Problems with 2011 Subaru Outback POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2011 Subaru Outback starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 109 104 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Subaru Outback

My 2011 subaru outback is experiencing shuddering and stalls when going downhill or uphill, coming to a stop at city street intersections, resulting in the engine shutting off. it occurs randomly and i nearly got in accidents with drivers behind me having to react to the sudden, full stops. in one week, it has happened 3 times. i fear driving in the car alone and certainly with my family in the car! upon notifying my subaru dealership of this experience, they stated it was an update i need. i never received any notice from subaru of said update. i have been diligent with service and any update/repair suggested by subaru dealership. i feel this is an emergent safety concern and notification to subaru owners!

Today i took in my subaru outback 3.6r for an oil change while coming home i had experienced something like someone had hit me from behind. what had happen was when i come to a stop or slow traffic and begin to accelerate i get a maybe a late/or a delay in shifting causing the car to jerk or a bang. this really concern me so i'm taking it in today.

2011 subaru outback stalled on a hill on a highway while the care while accelerating and emergency codes came on. took it to a mechanic and found out that there are major issues with the cvt transmission. found out that subaru has known about this stalling issue for some time now and instead of doing a recall; has just extended the warranty for some time. when i visited the subaru dealership in the past; no one alerted me to think possible issue. thankfully, no one was hurt when it occurred to me but stalling on a highway can definitely lead to injuries.

My vehicle was covered under the 'extended warranty' subaru offered after my oem transmission was failing and overheating with 154,000 miles on the odometer. 13 months, and 28,000 miles later, my second transmission is failing. i have an offer from subaru of america for a $2000 credit to trade in my car on a new subaru. the dealership that performed the warranty work also offered me %50 coverage since it was close to the 12 month warranty they offer on work. i do not want a new car, i want my car to be able to last. 18,000 miles on a transmission is not good enough and a consumer should be able to expect at least 75,000 miles or 3 years. these cvts are flawed, and subaru customers need to be treated better than this, at least from corporate. subaru deserves to recall this part and take care of the issue. at the very least the consecutive transmissions should be warrantied as a new part and not considered part of the current vehicle power train mileage warranty. i've been a loyal subaru owner for 12 years, driving 3 different cars. i have no choice but to accept my local dealerships offer to replace the part, and i'm disgusted by subaru of america's offer to buy another one of their shoddy vehicles for a small discount. i hope that this comment persuades the nhtsa to mandate a recall, and the company to change its practices, i also hope that readers will reconsider their subaru's, and get out of their unsafe cars as long as they can do so. this company is not worth it, don't be fooled by their marketing campaigns. choose a toyota suv or truck.

Cvt failure. while driving..car shuddered, dash lights came on and stalled out. mileage: 115.000...just over extended warranty. cost of repairs 9,597.70 plus tax. contacted subaru....they will not help.

My husband and i were driving from maryland to new york city late at night. all of a sudden, we heard a grinding noise and within 30 minutes our car completely broke down. no warning lights ever came on in the car indicating there was a serious issue. we had just gotten off the verrazano bridge. had the car stopped on the bridge, we could have been seriously injured, if not killed. we came to find out that it was a full transmission failure. the subaru dealer in new york indicated that there was no transmission fluid left in the front differential, but they could not find any signs of a leak. the valve body was repaired in september 2017 and at that time it was covered under subaru's extended cvt warranty. at the time of that repair work, the subaru service center who did the work confirmed that they had added some transmission fluid to the car. we contacted subaru of america to see if they would help us with the cost of a new transmission, since the extended warranty had only just expired on july 31, 2018 (our car broke down on august 28) and because we had already had transmission work done less than a year ago. subaru of american very rudely informed us that they have "zero financial obligation to us" and would not be helping us with the cost of repairs ($7000 to repair). we are beside ourselves with how this happened to our car. how can we have a full transmission failure less than a year after transmission work was done on the car and have no warning lights come on in the car indicating there was an issue? how did all of the transmission fluid leak out of our car without us knowing, and how is it that subaru is unable to find the cause of the leak? and what kind of company does not stand by and help a customer with an issue that they clearly knew was occurring (hence extended the cvt warranty to begin with)? subaru should have issued a recall on this vehicle.

