We have classified the 50 complaints from 2006 Scion xB about VISIBILITY into the following categories.
The windshield on my 2006 scion xb cracked for no reason while parked (2 foot crack). the technician could find no cause. he said they replace these xb windshields daily. the car only has 5,000 miles on it. i have never replaced a windshield or had one crack in 30 years of owning cars. *tr
I wonder if the scion xb windshield is too thin. i've had my xb only about a year and a half and have had two broken windshields and each occurred on paved roads. prior to that i'd only had one broken windshield in 45 years of driving. *jb
Had vehicle for a year when my windshield cracked for the first time. a year later another crack appeared. i did research and it seems like this model in particular had windshield problems and continuously cracked easily. i believe this is a huge safety issue as it affects visibility tremendously and continues to be an ongoing occurrence. as most warranty have expired by now, a recall on these windshield should be in processed. *tr

Cracked windshield while parked. *tr
I bought my 2006 scion xb new. sitting in my driveway one morning i got in and closed the door. my windshield cracked. i had not started the car yet, just closed the door, and not hard. my car was parked on a slope, perhaps 6 degrees. the crack was on the lower driver's side corner about 5 inches from the bottom and only a few inches long. over the next few weeks it grew and turned down connecting with the bottom edge. now the same windshield has sprouted another crack. i just returned from the dealership, kearny mesa toyota (92111) where they told me there was nothing they could do, that the glass was impacted by rocks. the manager came out with his ballpoint pen and traced the crack. when he found no impact crater he made a chip by running his pen crosswise to the crack, which made a small star chip that looks like a impact mark. he told me this is not under warranty and that it would cost me 700 to 900 to fix my car. i am still driving with a broken windshield. *tr
Scion xb windshield damaged repeatedly. first crack from the top and down most of the driver side, l-shaped towards the driver-side frame. no apparent cause, except possibly extreme heat. replaced. since then, have had two new cracks starting from the top, down and multiple (at least 5 separately occurring) rock impacts. commute the same route as have in the previous seven years, with no similar damage/frequency to previous vehicle windshields. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota scion xb. the contact noticed that the windshield had a 10-inch crack. the vehicle has not been inspected by a mechanic. the current and failure mileages were 11,000.
I own a 2006 scion xb, the windshield has about 8 cracks in it, due to either unknown forces or the tiniest rocks hitting it. my car cannot pass inspections with the amount of damage to the windshield not only that but replacements for the xb's cost at least 500 dollars. by reading about many other cracked windshields from the scion xb's i know that it is not only me but many people with this same problem. there needs to be a recall on these windshields.** my address and phone number are for the nhtsa only, they are not to be sold or traded to anyone under the privacy protection act, to do so will result in serious consequences.** *tr
While the car was parked in the driveway during the day i came outside to find a 12 inch crack that started at the top near the rearview mirror and curved towards the 'side.there was no impact from any road elements.the crack wasn't there when we drove the car home that day.appeared while sitting outside. *ak
I have had to replace the windshield 5 times on my 2006 scion xb which was purchased in may 2006, i have also found out this is the most replaced glass windshield from our local safelite glass dealer, searching the internet i have found out i am not the only one with issue, this appears to be nationwide. although toyota/scion will never admit to a design flaw i am wondering what if anything is being dome to address this issue. although i have not been injured yet, i am sure it is only a matter of time when the windshield will fail completely. *jb
Scion xb sitting in atlanta airport parking lot. left for 12 days, windshield noted as cracked upon return. vehicle was not/had not moved when the windshield cracked. *ak
Windshield developed a crack approximately 4 inches in length while vehicle was not being driven. crack increased in length to approximately 1 1/2 feet in length the following day. vehicle had been driven but was parked when the crack increased in length. there was never any impact from rocks or any debris. the windshield was not touched in any way that could have caused damage. windshield was repaired by safelite glass, repair was covered by insurance claim. *jb
Tl* - the contact owns a 2006 toyota scion xb. the vehicle had stress cracks in the front windshield. while driving at 40 mph the normal debris on the road hit the window and caused it to crack. there were no injuries or collision. the contact stated that the stress cracks and the window failure was normal for this type of vehicle. the current and failure mileage were both 2,800. *ak
