The glare from the sticky dashboard is making the vehicle more dangerous to drive
Recently 'august 2019' i purchased a 2009 toyota camry on a 'cloudy day' for my son to drive to n.c. for college. he came home for an overnight visit and i noticed his dash was very shiny and had a horrible glare. the glare was so bad i would not allow him to drive the car due to this impairing his ability to see. i noticed on toyota's website there is a recall on the dash but read lots of complaints that toyota was not replacing them in a timely fashion and for only so many years. as you can see from the photo this is for sure a visibility hazard and my son or others could be killed due to inability to see.
Toyota is aware that they manufactured this car and others with a defective dashboard. they have already been sued for this. the melted dashboard causes a glare in the window making driving unsafe and people have been in accidents. plus, the goey dashboard may cause the airbags to fail. rather than recalling the defective cars and replacing the dashboards on all these cars, toyota chose to offer a 10 year warranty. first of all, i never received notification of this warranty, but it would not have made any difference if i would have, because the problem occurred in my car 2 months after the 10 year warranty expired. car brakes wear out, tires need replacing, dash boards are not suppose to melt! i imagine toyota expects the dashboards to melt in most cars after 10 years and this is why they offered a 10 year warranty. they can now profit from their own manufacturers defect.
My camry dashboard melted such that it is now reflective like a mirror or glass onto my front window. the glare on the front window is unsafe for clear viewing. this happened after the warranty expired on may of 2018. but, a safety issue caused by a melting of the dashboard should not have a limit to it's necessary repair by toyota. i have videos of the danger, but your only accepting jpgs below.
Dashboard melt - dash when heated by sun or temperature -melts and turns into a glossy glue consistance which reflects on windshield and prohibits sight thru the glare - prevents driver sight and safety paper sticks to it and so does any flying bugs, trash, or other objects it comes in contact with. you cannot see on coming traffic or navigate turns safely.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving, the driver's side sun visor detached and prevented the contact from viewing the road. the contact stated that the passenger side sun visor had previously detached and was replaced by him. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 39,000.
I own a 2009 toyota camry that has the sticky dashboard problem and causes glare on the windshield that causes unsafe operating. i have spoken with toyota and they have acknowledged there is a problem but will not fix the dashboard. attached is a picture of the windshield and there is a vehicle you can see in front but barely.
Melting dashboard become reflective hindering/blinding driver during daytime driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that the dashboard was melting and becoming very sticky and shiny. the glare from the sun reflected onto the dashboard, which obstructed the contact's view. in addition, while driving in the rain with the windshield wipers activated, the water remained on the windshield and the contact was unable to view the road. the contact called antioch toyota (located at 1817 auto center dr, antioch, ca 94509, (925) 778-4800) and was informed that the warranty was expired and would not cover the repair. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 198,000.
The driver visor droops down. it just recently started doing this. it blocks visibility when driving. it will not stay up. when i got into my car this evening it was down and would not stay in the up position.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving unknown speeds, the sun visor spontaneously rotated downwards and obstructed the contact's view of the windshield. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called the local dealer (bobby rahal toyota, 6711 carlisle pike, mechanicsburg, pa 17050, (888) 376-3831) and was informed that parts were not available, but could be ordered. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1809061540. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 58,000. *dt updated 10/29/18*jb
2009 camry hybrid melting dashboard. this is a safety issue as one can't see incoming traffic or pedestrians when driving into the sun. i have been in few close call incidents where i couldn't see pedestrians or traffic infront of me. please recall this problem with the melting/cracking dashboard.
The dashboard has melted and is sticky and shiny which has created an intense glare on the windshield making it very difficult to see some spots while driving. the shiny dashboard does not return to normal even in cooler temperatures, or if a sunshade is used. the shiny sticky goo like film can not be wiped away either.
I purchased a 2009 toyota camry on june 23, 2008. after a few years, the dashboard became soft and sticky. just this last summer, i noticed it melting on a hot sunny day. i looked into having it replaced. there was a warranty enhancement notification letter previously sent to me, which stated this type of known problem would be covered for up to 10 years since car was first placed in service. unfortunately, i didn't determine this was enough of a problem to me until june 28, 2018. i missed the warranty extension by 5 days. i contacted newbold toyota on june 29, 2018, and the service manager said that after the 10 years, there is nothing they can do, except to charge me for the repair. the repair was estimated at approx. $1,500 for the dashboard replacement. at first, i thought "oh well, i can live with this." but now the dashboard has melted so much that it now reflects sunlight into the windshield so badly that it is has become a safety hazard. it is very difficult to see through the windshield when driving towards the sun on a sunny day (even while wearing sunglasses). so the defective dashboard is now causing very hazardous driving condition. so i contacted the national toyota customer service center, and they said essentially the same thing as newbold toyota. there was nothing they can do now. since this design/material flaw has caused such a serious hazard when driving the car, and this is now a safety issue, i believe toyota should be held responsible and should pay for the repair to fix this safety issue. when i purchased this car, i had no idea the dashboard had an expiration date. if only i had noticed the melting a few days earlier they would have paid for the replacement. why does their responsibility to fix a defect/safety issue end after 10 years. i have attached photo to show reflection on windshield but blinding glare is much worse in person.
