Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2007 Toyota Camry

The car has been having lots of transmission problems. at low speeds it shifted back and forth between gears even when maintaining same speed and on flat surface. at all speeds it will sometimes pause upto 2 seconds when trying to accelerate quickly. it will sometimes shift and go and others will squeal the tires and pop like it shifted two gears at once. also, it will max out at 8 rpms when on the highway until it finally shifted. *ak

Took delivery on brand new 2007 camry le 4 cylinder automatic transmission with 29 miles on 05-02-2007. two hours later flew out of town for nearly a week. came back and drove car for about 100 miles. problems: hesitated when turning through intersection then lurched forward when put in drive after backing out of driveway. driftedto the left. also, smelled burning oil. a check on internet revealed that toyota was aware of problems on model xle 6 cylinder. numerous current complaints by new owners. this was a potential safety issue.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that the vehicle would not move forward when he attempted to accelerate from a stop. the vehicle had transmission problems since the vehicle was purchased. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the shifter was reprogrammed; however, the problem continued. the dealer then stated that the transmission needed to be replaced but because the vehicle was no longer under warranty, the contact would be responsible for the expenses. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that they would call the dealership and try to assist with a remedy. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000. the current mileage was approximately 116,000.

I purchased a 2007 toyota camry le in april of 2006. there is a hesitation when attempting to accelerate. it's a major safety concern when attempting to enter a highway or pass another car . when i press the acceleration, the car hesitates and after a few seconds it accelerates. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the transmission in the vehicle has been downshifting intermittently while driving between 1-30 mph. the vehicle operated normally at speeds greater than 30 mph. during deceleration, the downshifting pulls back as if the vehicle had a manual transmission. the vehicle was taken to toyota on two occasions. the first time, the contact was informed that the vehicle was driving normally. the second time, the dealer stated that they were waiting for a bulletin. the contact stated that the december issue of consumer reports has a report that outlined exactly what he is experiencing with his vehicle. updated 01/09/08. *lj

I purchased a 2007 toyota camry le in april 2007. there is a hesitation when attempting to accelerate. it's a major safety concern when attempting to enter a highway. when i press the acceleration, the car hesitates and after a few seconds, it will jerk forward. *tr

Camry 2007 se v6. acceleration problems, hesitates at take off, transmission slips like its searching for a gear, smell from a/c. engine ticks when i take off and don't let it warm up even though its warm outside. had problems with tires, had them replaced. loud road noise car not very sound proof. feels like steering wheel "sticks"for just a second long enough to scare me like someone is holding it. *tr

Car hesitates and jerks upon acceleration which can be very dangerous and could potentially cause an accident. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. while driving 30 mph the transmission engaged and accelerated without warning. the failure mileage was 100. when changing lanes the vehicle slowed down and attempted to shut off. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. however, they were unable to diagnose it. the current mileage was 9,000. *ak the consumer stated that the vehicle has since been fixed by the dealership. updated 06/08/07 *tr

Constant transmission problems, toyota says hesitation is normal, they can't find any problems, but one toyota mechanic told me that he believed toyota over-designed their car. *tr

6 speed automatic transmission hesitates to down shift in a 2007 toyota camry. *tr

2007 camry transmission bolts, jerks, snap your body and at 40 miles an hour with foot off of gas pedal continues to keep moving at almost same 40 mile hr speed for many blocks. dangerous because brake pedal has to be pushed harder than normal in order to stop car from moving. many 2007 camry's have similar problems if you will just check internet reports. *tr

Getting off on the off ramp and the car lost all power and would not accelerate. the car behind me tried to miss me but ended up hitting me in the side rear. why does this camry lose all power at once and accelerates sporadically. if this is not recalled and fixed soon i will have to trade it in and it won't be for another toyota!!! my family is at risk and it is not worth it when you don't have trust in your vehicle. *jb

