2007 toyota camry. consumer writes in regards to sudden acceleration. *smd the consumer believed the incident was due to an electrical defect. *jb

I just got my 2007 camry hybrid back after the "check vsc system" warning light came on this past week. i called my toyota dealer to have it checked out while i had an oil change and tire rotation done as well as another recall dealing with, i believe, was a brake reservoir issue. earlier in the week i called toyota corporate to ask them about this warning i got and they asked about the numerous warning lights that came on when this happened on my instrument panel. and recommended i get it checked out. i left the vehicle the next day and later in the day they came back and told me the items were done, what the exception of the vsc system warning light. they said that my actuator was faulty. they said that they had called toyota about it and were awaiting a call back from them. they called me later in the day and said that toyota was willing to do the repair, free of charge, as a "one time only" deal. i never made a big deal out of this situation, never complaining. ironically, a warning light dealing with my tire pressure that has never came off is gone as well as those other lights including the (!), abs, the "skidding car", etc. among others also, my camry has over 233,000 miles, no where near a warranty type repair! this must be a problem that toyota is dealing with, but are keeping it on the "down low" to avoid a recall and another public embarrassment. i am also forwarding this to the ntsb and out local tv station. i am sure this is happening all over the country and hope that no one is adversely affected by this obvious factory defect. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle accelerated without warning. in order to stop the vehicle, the contact shifted into park, which caused the vehicle to accelerate more. the ignition had to be turned off before the vehicle came to a sudden stop. the vehicle was towed to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was unavailable. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 157,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that while parking the vehicle suddenly accelerated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,000.

Abs light came on, speedometer. odometer, and a/c stopped working. problem continues intermittently. internet research indicates that this is a widely known problem with this year model and repairs are extremely expensive. seeking repair through recall. this is a safety issue. please advise if recall has been or will be initiated. thank you. *tr

Several warning lights on the dash illuminated, including the stability control and brake lights, along with a warning on the dic that said "check vsc." there was also an intermittent loss of braking ability/brake pedal pressure. *tr

When driving brake and abs light comes on and speedometer goes to 0 mph also ac stop working. went to a toyota dealer they say it's the battery. tested the battery got 12v, told them i'm not stupid. toyota forum shows a lot of people having the same problem. what toyota waiting for to place a recall for this problem that can be fatal ?

My wife was driving her 2007 toyota camry when the "check vsc" error code came on at which time the brakes became very mushy. we took it to a mechanic the code showed that the brake actuator is failing. so now we will have to pay over $2,000 to get this common problem fixed. *tr

the same year and model toyota camry has already had a recall for the same problem in the hybrid version for the exact same part. while driving the car the speedometer goes to zero, the tachometer needle goes up and down like crazy, the ac cuts off and the temperature sensor cuts off. the parking brake light and the abs failure light come on the dashboard showing the brake system has failed. the cars does stop but with hesitation. i have no way to know if the brake light are working during the failure so i am concerned i am going to get rear ended because the driver behind me won't know i am stopping. there is no way to know if this issue will get worse and there will be a point where it will not stop. i called toyota and opened a case #1407190530 and was told that they had no such issues showing in their database. i told them it shows up thousands of times on google and was basically told, who are you going to trust thousands of people or toyota? i asked him to check for any notes on the model dealing with the abs ecm or the abs actuator. he told me they had none and that i had to bring it to the dealer and have them check it. this seems like a great scam for them, the car gives a code u0073 showing the problem is the abs, so the dealer gets to charge a couple of hundred dollars to run tests to then tell you the 3 inch square part cost $4000 to replace because they are the only ones that make it. you buy the part it cost them $50 to make for $4000 with labor or your don't have a car. having read through hundred of posts online from people with the exact same issue, with the exact same part i feel that there should be a recall on these cars. toyota has a bean counter mentality where it has figured out the number of acceptable dead and how much legal fees they can pay before it is worth fixing an issue. deaths before the loss of profit should be the toyota slogan. *tr

, tachometer, abs breaks, engine temperature gage, outside temperature gage all sporadically fail.

