We have classified the 246 complaints from 2005 Toyota Camry about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
On 4/13 around 2pm, i arrived at friend's townhouse (address: 203 wildfell trl. cary nc27513). i drove my car into a parking lot in front of the townhouse slowly while stepping on the brake. before i shifted the gear to the 'parking', my car suddenly shoot up and hit the electrical transformer box in the front of the townhouse. the car kept moving forward until it hit the outside wall of the next door neighbor's house, then moving backward and stopped. the electrical transformer box was damaged, that caused the power outage in the neighborhood for at least 6 hours. the front bumper of my car was also damaged. i also got the citation and got charged with 'the misdemeanor or infraction' from the police, for that i will need to hire a lawyer to defend the case. i was so shocked and panic. i have a very clean driving record in the past 30 years. i knew toyota did have a 'sudden acceleration' problem, but because my car was never recalled so i thought it was safe to drive. yesterday, i searched the internet and found out the '2005 toyota camry' did have several car incidents caused by 'sudden acceleration' in the past. i was lucky that the car didn't injure or kill any people. i don't want to drive this car anymore. please investigate why toyota didn't recall my car and the toyota company should reimburse me all the costs of the damages.
2005 toyota camry xle. consumer writes in regards to unexpected acceleration. *ld the consumer stated while reversing the engine revved to high rpm and lunged backwards approximately 7 feet, jumped a 6 inch concrete step and plowed into the garage door. *js
While pulling into a parking spot at minimal rate of speed in a residential parking lot. i experienced random acceleration of my vehicle.despite applying the brake the vehicle would not stop accelerating. i turned my vehicle into a metal pole to keep it from temporarily moving forward. due to the acceleration & friction, the asphalt under the car was burned, the left front tire exploded as did the passenger side window. the entire right front side of the vehicle was totaled. i was finally able to get the vehicle to stop by turning off the ignition.
When i reversed from a parking space the car accelerated so rapidly i couldn't control the speed. i had to slam on the brake as hard as i could! tried to return to parking spot. the car continued to accelerate it jumped the curb and was stopped by trees!! absolutely terrifying!!

I initially had an unexpected acceleration, but was able to stop the car and didn't know why it had happened. i was unaware that this was a common issue. later i was backing out of a parking space, then switched to drive in attempt to go forward. the car accelerated w/o my touching the gas. i couldn't stop the car and it plowed into several other cars. i didn't understand why this had happened. the police came and assumed it was my fault because after having this happen, i was confused. they took the car to a body shop that did the repairs. no one mentioned this is a common problem w/toyotas. by the time i heard about sudden unintended acceleration (sua), i contacted toyota. as the insurance company had already arranged to have the car fixed before i called, the investigator said they wouldn't even look at the car as it had been repaired. then i had a 3rd incident where i'd come to a stop, but the car began to accelerate. initial date estimate was a guesstimate for mid-october acceleration. 11.21.16 was the accident, which resulted in over $7,000 damage to my car and more was paid towards the cars i hit. the most recent acceleration was january 16, 2017. to date toyota has on reattached the carpets, so i am concerned this car is still a risk to my life & that of others.

On 12/4/2015, experienced sluggish response when pressing accelerator, then sudden unintended acceleration and surging forward at high speed, causing speed of car to be totally unpredictable with a steady foot on the accelerator. braking did slow and stop the car. took car immediately to toyota dealer. they replaced the ecu (electronic control unit) at a cost of $900. about 10 weeks later, the exact same thing happened again. driving to work on the freeway that day, acceleration was sluggish and unpredictable. parked car at work, and then after backing up in the parking area to leave, the car again was sluggish on acceleration, and then began to surge forward unpredictably, out of my control, with no increase in pressure on the accelerator. again, the brakes functioned to slow or stop the car. i pulled over and called the toyota dealer, who advised i could bring it in that evening. no surging was noticed when car was in park. i had a harrowing drive to the dealership during rush hour, keeping a long distance behind the cars in front of me to avoid hitting anyone. acceleration was very sluggish when merging or starting up again after a red light turned green, and once i began moving ahead, the unpredictable surging and slowing began again and continued until i stopped at the next light, etc. they have had the car ten days and have been unable to replicate the problem. i now need to return the loaner, and drive the defective car again. no floor mats were in place. i can only hope my husband, children or i are not involved in a serious accident in the event this happens again, which i fully expect. how can toyota and nhtsa determine there is no problem with these cars when there are hundreds of complaints in this record, and people have been killed and injured as a result of problems with unintended acceleration in these vehicles?