I own a 2006 scion xb and it continually has problems with the front windshield cracking. this appears to be due to a design flaw. *tr
Windshield cracked for no reason. i pulled up in the garage notice this 15 inches crack coming from lower passenger side window. no impact is visible to cause the crack. i called the dealership in lancaster they told me it was a rock that causes it, i advised to look in to a possible safety problem on the glass or design they said never heard of it before so i said to do a search in the internet. i don't mind replacing it but not every few weeks..like others did..someone need to look in to this possible safety problem with out being thrown out.. *nm
I purchased a new 2006 scion xb in july 2006. in february 2007, i turned on the defrost for the first time and the windshield cracked exactly in the middle about 5" straight up curved toward the driver for about 9" and then curved up again about 1 1/2". there were no other cracks in the windshield. i took it to the dealer who ran a pen digging into the crack saying there must have been some prior damage. there wasn't any prior damage to the windshield. *tr
Tl*- the contact owns a 2006 scion xb with an odometer reading of 16000 miles. the contact stated that the windshield would fail under the slightest pressure. the contact was driving under dry conditions at about 65 mph when a pebble hit the windshield and it caused a large crack considering the size of the pebble that hit the windshield. the contact called the manufacturer and they told him to file a complaint. the failure mileage was 12,000 miles.
Tl *- the contact owns a 2006 toyota scion. while driving at 60 mph the contact opened the windows and the rear driver side panel window began to crack and broke into pieces. the dealer advised the contact to call the warranty company. *ak
I purchased a brand new 2006 scion xb in december of 2006. i got a crack in my windshield approximately two weeks ago. there are no chips from being hit by a rock. there are message boards posting similar situations from other scion owners and neither scion nor toyota want to do anything to fix the problem. this is a manufacturing issue and not a cause of a rock chip. *jb
Tl *- the contact stated that while traveling at 25 mph and turning toward the sun, the sun isor did not extend far enough to prevent glare. the contact stated that because of this he was almost involved in a crash because he was unable to see. *ak
Tl*- the contact stated that the windshield cracked while sitting at a stop sign. the weather was sunny with temperature in low 30's. the contact stated that the crack started in the lower driver side of the windshield and continued to the passenger side of the vehicle. he contacted the manufacturer and filed a complaint, # 200701301072. *ak updated 02/22/07. *jb
The windshield of my 2006 scion xb has inexplicably cracked in a large l shape originating from the top of the windshield at the frame. the car was garaged when this happened, and had not been driven in one week. there was no recent impact from any rock, pebble or stone. *tr
While driving, a crack began in the windshield coming up from the about from the bottom of the windshield (about 8" from the middle, closer to the driver). after climbing a about 9" it made a 90 degree turn and continued on (making about an 18" crack w/in an hour). there was no chip near that area. there had been a chip on the far passenger side that had been repaired. since then the windshield has gotten 4 other rock chips (including on that caused a crack extending exactly opposite of the 1st crack -- coming from the top-passenger side of center, toward the driver). this car has only been on the interstate for about 2000 miles (it has a total of 20000 miles). it has not driven on any abnormal or industrial roads (all chips/cracks occurred while the vehicle was traveling on an urban interstate at separate times). i would also like an assessment of how many chips/cracks can occur before a catastrophic failure of the windshield. as i will not replace my windshield with every oil change (only when the state forces me to due to the frequent nature of these incidents). *tr
Windshield crack. *nm
I own a 2006 scion xb. there seems to be a manufacturer's flaw on the windshield design. less than 8 months there was a crack on the front windshield for no apparent reason. i then had to replaced it with a brand new front windshield. about a week later a new crack appeared, there was no rocks that had hit the front windshield. it just slowly started to crack from the driver's edge frame and slowing increased in length. to replace the windshield twice in 8 months was not regular. i searched online forums around, and it seemed like i was not the only one complaining about the toyota scion windshield defects. i think scion should be held responsible for all the cracked windshields that occrured with their defective design. there should be a recall to fix this problem. *ak