When driving brake and abs light comes on and speedometer goes to 0 mph also ac stop working. *tr

The vehicle was turning into a parking space with the brake on. suddenly the vehicle lunged forward and went through the glass front of a bank building, landing in the vestibule. the accident data provided by the inspector hired by toyota clearly shows that at the time the brake pedal was depressed. when the brake was applied the acceleration increased from .78 to 2.27 and the engine rpms increased from 400 to 2000. when the brake was released at the time of the accident, the acceleration rate returned to .78 and the rpms dropped to 1600. toyota says they found no mechanical problems with the car and insists that both the accelerator and brake were pressed at the same time, which was not the case. this was not the first time the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly, but at the time we didn't realize that there might be a problem with the car. we feel toyota doesn't want to take responsibility for this issue and are concerned that this might happen again. as a result, my wife is now afraid to ride in the car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle independently accelerated at full speed. as a result, the vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant, stop sign and a bench. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to locate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,446.

For two years now, the "check vsc" light will come on intermittently. it has happened both when i am in motion as well as stationary. at that time, several other lights on the cluster such as the abs light will come on. the brakes become very sluggish but i can ultimately stop the car. the warning lights will eventually go out, usually after i turn off the car and restart it. once the warning lights are off, the brakes work normally. the brakes are now making a barking sound when depressed. my mechanic says i need a new abs system which will cost thousands of dollars. *tr

On june 5, 2014 i was driving my 07 camry at approximately 40 mph when the abs, brake and vsc warning lights came on. it took more effort to engage the brakes in the car and i drove the car to keyes toyota. the vehicle was checked and several codes were identified. c012 rear speed sensor rh circuit, c0215 rear speed sensor lh circuit, c1331 open circuit in left front circuit, u0073 control module bus off. service writer found that the abs actuator was shorting out intermittently and advised that the vehicle may not be safe to drive. he advised that the vehicle was not covered under warranty and that the repair would cost approximately $2,750 plus tax. i was not able to pay for the repair at this time. on 6-9-14 contact was made to toyota and they advised that there were no recalls or tsb's for the abs system on non hybrid 07 camry even though the symptoms experienced and the repair codes were similar. toyota declined assistance and advised that if they did do a recall i could submit for possible reimbursement of the repair. in researching this i found over 125 abs related complaints reported to nhtsa. in addition there are numerous complaints on the internet with persons who have experienced the very same symptoms some of which have almost been involved in collisions. this seems to be the very same issue that the 07 hybrid camry was recalled for and yet nothing is being done for the non hybrid version. this to me is a safety concern that should be recalled. *tr

I purchased my 2007 toyota camry in july 2006, new. at approximately 50k miles, when turning corners my engine sounded like it was stalling, the accelerator did not work, and a "low engine fuel" warning came on. i took my car into the dealership and was assured by the dealership that there was nothing wrong with my car. this same incident occurred at least 7 times since and each time i was assured by the dealership that there was nothing wrong with my car. my car was still under factory warranty, and then my extended warranty when these incidents first occurred. i'm now at 108k miles. for the past two weeks while driving and turning corners, the "low engine fuel" warning displayed briefly. since the dealership previously assured me that nothing was wrong with my car, and my car had 2k more miles before my next oil change, i continued to drive my car. then on sunday, june 25th i decided to have auto zone take a look at my car. to my utter surprise, there was absolutely no oil on the stick when the auto zone guy checked my oil levels. i purchased two quarts of oil and the auto zone guy put the oil in my car. the following saturday i took my car to my usual toyota dealership and explained my experience. the service advisor informed me that my piston is probably worn out and oil is probably leaking into my engine, which would be a $4k repair cost. as i stated to the service advisor, at any moment my car can conk out while driving, because oil is leaking into my engine and the only time a warning appears is when i turn corners. if i'm driving on a highway where speeds are in excess of 80 mph, and my car conks out because oil is leaking into my engine, that is a huge safety concern. a service technician who overheard our conversation stated, "yeah, the engines on those cars are a piece of junk." toyota refuses financial responsibility. *tr

I bought this car from a small dealership with around 149700 miles 2weeks later a vsc message came on with a couple of lights after investing online found out is a manufacture problem and then after further check found out it was taken in to toyota to verify that same problem i got so i called them they told me is the brake actuator was bad and the cost is 3500 thank you *tr

The car hesitates to stop at times, isles up and acts as it wants to take off, and jerks as i'm driving it. it shoes on the dash to check vsc system. *tr