My husband & i purchased a 07 camry. a few weeks after purchase, husband noticed problems. transmission was not "acting" right. the car would hesitate for a few seconds when we given gas or sometimes accelerate when we did not; the brakes were bad; & steering column "shook" when we drove over road bumps or speeds > than 50. over next few months when we took the car in for service & voiced our concerns, the service person would tell us that he could not find anything wrong with the car regarding our concerns & during one visit, they drove the car 18 miles & still could not find anything wrong. one day i was getting on freeway & tried to increase my speed, the car stalled for about 4 seconds, as i looked in rear view mirror i saw another car coming behind me at a really fast speed. i was trying to determining what to do as the car appeared to have actually shut off, when it just surged forward & i was moving again. needless to say, this scared the crap out of me & i called my husband & told him what happened. i felt that if we did not do something, we could potentially have an accident, get killed or kill someone else. i finally called the corporate office & told them our story. they instructed us to take the car to the service dept for an assessment. after assessment the mechanic told me that my steering column needed to be replaced; my rotors were completely warped; and they may have to overhaul my transmission but were going to try & reset it to see if that would help (apparently it is run by a compt which tells it how fast or slow it to go when the accelerator is pressed) apparently the computer was not functioning properly or had a "glitch." they reset the transmission & told my husband & i to drive an additional 500miles to "break-in" the transmission & let them know our thoughts. well, we have driven the additional miles & we both feel as if the transmission is slipping again. we are at wits end w/this dangerous $30,000+ car. *tr

I purchased a 2007 toyota camry in september 2006. the vehicle has 16,000+ miles on it. the vehicle hesitates upon acceleration , and at times lunches into gear . this has caused honkning at us and harzardous conditions, especially when changing lanes on the freeway. there is a loud intermitent clunk when turning corners, backing up, and stopping. there is an apparent lack of power when the gears shifts in the automatic transmission. also, there is vibration when backing up with the air conditioner on. we have had the vehicle in the dealership several times and mostly get a song and dance routine from the dealership. they said that everything we were experiencing was normal or due to the computer design or emission standards. this is very difficult to accept since i have been driving for 50 years and have never encountered anything like this before. toyota has at this point not been able to resolve any of these issues. however, they did remove and replace the gas tank to eliminate the clunking problem, and i now know according to the dealership that it was not necessary. the clunking is still present. this car reacts like a vehicle with 200,000 miles on it that is in dire., it needs f a tune up and major overhaul. my wife was involved in a rear end accident 6 weeks ago, and now we realize that this may not have occurred if the car would have accelerated properly. *ak

I purchased a new 2007 toyota camry in june 2006. after returning the car to the dealership several times because of the sluggish acceleration from a stop was consistent and the passing gear downshift felt delayed as if there was a communication lag between the tcm and actual switching of the shift solenoids at speeds less than 50 mph. the cruise control will not set speed. on steeper grades and on the interstate the down shifts are very frequent and at times very dramatic. when cresting a steep hill the transmission down shifts at the crest and takes 2 or 3 seconds to release the throttle, picking up anywhere from 10 to 15 mph and i have to break suddenly in order to slow the car down. i was told by toyota representative that a technical service bulletin came out in september of 2006 for an ecm calibration enhancement to shifting performance and smoothness and this new computer software had to be downloaded in the car and this would recalibrate ecm (pcm) engine & transmission. the catcher to this is that the customer has to request this download before the dealership will follow through. if you don't know about the bulletin how can an average customer request this? the download was performed on this car but didn't help any. the dealership took the car back and i was given a new one in dec. 2006. same thing with this one. i have been through national center for dispute settlement with an appointed arbitrator who had the car inspected by an ase independent inspector. he agreed with the above but in conclusion stated that toyota should "diagnose and repair as necessary". i feel that this is a no win situation for the consumer and toyota knows all about the problems but just doesn't know how to correct them. because of the lack of safety the "lemon law" should be put into effect and these cars recalled. toyota is not going to take responsibility unless forced. this is my first and last toyota vehicle. *jb

We purchased an 07 camry nov 06. at 7,000 miles it started slipping, not accelerating. we took to dealer. they reset memory. didn't help. took a second time, reset memory, didn't help. went through arbitrator, didn't help. the car is unsafe to drive. when it needs to accelerate, it doesn't. i was almost hit by a semi. toyota is aware of a defect in the computer chip, but won't do anything about it. please help me and the other 07 camry owners before an accident occurs which could possibly be fatal. its not a matter of if an accident will occur, but a matter of when. we are also getting bad gas mileage due to the defect. *tr