My windshield suddenly has a crack going all the way across my windshield nothing has hit my windshield, the crack has started from the edge of the windshield and i have talked with other 2006 scion owners that it has happened to. i need to be advised on what to do. *tr
Purchased car in september 2006 in north hollywood. sitting at gas station early morning near mt shasta (north california, temperature just above freezing) with heater running. while pumping gas heard a cracking noise, came around to front of car and found crack running horizontally from lower driver side of windshield. within two hours crack had grown almost seven inches, curving up first then running horizontally towards the passenger side. the next morning (again very cold temperatures) the crack had grown almost a full foot further. by the time i got the car to the dealership the "service manager" ran a pen along the crack and declared that a grain of sand had struck the windshield and that the dealership refused to cover the repair. i contacted toyota, they said that they would defer to the dealerships "experts," even though i pointed out the many, many postings on this fault on this website. there is definitely a recallable fault if a grain of sand traveling at freeway velocities can cause a failure of the windshield; were that explanation true no toyota could safely be on the road. the fact that i was at a dead stop when the "impact" happened makes it even more ridiculous. *jb
The windshield cracked for no reason a stone or rock did not hit the car . it was not involved in a accident. crack started in left corner of windshield traveled up and across windshield about 16 inches dealer says they no nothing about a problem i go on line to motorbeat.com and find over 100 posts. *tr
I have a new 2006 scion xb purchased in september 2006. first cracked windshield occurred on 11/09/06; at 7am , temperature 65-68 degrees, i turned on the heat-low- to get fog off the windshield, took out the thrash and came back to the car and found a nine inch crack from left side under rubber bending toward the right into my line of sight. no objects have hit my windshield and dealer could find no impact point. toyota replaced windshield under warranty. today, 12/20/06, i turned on the heat-specifically kept it low-to clear fog again (70 degrees outside). drove 0.2 mile and noticed a new crack coming from under the rubber at the top center near the rear view mirror. nothing has hit this second windshield. found many internet blogs about scion xb windshields cracking while they just sit in peoples' garage. this appears to be a design flaw. i request a recall on this flimsy windshield. please tell me what can be done about this. i am sure another windshield will not fix the real problem--this is a safety hazard and getting the repair causes me to lose work time. *nm
Tl*- the contact owns a 2006 scion xb with a current odometer reading of 7,000 miles. the contact stated that while the vehicle was parked the contact came out and found that the windshield was cracked from the bottom where the windshield wipers rest on the passenger's side about 12 inches to the top drivers side. the contact stated that nothing hit the windshield to cause this problem. the failure mileage was 6,000.*ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota scion xb. he stated that the windshield was replaced three times due to cracks and stress. the contact felt that there a designed flaw which caused the failure. the manufacturer stated that they are aware of the design flaw and advised the contact that he was responsible for the repair. the current mileage is 30,200 and the failure mileage was 1500. updated 02/01/08. *lj
2006 scion xb windshield stress cracking. there was no impact. i have had two replaced in 4 months. the dealer has taken care of this so far, but i wanted to advise in that it appears to be a common issue. in some parts of the country, the dealers are not taking care of this problem. its either bad glass, or the cradle the glass sits in, is not matched to the glass profile. both cracks appeared while sitting. there was no impact. *nm
I own a 2006 scion xb and i believe there is something wrong with the structure of the vehicle. i had to replace the windshield of the car after a 6 inch crack appeared in it instantly and then developed into a 12 inch crack by the next morning. i took it to the dealership because there was no sign of trauma that would cause a crack and the guy took a pen and ran it up the crack and said there was a chip that caused this crack. the "chip" in no way should have caused this damage seeing as the car was in the dealership on friday and they did not detect any flaws in the glass and for this "chip" to have happened within the next two days and lead to a crack is unheard of as i have experienced chips in other windshields and they lead to no such damage in such a short time. *nm
Went to my garage in the morning and discovered an "l"shaped crack in the center of the windshield had formed overnight. i was completely shocked as nothing had previous hit the windshield. after searching the web, it's clear the must be a defect in the design as it can not be a coincidence that many other 2006 xb owners have similar cracks in their windshields. the toyota/scion service manager said he would call me when the dsm inspection is possible. i am going to go the other dealerships to see if i can schedule the inspection sooner. *tr