I have a 2007 camry le and in 2013 i noticed the abs and break lights on the dashboard come on intermittently, tachometer bounces up and down and speedometer shows 0. this kept happening intermittently. this is a huge safety issue, since when driving on the highway, if it doesn't show the correct reading on the speedo meter and the breaks may not function as expected which might lead to accidents. i got it checked(diagnostics test) at a toyota dealership and they indicated that the abs actuator unit is faulty and needs to be replaced and the cost would be around $2000. i called toyota to complain since this is an electrical/electronic component and nothing really related to ware and tear, they indicated there are no recalls for abs actuator assembly. i looked online and found that camry hybrids 2007 have the same problem and toyota is providing "warranty extension" for owners who experienced this problem. i believe the same warranty extension for abs actuator should apply to 2007 camry non hybrid models also. seeking nhtsa help in this regard. *tr

I started my car and the "check vcs system" light as well as other indicator lights came on. after a few seconds they went away. i proceeded to drive down the street as normal. about 30 seconds into my drive, traveling at approximately 15mph, the "check vcs system" light as well as other indicator lights came on again. when i applied the brakes right after the indicator lights came on i discovered that i had no power brakes. i had to press on the pedal extremely hard for the car to come to a stop. this is a very serious and dangerous situation and i hope you can investigate this problem with toyota. *tr

While my son was traveling to school the vsc light came on the warning panel. at that time the brakes were hard to operate and took a few seconds to reengage and the brakes locked up bringing the car to a skidding stop. after a minute the lights went off and he was able to travel again, but the same incident happened again the next morning taking my other kids to school when the roads were icy! this is a situation where someone will be killed behind faulty equipment being ignored by toyota on the 2007 camry hybrids. *tr

Like many others with this particular car (hybrid), check vsc system warning came on along with many warning lights on the car and the brakes stopped functioning properly. instead of normal breaking, it now takes pushing them all the way down sometimes. toyota dealer quotes $2600 for the same repair (part replacement) that lots of other people are griping about online? especially since the part is only available from toyota. the car does not feel safe to drive under these conditions. there are many complaints about the very same problem. for example: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/feds-investigate-braking-problems-in-toyota-camry-hybrid-012814.html here's 7 pages of gripes: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/105-camry-hybrid/401450-2007-tch-check-vsc-system-code-c1391.html here's 11 more pages on a website someone created especially for this particular issue: https://www.checkvscsystem.com/guestbook.php and there's many more. please do something. toyota's official stance is to claim "no recall" and leverage being the only source of the part to make a killing off of this (apparently) mass problem (for this car). *tr

The car experienced sudden rapid acceleration and went through the wall into my kitchen causing over 14000 dollars worth of damage and 8100 worth of damage to the car. *tr

My speedometer stopped working, abs brake light stays on, rpm meter dances, and air condition pops on and off, all occurred at the same time. by reading many posts throughout the internet, it seems to be happening to several 2007 camry's to 2009. appears to be the abs control module? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck, causing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly. the brake pedal was depressed repeatedly however, the vehicle did not stop accelerating until the contact placed her foot under the accelerator pedal. the vehicle was able to resume normally and was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

I was driving my car with my mother in it taking her to a doctor appointment. i was entering onto i-95 northbound from route 273 trying to merge into traffic, i was almost on the highway. the car suddenly accelerated and catapulted us across 4 lanes of traffic. the police said i hit another car, spun around and ended up facing the oncoming traffic stopped only by the guardrail. my mom had to be extricated from the car. i recall applying the brakes and the car not stopping, i also tried to put on my left turn signal but that would not work either. i later learned that the 2007 camry (nearly 4 million of them) had been recalled for sudden acceleration problems. i was told by toyota that nothing was wrong with my car but there is no way i intentionally went across 4 lanes of interstate highway traffic. really??? my car was totaled. my mother was injured and was hospitalized from that day until mid december. it was a very difficult time. i would like for toyota to take responsibility for their malfunctioning product and do the proper justifiable, compensatory thing. the other driver was injured and i believe her car was totaled as well. *tr

Driving my camry hybrid this morning on the way to work, stopped by gas station for snacks and drink, brake system completely failed upon backing out of my stall. brakes would not work going forward or in reverse. "check vsc system" message appeared on my dash. looked it up in owners manual. told me brakes worked but to drive slow. immediately drove home. had to stop at multiple four way stops, nearly wrecked twice. vehicle is very dangerous. luckily no one was hurt or killed. this is a major safety issue that toyota needs to resolve! turns out it is my abs accumulator, toyota wants $2500 to fix. i want toyota to fix it for free since it is a safety system malfunction on a low mileage vehicle. *tr