Car recently began to almost stall while driving after coming to a stop or while traveling at low speeds. check engine light then came on and the error code indicates a problem with the transmission. took the car to dealership for repairs and they said that the car needs a new transmission. car was dealer serviced for the recommended 100,000 mile service in august '17; no mention of the known transmission issues was made. now 3 weeks after the "extended warranty" period has expired the transmission appears to have failed. was charged over $200 for the dealer service department to reset the check engine light and the light came back on on the way home from the dealer service department. currently waiting to see if subaru corporate will stand behind their product; in any event the problem appears to be widespread and posses a hazard to motorists since the affected vehicles can stop, stall, or loose power while on the road with little to no warning.

Vehicle shudders and stalls out while decelerating on approach to intersection or to stop creating a potentially dangerous situation while in traffic. this has happened mostly on city streets but in busy urban traffic it is particularly problematic.

The car started shaking violently on the highway and all warning lights came on flashing, prompting us to pull over immediately with our two small children in back. we had to get the car towed and our mechanic noted the computer codes were for the transmission issue that subaru was extending the warranty for. we took it to 2 subaru dealers to confirm, which the 2nd one did after the 1st one refused to look at the car. unfortunately, since it happened 11 days after their warranty expired they won't fix it unless we pay $4000+ or trade it in for a brand new car which we can't afford. if they knew this was an issue to provide a warranty on it then they should repair it for free as the car is unsafe to drive as-is. there should be a recall.

My wife and children were driving down the highway when the car began to shift hard, as my wife slowed down the vehicle stalled out stranding them on a busy highway . they were stuck on the highway in 100 degree temperatures until a tow truck arived. we had this towed to a subaru dealer and we were told it was a transmission error that was a known issue by subaru. subaru issued an extended warrenty to correct the issue however we were 3 days to late to take advantage of this offer. i contacted subaru to request that they cover the cost of the repair since it was a known fault in the transmission parts used in the vehicle. they refused to help with any of the repairs.

Transmission failure after 135000 m replace with use one for $3800.00 new one is $8000.00 + labor = 10000.00 is to expensive

While braking at intersections, engine stalls causing dangerous situations for my wife and self. we are beginning to fear driving our subaru.

Vehicle stalls when coming to a stop due to faulty torque converter.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 subaru outback. after the vehicle came to a stop, the engine began to shutter and the vehicle stalled. once restarted, the vehicle operated normally. harley swain subaru (1915 n 1st st, herminston, or) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 142,000.

Car stalls at low speeds, all lights are flashing, code reads transmission control system and torque converter failing , when coming to a stop it stalls out which is dangerous for my wife and kids

When having to come to a hard stop the engine will die. it has happened 3 times now. our shop ran a diagnostic and it showed a problem with the torque converter.

My vehicle has had transmission related issues since i purchased it. i have taken it to the dealer numerous times to have it addressed and was always told it was nothing. in dec. 2017 my car broke down while on vacation in fl, it had 131,500 miles at the time. after having it towed it was diagnosed as a valve body failure. 10 months and 7k miles later it is now stalling and shutting down when i brake and i have been told that i need a new torque converter. i never received the letter about the cvt transmission issues and extended warranty, nor was this covered when i had the valve body replaced. the car stalling when braking is a huge safety issue and should be a recall. i luckily have not had to brake to the point of the car shutting down when driving on a road with higher speed limits, it has only happened in town when approaching stop lights or stop signs.

Over the past year my mechanic has put in two new batteries in my car. my 2011 outback has a problem with starting, this was back when i had 80,000 miles on it. the connectors where fine and he cleaned them. the issue still has not been resolved, he can't seem to figure out what is causing it. there is no problem with the alternator. the passenger rear brake light has been replaced three times in four years of ownership, again no cause for the problem. i've taken it to authorized subaru dealerships and the original one i purchased from to no prevail. today i write with the issue of my cvt. the fact that i received a one year or 100,000 miles from date of year made is or which ever comes first is complete crap. today i started experiencing issues with the car wanting to what i describe as stalling out. i was going down my road which was slushy from snow/rain but mainly wet from the rain that came. subaru told me there is nothing wrong, and won't do anything till something brakes. so if the problem which has plagued almost fifty thousand outbacks causing 'stalling" like manuals when the clutch isn't engaged and being told it needs to brake?? this is not safe to owners. this is not safe to other motorists.this is deaths waiting to happen, this needs to be addressed and made a recall. only in the united states can a manufacturer get away with such things as this. i'm heading into winter in new england, last thing i need is for my car to fail in a storm, medical situation etc.. and be stranded because the automaker isn't taken full responsibility. snow blows don't stop on a time, is it really necessary to continue to neglect the problem ?? which should be a recall which is failure on the government for not forcing the issue.