I baught a 2007 toyota camry in october 2006. after having the car for 6 months the transmission faled. prior to transmission failure had a difficult time shifting gears. the car would stall when coming to a stop. there was vibration in the engine. this problem started gradually ,then increaseed dramatically. thiswas a dangerous problem. i happened to be on the highway when the car stalled. luckely, it was 4am, with little traffic at the time. that morning had toyota retreive the vehicle. the carwas currently being repair by toyota. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. while driving approximately 25-45 mph, the transmission surged periodically. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure. the vehicle drove 18 miles per gallon in city driving only. the failures have not been corrected. the current mileage was 1,700 and failure mileage was 15.

Vehicle surged and had delayed acceleration. also, had an episode of not being able to go over 10 mph, and had a strong burning smell. vehicel slipped out of gear under sustained and steady speed, and also between first and second gears when accelerating.*ak the dealer said they could find nothing wrong, and most of these symptoms (surging/delayed acceleration) were normal for the camry. this is not normal. this is dangerous. the next day the vehicle wouldn't start at all. dealer had it flatbedded to them. replaced ecu computer. this did not fix the slipping transmission or the engine surging or delayed acceleration. this vehicle is hard to control speedwise due to not knowing if the car will go when pushing on the gas pedal. sometimes there is up to a three second delay, other times it surges to high rpm and you shoot forward. a very scary car to drive. dealer won't/cant fix.

We purchased a camry le in mid-january and have brought it in twice since then for issues related to the transmission - continuous shifting (or not) at speeds between 35 and 45 (even when trying to maintain a constant speed without cruise control), hesitation when trying to accelerate to merge or climb a hill, sudden downshifts when braking at slow speeds - and have been sent home both times with the message that it is operating "the way it's supposed to be," that i just happen to driving at a speed at which it is more noticeable. i find this answer completely unacceptable. i happen to do a lot of city driving - mostly 45 mph and under - so i just have to live with it? the jerkiness of both accelerating and braking could be dangerous, and try as i might to get used to it, it is so unpredictable that i just can't ignore it. my teenage daughter is just about to start driving, and i won't feel comfortable with her driving this car until these transmission problems have been satisfactorily addressed. but first, toyota must admit that there's a problem!. *jb

I bought 2 2007 toyota camrys, both are 4 cyl cars. when driving these cars, and you come off a ramp or you are at an intersection and you try to accelerate, there is substantial hesitation. this has become very very dangerous at times. on at least three occasions when i tried to accelerate there was a 4-5 second "pause" and then the car kicked in and accelerated. this is dangerous. take it from a police officer, this is very dangerous. *jb

2007 camry-transmissions hesitates-was in 3 + times to correct...not corrected. the vehicle is dangerous and very unsafe. was recalibrated twice, problem still exists. have had numerous near miss accidents due to this hesitation in the transmission. went through toyota arbitration, was denied. there is a real design defect with this vehicle and should be considered very unsafe to operate. *tr

Throttle and transmission hesitation when starting out from stop, and when attempting to increase speed, ie: hazard avoidance, followed by speed overshoot. cruise control over reacted to slight grade increase, such as an overpass, by down shifting the transmission 1 to 2 gears and accelerating past set speed by 7 to 10 mph. car will slow to set speed and repeat the down shifting and acceleration until the cruise control was turned off or the road was leveled. during long up hill driving the cruise control has to be turned off completely as it presented a great possibility of causing an accident. the dealer maintaied s that the engine, transmission, and cruise control operated normally. *ak