I had my rear brakes installed at hollywood toyota in october of 2013. as i left the dealership once the job was complete, my abs light, the brake light came on, my speed odometer stopped working along with my ac which started blowing hot air. i took the car back the following day and got the runaround. the toyota mechanic said it was the alternator since it was new, and it was giving to much amps. i immediately took the car back to the place the alternator was put in. the problem still existed after going back and forth with the problem. my service tech [xxx] said i would have to pay to have a diagnostic test done on the car. of course i got mad! when i bought the car in i had no problems with the vehicle. the sunday before my last visit to hollywood toyota, it started raining, which caused my windows to fog up inside and me driving in a ditch because of poor visibility. not from the outside, but from the inside everything became fogging in the interior of the car, where i either had to make contact with a car in front of me or go off into the ditch to avoid an accident from whipping the window trying to see in front of me. when, i saw hollywood toyota not wanting to except responsibility for the actions it has caused! i contacted toyota corporate and they in turn allowed me to take the car in for another diagnostic without cost. after leaving the dealership, the problem was no better then i took it in. but in addition to me taking it in. i went online and saw i was not the only one who had problem with the abs, brake light style coming on along with the speedometer not working. after dang near pulling what hair i have left out, i am reaching out to you to help eliminate this problem before a major accident occur and lives are lost, because someone else who's ac may not be working on the account of the electrical system failing would be a tragedy. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

About two days ago, i was driving and my instrument panel started doing some crazy stuff. the brake light and abs light came on, and my temp gauge, rpm, and odometer started fluctuating. this lasted about 30-45 seconds the first time. since then it happens intermittently every time i'm driving and it lasts a couple of minutes each time. i was already scheduled to go in for an oil change today, so i had the service department at my local dealer check out this problem also. the tech first quoted a $53 diagnostic fee, but called me back a couple of hours later to say that they need a more extensive diagnostic process, which would increase the fee to $99. she also said that i needed brakes and a battery ($202 front brakes+$118 battery+$89 brake fluid replace). about an hour later, she called me back and gave me the devastating news that my abs actuator/skid control computer needed to be replaced. the cost was $1686 for the part, and the total with labor would be $2035. this did not include my $40 oil change, battery, and breaks. nevertheless, i opted to wait on the $2000 abs issue. i went to pick up my car and was actually charged $148 for the diagnostic fee. essentially, i paid $199 for an oil change and for them to diagnose a problem that they already knew to be a common camry problem. i would have never purchased a toyota if i had known that this was a common problem. also this is a toyota specific part, so it's not like you can shop around for a deal. i have to pay this ridiculous amount of money because i don't want my children riding in an unsafe car. i'm so disgusted right now. *tr

Vsc warning on dash, check engine light, traction control light, and general warning (triangle with exclamation). acceleration seemed stiffer than normal, thought smelled something burning. at dealer for diagnostics. have reported need to replace transmission computer ($872.09 total) and possibly the engine computer (trans. + engine = 2233.35 total). 2007 camry xle, approx. 64,000 mi. purchased 10/18/2006. there have been at least three recalls for the 2007 camry line. should these repairs be covered by toyota? should i have the car evaluated by transmission specialist, such as aamco? *tr

While driving at speed 45 coming to brake car slides before braking its like the care doesn't want to stop and speedup i had the car for only 3 months i don't know what to do about the situation autojocks middlebury ct only gave me a 60 day war this vehicle i need to know what to do.this vehicle does not appear to be safe. *tr

Back during the recall i had my car serviced at the toyota station (2010) for the accelerator issue they were having. i am still having this problem. the difference i can still fee the engine revving up and the car feels as if it is going to take off however the car stays the same speed. basically when the engine revs up i am not able to hit the gas or break. it's like the car has a mind of it's own and within about 20 seconds of it revving up then you can feel it literally let stop revving up and i have control again of the speed. *tr

The engine was making a rattling noise, especially at start up and acceleration. i took the car to the dealer and was informed that the engine needs to be replaced and that the car is unsafe to drive, as the engine might seize up. fortunately, i caught it before that happened. toyota has a service bulletin out on this issue t-sb-0094-11; they knew there is a problem but never notified vehicle owners and the local dealer never performed the inspection test called for in the bulletin. in addition, there have been a number of complaints filed on this with nhtsa and hundreds more posted on the internet. there are two safety issues: engine failure while driving and toyota's disregard for safety, by not informing owners of the issue. *tr

I was slowly pulling into the parking space on my right in a private parking lot. with my right foot on the brake, almost totally in the parking space, all of a sudden my vehicle lunged forward on its own -- while my steering wheel was in a very slight right turn motion the car hit the light pole to my right of the parking space. the vehicle continued to accelerate as it rested on the light pole. with my foot still on the brake i shifted out of drive, into reverse, then into park and turned the ignition off.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 110 mph. the contact shifted into neutral and the vehicle decelerated to 45 mph. the contact then shifted into park and the vehicle was brought to a stop. the contact stated that by shifting into park, the engine was destroyed. the contact sustained injuries to the hands and knee from gripping the steering wheel and trying to stop the vehicle by abruptly applying the brakes. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer for diagnostics and was advised that the dealer could not determine a failure. a toyota specialist also inspected the vehicle and also was unable to determine a failure. the failure mileage was 68,000.

