The RAM 2500's throttle valve is a key player in providing air to the engine's combustion chambers, hence playing a pivotal role in the formation of the accurate fuel-air mixture. As you put the pedal to the metal, the throttle broadens its doors, inviting more fuel into the cylinders. The operation of the throttle valve hinges on the quantity of the air-fuel concoction.
Throughout its working life, the throttle accrues a layer of dirt and dust carried by the incoming air.

This unwelcome debris gradually settles on the body, meddling with the usual functioning of this component. When the throttle becomes significantly obstructed, your RAM 2500 starts showing the corresponding indications. Here are the symptoms of a throttle body overdue for a clean:
If these symptoms ring a bell and your throttle valve hasn't seen a cloth for a while, it's high time to tackle it.
The kit you need for the cleaning operation is pretty straightforward and probably already in your garage.
It includes:
I'd suggest giving your throttle valve a good clean roughly every 75,000 miles (121,000 km). Although there's no hard and fast rule, regular sprucing up of the throttle valve positively influences your RAM 2500's performance. Notice any odd behaviour? It could be cleaning o'clock.
There are two methods to give the throttle valve a good clean - with or without detaching the component from your RAM 2500. This article presents the latter method, one that doesn't involve part removal.
Although it's equally effective as the former method, it's simpler as it saves a big chunk of the work. Nevertheless, if your throttle valve is grimy or not up to par, a comprehensive clean with the parts removed might be the better route.

First off, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. This step is key to de-energize your RAM 2500 and ward off any potential electric shocks.
Next, disconnect the air supply hose extending from the air filter to the throttle. More often than not, it's secured with a clamp - although, it could also be attached by some other method. Disconnect it before removal.
You'll find a number of wires and pipes tethered to the throttle valve - with some functioning as sensors, while coolant travels through the tubes. During the disconnection process, ensure the pipes are held vertically and plugged with a spark plug to prevent any liquid spills.

After your RAM 2500's throttle has had a good wash, you'll need to put all the parts back where they belong. With a myriad of wires, confusion can creep in. Hence, sign and label everything you disconnect, making it easier to know what goes where, and facilitating the reassembly process post-cleaning.
Apply a healthy dose of cleaner on the throttle body. Let it sit for a bit to work its magic. In case of stubborn grime, a 3-5 minute wait should suffice for the cleaner to break it down.
Proceed to clean the throttle using a brush (not too harsh to avoid scratching the blade), cloth, or cotton swab.
If the dirt doesn't budge the first time, don't be shy to reapply the cleaner and repeat the process until you've got a sparkling throttle valve without any leaks or any remaining signs of contamination.
Once you're done cleaning, it's time to reassemble everything. Make sure everything's in working order, with no strange noises or symptoms cropping up.
On newer RAM 2500 vehicles with electronically actuated throttles (controlled by an electronic pulse, not a cable), there's a dedicated throttle position sensor that monitors the throttle blade's current position. Before you start the engine, this blade sits nicely straight at a 90-degree angle.
It fits snuggly against the upper and lower walls, not allowing excess air to sneak through. But as time marches on, grime settles on the walls of the air channel or the blade. Owing to this accumulation, the throttle can't fully close and remains in a fixed position.
This position is read by the sensor, and your RAM 2500's computer now treats this as the new baseline.
Meaning, the neutral position of the throttle blade is its reference point (the factory default), taking into account the thickness of the dirt layer that has settled on it. This is completely typical, as it's factory-programmed, and is essential to keep the engine ticking over in working condition.
However, after you've given the throttle body a good clean and restored the surface to its original state, the RAM 2500's computer might not “get” this.
It doesn't have any indicators to inform it that there's nothing obstructing the throttle blade from fully closing - the vehicle's computer will still believe that dirt is present and, accordingly, keep the blade in the position it remembers.
Consequently, there will be a gap between the throttle walls and the blade, letting at least a few millimetres of air to pass through.
In essence, the RAM 2500's computer will be under the impression that the throttle pedal is constantly engaged, even when it's not, and more air will rush into the cylinders through the newly formed gap.
This doesn't sit well with the engine; it's under constant load, which becomes particularly noticeable at idle when, instead of ticking over at 800 rpm, it revs up to 1500–2000 rpm. This can lead to overheating and a decrease in the engine's overall lifespan.
Therefore, post-cleaning, it's crucial to recalibrate the blade to the factory position.
The throttle valve adaptation process is universal for many RAM 2500 models.
Get the engine up to its operating temperature, then turn it off and wait for 5-10 seconds. Turn on the ignition and wait another 3 seconds. After this, you need to press the throttle pedal 5 times in 5 seconds and then release it.
If this doesn't make a difference, it implies that your RAM 2500's system is programmed in a different way. The throttle valve adaptation process should be detailed in your RAM 2500's owners manual.
Keeping your RAM 2500's throttle body clean is essential as it wards off dirt from settling on the blade or causing gaps between the blade and the body itself.
While carrying out this cleaning task, a bit of patience and a careful approach are your best friends to yield the outcome you're after.
