Experience involuntary acceleration of 2008 toyota camry. the car was traveling on a highway. i try to breaks but the car continued until it hit a medium. this was a front on collision. the airbags did not deploy. the car was totaled
My wife was driving home one day and told me that the car was shaking violently. when i drove it, it shook but was not too bad. i thought it was a tire balancing issue. then it happened. i was driving one day on the freeway, the car started shaking and the abs was activated! i stopped the car on the road and i could smell the brake smoke. the the last straw, i'm driving home one day and the brakes seized i was able to get the car to the dealer who told me the brake actuator was the cause and it was common for the year/make/model but there was no recall and the cost of repair was $3k. three thousand dollars for something that is "common". after having my car for 3 days, toyota agreed to pay half of the costs, so it still cost $1500 to repair, plus $100 for a brake job, though i had a brake job 6 months old! like many many others, our 2008 toyota camry has and continues to experience major issues affecting the safe operation of the vehicle, including but not limited to brakes abs activating on its own, brakes seizing, premature brake pad/rotor wear, dashboard lights not working, car mats, brake pedal, sun visors, dash board melting, motor mount breaking for no reason, dashboard gauges not working (speedometer/odometer/fuel/temperature etc), cruise control working intermittently where it turns off by itself, door panels coming loose, speakers stop working properly. i could go on, but i think you get the picture. though we've enjoyed owning toyotas in the past, we've owned this one for almost this one for almost 11 years. and though we're looking to get a new car soon, i'm fairly certain that because of the issues and more importantly the corporate treatment by toyota regarding issues with their product, this may our last one. the nhtsa should encourage toyota to do whatever is necessary to fix these issues before they become fatal.
Abs lights comes on, brakes lights come on, check engine light, the milage hand stop working and the air wont get cold when this happens.

The crash happened in a parking lot on march 19th, 2016. i had entered into the parking spot, by turning right. the car had come to a complete stop and my foot was on the brake pedal. suddenly i heard a loud revving noise and before i could even react to it, the car had jumped on to the walkway of the building. since i had stopped, my foot was on the brake pedal and even though i was pressing on it really hard, the car didn't stop. it slowed down a little bit for a fraction of a second, but then accelerated itself again, jumped ahead once more, went through the awning of a business suite in the building and hit a light post. the airbags didn't deploy. the car was totaled. as, i had turned right to enter into the parking spot, the steering wheel was still turned to the right and the car turned right and went parallel to the cinder block wall of the building, instead of going straight and hitting the wall, which could have turned fatal for me and my child. this vehical had been recalled earlier. i had received the recall notice from toyota in early 2010 for "potential floor mat interference with accelerator pedal (safety recall 90l)" and had it repaired in may 2010, from a local toyota service center.
When slowing down on intersection on the stop sign with the intention to completely stop, i pressed the brake pedal and removed my foot completely from accelarator pedal. car engine suddenly revs up and engine rpm shoots up, i need to press brake really very hard to stop the car to go into the middle of intersection or eventually car wiill roll into intersection and i had to cross the intersection to avoid collision with vehicles coming on cross intersection. this has happened at least 5-6 times. i took the car to the mechanic and he ran the diagnostics test but could not find any thing wrong. i took it to the toyota dealership in freehold he suggested to remove the unsecured floor mat, which i did but still having the same issue. this issue was experienced yesterday also 2 times.