The hesitate to accelerate i.e. after accelerating a bit, it slows down or rather do not accelerate. so it causes difficult to merge and the drivers behind the car may hit. *tr
At around 3:00 pm, i was in my car, driving at a very low rate of speed, approximately a couple of miles per hour, to move into a line of cars at a gas station. suddenly, without warning and on its own my car surged forward and accelerated. as my car sped forward, the engine seemed to rev higher, making a loud noise. i tried to stop the car with the brake, but the car did not stop. during this awful event, my car crashed into two different cars, one of which was occupied, and one of which was parked with no occupant. finally, my car came to a stop. the air bags in my car did not deploy. paramedics and police came to the scene. there was a police report. i was taken to the hospital and checked. my understanding from my insurance company is that there is a claim for injury by one of the individuals in the occupied car. my car was impounded. my insurance company has informed me that my car is a total loss, and has been branded non-repair. i have been informed by my insurance company that they and toyota will conduct a joint investigation of the car. note: as i read and understand the safercar.gov website (powered by nhtsa), it appears that as of this date, there are 625 complaints regarding the 2005 toyota camry, with apparently 249 of them almost 40% reported in the vehicle speed control category. the reports list numerous injuries and even deaths. i request that nhtsa investigate the matter of unintended acceleration in the 2005 toyota camry. i believe that all 2005 toyota camrys should be recalled. it is my hope that other such accidents can be prevented in the future, and that injury, death and property damage can be averted. *tr
I was trying to park my vehicle, suddenly gas pedal got stuck and i hit another vehicle and ran in to the bushes, my car has a body damage and also i accidentally hit another car as well. the core reason for this issue is gas pedal getting locked, this is the first time i experience this in the vehicle which i bought by 2011. *tr

Backing out of a parking spot at wal-mart car surged and i had to slam on the brake. my foot was on the brake when backing up and i turned around to go forward when car was still backing up so i slammed on the brake. of course i panicked and could not understand what was happening. the car was moving backward and my foot was not on the gas. this was the second time the same thing happened in october while backing up. it also had surge forward before after going back and forth out of a parking space. i still have the dent on the front bumper. *tr
November 9th 2013 - as i pulled into a parking space with my foot on the brake, the car took off like a rocket and hit a small tree. when i put the car in reverse, again with my foot on the brake, it shot backward into a parked car. november 25th 2013 - again, pulling into a parking spot with my foot on the brake, the car shot forward, this time, it went right into a brick wall. approximately 40 bricks rained down on the hood of the vehicle, the front end is smashed in, but this time, i had a passenger that was injured and kept overnight in the hospital. the airbags never deployed. the police that responded were shocked. *tr

I was backing up on grass when the car accelerated backwards. i panicked because i thought i had my foot on the brake and then i was confused reaching for the brake pedal and then gas pedal. my foot was going back and forth. i slammed on the brake to stop but hit a fence pole destroyed bumper. the car seemed to be moving on its own and i may have hit the gas pedal by accident then slammed on the brake. no one was hurt but shook up. it happened again on december 18, 2013. i was backing up again in wal-marts parking lot and for some reason it accelerated again and i remember saying not again. that time i know my right foot was not on the gas pedal at all. i panicked again and slammed on the brake hitting another vehicle behind me. this car jerks a lot and it had accelerated going forward twice, once in a parking garage and damaged my front bumper, then again i almost went over the rail road tracks parking by a business. i do not feel safe in this car. toyota is investigating my claim no.[xxx]. investigator will look at my car next week. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)*tr
This is a delayed response, as i was not aware that toyota finally accepted responsibility for spontaneous accelerations. i was in slow, stop and go traffic and my car suddenly accelerated. i recall looking down as i pressed the brake as hard as i could because the car was not stopping or decelerating. i thought that my foot must have been inadvertently on the gas pedal but it was firmly planted on the brake. the brake worked as there were definite skid marks. i slammed into the back of a tahoe, totaling my car and causing a pulled shoulder, whip lash, and a deviated septum in my nose from the airbag deployment. i was afraid that the policeman would not even believe my account of the accident so i did not report the incident as clearly as it occurred (though i definitely accepted responsibility). i just received a check for approximately $23.00 a few weeks ago for a class action lawsuit settlement. i am furious that i lost an otherwise (paid for) great car, sustained injuries and more important, endangered people around me. i also now have an "accident" on my insurance record. the financial, physical and emotional toll this has taken can certainly not be "bought out" with $23.00. i wish that i had told my experience to the officer as i clearly perceived it, regardless of how implausible it seemed. now, i have foolishly already purchased another camry, and, once again they have a major safety recall. at least they have openly acknowledged this one. however, i cannot get them to return my calls with an appointment for a repair. what am i supposed to do in the meantime? wait until another "accident" happens? how can i get in to get a repair? please let me know. i am afraid to drive it but cannot afford to rent a car indefinitely. i am grateful to have found this site. thank you. *tr