I was denied replacement of a melted dashboard because the extended warranty had expired (by 2 business days). the 2009 camry dashboard melting is a safety hazard. it casts a jarring glare onto the entire windshield and makes driving unsafe. visibility is compromised. someone is going to get hurt. this should not have been an extended warranty program. this should be a recall. injuries or worse are imminent. please act on behalf of consumers and establish a recall for toyota melting dashboards.
Glare from melted dashboard
The sun visor on the driver's side broke off. unable to block the low horizon sun from shining into the driver's face when driving towards the sun.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving in the rain, the windshield fogged up and impaired the contact's vision. the contact stated that the dashboard material became worn over time due to heat and affected the windshield. the dealer had not been contacted. the manufacturer stated that a special warranty had just expired; therefore, they could not assist. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Dashboard started melting. dashboard has become sticky, shiny and greasy. now sunlight reflects back on windshield glass, and reduces visibility of road. on bright sunny day, sunlight reflection on windshield makes it impossible to drive without covering dashboard.
I recently bought a used 2009 camry, with a melting dashboard. the car salesperson told me it's just cleaner, so of course i believed them. although, when i got home i read all about toyota's problem with melting dashboards. i am very upset with this company's interior manufacturing. there is an intense reflection on the windshield due to the sticky dashboard. this makes it hard to see while driving.
Sun visors are faulty design. heat (sun) cause expansion of the plastic joints to expand/contract eventually leading to failure. the visor hangs down blocking driver's vision. replacements cost $90 or more and the same problem exists because of faulty design.
Dashboard begins to melt when in sunlight. when hot to touch, hands will stick. first noticed when using a new sun visor. all we did was extend the visor towards bottom of windshield and picked up scratches. vehicle was stationary.
Sun visor sags. there was a service bulletin and toyota says we received it via mail. the car was purchased at a toyota dealer that went out of business in greenbrook nj. we took the car to dch and have not received any recall notifications. the driver side visor was falling down. we contacted them and they said it is out by 4 years yet we never received any notifications. we contacted them about not receiving it and they said we have the correct address. now we pay for all the recalls and service bulletins. the visor would be a visibility factor when line of site is interrupted. we had to fix at our cost of 104.00 for a plastic sun visor that had an obvious defect in the glue separated and it was not the fault of the owner.
The sunvisors for driver and passenger side fail down. they block the view when i am driving . it is dangerous
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving 5 mph, the contact noticed smoke emitting from the front passenger side door. the contact exited the vehicle. the fire department was not called and there was no fire report. there were no injuries. the contact drove the vehicle away from the scene. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v491000 (visibility). the approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
I purchased a used 2009 camry base model from the original owner. she notified me that the driver side visor is broken on the inside of the visor. it hangs down obstructing driver's view even when snapped into place. i took it to a shop to be fixed and they told me they have seen this on almost every 2009 camry and there is no way to fix it, only replace it at my own cost. this is a defect that should have been recalled.
I bought my 2009 toyota camry le 2.4 in 2011 and last year i started having problem with driver side sun visor, it started not to stay complete closed and started to stay open, i took the vehicle to the dealer, they said it needs to be replaced but i did not want to pay for it, now i am trying to see if this is a recall or manufacturer fault.
I am having an issue with the dashboard melting. the surface of the dashboard has become shiny and creates a glare on the windshield.
Rear window defroster has big air bubbles compromising visibility. also the i had replaced the passenger side visor 3 times for being broken when pulled down for use.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while the vehicle was parked, the front driver's side visor detached on the left corner and failed to close. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.
Our driver side visor becomes extremely floppy lately. we didn't know there was a recall on models similar to our 2009 toyota camry. it's barely out of warranty now and it's a big safety concern. we have owned many cars, and not one has a visor issue, please help!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v689000 (visibility); however, the part needed for the repair was not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the part was on backorder. the vehicle was not repaired. in addition, while driving various speeds, the dashboard would melt due to the sun's reflection. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
The sun visor fell in a perfect position blocking my view while traveling through a busy intersection i had to stop to adjust, the visor it falls all the time toyota refused to repair or fix it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving 45 mph, the passenger side sun visor fractured without warning. the contact stated that the driver side sun visor made a clicking noise and was close to fracturing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.
Passenger mirror stop responding after few seconds. when i use mirror switch to driver side again and back a can use ( up, down , right, left) for a few seconds and it stop again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while operating the vehicle, the driver side sun visor fell down into the line of sight of the driver creating a visibility hazard. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that a spring failed, which caused the failure. no further information was available. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000.
My visor broke for no apparent reason. visors typically don't come off of cars that are even much older than my 2009 toyota. this happened while i was driving and adjusting my visibility from the sun.
This is for a 2009 toyota camry se 4 door sedan. the driver side visor becomes completely loose and rotates and falls down just like one would bring it down to block sunlight. this hampers the vision of the driver.