I own a 2008 toyota camry and was told today that this make model and year cars have been having a excessive oil consumption problem with the engine. the dealership does not know where the oil is going and that i should watch this to make sure i do not run out of oil and burn up the engine. i have concerns about this since i travel almost 100 miles a day and bought this car for safety and longevity no matter how many miles are involved. my children and i could be left stranded which is a concern in this day and age. from what i am told this is an ongoing problem with this engine why is there no recall? keep in mind this is the same year of the whole accelerator pedal recall. *tr
when pulling into a gravel parking space at less than 5mph. car suddenly accelerated full throttle, jumped a concrete parking stop, became partially airborne on the right side , coming down in a depression after 25 ft. brake was fully depressed through event. visual inspection and manual check after incident showed nothing impeding either gas pedal or brake. mats firmly attached. we have photos of the acceleration tracks and the ditch where it landed. damage to fascia, bumper, air dam. alignment, possible tire damage. est. $800 - $1200. our complaint is car sat at dealer for 2 months deemed unsafe to drive. the outcome was that nothing was recorded on the black box and vehicle passed inspections on a lift. therefore even though this was an unintended acceleration issue toyota will do nothing. recommendation from both consumer reports and edmunds is a brake override should be installed. when this was mentioned they said no the car doesn't need it. one of our complaints is toyota motor sales u.s.a. took 2 months to resolve this. they didn't return phone calls or notify the dealer of any results. dealer stated toyota wouldn't let them work on the car and it was listed unsafe to drive. during this 2 months we had to rent a car out of pocket (insurance paid 2 weeks). over $1000. both my wife and i feel very lucky this incident didn't happen on a busy highway or next to a solid wall. if it had there was a good chance we could have been injured and the damage much worse. dealing with both the dealer and toyota u.s.a. was frustrating and pointless. we have picked up the car and are considering trading it in but are shocked to find in 2 years it has deprecated by $8000! this has been a complete nightmare and a monetary loss as well. to at least get the brake override would be some satisfaction. Slowly entered rite aid parking lot at 5-10 mph. turned right into a parking spot. lightly tapped the brake and the accelerator went faster than if you were driving on the highway. car jumped the concrete bumper onto the walkway. had to cut the wheel all the way to the right to avoid hitting the brick wall of the store and drove into the parking lot guard rail. car went into a high speed skid and when it came out of the skid was still accelerating at a very high speed and had to turn the ignition off for it to stop. there were skid marks and smoke. air bag did not go off. waiting to hear from toyota with a date to have the car inspected. would like for toyota to buy back my car which we have spent top dollar having toyota maintain it for the last five years, which included the 100,000 mile service just a week or two before the accident. do not feel safe driving this car again. please advise. *tr

We received a recall letter on our 2008 camry due gas pedal problem. we took the camry in for the recall. the dealer shaved the pedal down. this is the fix for the run away camry's. the fix is very sloppy and makes the car uncomfortable to drive due the pedal being so short now. i call toyota they said that was the approved fix. they did give me a case number and said someone would call in 3 days. the fix seems to be a lot more unsafe now than before. *tr

I'm a school counselor. i was going home from work at about 3:50 pm yesterday, 4-6-2010, going south on rt. 222, about 4 miles north of the denver exit. i went to pass another car and pushed hard on my 2008 toyota camry's accelerator. it locked and kept accelerating as i pulled into the passing lane. i took my foot off the pedal all the way, maybe a half a foot, but all i heard was the engine racing as i saw myself getting closer to the car in the lane in front of me. i panicked and began to stomp down on the pedal several times, i figure i was above eighty mph by then. as i was trying to decide how to steer around everyone i hammered down on the pedal again and it stopped. the car accelerated ok and i carefully used the gas until i got the car home. i then called the new holland toyota dealership who did the recall fix on 3-27-2010, told doug what just happened. i never had the car do this before! i always thought it had a good smooth ride. doug gave me the 800 number to call toyota to file for a case manager. i'm very upset and afraid to use this car for me or my family. i feel like it's unbelievable that it happened to me but it did. what is being done about this terrible situation? please help me with what i should do next. *tr

I own a 2008 toyota camry that was one of the vehicles recalled. my dealer did provide me with a rental car for three days and repaired the gas pedal on 2/05/10. today - while out on the highway and starting up a small hill, when i touched the gas pedal - it started revving up really loud, i immediately did what i have been told to do - put the brake on hard and finally the revving stopped. the car then started to drive ok again. i am concerned that -- had i not put the braked on hard - the car would have gone out of control. this is not a normal reaction ! i did call my dealer and plan to take the car back in tomorrow to have it checked again. i travel a great deal and am worried about my safety. i am reporting this in case the unforeseen should happen. also - to date - there has been no resolution to the car mat issue. updated 03/09/10 *bf *tr
I drive a 2008 four door toyota camry le. i have been worried by a hesitation in excelling and slowing when i press and release the gas. i mostly notice this when going between 20 & 45 mph but it has happened at higher speeds (just less often). primarily at abt 35 mph while holding a steady pressure on the gas you feel the car randomly decel, or feel sluggish, but then when you release the gas you feel the engine pull faster even though your foot is off the gas. the rpm even jumps. i called toyota in cedar rapids, ia (i don't like the one in cedar falls, they forgot to put oil in my car once when doing an oil change & denied responsibility), the cedar rapids car lot rejected my request for service- stating there is a recall and i will be notified by toyota when a solution has been found. i then took my car to the place i purchased it (owned by the same people who own the toyota in cedar falls), they looked it over and abt 30 minutes later told me nothing was wrong with it, & that they didn't notice anything (this problem is hard to miss) that they cleaned the fuel filter & that should solve it. i drove home & the problem right from my exit persisted. now hearing abt the concerns with toyota worry i am being ignored on a potentially dangerous issue with my vehicle?... *tr