The car is having issues at idling and shuts off / stalls while at the traffic light or stop signals. dealer replaced the torque converter but the issue still persists.

2011 subaru outback only driven by myself, 93000 miles mostly highway. stalling regularly when coming to a sudden or fast stop. slow stopping and pumping brakes would avoid the stall. rpms would suddenly drop after going below 1200. out of warranty. valve body and torque converter replaced. this issue has been noted for many subaru cvt between 2010 and 2012 and should have extended warranty to cover and repairs should be made at no cost to owner due to obvious fault in design.

Car stalls when coming to a stop. this stalling is getting more frequent at both intersections and at traffic lights(both city streets and driving on highways with traffic lights) and is more pronounced when coming to a hard stop. this is becoming a dangerous safety hazard and should be recalled for correction. this started occurring in my are in sept 2017 and has now to the point i can not drive the car safely. i have brought the subaru outback to the dealer for a repair under the subaru tsb 06-107-17 and they are telling me it is not eligible under the extended warranty and the repair in approx $2000.00

My vehicle shutters and dies when stopping at intersections. took to local dealership for diagnostic service . told me they could not duplicate issue. said they could not fix unless they could keep my vehicle and recreate the issue. i work full time and cannot leave my vehicle with them. i was not offered a loaner vehicle while they tried to troubleshoot my vehicle issue. my car is coming up on 100,000 miles. this is a known issue that subaru does not seem to want to fix . this is a safety issue. please issue a recall before someone gets hurt.

Car is starting to stall when stopping from a higher speed 45-50mph at traffic lights on highways.

I have been complaining about my car's symptoms to dealers and service mechanics since august 2014 (90,000+miles) with no diagnosis or repair. symptoms could not be replicated or when low rpms were noted, it was just that - noted. my vehicle shudders, headlights dim, and dips to low rpms when approaching a stop or when in reverse at low speeds. it has stalled 4 times since i have brought it up. the first few were in a parking lot and at traffic lights. this morning was scary (143,000miles)- i was in heavy traffic and could not place the vehicle in park, remove my key or restart my car. i had to run out of my car and leave it there momentarily to get help. from what i understand, subaru has an extended cvt warranty tsb 16-107-17. in it, tsb 16-90-13r - design change to lock-up type torque converter is referred to. i believe this is my problem. but i'm getting the runaround from different subaru dealers and subaru of americas hotline on how this is addressed since i have over 100k miles and whether or not the torque converter is covered in this warranty. since it is "not a recall, as it does not impact the safety of your vehicle", i cannot get it looked at right away nor am i offered a rental while waiting to do so. please - stalling in traffic randomly is a safety hazard! i have to wait a week before i can get an appointment to just check this and hope this time they discover the same things i have - meanwhile i'm not offered a rental and have to drive this one that may stall at any time. please consider having the faulty torque converter assembly recalled. those who have symptoms of randomly stalling in traffic - our lives are in danger and it's only a matter of time before tragedy occurs.perhaps unrelated - my vehicle has also stalled on the freeway going 65mph... lost acceleration and i had enough momentum to pull to the shoulder.

Car abruptly shifts, loses power, and intermittently stalls in lower gears during operation. this may occur during braking, idling, or acceleration. three times the engine shut off completely while driving at lower speeds. all check engine dash lights would illuminate and the car would have to be placed back into park and the ignition turned off and back on to restart. it sometimes took several tries. this creates a significant hazard for being struck in intersections, or from behind in moving traffic. car was in the shop for 2 weeks. subaru mechanics confirmed a defective torque converter and recommended replacement. my mileage was 114k at onset. car is automatic transmission 2011 subaru outback 2.5 i. i had car maintained properly at all recommended service intervals. these problems started after 100k and occurred without prior warning. essentially, the automobile went from fully functional to this situation (sudden stalling during operation) within a week. this situation is a safety hazard and the transmissions should be recalled and replaced immediately. there is a safety bulletin related to this issue (tsb no. 16-101-16) and a warranty extension is not enough. cars beyond 100k miles may not be eligible for coverage of the repairs, which may incur costs of several thousand dollars. manufacturers must be held accountable for defective product.