One month after purchasing my scion xb, a pebble hit my windshield as often happens on the freeway. this made a small "spidery" ding in the windshield. a week later, that ding grew to be over 24" long. everywhere i go, i see scion xb's and probably 85% of them also have a huge crack in the windshield. something should be done about this. *tr
1. events leading up to the failure: vehicle sit in the sunlight. 2. failure and its consequences: the windshield cracks because the frame flexes without any impact to the windshield. 3. what was done to correct the failure: i had 8 windshield replacements in 6 months. toyota/scion eventually repurchased the vehicle since it was a lemon. *tr
The windshield broke on september 12, 2006 due to stress fracture according to toyota. toyota replaced windshield at no cost to me. on september 17, 2006 the windshield broke again and was replaced by toyota at no cost to me. again breakage was due to a stress fracture according to toyota. *jb
Death rattle noise at upper left, above dash near front windshield. this noise has been there on and off since the purchase of the car. this noise indicates that a crack will appear in windshield shortly. the crack is longer than a foot and will appear suddenly. victorville toyota dealer doesn't believe there is a problem. the crack appeared after i had the noise checked out by victorville toyota after they couldn't find the problem. i believe it is the windshield support brackets that need to be trimmed that will cause the crack. *nm
2006 toyota scion xb cracked windshield....no apparent reason. *tr
Windshield cracks: my windshield cracked, with no one in the car, and no chip. it had less than 2000 miles when it happened. i had parked the car most of the way under a carport, where the front 2/3 was shaded as the sun rose that morning but the back 1/3 had sun shining on it. i had the front windows down a couple of inches each. the crack came from the passenger side at the seal about half way up the window, and traveled in toward the driver's side horizontally then took a turn 90 degrees upward for a couple of inches and then 90 degrees toward the driver's side again. total length was approx 14 inches. i immediately called the dealer and asked if anyone else had this same issue. mind you i bought the car from kerry scion in florence, ky. where they claim the car sells itself and they can't keep them in stock- no one seemed to have reported a similar incident. the service tech laughed at me over the phone! i took a ballpoint pen like he told me and followed the crack and no chip! this was in august 2006. over the course of one year the crack grew to almost the entire width of the windshield. then just last week, a new crack appeared originating at the top edge of the windshield, on the drivers side of the review mirror, traveling downward then making a 90 degree turn toward the passenger side. the same day the second crack appeared, which occurred as the car was parked(same as the first crack) in the lot at work, the original crack grew approx 6 inches toward the drivers side. this is why i replaced the windshield today: i was told while registering my vehicle this past week that the state i now live in, ks, will ticket you for a crack in the windshield if in front of the drivers line of sight. so if it is safety concern for the state of kansas, then it's a safety issue that toyota need to address. *tr
The windshield on my 2006 scion xb has been replaced twice and currently has a crack in it. the first crack appeared 6 weeks after purchasing the car and the dealer replaced it free. the second time it cracked i wasn't aware that there were problems with other scion windshields and replaced it myself 2 weeks later for $226.63. now i have another crack in the windshield but haven't fixed it because i know it will crack again. *tr
The windshield on my 2006 scion xb cracked (full length of the windshield) while the vehicle was stationary. the vehicle was parked in my driveway. there was no evidence of impact. curious why it would crack while the vehicle was parked i searched the internet and discovered that numerous others scion xb owners were reporting an identical situation. *tr
Due to the upright position of the windshield a small rock can cause stars which lead to multiple leader cracks. due to grill design and position of a/c condenser a small rock can puncture causing a leak and require replacement costs of up to $1100 on a 4 month old car. toyota needs to realize that their design has major flaws with positioning. unfortunately, rocks are everywhere and if you drive any at all on the freeway you are surely going to encounter some. *jb
Cracked windshield on my 2006 scion xb. with only 3,200 miles on the car i started noticing small stress cracks starting on the side of he windshield. after i went to scion they attributed these cracks from rock chips. the company that replaced the windshield said that their where no rock divoys in the crack line and that these was an stress issue. *tr