Complaint: automatic transmission on 2007 toyota camry. vehicle does not respond during acceleration especially from a stop as well as during normal driving. lack of response recurs regularly since purchase in march of this year. problem has been reported to toyota with no response as well as to toyota service department who has admitted that they have received many complaints but cannot figure out what is wrong as well as toyota has told them there is nothing out of the ordinary. this problem has caused numerous close calls and near-misses when driving especially when crossing intersections putting my families lives in jeopardy due to toyota's refusal to admit their problem. this issue needs to be looked into by this department due to the large number of consumer complaints on this safety issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. while attempting to accelerate to 40 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate and the rpm's increased. the vehicle was reprogrammed twice by the dealer, but that did not remedy the failure. the dealer stated that the contact needs to learn how to drive the vehicle. he feels that this is a safety issue because a crash could occur due to the lack of acceleration. the current and failure mileages were 20,100. consumer is updating information. *nj the consumer stated he noticed a very rough downshift in the transmission. there was no fix for the computer problem because of a software problem. the dealer finally reprogrammed the transmission. updated evoq 05/27/09. *jb updated 05/27/09 *bf updated 5/29/09. *nj updated 06/01/09.*jb updated 06/22/09 *bf updated 06/26/09.*jb

Car hesitates during acceleration. also gets stuck in certain gear at times, especially when going downhill. car jerks a couple times a week when accelerating. has been happening since the beginning. dealers did tbs and no change. say that it is not a problem and nothing they can do. scared to let kids drive. *tr

2007 toyota camry. first problem within 30 days of owning the car was a loud clunking under the hood when driving car at different speeds. after mechanic test drove with me he could not feel the problem. he did not check under the hood and i did not leave my car. he told me to come back when it happened again. the second time i took the car back i left it over nite and was told the next day there was nothing wrong. i insisted they keep my car until they found what i was talking about. after 2 days i called them and they determined my transmission was bad and replaced it. they had my car almost 2 weeks. a couple days after the new tranny was put in i went on a 120 mile trip.i was extremely disappointed with my cars performance. it would accelerate at high speeds after i took my foot off the gas pedal and when i disengaged the cruise. it was a very dangerous and frightning situation when i came upon a wreck on interstate and my car accelerated instead of decreasing the speed. i took my car back once again for and oil change and to get the car check out and they said they fixed it with a computer chip adjustment. i took my car back again today because i am still having problems with automatically accelerating at low speeds.

I own a 2007 camry and it has a terrible hesitation with the engine that stalls alot especially pulling on interstates with fast moving traffic. it also has the same issues with normal driving in town. this is a huge issue and i do not feel safe driving this vehicle that i am paying a good bit of money for. i feel i can't sell it knowing it has a problem and the trade in value is terrible. toyota needs to recall all these cars and fix the issue or give the consumers there money back. *tr

The cruise control/transmission on my 2007 camry causes the car to operate in an unsafe manner. when the cruise control is engaged, due to its sensitivity, the transmission goes through a series of abrupt downshifts causing the car to accelerate and exceed the cruise control speed setting. at this point, the car looses speed and the transmission then shifts back into overdrive. the downshifting starts again until the speed control setting is exceeded. on a long hill, it is not uncommon for the transmission to sequence between overdrive and third gear four or five times. the exceeding of the cruise control setting is very dangerous. i have had to engage the brakes to avoid an accident with traffic ahead of me. i have brought the car back to the dealer for this problem and have been told that he can do nothing until toyota comes up with a fix. i have written two letters to toyota asking them to fix this problem they have not replied to either letter. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. when driving approximately 60 mph and greater and attempting to accelerate, the transmission hesitates. the hesitation occurs continuously. while attempting to decelerate to 15 mph and then speed up, the vehicle fails to accelerate. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who noticed the failure, but stated that there was no remedy. the engine size and failure mileage were unknown. the current mileage is 6,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that when he depresses the accelerator pedal, the engine revs but the vehicle will not move. he also stated that the vehicle operates as if it is unsure of which gear it is in. the failures occur intermittently. he has notified the dealer and they stated that there is a flaw with the ecm module. the manufacturer, who has a case number, stated that the vehicle was designed to perform in that manner and offered to replace the ecm module. however, they stated that his vehicle already has the updated software. the current mileage is 20,000 and failure mileage was 5,000.