In 2015 i received several recall notices from toyota, inc. the first of several were the sun visors defect. although mechanicsville toyota fixed it when they fixed the engine consumption problem in 2015, it currently has the same problem as the visor on the driver's side doesn't stay up/defective. the second, the dashboard area will crack due to sun exposure which it has tiny cracks. however, the major was recall on, engine oil consumption. mechanicsville toyota, 6546 mechanicsville tpke. mechanicsville, va fixed the problem, however, the problem has returned. this defect will cause the engine to lock if oil consumption isn't checked and added regularly.
Moonroof exploded while in the middle of the san mateo bridge. immediately heard wind noise coming from the moonroof (the shade fortunately was drawn). i saw no obvious gravel on the bridge and no vehicles in my immediate vicinity that might account for it. thought for a second that something dropped off a landing plane and realized that something like that would have easily punched through the shade. i examined the damage less than ten minutes later when i arrived at my destination. saw shattered glass and a hole that was almost centered. found no marks on the top side of the shade to indicate an object hitting. the edges of the hole tilted upwards. temperature at the time is estimated to be low 60s, sunny, and no discernible wind. inside temp was set at 67 or 68 and the fan was set on the low 2 setting. my husband examined the car when i returned home about 3 1/2 hours later. he searched through the shattered glass and found no objects. he tested the tilted edge to see what flexibility it had when i asked if air flow might have distorted the opening in the glass. it was quite stiff and he said that was unlikely. he (phd in engineering) concluded that there was no evidence of an object and commented the moonroof appeared as if it shattered upwards due to structural stress. i have a number of photos of the damage, one taken 10 minutes afterwards, the rest when i returned home. the toyota representative is holding on to the rock theory. *tr
I purchased a new 2009 toyota camry se, after owning ten toyota vehicles since 1978. i still own four today! i have never experienced anything like this issue in another car. in 2014-2015 (estimated) my entire dash board became sticky, as if i had poured oil on it. today it releases a thick sticky residue onto the front windshield when parked in the sun. this makes the dash impossible to wipe... as towels, sponges, even leaves, etc., get stuck to it (see pics). i can't drive my car without first wiping the inside of the windshield each time it is parked in the sun, or this residue makes it opaque (see pics...after wiping it). this situation is exacerbated when driving towards the sun (see pics) and is a safety issue!! i'm concerned how the deteriorated condition of my dash affects the deployment of the passenger airbag or if it still even operates correctly? on 8/16/19, i discovered that toyota extended its warranty to ten years from the original purchase date. mine was 7/29/09...putting me only two weeks out of their 10-year warranty coverage. toyota corporate and my dealership told me they could not offer any assistance in my case ("1 day or 1 mile over warranty and we won't help"). when challenged, toyota could not confirm letters were mailed to all affected owners, only that an effort was made to send letters to some owners in 2015. multiple models over several years are involved. i spent 8 hours on the phone appealing their decision, without success. a new dashboard costs $2600.00 (installed)!! i reported this issue here because it is a manufacturing/safety issue resulting from toyota's use of sub par materials...like defective windshield wipers...if you can't see out of your windshield at freeways speeds because of the glare from your dashboard, or the residue stuck on your windshield...you are at risk of an accident. please contact me if you have questions?
The dashboard on my camry has become very sticky and shiny causing a bright glare on the windshield. it is difficult to see past the glare during night and day driving. it has been difficult to drive because the glare is distracting and blocks the front view of the driver.
Toyota camry 2009. when dash heats up it starts shining and cause glare on windshield, it causes obstructive vision to the driver's visibility of the roadway. in addition, the material on the dashboard would become very sticky as if it were melting. *tr
The dashboard of my car is melting and becoming very shiny. the dashboard is so shiny that i have to wear sunglasses to drive because of the excessive glare on my eyes. *tr
Sticky dashboard and glare makes driving dangerous. *tr
The dashboard to my camry is very sticky. i live in the state of florida and the glare on the wind shield caused by the melting dashboard is so bad i have to lean to my right while driving in order to see better. this is definitely a safety issue and i need some information asap on getting this problem resolved. it's a shame that toyota does not correct this issue. how many accidents/deaths have to occur before something is done!?
Beginning in summer 2014, the 2009 toyota camry le dashboard has gradually become very shiny. the shininess now produces a glare on the windshield and makes it difficult to see through the windshield at times. in addition, the shiny area of the dashboard has become increasingly sticky with a tacky feel to it. no commercial products have been used to clean the windshield, and car is under cover the majority of the time. *tr
Like many others i have read about online my dashboard is melting and sticking causing a constant glare in my windshield making it hard to see in front of me. i strongly believe this is an ongoing and dangerous issue that should be addressed by the automakers. *tr
Driver's side sun visor suddenly "flopped" down impairing vision while driving. will not hold in the upper or fully extended position. hangs directly in my line of sight. *tr
My dash board is sticky and melted looking. the glare it causes makes it very difficult to see. if i don't wear sunshades i cant see. i called toyota to make a complaint and they said they can't do anything because it is out of warranty. also my passenger side window will only work occasionally. *tr