I pulled out of the driveway with my 91 yr grandmother.the engine shut off at the first stop light in traffic.i restarted the engine, slightly pushed on the gas pedal.the engine revved high on its own,the car violently shot forward, i managed to turn the corner then the engine died.a motorist pulled over and helped me push the car into a nearby school parking lot.after a few minutes i restated the car and it revved up itself ,accelerated too fast and died.i had to call a tow truck to take it home and again on monday to the repair shop.the mechanic determined it was a defective throttle body,it had frozen in a wide open position, not responding to the gas pedal..the solution was a brand new throttle body, part cost was well over $900 dollars.i still have the defective throttle body, the plate is still frozen in an open position.my grandmother was well frightened.there was no police report. i believe this was a very dangerous design flaw and hope toyota will reimburse me. *tr
I stopped my car at my mailbox at the foot of my 45% incline short driveway and put it in park with the engine running. after getting out to get my mail, i re-entered the car, put the car in drive, and touched the accelerator. the car engine "roared" more loudly than i had ever heard and lunged forward uphill towards my brick home. i slammed the brake pedal one time as hard as i could and the car stopped. i had not expected it to stop. there was no collision, but thank god i did not kill or injure some innocent person or myself. i now refuse to drive the car, which is a real problem for me and my family. i understand your agency has failed to force toyota to include the 2005 model in your recall to install new braking system override. this is unconscionable. *kb
I was pulling into a parking spot in front of a friend's townhouse when the car suddenly accelerated. i was able to stop the car by putting both feet on the brake. the car stopped about one foot before crashing into the front wall of the townhouse. although i have not experienced the problem since this incident, i am now somewhat afraid to drive the car now, nor do i feel right about selling the car. *tr

My 2005 camry has 53000 on it, very well maintained. was driving 25 mph on a traverse when the engine suddenly died. i tried to restart the car without success. called a towing service, however, 10 minutes later i was able to start the car and drove home. the "service engine" light remained on. at first chance i drove my car to my local mechanic who told me it was the throttle body, but suggested to bring my car to the toyota dealer because he had seen so many of camry throttle malfunctions that he thought there might be a recall. i took his advice, brought it to the dealer who confirmed that my throttle body was bad and needed replacing. however he told me that he could not guarantee that the "service engine" light would not go off unless i had an engine flush and a full tune-up. this did not sit well with me, so i declined the services. i paid him $100 as a diagnostic fee. when he went to get my car, the engine would not turn on at all. i called a towing company who took it back to my mechanic. he replaced the throttle and reset the service light. the car is now running, but because of my mechanic's statement and many similar throttle complaints recorded on the internet, i strongly feel that the throttle issue should be investigated. *kb
Car feels like its going to flip over when driving past 60. had to have brakes changed twice. car has accelerated while driving at least twice in a two year span when driving over 60 miles per hour. biggest problems are the wheels which make the car ride seem unstable but only got tires rotated once; however, vehicle seems to run lop-sided? *tr
I have been an extremely safe driver for 21 years. two incidents of unintended acceleration occurred within one hour yesterday afternoon with my 2005 camry 2005 le. until this time, the car behaved and drove perfectly for 6 years. *tr it was a dry and hot (93f) day, and the road condition was perfect in both cases. the first time was during a 30-mph cruising along a side street when the car suddenly accelerated by itself and jerked toward one side. i immediately corrected the problem by braking and steering. the second time was at a stop sign on a side street. i was waiting for the other car to pass before i could turn left when the car suddenly tried to accelerated by itself even though my foot was firmly pressing the brake. during this brief struggle between me and the car, the engine made some low, grinding noise, and the car was able to move forward twice, about 6 inches each time, despite my hard foot braking. no accident was resulted in either case. i reported these two incidents to toyota customer care immediately and was directed to a local toyota dealership for investigation. the car is currently being examined by a local dealer for potential causes. i am afraid to drive this car if the defect is not repaired. *tr

Wife was returning from work when 2005 camry decelerated from 50 mph to almost dying. when restarted, car would only drive 20 mph for the 13 mile trip home. luckily, as the car almost died, the vehicles behind were able to brake and allow her to pull into a driveway. throttle body was replaced. no "service engine" lights gave any advanced warning to the sudden loss of power. *tr