2011 subaru outback 2.51 premium engine stutters and quits upon hard/quick braking. hard/quick braking followed by vehicle engine quitting typically occurs in heavy traffic, resulting in near accidents. after research: cleaned the mass air intake sensor and throttle sensor. no improvement. upon further research, appears to be a faulty torque converter.

Transmission shudders intensely when coming to a stop around 5 mph. also shudders when stopped, rpms dip to about 500. car stalled twice in the last few days.

The torque converter on the 2011 subaru outback is defective when it reaches higher mileage and causes the vehicle to stall out when stopping abruptly (hard braking). i was driving approximately 30-40mph in suburban traffic when i needed to abruptly brake. my vehicle stalled out twice in traffic after hard braking, both times while driving straight. this is dangerous in traffic as you must restart the vehicle from the stall out and could be hit by other vehicles while doing so. for safety, it is necessary to replace this defective part, which is ridiculously expensive for the owner. owners are loosing out; subaru should recall this part and replace free of charge.

Car stalls at when coming to a hard stop (sometimes this happens in traffic which is really dangerous). after the stall, the car starts up fine. but then stalls when coming to a hard stop.

My 2011 subaru outback is experiencing shuddering & stalls when coming to a stop resulting in the engine shutting off. it occurs randomly, and nearly got in accidents with drivers behind me having to react to the sudden full stops. the vehicle is at a subaru dealership now for repairs to the torque converter as well as the valve box and value box wiring harness. there is a subaru technical bulletin #16-90-13r regarding a known problem with the torque converter: "2010-12 my legacy and outback models equipped with cvt transmission", subject "design change to lock-up type torque converter". given the danger of random stalling events, the number of reported incidents, and the ~$4400 repair expense being put on me for a known design problem, i would think this should be strongly considered for a recall.

Torque converter is malfunctioning. this is a known subaru defect, i believe. the car dies if i make a sudden stop- definitely a safety hazard. this happens on highways and surface streets.

Our 2011 outback would stutter at a stop, subaru said this was the way it was designed to conserve fuel. the vehicle now stalls, always starts back up but this is not comforting especially when my wife is driving by herself. this began sometime in january 2017 subaru tech said need to replace the entire transmission at a cost of $11,000. that's crazy. was referred by a friend to a transmission shop in baytown, says it is the torque converter and can either be rebuilt or replaced. i took it in yesterday and hopefully will pick it up friday. i have made several trips to the subaru dealer and called the headquarters. i am not pleased with my first subaru. should have stayed with a toyota which i have had great success with. our family of 4 had 4 camry's and got a combined total of over 1,200,000 miles on them.

Car stalls at hard stops and shudders on highway at speeds 45-55

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 subaru outback. while driving approximately 15 mph, the vehicle shuddered and stalled. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the technician could not identify the cause of the failure. the dealer diagnosed that the torque converter failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,500.

The torque converter locks up at low rpms and causes the car to stall. this is problematic at intersections and in traffic (which we experience a lot of in austin, texas). it is an ongoing problem that started recently.

2011 subaru outback worn torque converter thrust washer tech services bulletin #16-90-13r. engine shudders and stalls on quick stops like at stop light or at stop at top of an incline like exiting a parking garage. issue was diagnosed at my authorized subaru services dept yesterday that it was torque converter and i'd be responsible for repair cost. service tech and service dept manager confirmed that they did agree with my input when presenting the car. i was the one who diagnosed the problem -- which they confirmed. bulletin states the availability of a countermeasure torque converter assembly thrust washer changed from solid brushing type to needle bearing type. i have read extensive complaints from other owners experiencing this problem. this is a very serious issue that if not resolved can result in injury or death. i was almost in an accident because of this defect last week. subaru acknowledges the defect...but has done nothing about it. this needs to be a safety recall before someone gets killed!!! in some cases this defect has caused a fire in the engine. consumers have documented this serious defect on nhtsa, car talk, cars.com. subaru needs to recall these vehicles!!!!

Multiple transmission solenoids have failed and the transmission valve body needs to be replaced on this vehicle with a cvt transmission with 80,000 miles.