My 2007 toyota camry is experiencing electrical problems. the speedometer goes to zero, the brake light and abs light comes on and the gauges go haywire. the problem last for a few minutes at a time. this is dangerous as i can't tell how fast i'm driving. the tire pressure light stays on as well. no codes come up in the diagnostic testing. i have taken it to several mechanics and i've spent lots of time and money to find out what's wrong to no avail. i don't think i'll never buy another toyota. it's funny the problem began as i am about to make the last payment. *tr

When driving on the no 1 lane (by the carpool lane), an suv crossed the double yellow lines and rear ended my left side at approximate 40mph. my passengers were shaken up while i was taken to the er. i did noticed that my airbags did not deploy. after the accident i did some searching and came to find out that airbags for this particular model do not deploy!!! not to mentioned that prior to this finding, i had taken my car back to the dealer for an accelerator issue. also pending is the sun visor recall as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that when driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly accelerate without any warnings. the contact mentioned that the only way she could stop the vehicle was by turning off the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 83,500 and the current mileage was 83,700. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that while braking to a stop, the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. the contact applied the brake constantly in order to stop the vehicle. on the second recurrence of the failure, the contact had to turn the engine off to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed, but the technician was unable to generate a failure code. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 85,000. updated 7/22/13 *cn

Vehicle started from parked condition. as operator tapped the gas pedal lightly to take it out of parked condition, the vehicle suddenly had a very high speed causing loss of control and the vehicle hit a house. apparently it caused a open throttle condition. pressing brake only aggravated the condition (adding more speed) . this happened with an experienced driver with over 10 years of driving record and 0 incident (not even a parking ticket). all earlier recall were done by dealer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact's wife stated that while applying the brakes, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into two other vehicles. the vehicle still had not stopped and proceeded to crash into the curb, sidewalk and finally a guard rail. a police report was filed of the incident. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the vehicle was taken to a local auto body repair shop where an engineer that was sent by the manufacturer inspected the vehicle. the engineer advised that the vehicle was operating as designed. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 26,134. ...updated 07-15-13 *bf updated 07/19/2013 *js

I have a 2007 toyota camry.. i have had my recalls fixed. but now it is doing the same thing again.. the other day my brakes would not hold i thought i was going to hit the car in the front of me and my child was in the car with me... then when i start to take off it sounds like that it is trying to go into gear. and it revs up and i have took it in to dealership and they cant seem to find out what is wrong with it and of course i am at the end of my warranty. the other day it would barley pull up a hill. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact was driving approximately 15 mph attempting to make a turn and while the brakes were engaged there was an unexpected acceleration causing the contact to crash into another vehicle. there were no injuries. a police report was filed. the front end of the vehicle sustained damages. the contact planned to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test and to be repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

Sudden unintended acceleration on august 25th 2011 at approximately 1:00 pm, my dad was driving to garvey ranch park located at (781 s orange ave, monterey park, ca 91755) as part of his daily routine. he had already pulled into the parking lot and was getting ready to park his car facing north bound. all of a sudden the car accelerated out of nowhere and hoped the parking curb still facing northbound. in order to avoid any casualties and prevent hitting any of the children near the playground, he was able to steer the car and made a u-turn at about 150 degrees. at this point he was facing south bound of the parking lot and the car continued to accelerate at high speeds. his car then hopped the curb on the south side of the parking lot. once the car hopped the parking curb on the south side, it continued to hop over a couple of raised concrete blocks that delineate a path onto the hillside just south of the parking lot. due to the steepness of the hill, it prevented the car from going any further and the car crashed in between two trees located on the hillside. we had already taken the car to longo toyota due to the acceleration recall back on march 13 2010. i couldn't believe the car still had mechanical issues after we had it serviced it for the recall and was glad that my dad did not sustain a very serious injury. the car is available for inspection if an nhtsa official would like to inspect the car. *tr