Car downshifts on small hills while using cruise control. car hesitates at times and has poor acceleration as the transmission searches for a gear. this lasts for seconds, creating a safety hazard. the problems were resolved with a tsb issued 8/2/07 but the problem came back after a few days. it seemed toyota's "learning" drivetrain re-learned all the problems. *jb

We recently purchased an 2007 camry le 4 cylinder/ 5-speed auto, and the hesitation problems had been an extreme nuisance from day one, and the problem may pose a considerable safety hazard. i took vehicle back to the dealership, and the service department said they had not yet heard of any such problems. my service manager and i agreed that the computer system may still have been learning my driving habits, and that it would resolve the problem over time. but nothing changed over the next few weeks. i recently took it back with around 8000 miles on it. the problem was the two-second lag in performance ,shifting from first through third gear. even though the car was running, it felt as though it just didn't want to go. the car hit second gear, and then, nothing! it didn't stall, but it fell flat on its face for about two full seconds before it got up and went. *ak my wife and i believe that this is a potentially dangerous vehicle. the extreme hesitation may present a hazard in traffic when more aggressive acceleration is needed. the car just dies when you try to accelerate. if you round a hard corner slowly enough for the car shift back into first gear, there will be nearly two seconds lag before it shifts up to second. if you have someone following close behind you, it is quite possible that you will get rear-ended. i showed the service manager my web findings, and we scheduled an appointment to have the transmission software updated. after that adjustment, the problem has improved, but is definitely not resolved. let me end by saying that our dealership has been courteous, helpful, and responsive to our complaints thus far. unfortunately, this problem appears to be out of their hands until a fix is found, or a problem recognized by toyota. *ak

Toyota has taken an unconsciable position against a potentially dangerous problem with the 2007 camry with automatic transmission. they admitted the problem, which they preferred to call a concern existing in all 2007 camry four and six cylinder vehicles. the problem was a hesitation, or lag, when attempted to accelerate the vehicle. this occursrred at low speeds from a stop, turning. lane change, or forward movement about 80% of the time. i have been buying camrys and avalons since 1989 and have been a satisfied customer until the purchase of the 2007 camry xle, 4 cylinder with 5-speed automatic transmission. toyota has obviously weighed the cost to them of correcting the problem against financial losses from serious accident law suites. *ak

1/31/2007. toyota camry. engine hesitates while driving under normal conditions. *mc the consumer stated the vehicle exhibits intermittent loss of power when acceleration is needed. *jb

Transmission flare...car will sporadically lung between 35 and 40 miles per hour. transmission was replaced in early 2007 due to hesitation at startup; however, transmission flare still exists with new transmission. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the vehicle hesitates when the contact depresses the accelerator pedal. toyota stated that nothing could be done because it was a design flaw. the contact believes that the vehicle is unsafe and dangerous. he stated that when merging into traffic at 60-65 mph, the vehicle may or may not pick up speed when the accelerator pedal is depressed. the current mileage is 4,850 and failure mileage was 2,879. the consumer provided repair invoices for the vehicle. the dealer stated a/c is not working, it is only blowing warm air regardless of setting. updated 08/07/07 *tr

Have brought my 2007 4 cyl toyota camry to dealership 4 separate times due to severe hesitation in acceleration since bought new in april 2006 . the previous time they reflashed the computer as per the technical service bulletin but the hesitation remains unacceptable and dangerous when entering highway or when in need of quick and even acceleration. the past time they suggested i contact toyota usa headquarters which i plan to do immediately. obviously since there are so many complaints on the nhtsa site there appears to be something basically wrong with the design of the transmission. i will be starting the lemon law of nj process unless toyota can quickly rectify this very unsafe defect. *nm