I have experienced a driver safety concern that can easily cause a collision to occur. when coming to a stop the automatic transmission does not go to neutral and the engine halts. i have to restart the car. this is dangerous as it may cause a rear end collision and has almost done so on numerous occasions. this is related to bulletin number 16-90-13r that has already been opened with subaru on 01/06/2014. the remedy is to replace torque converter thrust washer from a solid bushing-type to a needle bearing type. i strongly believe this should be a recall issue and not be passed onto to the customer. this can easily escalate to a class action law suit if a serious collision were to happen. here is the complaint presented to subaru bulletin number 16-90-13r; date: 01/06/14 revised: 05/07/14 applicability: 2010-12 my legacy and outback models equipped with cvt transmission subject: design change to lock-up type torque converter introduction this bulletin announces the availability of a countermeasure torque converter assembly to address a customer concern of very low engine rpm when coming to a stop. the condition is similar to coming to a stop in a manual transmission equipped vehicle without depressing the clutch pedal. thrust washer wear inside the torque converter can cause restriction of the oil passage used to bleed off lock-up clutch application pressure. the result is either a delayed (momentary low engine rpm) or no lock-up pressure release. the thrust washer has been changed from a solid bushing-type to a needle bearing type.

I had notified you about my subaru outback and the stalling problem we were having whenever we would come to a quick stop. subaru mechanic said that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $11,000. we had a local transmission shop look at it and they said it was the torque converter. they replaced the converter at a much cheaper cost and the vehicle so far has performed well. i have talked to other owners that are experiencing the stutter problem whenever they come to a stop but the vehicle has not stalled. i am confident that it will in time just as ours did. should subaru issue a recall on these converters?

When coming to a complete stop, vehicle will run rough and/or stall just before coming to a complete stop. this is well documented on subaru web forums. subaru needs to creat a recall. per subaru dealer diagnostic it is a bad torque converter, per bulletin # 16-90-13r.

My complaint is that the car stalls when you stop quick. it acts like you are stoping and not stepping on the clutch. but the transmission is a cvt. it started in december 2016. 102k miles. dealer is saying i need a new torque converter.

The car shudders and dies while in the process of coming to a hard stop. you have to put the car in neutral or park to start it again. this has happened multiple times, once in an intersection. very dangerous! there is a tsb (16-90-13r) out on this problem (failed thrust washer). this should be a recall! subaru wants over $1800 to replace the failed part. my car has 93,000 miles on it. seems to be happening on outbacks starting around 80,000 miles. ...updated 04/27/17 *bf

Car transmission shudders on deceleration; occasionally killing the engine altogether. feels like clutching mechanism within the automatic transmission is not functioning properly. dealer prescribed a new transmission. subsequently i researched multiple instances of similar situation/symptoms in same model year, but my vin was excluded from the nhtsa safety recall tsb no. 16-101-16. this situation is too coincidental; the recall needs to be expanded.

Torque converter judder. recommended torque converter replacement after the back up duty solenoid malfunction. car was towed to dealer after the at oil temp light as flashing while driving. dealer said to not drive it and have it towed. code p2764 was retrieved and solenoid was replaced. after test driving during the inspection, technician felt shuttering at 40mph and recommended replacing consistent with tsb 16-90-13r. *tr

Car is stalling when in motion, and coming to a stop without steady brake pressure. it shutters then stalls. it has happened at least 6 times since fall 2016. "nhtsa id number: 10080367- availability of countermeasure torque converter assembly" -doesn't solve problem for consumers. lack of recall/action on a 2011 model is alarming! does this malfunction need to harm/kill victims before action is taken?

The vehicle will stall out when the brakes are pressed abruptly and the speed suddenly decreases. this is extremely unsafe. especially for my pregnant wife to be driving. we bought a subaru because we thought they were built right and safe. we were wrong. *tr

Vehicle stalled when approaching a stop. this happened twice. this is an automatic and should not be happening. i had to put the car in to neutral/park and restart it at an intersection where there's a firehouse. i've been told the torque converter needs to be replaced and there is already a tsb on the bad design of this part and that it needs to be replaced. at this point, i believe it should be recalled as it's happening more often than not to this particular transmission. this is very dangerous.

Engine randomly stalls when coming to a complete stop. we are always concerned about the safety of our children when this happens in high traffic areas/times. our subaru service advisor has acknowledged that it is due to a poor design issue "tsb 16-90-13r" which requires the replacement of the torque converter.

Torque converter assembly. car is stalling when coming to a stop at a stop sign, or at stop light or even when going to a stop through a work zone. it shutters then stalls. feels like a manual transmission when a clutch is not fully pressed. it has happened 5 times since the end of november 2016
