foot on the brake pedal, the rpms increased and the vehicle independently accelerated. the contact continued to depress the brake pedal but the vehicle would not respond. the contact crashed into the rear of the vehicle in front of her. the failure occurred two different times. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing and body repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated an engineer would come out and inspect the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 7,800. updated 02-13-13 *bf updated 02/14/13

I was driving at 60 mph on highway but suddenly the engine revved all the way to 7000 rpm and the car jerked violently. i put my foot off the accelerator but the engine still stays at 5000 rpm and doesn't go back down to normal. had to pull over to the shoulder with emergency light on. tried to get back on the highway but at 35 to 40 mph, the engine made loud revving noise and the rpm jumped to 7000 again. had to pull over again and call for a tow truck. *tr

P/o response ltr to toyota corp. re 2012 camrydate: december 26, 2013 - ...furthermore,my brother and i have stressed to everyone we have spoken with since our first contact on dec16, 2013 with toyota regarding these dangerous mechanical problems i.e., the unintended acceleration, steering pulling to the right as well as the offensive odor that occurs when the ac is turned on. ...no one will assist us until january 6, 2014...we cannot imagine that ceo [xxx]... would find it acceptable to wait three (3) weeks - until january 6, 2014- to first begin an investigation while being left with a defective and damaged toyota camry. [xxx]. did not respond to our phone call either. we located nov 16 2012 details and fwd to toyota corp: nov 16, 2012- at approximately 11:15pm on the 405s, all traffic was stopped by the police north of the skirball. we were standing still for about 10 minutes. suddenly, our car lunged forward due to unintended acceleration. as the car veered to the right, i managed, with great effort, to steer the car as we went into the lane to the right of us. after traveling more than 100 feet, i was finally able to get the car to come to a stop. thankfully, we did not hit and were not hit by passing police and fire vehicles. we also smelled something burning in our car for a couple of minutes. on november 17, 2012, we went into toyota service to report what had occurred the night before. we wanted toyota to know what had happened because it was very frightening and we were concerned about our safety. we also wanted to know how many other people had experienced this problem and how toyota had resolved this dangerous, safety problem. toyota service checked and responded that there was no recall for this unintended acceleration in the 2012 camry. unfortunately, we accepted that this was an isolated incident experienced only by us. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 toyota camry se. the contact stated that driving at various speeds and rapidly accelerating, the vehicle stalled. the contact also stated that the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the vehicle was down shifting and hesitating but there was no failure. the manufacturer was notified who informed the dealer that there was a problem with the vehicle. the failure mileage was 5,700. mah the consumer found at low speed it became necessary to accelerate rapidly, due to the fact, when the accelerator pedal was depressed down rapidly there would be absolutely no response as if the engine cut off. if the consumer released the pedal and depressed it again at a progressively slower rate, the engine would respond accordingly. the dealer stated it was normal. the dealer explained the hesitation was due to the vehicle trying to down shift. the consumer believed the fuel injection sensor lacked the capacity to adequately receive or transmit a signal to the fuel injectors under rapid acceleration. there was no engine response, until the consumer literally released and depressed the gas pedal again. updated 03/12/13 the consumer stated the traction control system was the cause of the problem. the traction system controlled braking force and engine output to the drive wheel when the sensor detected a wheel spin during acceleration or cornering. updated 03/19/13 the consumer stated another dealer confirmed his problem and the cause. the dealer stated the traction control system was cutting power to the engine. even with turning and acceleration, the traction system would cut power to the engine. the dealer informed the consumer there was nothing they could do to address the issue. updated 04/03/13