History: automatic transmission began flaring when cold after putting around 400 miles on the new car -- gear wouldn't "catch" and would skip gears; in shop for tsb to correct problem, but didn't correct it; in shop again to replace transmission since corporate claimed that would for sure correct flaring problem; additional problems resulting from new tranny including strange whooshing noise on driver side, jerkiness when changing gears, and hesitation when accelerating; back to shop to correct; shop was able to remove whooshing noise, but jerkiness remained and flaring continued albeit at different times than it did before. failure and consequences: after stopping at a stop light, tried to make left-hand turn to join the interstate merge lane, but car would not supply enough power despite being in drive and pushing on the accelerator appropriately; barely made it across the intersection before having to pull over to shoulder to stop, put on hazard lights, and let other interstate traffic get by; theorizing that the transmission probably got stuck in whatever gear the car was in as i approached the stop light (3rd or 2nd) and then didn't appropriately downshift itself to get up to power coming from a complete stop at the stop light to cross the intersection; because the cars behind me were paying attention and roads free of ice and they saw that the car was not able to get up to speed, i was lucky not to be rear ended. what was done to correct failure: because it's been in the shop 5 times for bad transmission, not sure what they'll do to correct it -- that is pending. will likely request buy back due to safety concerns and apparent inability to correct underlying transmission problems. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. after purchasing the vehicle on october 31, 2006, the contact noticed that there was a lack of acceleration in the vehicle. while attempting to accelerate from a complete stop, the vehicle hesitated. the accelerator pedal was depressed to the floor, but the vehicle still hesitated to pick up speed and then suddenly sped off. the dealer found no failures; however, they later asked her to bring the vehicle back for repairs. after the repairs, the vehicle continued to lack acceleration. the contact returned to the dealer and repaired again. the vehicle was serviced a total of seven times and the dealer stated that they "updated" the vehicle; however, the failure persists. the failure mileage was 3,000 and current mileage was 26,500.

6-speed automatic exhibits shift flare. automatic transmission will intermittently feel as though it has slipped into neutral during a 2-3 or 3-4 up shift resulting in a loss of power to the drive wheels followed by a bump into gear. at wide open throttle, engine will rev 1-2,000 rpms with no increase in vehicle speed. *jb

Transmission hesitates when downshifting and then over-compensates. very dangerous as i have nearly been rear-ended during hesitation which is essentially a stall in traffic and the overcompensation causes one to nearly rear-end the vehicle in front. *tr

The camry 4 cylinder has a major lag in response time associated with low speeds. there is an obvious delay between the gas pedal being pressed and the engine responding. the dealer attributes this to the drive-by-wire throttle system which toyota has already released a software update regarding the tcm module. they say this is normal. *jb

The problem i've encountered centers around the transmission. there is a hesitation when the car shifts gears, either when getting up to speed or slowing down to stop. one toyota dealer told me it was a problem with the transmission-related software that could be fixed via an upgrade. however, the problem persists. as a result, i took it to another toyota dealer and the representative of the service department told me there was not an issue at all. this occurred after he "test-drove" it for 3 miles. *tr

When you try to start from a stopped position, there is hesitation that lasts 3-5 seconds. this has become very dangerous because you expect to move and you don't. i was almost struck because of the hesitation. *jb

My 2007 camry le lags when accelerating as coming out of turn at times and also when accelerating after coming to a stop.*jb

Car hesitates when pulling out into traffic. to try overcoming the sluggish situation, i will push on the accelerator, then, when it catches up, the car will shift gears and surge. this is not a good feeling. i complained to the dealer. they put a revised program into the computer. that made it worse. they went back to the original computer program and the problem has been with the car since i bought it, december 2006. i have gotten many stories about how the car will adjust itself. the intentions may be good but the results have been terrible. i have owned 7 toyota's and this is the first time that i have had a complaint, and it's a big one. it happens every day. the only day it doesn't happen is when it is parked all day. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry. the contact stated that the vehicle feels as if it is losing power or downshifting when accelerating from a turn at 10 mph. she stated that it is problematic when changing lanes because of its failure to accelerate properly. the vehicle takes approximately three or four seconds before it gains normal speed. the mechanic stated that the vehicle's transmission was designed to perform in that manner. the current mileage is 2,364 and failure mileage was 100. the consumer stated filed a complaint with toyota and was informed there were many complaints for this defect. updated 09/04/04 *tr

The car in question is a 2007 camry le with automatic transmission with just under 2,500 miles. upon acceleration from a complete stop a deep thud is heard and felt from the rear of the vehicle. the problem also can be duplicated by placing the car in reverse and coming to a complete stop (as in backing out of a driveway or parking space). the dealer has been informed of the problem and has been unsuccessful in resolving the issue. *nm
